Only the frequent mentions of financial exchange gave him pause. There seemed to be an intense focus on it, which Strahm found weird. Surely people would be more likely to call if they weren’t reminded of how much they were spending, right? Like the way casinos have no windows or clocks to trick you into staying longer, not realizing how much you’re dumping away. Subtle mental manipulation that leaves you shocked when you check your bank account the next day.

That’s how it’s supposed to work… right?

But Strahm started to read words and terms he didn’t recognize. Paypig. Human ATM. Findom. He googled them, and what he found made him scoff in disbelief.

An entire fetish for giving money to people for nothing, huh? How stupid. His finger hovered over the back button.

But then he saw something that gave him pause. Right in front of his eyes, the man’s line clicked from “available” to “busy.” Someone was actually calling him at the obscene price of $4.99 per minute.

He waited. He waited. And he waited, just staring at that button. Refreshing the page a few times to see if it was a glitch. Then, finally, after fifteen minutes — $75, more or less — it went off.

And the price increased to $6.99.

The line went busy again.

He sat there, watching it happen over and over. Busy to available. Price raised by a few dollars. More blocks of time busy, this guy chatting with his customer about god only knows what.

It capped out at $50 a minute, with the poor sap staying on the line for half an hour.

Holy shit.

Then it seemed to be over. The line remained available, and the price dropped back to $4.99.

Strahm typed his card number into the site and picked up his phone.
