A few years too late, and you may not even remember, but I want to say it: You were right. The Elena of Avalor fanbase DID have issues it refused to acknowledge. They instead swept them under the rug under the guise of being "drama free." The main ones being (for me) poor fandom dynamics where only a handful of creators ever got proper feedback (and when anyone brought this up they were seen as "attention seeking"), and an intense pressure to fit in based on those popular people's opinions. Maybe no one was outright mean or hateful, but the vibe of "well that's YOUR opinion" just was not it. Because it was done in such a dismissive way where those on the "outside" (rarepair shippers, new writers, people with different headcanons than the popular, etc.) felt ignored and their content unwanted. Also, the canon "all-but-confirmed" confirmation of Gabe and Naomi as a thing just RUINED the fandom. Change my mind.
(For the record, I will not mention and do not want to speak about certain other aspects of shipping due to my personal stance that disagrees with yours. I'd rather let that lie.).
That's it. That is all I wanted to say. You were right and many of us needed a few years removed from it to see it.
Thank you so much for this message! It means a lot. I do remember it well. And probably will for a long time.
I’ve always been a fan of more obscure things, and so as a result,  I’ve always been a member of smaller fandoms. The atmosphere in Elena’s fandom was so contrary to every other similar sized fandom I had ever been in. And it was sad.
In other places, due to just how few of us there were, basically anything and everything was appreciated. Even the weird stuff. Because dang it, it was content. There were multiple interpretations of the lore. Multiple ships. And while there were ‘leaders’, they weren’t decidedly totalitarian in their treatment of others. The best leaders were the ones who encouraged new ideas, stopped misinformation and generally just were cool people.
I of course came to the Elena fandom a little late but in part for research, in part morbid curiosity I read a lot of old posts throughout the fandoms lifespan. I saw a lot of concerning things. I saw how anyone who criticized Elena as a character in any way got shut out. You could literally see fandom drop-off points where something big would happen in the show, and people who didn’t like whatever it was (re: Dreamcatcher) would try to talk about it before being shut down, especially for defending Esteban. The Dreamcatcher lockdown I’m pretty sure shrank the fandom in half.
Dude the all but confirmed ships thing fills me with a rage too!
I hatttteeeeee Mateo x Carla so much it's literally my main notp from the show and the finale did it to them too.
Granted, Eleteo was so popular with the big wigs that obviously that one got the slide.
But any other options for Gabe and Naomi were out.
Estenaomi? Elenaomi? Gabeisa? Gabela? Any other combos I’m not thinking of?
Nope!
(Totally ok! I have a guess as to which it is and while I don’t ship it, it’s chill!)
I personally was a quiet shipper of Marzel and Elena; he struck me as the in-between of Mateo and Gabe that gave her the best of both worlds.
I have ranted a lot about the toxicity of the fandom to close friends. What got me the most was the gaslighting of people and the regular blatant lying or dismissive behavior.
There was one gif that was made that was meant to show that ‘blaze isn’t a kill spell’ in a ‘so random coincidence not related to me’. It was from when Shurikki got her wand back and what happened in the show was that blaze hit her wand not Shurikki.
But the gif was misleading. It took out a frame from the show in order to make it look like blaze hit Shuriki instead of her wand. It made me so fucking angry.
But I refused to call them on it. Because I even doubted it myself. Because that’s what kind of control these so called ‘leaders’ had on the Elena narrative and discourse.
So instead I just put the actual clip in my second video.
My favorite thing was how they never directly spoke to me but instead tried to pretend I didn’t exist while ‘so randomly’ addressing the stuff I bring up in either of my videos.
It was sad.
They were a lot of sad sad women who were definitely lonely.
I lost all sympathy though when they started bullying the younger generation of fans who started appearing and had different takes on the show.
Like the laughability of it all, these millennial women getting angry at the actual intended audience for having a different opinion then them.
I could keep going, but basically,
Hang in there cowboy. There’s always more fandoms and now you know the warning signs.
Thanks for the message!

I still can't believe how the fanbase REMADE c!wilburs personality. the dude was pretty much solid, even in the weeks before his death, and the fanbase was like, "nah, that's a manipulative, gaslighting (Please learn to use that word correctly I swear to God), cruel, evil spawn of Satan who physically abuses tommy and hates tubbo because he keeps him from isolating tommy" meanwhile wilbur is canonically hitting a blunt and having his third crisis of the week because he doesn't want to admit he needs help but also he misses his dad but also vulnerability gets you hurt in this world and therefore everyone, not just wilbur, is hiding themselves, and if everyone is hiding themselves, you really can't trust any of what they say, and that thought process repeating over and over into the hazy infinity of unwilling unconsciousness as he passes out from lack of sleep and malnutrition. the depressed disaster who constantly looks like a homeless fashion model is really the dude who you all are calling evil incarnate. huh.
(and then when dream acts exactly like what fanon interprets wilbur to be, suddenly we're debating if that's even a bad thing, maybe his actions are really not that evil and that maybe he's justified for abusing a child, the hypocrisy is blatant but I still don't understand the blatant mischaracterization of wilbur specifically as an antagonistic figure. especially when dream has always been Right There)

1/3 "I’ve yet to encounter a Scott fan who would say that only Stiles and others make mistakes and Scott is flawless. Also there's the fact that I’ve yet to see some pro-Scott fan call anyone on the imaginary other side names" That's a blatant lie, and you know it. The Scott fans you reblogged this post from for example are well known racist, ableist bullies who routinely stalk and harass Stiles, Derek, Sterek, Steter and Thiam fans and anyone who doesn't worship the ground Scott walks on
2/3 or writes non Scott centric fics, and spend all their time targeting newbies and vilifying, demonizing and obsessively hating on Stiles and Derek in an attempt to prop Scott up. They also luv to accuse anyone who dislikes Scott, or prefers other characters to Scott, or dares to point out/criticize Scott's canon abusive actions and behavior of "racism" in order to gaslight them into silence. Users princeescaluswords and liliaeth have been doing it for years now: harassing non Scott fans
3/3 Users princeescaluswords and liliaeth have been doing it for years now: harassing non Scott fans in their own tags and fandom space and hating on Stiles and Derek just because they are everyone's favorite (including the whole cast's) and eclipsed Scott from day one without even trying. There are plenty of receipts of their toxic behaviour on internet, so it's kinda hard to believe you you never noticed... It's more likely you condone them because they harass people over your personal fav
//////
Before I start: once again, my opinion is my opinion, I don't want to offend anyone, I don't want to be rude to anyone. I'm merely explaining my point of view.
Anyway. Before I truly start, let's tag the people mentioned. Can I tag them? Scratch that, it's my response, I don't have to ask anyone and people should know when someone's talking about them.
@liliaeth @princeescaluswords (I'm sorry if I'm bothering you with this, but as I stated, I'd like to know if somebody was talking about me.)
And now, we can start responding to the ask!
First. Are... are we talking about the same people? Are we? Because I've spent quite a lot of time browsing throught their blogs, reading their (quite long and explanatory) posts about the Teen Wolf fandom.
Now, I have absolutely no idea where did you came to the conclusion that these people are racists, especially when they're literally defending the characters of color in the show? (And yeah, I know that racism is described as “prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized” but come on. People liking white, problematic dudes is a thing and no one can deny that.)
That they're ableist? Please, explain how? Because I've never seen them use Stiles' ADHD as an argument.
Hey! Just as I'm writing this, the anon (at least I assume it's still the same one) sent me a submision:
Talk about harassment https://liliaeth.tumblr.com/post/663090045411082240/its-funny-how-some-people-are-so-utterly-wrong
Tell your gross Scott McCall defense squad friend @liliaeth to stop targeting newbies and harassing an autistic person just because they don't worship the ground her shitty fav Scott walks on please? Thank you
Aaand my response is: Yeah, I admit that making a point could go without some words. But, I'm also going to refer to this post, where @liliaeth explains what they personally have against Stiles.
Anyway, let's continue.
Let's talk about the harassing and stalking. I don't know how their Tumblr works. Personally, Tumblr suggest for me the 'possible interesting posts' when there are tags I use, obviously. That means that I'm seeing a lot of both negative and positive opinions in the Teen Wolf/Stiles Stilinski/Scott McCall etc. tags.
Now, the internet isn't private. What you post, that's here for all people to see. It's kind of expected that people will react. But I wouldn't say that they're “stalking” because for me, it stalking doesn't look like that.
The same goes for the harassing, but as I said earlirer, I admit that they could leave out some words. Though, as I see it, it's still not as bad as what they've sometimes recieved.
(Also I personally don't really like Theo, but that's a conversation for another time. That also doesn't mean that I'm about to hate on people who like him.)
But let me just ask: If they're both so against the characters/ships, then why are they reblogging content with it? Just as I'm writing this, @liliaeth reblogged this, for example. Three days ago @princeescaluswords reblogged this.
How I see it is, that both @liliaeth and @princeescaluswords are explaining their points of view in their posts. And yeah, maybe sometimes they say something a little harsh, but them being abusive? Ableist? Racist?
I don't see it. Yes, they're explaining why they like Scott and why they think anti-Scott fans are wrong, but they're also not forgetting Scott's flaws and mistakes. Or gaslighting fans whose fav isn't Scott into silence, as you put it.
So, yeah. Call me biased, call me crazy, I don't really care. I'm just saying how I see it, and how I interpreted posts and words of these people.
My conclusion?
My point from the reblogged post you've reacted to still stands. Though, I admit, I'm changing the statement in the bracket: I think that yes, some Scott fans have been harsh to the people on the other side, but not straight up mean. (But note that this is also quite individual: for some people being rude/mean can (and does) mean something different than for other people.)
Also, @liliaeth and @princeescaluswords please don't consider this as a hate on you from me. It's NOT meant like that. I agree with many of your opinions/points. I really don't want you to think that this was written to bring you down or anything.
(Also I hope I haven't misgendered any of you. I tried to stick with 'they' but if you're not comfortable with that, please send me a message and I'll rewrite it!)
(Here goes my assurance and expressing my feeling issues.)

I am not even close to being a James Charles fan. I've watched two videos from him, one being his video response to the allegations almost two years ago. The second one with his mom watching him do a video where he got drunk for his 21st birthday. Aside from among us streams he's been involved in from gamers I follow, i have had zero interactions with his content. He is too young, too annoying, and too looks obsessed for me to relate to or enjoy his content. I don't hate James Charles, but I'm nowhere near close to being a fan.
And yet the fact that in 2021, I am witnessing homophobic lies, half truths, and gaslighting being thrown at him AGAIN has me so livid I want to fight. Literally, physically fight. Seeing people pretend this is some pattern of behavior as if James didn't drop a video disproving the previous allegations as a bunch of clout chasing straight boys who wanted the benefit from being James Charles' boo without doing boo things (because that would be TOO gay for them). Seeing people act like James flirting with a 16 yo after the kid lied and said he was 18, and then stopped talking to the kid when he found out the truth, is grooming (you guys have no idea what grooming is huh?). Seeing people pretend that James flirting with people sliding into HIS dms is him "abusing" his "power" as an influencer to solicit sexual favors from fans (guess celebs aren't ever allowed to talk to fans ever oh well) sounds awful close to that homophobic dance yall were doing a while back. The "James is using his influence to try to turn straight boys gay!" dance.
I'm not a fan of the kid, but I will defend a fellow gay person, especially a gay youth struggling to navigate dating in our modern, social media obsessed world, from blatant homophobia. Acting like the kid isn't allowed to want to get freaky and flirt. Acting like it's a crime when he can tell the guy isn't interested and backs off! Gay men are allowed to want sex and to flirt and date and look for sexual partners! They are not predators or groomers for dating men in their age range (the recent kid on tik tok is only two years younger than James, and is crying and triggered about James "questioning his confidence" because he didn't realize James was flirting with him), or dropping them if their interests aren't aligned.
The reality is that James so clearly wants to get laid, and needs to stop entertaining obviously straight boys on popular social media sites. Those boys are liars, looking to trap James in situations that they can use to be messy and get clout online. He needs to put his big boy panties on, get a grindr account like every other gay man looking to get laid, and only date guys 23 and older. He can find plenty of masc guys his type there, and he won't have to worry about them trying to expose him as some predator later. Imagine if some dude tried to say James was trying to make him gay when they met on grindr. No one will ever take him seriously.
To protect himself, James needs to leave the young "confused" (read: straight) boys alone and get with some men who aren't afraid to fuck.

Michael in the Mainstream: Midsommar
Tumblr media
Hereditary is a really great horror film, one of the best of the past decade even, but it does have a major problem: a finale that is just laughably bad and almost derails the movie, culminating in a blatant ripoff of Rosemary’s Baby. Honestly though, it’s easy to forgive this minor fumble, because this was director Ari Aster’s first big film, and the rest of it is so good that I’m willing to give it a pass. What I’m not willing to give a pass is a follow-up that not only rips off quite a few much better horror films, but has less going for it to make it a little more acceptable.
Midsommar is a film that had a lot going for it. Aster really did get hopes high with Hereditary, and to this film’s credit, it starts out with a Hereditary-worthy gut punch, with an incredibly unnerving murder-suicide that kickstarts the plot and puts our protagonist Dani into a broken, vulnerable state of mind. It’s such a brutal, shocking opening, and in my opinion one of the most striking moments in the film. And there are plenty more! The scene where the cultists leap to their deaths from a cliff, the disturbing hallucinatory dream sequences, the ritualistic orgy, the reveal of the “blood eagle”… there is a lot of uncomfortable imagery to rival the decapitated head in Hereditary, and it is accompanied by some of the best cinematography and music you’re likely to see in modern horror.
But that’s the thing. This movie is just a bunch of really good, striking moments connected by some of the worst horror characters ever wandering around a super cliché cult village with no real substance to really keep you invested. I really did not like any of the characters at all. Christian especially stands out as being unrelentingly awful with how he gaslights Dani and basically treats her like garbage for the entire film, to the point that he eventually cheats on her in the most over-the-top fashion possible. The other characters are just really bland and forgettable; I forgot their names as soon as the film was over. And the villagers themselves don’t do anything to really stand out, save for resident seductress Maja. There’s not really a Lord Summerisle character leading the cult who is charismatic and played by a cool actor; all these cultists are just bland and interchangeable.
The plot and story too are really bland and derivative. You can easily predict the course of the entire movie as soon as things get going; there aren’t really any major twists or turns, aside from some of the shocking, gory visuals that show up infrequently. This film also liberally lifts from other horror films, with The Wicker Man and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre standing out as obvious films that this lifts elements from. This would be a lot more forgivable, as it was with Hereditary, if this was confined to maybe the ending, but it’s pretty much the entire runtime once they get to the village, and there’s just not anything new or interesting done with it. At least in Hereditary when they had all the naked demon-worshippers they chanted the name of a different demon other than Satan; here, they legit have a dude wearing another dude’s face as a mask grunting and groaning while he smashes another dude over the head with a hammer. Perhaps “rip off”is too strong of a word, but when there’s just nothing really interesting being done with these shout outs and homages, it’s hard not to feel like it’s just cheap insertions of stuff from movies I’d rather be watching - and I don’t even particularly like the original version of The Wicker Man.
I’m really hoping Ari Aster does something great next that isn’t lame or derivative, something closer to what he did with Hereditary, because I do think he has a genuine talent, and this film isn’t awful by any means; it’s more bland, average, and ultimately nothing to write home about than anything. I’m just a bit worried that Aster might go the way of Shymalan or, God forbid, Josh Trank, peaking with their first films and then steadily going downhill. Still, again, I want to make it totally clear this movie isn’t worthless or awful, and if you like good cinematography and unsettling atmosphere, maybe this will do more for you than it did for me.
I do think there’s enough value here to keep this from being in the same class as Slender Man or Smiley or The Tall Man, but this film is just missing that brilliance that made Hereditary so good. If you’re looking for anything that manages to combine interesting characters alongside atmosphere and cinematography and soundtrack the way Hereditary did, just skip this one and watch Hereditary again. It’s just a better experience overall, and hopefully what Aster can emulate with whatever he comes up with next.

One more note on plagiarism
This is an answer to a Karedevil Squad ask. I figured since these are very much my opinions, I should answer it here so that people could come at me directly if they want, especially since I’m calling a specific person out.
I’m sorry if this is long-winded or redundant in places. Blame it on the rage.
I’ve had a few people ask me about my anti-plagiarism comments. They stem from this message, which several people received in their inbox a little over a year ago.
Dmcreif had been a slight annoyance pre-plagiarism explosion. He sent many of us dozens of asks, (frequently the same asks) and was clearly obsessive. He liked to mansplain things like “fridging,” “toxicity,” and why Matt Murdock was somehow not deserving of the fallout from the mistakes he made. That I could deal with because I enjoyed reading people’s differing ideas about the analysis I was writing. Dmcreif does not. He loves to argue. He loves to hear his points validated. And he loves to harass people.
Many of us didn’t see what he was doing until the anon message. I still feel like people are pissed about us validating him by answering his questions/talking to him, but if you weren’t following a ship, or you just missed it, you didn’t always notice this shit. I follow hundreds of people and didn’t see his harassment until a couple of weeks before it blew up.
You’d see a post where he made some asinine Kastle or MattxElektra comment and tag it. You’d see veiled comments about how a “certain Karedevil user” is back at it again. I messaged several people asking about what it meant and they were always classy, just referencing someone who upset their ship. I jumped into an argument he’d started about Elektra’s toxicity saying Matt Murdock was a grown ass man and defending Elektra and I got the nicest message saying the OP appreciated my saying it. They were dealing with this shit on and off Tumblr and I didn’t know it. Not until the anon bomb went off and I started combing through his tumblr and reddit posts.
I realized that I wasn’t the only one he was doing this to and it was much worse than I thought it was. I never received the message, but I found 1200+ word posts I’d written directly copied and pasted under dmreif on reddit, as well as other words I’d written reposted in the comments of other posts. I saw specific users directly pointing out that he stole entire posts without crediting people. Numerous times. My blog name was mentioned in one of these comments on a site I had never used. He knew what he was doing and he kept doing it. It was infuriating. I was shocked.
Here are some examples posts that he stole from:
Mine    “His” Trombonesinspace’s    “His”
Those are the easiest examples and are just a drop in the bucket (dude posts a lot, so don’t waste too much time.)
After being confronted (and this wasn’t the first time, apparently,) he wrote this “apology” which had been forced out of him when he came to a justifiably pissed individual with his tail between his legs.
Tumblr media
There are some wonderful users who noticed these things pre-“apology” and post-“apology”, but he ignored them (once he apparently added quotes, but that doesn’t make it better in my opinion.) People also reported him for copyright violation, but reddit only allows you do that after so long, so in my case, I was out of luck. Check this reddit user’s comment history for some enlightenment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this blow up, people stopped talking to him. And responding to his asks. And many blocked him. It didn’t matter. He created a new blog (georgiakaredevilfan) and started sending asks from that. And if people didn’t respond, he’d send anons. His questions are pretty obvious and many of us have recognized when it was him.
Since you are the person who sent this message, @evs14u , I will give you an example. Here are three of your anon asks with a link to a VERY similar question he asked on reddit.
Your “anon” ask    His post
Your “anon” ask    His post
Your “anon” ask    His post
Here is one specific thought he took from you and re-worded - you can find it in the coments of the first “’his’ post” link above. Yours:
Tumblr media
“his”
Tumblr media
Maybe it seems small, but that only took me twenty minutes to find. He posts to reddit like crazy and I don’t have your words memorized. So it’s more difficult than say, finding 1000+ word posts I wrote and he stole in their entirety.
It’s gotten easy to figure out when a new blog is his. Obsessed with Karen Page? Check. Obsessed with the core three getting back together and Karen having to be their secretary (thanks to DDS3, he’s upgraded that role slightly)? Check. Obsessed with hating Olicity. Elektra being “toxic.” Matt Murdock’s mistakes being somewhat his fault, but mostly the fault of the people he wronged over and over again? Getting the group together sooner? Everything coming around to Karedevil? Check, check, check. And finally: false-ignorance when it comes to harassing people who aren’t in his ship and at the same time blatant harassment and baiting to get reactions while still thinking he’s a good guy. Check.
He makes comments about wanting the ships to get along and how certain “bad apples” spoil the bunch. He is the bad apple. He is the one who stirs up shit when he disagrees. He is obsessive. He makes people hate Karedevil shippers (and we’re a lovely bunch), and he made people want to leave this site altogether (me included.)
He needs your validation. He needs your thoughts so that he can repost them - as @significantowl pointed out, it seems like he’s harvesting opinions that he can use. He’ll send you asks where he tells you something instead of actually asking something. Sometimes there will be a question attached to a tangent (which he likely stole), but most of the time it’s just a statement. He wants you to tell him he’s right. There isn’t much of a way to escape him. He is obsessed. It doesn’t matter when you join this fandom, if you have views that are similar, or if you have the complete opposite, he will bother you.
So yeah, this isn’t just about plagiarism, it’s also about harassment. I care more about the latter, to be honest, so I’ve paid attention. I’ve stopped writing meta because of him, but I’m not going to ignore the blatant crap he’s continuing to pull. He is a gaslighting sonofabitch and he makes us all think we’re paranoid. We aren’t.
