"I must play the role that they want me to play": Trans coding and Furina de Fontaine
There are several facts that, when combined, make the character of Focalors/Furina is distinctly transgender in nature. Firstly, Focalors/Furina was born an Oceanid, a species of pure water spirits that is genderless and sexless.
Tumblr media
In legends shared by humans regarding their origins, the first Oceanid is called “it/its.” The human author recounting this story says humans have used “she” to Oceanids ever since, more as a matter of course than an expression of gender.
Tumblr media
Oceanids are also sexless, as they do not reproduce through any sort of coupling and instead proliferate through abstract means that are little understood by humans. Focalors/Furina, after seeing the lives humans led on land, eventually longed to be human herself. The desire to transform from Oceanid to human is already a solid metaphor for transness in and of itself, but is even more so given that Focalors/Furina as an Oceanid starts as a creature that is genderless and sexless.
The trans coding of Focalors/Furina’s dream to be human only becomes more profound once they become a god and are forced to split themself into two i halves in a bid to save Fontaine. The divine half has to give up her humanity forever, yet continues to long for the humanity she once had down to her very last breath.
Tumblr media
The human half, Furina, meanwhile has to hide her humanity and true self for centuries. Forced back in the metaphorical closet in a way that is acutely familiar to any queer person who’s been closeted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going beyond the lore that Focalors/Furina was born genderless and sexless and the storyline which serves as a broader metaphor for transness, Furina’s design is distinctly androgynous, so much so that her Japanese voice actor, Minase Inori, shared that when she first saw Furina, she couldn’t tell if the character was meant to be a boy or a girl and found the ambiguity captivating.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notably the Japanese dub leans into the androgyny angle, both through Minase’s performance and Furina’s use of the personal pronoun “boku.” As a pronoun typically used by young men and boys, when used by a female character can emphasize their eccentricity and gender non-conformity, both key traits of Furina.
Returning to Furina’s design, one of the key design philosophies for her character is contradicting elements to emphasize the contradictory facets of her personality, as explained by Vivi, one of Genshin Impact's Character Concept Artists, in the La Vaguelette behind the scenes video.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One such contradicting element is the mixture of both men’s and women’s clothing that she wears. The lower half/back of her garment features a morning dress with a modified western women’s petticoat-style tail, whereas the upper half is a men’s waistcoat and vest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furina’s vest has its buttons on the right, as traditionally found on men’s clothing. This is in contrast with other Fontainian characters such as Wriothesley and Clorinde, whose buttons are placed in accordance with the traditional style for clothing made for their gender.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see the same sense of contrast in her combat animations, where she does both a masculine style and feminine style bows when performing separate abilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other elements such as Furina’s noticeably flat chest and a haircut which could belong to someone of any gender further evoke a sense of androgyny.
While I'm not trying to prove anything with this or convince anyone Furina is canonically trans beyond that their original species does not have gender in the human sense, I hope that more people can open their hearts to a trans reading of the character. What delights me most about Furina is that no matter the specific interpretation you take—the Oceanid who dreamed she could be a human girl, the human who pretended to be a goddess when really he was nothing of the sort, or someone who's neither or even both—her story and character design resonates deeply. :)

Hey Pinky, the one with the Lynel farm is back and I got an idea, which I find hilarious.
If you know Genshin Impact and are already done with Fontaine then that's easier to explain but if not I do a little headcanon for "this" Reader so nobody is confused. Well, it's a Furina!Reader! So here are some Spoilers for the Archon quest, you are warned.
Reader's full name is Reader de Fontaine.
Reader is about 500 years old.
They got cursed with immortality.
But they look very young, they look like they are 19 at the very least.
They had to play god for 500 years because Focalors wanted to fight Celestia.
Focalors is basically the godhood part of Reader.
Focalors prepared all this.
They love sweets.
They are traumatized.
Imagine yourself, a human being, living for 500 years and acting like someone you aren't.
They had to act as the people back then and wouldn't take Reader seriously.
They were actually a very soft-spoken and kind person until they had to act like the Archon of Hydro and Justice.
They act dramatic and confident, but not Ravio dramatic.
Actress dramatic
After pretending to be another person for hundreds of years, it's hard for them to act like their normal self.
Which destroyed their self-esteem and confidence.
As they have to keep it as a secret for 500 years, it is hard for them to talk about it to others, even if they trust that person.
And let's not forget about the prophecy of Fontaine "The people will all be dissolved into the waters. And only the Hydro Archon will remain, weeping on their throne."
They tried to find a solution, which they couldn't as they were not the Hydro Archon but a human.
A eating, sleeping, drinking and breathing human being!
At the end of the day the Traveller (Lumine/Aether) saved the day.
Their native language is french, Fontaine's language in Teyvat.
Their singing is beautiful especially in their native language. If you want to know how beautiful, listen to La Vaguelette from Cécilia Cara. She did the singing for Furina at that part.
They can change their looks depending on the alignment they use.
When they use Ousia their outfit is black and blue with multiple water drop ornaments with their vision on their side fixed on with a ribbon. With short hair which barely reached their shoulders.
With Pneuma their outfit is white and blue with the same multiple water drop ornaments and their vision is still on their side fixed on with a ribbon. Their hair is still barely reached their shoulders but their hackles were very long and barely covered their butt.
They are also the only person of Fontaine that can use Ousia and Pneuma but not at the same time.
With Ousia they can summon three animals of Fontaine made out of water, which aid them in battle
With Pneuma they can summon a pillar looking like a Oceanid which can heal themself and people in a certain area of radius.
They can do the Jesus Christ and walk on water!
They can bake but not cook.
Well, they can make macaroni and cheese.
So now to the boys, since Reader looks so young nobody would guess their age and since the Chain don't ask, as they think they know Reader's age. So when they finally learned hylian. The Chain are in for quite the surprise, when they learned that they are about 500 years old! THEY ARE OLDER THAN WILD!! Wind will love to hear stories from them because Fontaine is the land of Hydro and has many things you can see underwater from ruins to different sea creatures. But he and Wild would lose it when they see Reader stepping on water and walking like nothing unusual is happening. Well, it's normal for them. They even fight on water! And they can catch the fish like that as they can control the water! Wild will ask about recipes, we all know that!
Time would be the one who immediately notices that Reader is kinda acting off, like they aren't themself. But like mentioned they can't talk about it! First they are still learning the language! Second, how do you explain to someone why you did act like that when they don't know how it is back in their home? And lastly, he would think they are crazy! Acting like a deity!! So they don't say anything about that.
Warriors is with them for the clothes and especially as they have the etiquette of a royal! They can even dance the Waltzer. But they can see the difference between real and fake jewels so they would call any merchant out they see that try to scam someone or one of them. They are pretty hot-headed.
I think when they sing then Legend would keep distance as the song La Vaguelette, for example, is a love song. At first, he eventually gets around and can see them playing around with their water animals and Wind. Finally someone got that gremlin away from his stuff! But he is curious about their magic as they didn't seem to get tired even if they healed the whole group and themself! But also that it seems like the water animals hurt them when they use them (They do damage them). I don't know why but I can imagine him as the very shy guy who gives them flowers before looking away beet red and running away while tripping almost a few times. But also as the one who would be jealous when one of the others or another person gets attention from them.
Twilight is confused as they smell like water, not sea water, lake water or swamp water, just water. It's confusing but they were an Oceanid once. But if he would ask about that they would look at him strangely as like. You smell me? Do I stink?
Hyrule is so glad to have someone who can heal as well! And their singing! He is a Fae so it's hard for him not to listen! But when he asks about the background of the song and the meaning. They just say it's for a musical and a love song. So he asks more about musicals as do they even have these in Hyrule? Do they even know what a theatre is? Honest question right now.
Four is in love with their sword as it's very thin and light! But also it looks like there is a water swirl around the hilt. He found it hard to wield it as the swords they use are heavier and wider. But theirs is so thin and light so he asks how they wield it and they do. But it looked like a dance, but when you look at it more closely than you see that they can do it endlessly, like it's a neverending dance, like their role as the Archon was neverending for them. But also wants to know more about the machines back in their home.
Sky is just confused. As they can control water and walk on it! Are they a deity!? Did they know Hylia? But as they stumbled upon their words and say that they are just a human being like them, elves are part human in Teyvat after all. He is confused as he is Hylian not human and only Twilight had humans in his world but they have Hylians? They always correct him and say that they are elves, there is a difference! Hylians have Hylia's blessing, elves do not!
But still many would want to know more as Teyvat is very different from Hyrule. But Reader would kiss the Chain's cheeks as a greeting and a goodbye. So Legend and Hyrule are rip. Good luck catching their souls. They are older than Wild and Time but they give good advice, they read so many reports of crimes and research results, they are more intelligent as people give them credit for. But I think they would also listen to them as is, when it's not Wild, Hyrule listens to the elderly and they are VERY OLD. They go shopping with Warriors and whenever there is a party. They are a person that immediately fits in with the "high society" and gets information out of them without them realising! But they are scared of rain or more like what it can cause, rising of the water surface and floods. So I think that would kick in some protective instincts of the Chain and Twilight. So now they have cherry red Legend beside them as they cling on him and shiver while he tries to calm them down, which is hard. They have a trauma from that! So they mumble under their breath "Hydro Dragon, Hydro Dragon please don't cry." A chant that children say in Fontaine as it's said that when it rains then the Hydro Dragon is sad.
I have never played Genshin Impact and I don't plan to start! However, I know that there are many followers that do play Genshin and I'm willing to bet that they would be more than willing to run with this idea. XD
(Maybe. I don't get a lot of reblogs so we'll see)
I think would be really fun to just shove the Chain in the world of Genshin anyway since they're visibly similar but also not at all alike.
They could probably walk though and not be seen as the outlier, that is up until one of them opens their mouth. XD

Identity , is furina && focalors the same person ? or not?
Tumblr media
I , for one don't acknowledge the idea of focalors && furina as being the same person or the thought that furina is focalors , daughter or sibling.
I see them as an individual who used to be one but separated to become a completely different person , a reference to how god created eve from adam's rib. Eve or i'd rather say furina in this case was created with the same process on how focalors was perhaps created they are formed to become a human & was given life to experience how is it to be human but for focalors she had become a divinity even before she could experience the whole extent of how to be one -- && has to give up her humanity.
Thus creating furina -- focalors had created furina based on her image && that is the only thing that she && furina resembles to each other nothing more , nothing less ( another reference to how God created adam && eve based on his own image) even focalors had stated in her own words that furina can feel whatever she wants to feel && be whoever she wants to be because focalors knew that furina is not her , && she is her own individual person.
&& don't start with me on the reason of furina & focalors are the same cause focalors stated that she had left behind only herself that was naive && bewildered as her past self on her first day as being human -- of course focalors would have mentioned this cause -- she is saying this to express what might furina had felt the first time she had opened her eyes without any remembrance of her past -- she would be scared , naive and be wildred . This didn't feeling didn't happen only to furina but it also happened to the other oceanids who become human they would have felt the same way focalors && furina felt when they become human -- so no . This doesn't equate them as being the same person.
&& regarding to her final words to furina where she wished her to be happy && live as a human like she had wished for --
Is just focalors saying it to her cause she wished like any other god to her own creation that is furina to have a chance to finally live her life to the fullest without her playing the role of someone else , she didn't wish it not because she want furina to live her life for the two of them .
Furina && focalors are not the same in my eyes , & if they ever exist on a same timeline together i see them as being different person && has a very different kind of distinct personality (though both have love for arts && theatrics ) , even if for a brief moment when neuvilette is talking to focalors, you can immediately see what personality focalors have compared to furina meanwhile we can see snippets of furina's personality that was shown during her meeting with focalors (the mirror meeting) & during her ascension which is furina is meek, soft hearted && willing to learn. While forcalors is more of smug, cunning, && proud & eccentric. It is why i love the thought of furina cutting her hair or changing her own fashion style, colors &&& earning her own vision as to signify as breaking free from the perception that she && focalors are the same person.
so yeah overall--- they aren't the same.. && will never be.

so that archon quest, huh. Would be absolutely thrilled to hear what u have to say about fontaine act V :] i love all your takes on furina & neuvillette & fontaine as a whole, and of course childe [pretty much an honorary fontanian with how he unintentionally got wrapped up in everything whoops]
Oh boy, I have so many thoughts. To start with some non-spoilerly stuff: I loved it so much. I'm not sure if I'll say it's my favorite Archon Quest yet (I think I would have to go through some of the older ones), but I think it's safe to say Fontaine overall as an arc is my favorite. Even its weakest part (the prison stuff, tbh it was a pacing issue) was still really solid and the ending, while not perfect, really landed. Genshin continued the trend from Sumeru of having the playable characters really take the stage and god there were some great standouts (Navia/Neuvi/Furina to name my favs, but I also loved my fatui and there really isn't anyone I've disliked). And well, the quest (and Furina's chara quest) made me cry like a baby, so that's a win.
Tbh, I think my biggest issue, wasn't even really an issue with the story but just a case of I had a very clear idea of what I wanted out of it (the woes of writing speculative fic pfft) and when it wasn't that I'm like "awww darn". Thats on me, and I genuinely really loved what we got, but it do be like that sometimes haha.
Spoilers below, oh boy (also my Furina fic spoilers too lol).
Eldritch abomination Furina I'll mourn u forever. I can't complain because Furina splitting herself in two to go fuck u to the heavens is such a boss ass move I can't haha. Okay, but I will say, even if I'm probably the only one, I do wish they brought some Remuria stuff up in the main quest. They had the perfect set up with Ajax being there with his Greek myth references and just ahhhh, one can hope they do something with it later. But yes, just know it's my silly headcanon that Focalors just lied about being an Oceanid to Neuvi and is one of King Remus's fucked up Primordial Sea experiments that maybe caused the Abyss rift at the fall of Remuria.
But yes, Furina, Furina, I'm crying. She really destroyed the girl failure accusations in the most glorious way possible. She literally didn't fail once (either of her), she plotted out a plan to trick the heavens, give back what was stolen, and save her people and she did it perfectly. As you're probably well aware, I'm a big fuck u Celestia gal, so it was just so satisfying to see her just obliterate the throne (even when I was crying haha). And honestly, super relevant to the state of the real world, but her giving back sovereignty to Neuvi in my mind is a very clear decolonization metaphor. Ages past descenders came to Teyvat, killed the dragons and created their own order, and now Focalors is returning that power back to said dragon (or well, the dragon's heir, it's a bit vague if Neuvi's literally the old dragon's soul reincarnated or just the body).
The entire scene between Neuvi and Focalors was great, though I will admit I have one issue with it (and even then I go back and forth on it haha). Neuvi in that scene doesn't have a big attachment to Focalors. What I mean is that ultimately Neuvi only ever knew Furina (which side note I'll get into this next, but I do view them as the same person, but still), and with Focalors' 'death' he's not technically losing anything, the person he's sad over will still be there. Like don't get me wrong, he's very empathetic and can be sad over this person who is dying for them, but I feel like it could have been even more heartbreaking if he had met Furina/Focalors before the split, or he had interacted with Focalors somehow in the past, and so in this moment he wasn't just watching Furina's sacrifice, but the sacrifice of someone he shares memories with. But that's me being picky haha and not really a critique on the writing.
But yes, Furina! Focalors! As I previewed before, I'm going to come out swinging with a possibly hot take. They are, and always were the same person. Yes, Focalors is the divinity, but as we see after Furina is allowed to rest her persona, Furina is also super mature and knowledgeable. In Neuvi's flashback quotes of Furina, it's her softly giving important advice about living with humanity, which is what Focalors was all about. And much like Furina, Focalors loves preforming, she loves humans, she gets all excited about Furina and her future, and is sad she won't get to experience it.
Not to remotely downplay Furina's suffering (because holy shit my poor girl), but Focalors too played her role. Unlike Furina who had Neuvillette and all her friends post this, Focalors was all alone in the Oratrice, waiting for the day she had to kill herself. Furina, has the promise of a future, despite all the suffering she endured to get there. She gets the reward of a happy life as a human surrounded by people who love her, and while it was touch a go for a bit, she was told one day her play would end. In contrast, while Focalors didn't have the same anxiety that Furina had, Focalors knew from the beginning she would never get to see her people saved. Technically she, like Furina, didn't even know if it would even happen. She put her faith in Neuvillette to follow through, and while she had the utmost faith in him, she could never know for certain. But much like her mirror Furina, Focalors weighed her suffering over the people of Fontaine's, and never once faltered. Furina was willing to possibly kill herself via primordial seawater in order to keep up her ruse, whose to say Focalors wasn't the same. Smiling at Neuvillette until the last moment because she couldn't risk him interfering, hiding away her anxieties and sorrow, so he wouldn't look so sad. Furina's performance ended, Focalors' never will.
Focalors was so certain she couldn't be human, but as we see from the Oceanids it was totally possible. And even more vitally, we see from the other Archons it's possible. They might fumble around a bit (some more than others, looking at u Ei), but they are learning and immersing themselves with their people. While not an Archon, it's the same with Neuvillette. Focalors should have had the same opportunities as Furina and the rest (mostly because she is Furina), but the world isn't kind, and that's why her sacrifice hurts.
If u can't tell I have a lot of feelings about Focalors/Furina and while I can appreciate a joke about Focalors giving Furina anxiety, I'm also like, they are literally the same person working together, she deserves the world (all of her).
But yes, I can go on and on about Furina, but for now I'll move onto our boy Childe. To get it out of the way, a little disappointed that we really got no answers about him. Poor guy didn't really have any lines. Also, not big on Skirk's design, mostly the outfit. Putting her next to Dain and uh, yeah (like don't get me wrong don't mind the color scheme and all, but could she not have gotten some kind of armor. Or look more like Foul Legacy or something idk).
But onto more happier notes, I'm so happy to see Childe finally getting to do well in a fight. I know it's a meme for him to get beaten up, but my dude is the Vanguard, let him win sometimes (he doesn't technically win here, but he was fighting an eldritch whale monster for ages and helped save Fontaine, I'm giving it to him). And Skirk, while her design is mostly less to be desired, I'm winning on guessing her hair and eye color haha. Also, while I'll always love my version, I'm liking her personality so far. Her yeeting Childe, while I admit took me out a bit (I thought she threw him farther into the Abyss and was like, "uh guys, yall worried about my poor boy here???" and then was a bit baffled at them saying he was fine) was so fucking funny. It's cool to learn "Foul Legacy" refers to a literal person, and I found the fact that Skirk's relationship with Foul is basically the same as her relationship with Childe very amusing. And it seems she's Khaenri'ahn, maybe? Also, I thought she was listing off her master's other names at first, so when she said Gold I got super hyped that I guessed correctly about the narwhal being Rhine's in my fic, but then they were like nope pfft. I'll take it as a win.
Sidenote, Alice and Rhine where are yoooouuuuuu.
Ultimately, while I enjoyed the Childe and Skirk stuff, it really just feels like a set-up for later stuff. Which isn't really a problem, but I was hoping we'd get something a bit more concrete. Like, I thought we were going to get answers about the "it" that Skirk saw in him, and it would have to do with the Narwhal, but now it seems those were mostly unrelated??? While I did find baby Ajax accidentally waking up a big world eating monster up kind of hilarious, it did feel a little incidental, if that makes any sense. Like, Fontaine's doom was an accident and not the result of anyone's choices. But that might just be a me thing. (and the quest needed more Arle, where was she??? my not really based on anything theory is that whenever we get Furina (or maybe Nevui's) 2nd character quest, Arle will be the boss fight. A reverse of the normal final Harb boss fight during the Archon quest)
Okay, because I really don't want to end on a downer (as I said uptop, I genuinely adored this quest haha), here are some minor spoilers from the Narzissenkreuz Ordo quest that have me by a chokehold.
Tumblr media
I wasn't ready for a sudden Ajax. What does this mean??????
Tumblr media
And this one just makes me laugh. Whichever Ordo member wrote this, I vehemently disagree with u and am on Khaenri'ah's side with this one. I'd much rather have bread then some higher power nonsense. In my fic I tend to write Khaenri'ah more akin to a modern nation than a fantasy one, and its nice to see me vindicated pfft.
Other random notes, enjoyed that the Fatui weren't just cartoonishly evil in both the main and world quests. I like some nuance. I saw that Sandrone hint, that was fun. Though it makes me wonder when we'll get Columbina lore (especially because if the theory about Harbinger boss fight order based on the Constellation circle is true, she should be showing up soon. Though also I half think that order will break because if it doesn't, it means Sandrone will probably be the final Harb boss which is an odd choice.) As revealed on Furina's weapon, Egeria being around during Remuria raises so many questions around the timeline of events. Genshin pls tell me when the Archon war takes place in all this pls (if they tell us in some lore I haven't read yet, whoops). (also on egeria, I mourn my version but hey, she exists in my heart and in my fics pfft. I can't wait to write her in smfwtwd and venti fic, though she's getting a new name for confusion and better symbolsism)
the contrast between Neuvi and Furina after the quest is so funny and sad. Neuvi "Furina is the best, I want her to be happy". Furina, "Every hates me Neuvillette most of all, I can never face him again." And the other Archons, they are all like Furina, wow u are so cool (which just highlights Neuvi's utter disdain for them other than Nahida haha).
And most vitally, Furina and Venti should be best friends. Musically inclined performers who definitely aren't plotting to overthrow the heavens. I think they are neat (they also both have Latin names!).

Focalors' Last Dance: A Farewell to My Beloved Dragon
I'm beyond bored. So like, I'mma just write random things for now. This is just a part 1 for now ig? Let's see. Okay I'm hyping this song btw listen to it while reading ig!!!
──────────────────────────────────────
"I wonder, how would it feel to live as a human?"
Tumblr media
— Focalors, Act V; The Masquerade of Guilty
──────────────────────────────────────
"Ah, the hour of my execution is almost here. "
"For the sinner, the curtain call has come."
She sighed heavily. The petite yet dignified girl knew that by the time she became a god, she'll have to make a big sacrifice. Yet, that sacrifice cannot be known by anyone, especially the ones above, for it will anger them, and calamity will befall Fontaine once more.
"I know I may not sound like it, but... faced with death.. I find myself a little afraid..."
Her voice trembled. She knew. It's her fate. It's her destiny. It's her goal. Yet, it scared her. The thought of death. Even a god shudders at the thought of their life ending. Even if they lived for so long, even if they've seen it all, even if they're a god.. Death does not discriminate. A painful yet beautiful process, wouldn't it scare any living being?
In the process of saving everyone, she must not only collect the faith of her people, but also let one suffer; her own humanity. Is it really worth it to let one person bear the whole pain, or is it better to let everyone bear the pain an equal amount? In this case, of course only one big suffering is the better option.
She regretted needing to bring Furina into this whole mess made by the previous god. But she too was an oceanid back then, romanticizing the life of a human. So why can't her divinity experience that, too?
Well, again, it's her destiny to die, to save everyone. It's no more a suffering of one people, but two. One needs to live a facade for five centuries, while the other can't live the life she wanted. But aren't they one and the same? Maybe yes, maybe no. Actually, let's just say they're a different person
Now, she stood there, the sword hovering above her head. The sign of her death. It will soon be the curtain's call, the last dance, the ending to this whole charade of suffering, of dreaming, of hoping. Finally, everything will come to an end.
She looked back at the man behind him. Who's trying his hardest to not run to her, to keep her alive. She doesn't deserve this. But what other choices do they have to save the entirety of Fontaine?
With this, he'll get his powers back. And the people of Fontaine will live happily. Furina will live happily.
Then, why does his heart churn, aching at the incoming death of "someone whom he just met?"
The smile on her face only makes his heart hurt more. Why does she willingly let herself die?
No... He already knew... It's the strength of her love for her people that made her willingly to do this sacrifice.
He reached out to her. But it feels like she's too far. Yes... She's too far for him to reach. Too far. And he hated it. That he can't save her out of all people.
"Farewell, Neuvilette. I hope you've enjoyed the part you played these five hundred years."
「 Thus, the Sinner's Finale begin. 」
───────────────────────────────────────

Author's Note: I DIDN'T LIKE HOW THIS TURNS OUT IT'S NOT NEUVI X FOCALOR-ING... but more like the scene's recap. I just write some bs that comes out of my brain immediately... I'm sorry if this sucks or the grammar is BAD...
Oh yea first post on tumblr!!! Yippie I'm gonna cry in the corner it's pretty "weird" typing in tumblr. Also I wrote this on my phone so if it looks goofy on pc/laptop... I'm sorry...

Thots on Fontaine
I think the fact Oceanids didn't accept Focalor is very significant. Not only because of the waters that changed. I think, Furina, is what you would call a puppet Archon. She has the name, everyone believes she is. But she probably knows the truth that she isn't, not really, not quite.
Furina lied on her resume and got the job but has no clue how to do it. She is just really good with a performance.
I won't be surprised if she never even held the Gnosis. She probably knows it exists and where it is (my suspicion is the Oratrice), but the Gnosis isn't hers. Not to say she isn't a god, she is just a very minor one. Or maybe some other elemental creature.
As to why I think Focalors nerve claimed the Gnosis, it's her timidity and ignorance on the topic. When challenged in any way, she backs down quite easily. And I don't think it's her other personality, I think she knows full well what she can and can't do. And when her performance isn't enough to intimidate the other party, she back down. By all accounts, Neuvillette is technically her subject and doesn't seem to be the violent sort. But even he intimidates her to no end if she knows he isn't on her side.
The power of water is it's ability to take any shape. And Focalor is a really great representation of it. She can take shape, she just won't hold it without a container. And that container would likely have been Gnosis. If she couldn't claim it, she is mostly left with her innate powers. Nahida's power of Dendro doesn't just belong solely to her alone. Probably the same is with the water. Oceanids hold great power over water if by leaving Fontaine alone they changed the property of the waters.
But why, you ask, since Furina is so close to Celestia's ideals. Well, that's what she thinks. That's what most are made to believe. No one can know for sure how Celestia feels about it. And, given that the people of Fontaine are born with sin that cannot be absolved...
See, usually , the sinners are decided by the Divine. It's highly unlikely that Furina seems her own people are siners. It's counterproductive of her. So, who else would have proclaimed Fontaine people to be born in sin? Celestia. Oceanids and/or other Hydro elemental beings too. Maybe even the previous Archon herself. Her death is a mystery still. The sin of Fontaine people really seems like a curse. And we know that gods are really good at placing curses of people if they are born of certain land.
Now the question is, of course, why Childe was judged guilty.

🌻⁉️
So something I was thinking about yesterday (all the time actually but especially yesterday) is that Genshin theory that Focalors may have been the one who killed the original Hydro Archon and what the implications of that would be if true. Because we do actually know a bit about the original Hydro Archon 's death-- mainly in terms of the timeline
:readmore:
Focalors and the current Pyro Archon, Murata*, are stated to be particularly close because they both became Archons at around the same time, and thus were able to bond over both being new to the whole Archon thing
I know some people think all 5 of the deceased Archons died during the cataclysm 500 years ago but the fact that Focalors and Murata ascending at the same time is noted as something specific to those two already implies that 1) it was JUST these two at the time, so it WOULDN'T be at the same time as Ei, Nahida, abd the Tsaritsa as well and 2) that there were still gatherings of the Seven following Focalors and Murata joining (the gatherings of the seven ended after the cataclysm). All this to me suggests that the deaths of the original Hydro and Pyro Archons died some time between the Archon War and the Cataclysm. But then the question becomes, why?
If it were just one, it would be easy to dismiss. Either some conflict that was solely within their own nation (hence why we haven't heard about it yet) or some more personal matter (illness (are there illnesses that can kill gods?), Some 1 on 1 conflict with another god in their nation?) But the fact that they were both at the same time seems a little too coincidental to me. And yet, if there existed some sort of international conflict at a large enough scale to kill not even just one but TWO Archons, surely we would have heard about it at some point? And yet, we only hear about the Archon War (which they obviously lived through, since they were Archons) and the Cataclysm (which we already established they probably died before). So, their deaths weren't caused by some massive world war with tons of casualties, but still involved both of them somehow? And I doubt it was a conflict between the two of them, since we already know the original Seven were all close friends with each other. So, to me, the obvious conclusion is... A coordinated assassination of both these Archons.
Which does actually line up with the Focalors theory! If the og Hydro Archon was assassinated, Focalors may very well have been the perpetrator! She has a motive (becoming the new Archon), after all. But she doesn't have a clear motive to kill the og Pyro Archon...
But then, whoever killed them evidently didn't have a problem with the Archons in general. Makoto and Rukkhadevata lived long enough to see the Cataclysm, and Venti and Zhongli are still alive in the present. We don't hear anything about failed assassination attempts on any of them.
So! If Focalors did kill the Hydro Archon, and we assume the Hydro and Pyro Archons' deaths were related, that leaves three possibilities:
1) Focalors had some grudge against the Pyro Archon for some reason. No way to prove or disprove this currently but seems random and unlikely.
2) Focalors was collaborating with someone who had a motive against the Pyro Archon, or someone was inspired by the Hydro Archon's assassination to try the same thing against the Pyro Archon. This one would be boring and stupid because it's reusing the same plot for two nations. I don't like this one
3) she didn't originally plan to kill the Pyro Archon but it ended up being necessary. This one is most likely I think.
Again, she would have a clear motive against the Hydro Archon. And we know that all the original Archons were close. We also know that the og Hydro Archon was the curator of a communications line between the Seven, via the Oceanids--
A communications line that WENT DOWN after the og Hydro Archon's death because the Oceanids refused to follow Focalors's rule! And let's not forget how the oceanid boss starts the fight: "An assassin from our homeland?" Obviously the Oceanids at the very least THINK that Focalors would have reason and be willing to send assassins after them, if not KNOW so. Coincidence? I think not!
So, one of your subjects has decided she'd make a better leader than you and turned on you. You're weak and dying, but you barely have enough strength to deliver a single message. What else would you do but send a cry for help to your good pal the God of War?
But the Pyro Archon was too hasty in their actions. They rushed into unfamiliar territory with no plan and no idea who they were up against. And know that they know too much, Focalors can't afford to let them live.
Later, Focalors makes up some sob story about how she stumbled upon their bodies, how she's sad she came into power in such a tragic way but she simply must step up as Archon for her people! She has no need for the Pyro Gnosis so she sends it back to Natlan for whoever their new Archon is, then befriends that person because some of the rest of the Seven find her kinda suspicious and she could really use another Archon on her side.
At least, that was why at first. Over time, though, she's grown to see Murata as a true friend... A friend who would want nothing to do with her anymore if she ever found out what she did. All the more reason the truth can never come out.
So, uh... Don't consider all this to be, like. An actual theory? It's more like a cool concept I ended up brainrotting over, lol. It would be neat if it ended up canon tho.
Anyways. This has been me saying whatever I want, hope you all enjoyed, feel free to send a 🌻 for more random tangents
*Technically, we don't know Murata to be the current Pyro Archon, just a Pyro Archon. She was the Archon at the time the prologue chapter of the manga, which takes place 1000 years before the events of the game, but we don't know if the deaths of the og Hydro and Pyro Archons took place before or after that. However, the way Venti talks about Murata in the manga and how he talks about the current Pyro Archon in game are pretty similar, so I'm going to go out on a limb and assume they're one and the same. Could be wrong, but. So could everything here. That's kinda the point

VERSES
how wonderful life is ! default verse, shortly after the performance of "a little oceanid." though granted a vision, there remained the question of what she was to do next. to live as a human, just as she wished they could... how does one do that, really?
half-moon, half-human ! takes place during her reign as the hydro archon, a period which spans centuries. her mind is always a cacophony of thoughts, constantly thinking forward and back, perfecting and reinforcing her act. she must be perfect, she must be justice in the eyes of her people. she cannot falter, she cannot hesitate. no matter the cost, she must be the leading lady of this stage.
it feels easier to just swim down ! oceanid au // i. before egeria gifted humanity to her faithful that wished for it, she, too, was one of the many oceanids of teyvat. / ii. though the hydro sovereign had pardoned fontaine for their "sin," she could not forgive herself for her own failures. rather than insist on her selfish wish that furina lives as a human as she wished they could, what remained of focalors enacts justice differently: she seals away egeria's gift, as well as neuvillette's forgiveness, allowing instead for furina to live as an oceanid. perhaps more centuries were necessary for her healing. and one day, when her tears have dried, she could reclaim the gifts that she had always deserved.
the unseen genius ! mirror au. focalors acts as furina's confidante; they move in tandem to deceive the heavenly principles and save fontaine from the prophecy. her "mirror self" still hides within the oratrice mechanique d'analyse cardinale, occasionally appearing in the palais mermonia using bodies of water and the looking glass in the archon's personal chambers. some secrets may still come between them, and it cannot be said that divinity and humanity always see eye to eye, but their heart beats as one. their love for fontaine shall be the only thing that drowns their nation.

|| study on why i think the real focalors never been officially declared as hydro archon as soon as she had ascended , and she never had a human form until she had ascended as an archon && why furina doesn't have a voiceline towards the other archons Long post !!
okey , i already mentioned on my previous posts that the possibility of fontaine closing it's borders 500 years ago was high so focalors and furina can prevent the other nations of knowing about furina's true identity -- && this is why i think the same reason why furina doesn't have any voiceline with any of the archons && that is because she had ' never ' meet them .
You see it was never mentioned ( not that i know off ) on what year furina was made , but one thing is for sure that furina ascended as a decoy to ' focalors ' thus it means that this could have happened as soon as egeria had perished , meaning that focalors had planned to create furina even before she could ascend as god , though the real focalors had never really ' officially' had been declared as the hydro archon because it was given towards furina -- cause as soon egeria died she had left her humanity behind and gave it to furina && she (real focalors) never become fontaine's ruler or never had a chance to do so -- && why is that? cause if she had one point become a ruler first before she created furina && let her act as focalors then the heavenly principles , other archons && fontainians would immediately recognize the drastic change in focalors personality --- and this would cause her plans to fail - big time so i do think that she had a chance to take the role of sitting on her throne in fontaine in day one.
another thing i have noticed that other archons had never really known what focalors looks like or what her real personality is like, they only based on rumors or what they heard of ( as what nahida stated that she is peculiar person when we asked her what she is like at the end of sumeru archon quest) . The thing is focalors is a familiar of egeria && considering that egeria is one of the original seven , the familiars could have meet the other familiars of the other archons ( adeptus / ei / yae / etc) at one point , && they probably knew each other--- look at yae knowing about ganyu -- so they must know the oceanids familiars of egaria , and the thing is if this oceanids where ' humans ' already -- then the others would know of what are their looks && personality is but like i said no one in the other nation knows what kind of archon is focalors thus this further prove that focalors during the reign of egeria was never a human , she was still an oceanid when she was familiar . she only become a human when she had ascended -- cause if she was a human even during egeria's reign , then yae , the adeptis , or other archons would have mentioned or hinted at that they know who focalors is but they didn't-- thus this lead me to think that focalors was chosen to be the next hydro archon as well because she is a blank canvas -- a new archon that the heavenly principles && teyvat doesn't know about. && Egeria knew that the prophecy would pass at some point so it makes me think that egeria && focalors had planned all of this at the very beginning.
they want a blank canvas cause they want to make a fresh start , a start that has no blemishes to begin with , no connection towards the past , no connection towards other archons or anything like that or no connection to the ' original sin ' thus the creation of furina. Furina was made to not know anyone, not know anything && not know of what was exactly going on, heck she doesn't even know that she was talking with focalors ( cause she calls her mirror-me and focalors settled for that ) furina is the blank canvas , cause they want to make sure that furina won't reveal anything and to make everyone believe her role as the hydro archon , and to make her create her own story without any association of the original sins cause this would be her justice later on (think of it as us human beings -- in the bible it was said that we are descendants of adam && eve , and this two folks had created the biggest sin that caused for god to curse the mankind , but then centuries pass - adam && eve is gone but us still exist but the gravity of the sins they had done million years ago was not that heavy anymore and it is just like furinas ) && it is why she never had any voicelines towards the other archons -- cause she had never meet them personally , yes she might have heard them during her 500 year reign , but i don't think she had connection with them knowing that this folks would know in instant that she is fake or perhaps focalors had advised her not to connect with them since this would jeopardize everything.
So long story short , focalors had only had human form when egeria died , focalors had never been declared as the hydro archon -- cause furina is the one who had ascended for her towards the human eyes -- furina never knew the other archons cause she had never interacted with them
