Welcome to Pollapalooza, our weekly polling roundup.

Poll of the week

For some time, the conventional wisdom (and I largely agree with it) around the upcoming midterms has been that Democrats are modest favorites to win the House, while Republicans are likely to hold the Senate. Democrats, who have 49 Senate seats at the moment,1 might win GOP-held seats in Arizona and Nevada, but it seems likely they’ll lose at least one of the 10 seats they hold in states that President Trump carried in 2016.

But the 2018 Senate map is shifting — mostly in ways that make it more likely that Democrats could flip that chamber too. If you’ve only been paying attention to the House, it’s time to check back in on the upper chamber.

Our poll of the week, for example, comes from Tennessee. In the race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Bob Corker, Democrat Phil Bredesen (Tennessee’s former governor) leads GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn 45 percent to 35 percent, according to a Middle Tennessee State University poll of 600 registered voters.2 (Blackburn and Bredesen are almost certain to win their respective parties’ primaries in August.) Seventeen percent of voters were undecided.

A poll in December showed the two effectively tied, so this MTSU survey could be an outlier. And I’m skeptical Bredesen will win by double digits in ruby-red Tennessee, where Trump won by 26 percentage points in 2016. But at the same time, Bredesen has deep roots in the state. He was the mayor of Nashville, and then got himself elected governor twice (in 2002 and 2006), winning his re-election campaign by 39 points. Blackburn is likely to run as a Trump ally, but the president is not as popular in Tennessee as you might think, considering his margin of victory there in 2016: He’s only barely above water, according to most surveys. The MTSU poll put his approval rating in the state at 50 percent, with 41 percent disapproving. Morning Consult had him at 55-41 in March. And Gallup, aggregating all their 2017 tracking polls, put him at 50-44.

All of which is to say that Bredesen has a real chance — and Democrats could pick up a seat in the South that, not long ago, looked unwinnable. If a Democrat is going to win a statewide federal race in Tennessee in the foreseeable future, this is probably the time, when all the conditions are right: an open seat (i.e. no incumbent, and especially no incumbent Republican), an unpopular GOP president with lukewarm support even in the Volunteer State, and a strong Democratic candidate.

Meanwhile, Arizona could have two Senate seats up for grabs this November.

It’s been clear for a while that Democrats might take one of Arizona’s seats, with incumbent Republican Sen. Jeff Flake retiring. But — and look, it’s uncomfortable to discuss this — Sen. John McCain’s health now has major political implications as well. McCain, who has represented Arizona in the Senate for more than three decades, is suffering from brain cancer and has not been on Capitol Hill since December. If McCain resigns or passes away before May 30, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, would appoint a temporary replacement. But there would be a primary in August for the seat and an election in November.3

About half of Arizona voters approve of Trump and half disapprove, according to the recent Morning Consult poll. Trump won the state by less than 4 points. Arizona isn’t all that red, in other words. And if there are two open seats, the chances are that much higher that at least one of them will feature an uber-conservative GOP nominee, which might make it hard to win a general election. In the race for the Flake seat, the GOP establishment has coalesced around U.S. Rep. Martha McSally, who is running in the Republican primary against the tea party-aligned Kelli Ward and former Phoenix-area sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was convicted of criminal contempt for refusing to follow a judicial order to stop racially profiling and detaining Latinos. (Arpaio was pardoned by Trump last year.)

If the McCain seat is open, Arpaio, Ward or another candidate who might be too conservative for the state could switch to run in that race instead. It may be hard for more establishment Republicans in Arizona to lock the anti-establishment wing of the party out of both seats.

Like in Arizona, Democrats are often enthusiastic about their chances in Texas but almost always lose in federal statewide races there. That said, Democratic congressman Beto O’Rourke outraised incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in the last quarter of 2017. And O’Rourke raised even more cash in the first quarter of 2018, a sign he’s waging a serious campaign.

We don’t have any recent polls of this race, but it’s worth watching. Cruz has the advantage; Texas is still unquestionably a red state, after all. But his re-election can’t be taken for granted anymore. Case in point: The Cook Political Report moved the race from “solid Republican” to “likely Republican.” So did CNN.

So Democratic prospects are looking better in Tennessee, Arizona and Texas. There is one race, though, where the outlook seems to be improving for the GOP: Florida. Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, officially announced this week that he is challenging Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. Everyone already knew Scott was going to run for the seat, but in such a Democratic-leaning environment, it’s gotta be a little reassuring for Republicans that a strong candidate like Scott officially took the plunge. Florida is about evenly divided between the two parties, so this was always going to be a close race, and polls have suggested Nelson and Scott are running neck and neck.

The race may have even gotten a bit tighter in recent weeks, as only one of those polls was in the field after Scott signed a set of gun control measures into law last month in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. That was a high-profile move, and one that might appeal to more moderate Florida voters in both parties.

Other polling nuggets

A poll out of Washington’s 5th Congressional District suggests that longtime Republican incumbent Cathy McMorris Rodgers will face some real competition. The poll, conducted by Elway Research, showed Rodgers with a 44 percent to 38 percent lead over Democrat Lisa Brown, with 16 percent undecided.

A Quinnipiac poll found that 84 percent of Democrats have a favorable view of the Parkland students who have been calling for new gun-control laws, but only 22 percent of Republicans feel the same — 62 percent of Republicans have an unfavorable view of the students.

The Quinnipiac poll, taken April 6-9, also found that 69 percent of Americans (including 55 percent of Republicans and 82 percent of Democrats) believe that President Trump should not fire Robert Mueller.

A quarter of Facebook users believe that the service has made their lives better, according to a YouGov/CBS News survey. Eleven percent feel it has made their lives worse, and 63 percent feel that their lives haven’t changed either way.

39 percent of Americans believe that the GOP’s new tax law is benefitting them personally, according to a new Greenberg Research poll. There was a strong partisan divide in who agreed: 61 percent of Republicans vs. only 20 percent of Democrats.

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, who has been accused of sexual assault, is under pressure to step down. A Mason-Dixon poll conducted last week finds that 48 percent of Missourians think he should resign, 36 percent think he should not. Still, there was a large partisan divide in responses, with a majority of Republicans believing he should not step down.

A Mason-Dixon poll of Missouri registered voters also found Republican Josh Hawley in a statistical tie with incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, who is up for re-election in November — 45 percent of respondents supported McCaskill and 44 percent preferred Hawley, with 11 percent undecided. In addition, 17 percent of registered voters polled said they were not familiar with Hawley.

A Washington Post poll found that 20 percent of adults have attended a political rally, protest or speech in the past two years. Half said they had signed a petition, 41 percent have boycotted a product or service for political reasons, 40 percent have contacted an elected official, 29 percent said they have contributed money to a political group or campaign, and 11 percent had volunteered for a political party or campaign.

Americans are split on whether or not the U.S. has a responsibility to get involved in the conflict in Syria, according to a YouGov/Economist poll, but they are not split along party lines. Twenty-eight believe that the U.S. has a responsibility to get involved (including 36 percent of Democrats and 32 percent of Republicans), while 37 percent believe the U.S. does not have that responsibility and 35 percent are not sure.

Harvard’s Institute of Politics poll found that 64 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds are more fearful than hopeful about the future of America.

A survey of about 6,000 teenagers by the bank Piper Jaffray found that only 8 percent considered Facebook their favorite social media platform. Snapchat led with 45 percent, and Instagram (which is owned by Facebook) followed at 26 percent.

44 percent of pet owners buy birthday or holiday gifts for their pets, according to an SSRS poll.

YouGov asked 31,000 Brits who their favorite member of the Spice Girls was. Baby Spice was the most popular, and fans of Scary Spice were most likely to describe themselves as feminists.

Trump’s approval rating

Trump’s job approval rating is 40.6 percent; his disapproval rating is 53.3 percent. Last week, his approval rating was 40.2 percent, compared with a disapproval rating of 53.8 percent.

The generic ballot

The Democrats hold a 46.2 percent to 39.6 percent advantage on the generic congressional ballot this week. Last week, Democrats were up 47.1 percent to 39.1 percent.

My stomach is turning over because Nancy Pelosi has said TWO things that I agree with; a fun hot topic that reeks of political theatre and circus; and more story(third installment)

One of the things she said was awhile back and I was already hot and heavy on that topic and that is the Democrats need to focus on policy not impeachment. They haven’t done anything with it yet, but at least she put it out there. Others have said it to, but after me she was the first person from the Democrats who tried to initiate the Democrats doing what they need to do.

The second was the other night and when I first heard it, that is when my stomach turned. She was on air talking about Trump is trying to goad them into impeaching him. Others have said this also, but to hear it from her turned my innards a bit. It cannot be that she is right about anything and for her to be on target TWICE probably means the world is going to end. So, say your prayers.

All kidding aside I do want to touch on these points a bit. The second one is the easier one, Trump would love the House to impeach him because he knows he gets “exonerated” in the Senate. No way no how is McConnell going to let the Senate impeach him. He will twist that process around till it falls with a giant thud. Then all the wonderful Trumps and Trumpites go to the public screaming how wrong the Democrats are, win in 2020 and we all kiss the Constitution goodbye. Pretty obvious, yet I give Ms. Pelosi credit for realizing the danger impeachment might be without giant amounts of undeniable evidence that Trump is the criminal that is Trump.

The first point is more fun to play around with in thinking. I agree whole heartedly that the Democrats need to attack Trump on the public policy front. And I mean hot and heavy, in the press, in his face to the public. They need to hammer out some very specific moderate proposals that large segments of the middle class can get behind including some members of his base. There are some members that can be drawn away with some hard-hitting proposals that they see benefit them. Most of these were on the fence with Trump in the first place, they either didn’t like H Clinton or were on board with Trump’s drain the swamp verbiage hoping beyond hope he might do it. People still hate DC for not getting anything done so the Democrats pushing through some legislation that either the Senate doesn’t act on or Trump is forced to sign, or veto could get real interesting in the public relations war.

It does have to be very serious policy and cannot and I must emphasize even though some Dems will disagree that is moderate in tone. Yet, here is the kicker.

Two approaches must be contemplated with same end game to be successful.

First: Does the current Democratic Congress basically set the tone for the 2020 Democratic primary by creating policy that is moderate in tone, but just liberal enough that the Senate balks at or Trump vetoes setting the stage for Biden to swoop in the primaries with just enough changes in his platform to pull the moderates fully into the picture thereby pulling enough of Trump’s base that he cannot win. Trump’s strategy then becomes having the Senate compromise enough on one or two of the issues to look good and sign a rational public policy bill that he touts to the public and he wins the public relations war and keeps his base intact also pulling independent conservatives to him with the misguided thought he can do something. There is the potential for some real political intrigue here. The endgame for the Democrats though is to pass some real legislation in 2020 that is moderate and productive thereby not losing the House in 2022 and things fall apart again. Again, Trump’s endgame is to play one or two policies the Democrats pass and sign it with major media coverage right after the conventions are over. Just pull the carpet right out from under the Dems. Either way in this scenario, we just get basic political wars and some of the hate rhetoric can calm down.

Second is trickier yet needs to have the same endgame. If the Democrats are successful in winning in 2020, they need to produce moderate legislation that benefits the middle class in very obvious ways. In this scenario the Democrats must show a very united front in the primaries, which by nature are supposed to be contentious. Basically, they must write the Democratic platform before it starts instead of creating a legislative platform and have the candidates fight it out about which one can implement it successfully. So, instead of the Dems picking the candidate like they did with HC in 2016 then have her lose half the voters in the Midwest with her pretentious attitude, find the platform that works and be boring in the primary and let the battle be about who can win in 2020. This can be less divisive which produces a counter to Trump’s rhetoric because he will be attacking the Dems at every character he can muster out of his thumbs on Twitter. They need to stick to a very strong policy front and call out Trump in unison on the policy at every chance they get. Basically, make him open his mouth and try to put two coherent sentences together. Most of his base won’t pay attention, yet again enough will that it throws the Midwest back to the Dems.

Now I am not advocating that the Dems win, I am just giving them good advice they will never listen to and Trump wins again and I throw up all over this computer since I can sit around and I say I told you so like I did with HC. Remember I said as far back as 2014 or 2015, if the Dems nominate HC they would lose. And the only reason it was close was because the Reps picked Trump. The hatred by so many mid westerners of HC and the pretentious left is so strong that it is going to take some serious platform issues and results for the Dems to retake the Midwest with enough momentum to shut Trump down.

My hope is still for new parties, which I never do anything about, but whine. The true measure of success.

Now on a completely different note (still like Monty Python) one Dem in Congress is really doing his research, well I guess he already did since he was a Constitution in Law professor before running for office. Anyway, the Atlantic online has an interview article where he, the Representative, is asked some questions about something called “power of inherent contempt”. It is a set up article so he can bring up the topic, yet it could produce some seriously good political theatre. And I mean theatre. The endgame would be the Sargent of Arms for the House goes and arrests William Barr for contempt of Congress for thumbing his nose at their subpoena. According to Representative Raskin of Maryland this was something that was done in the 1800’s and is still on the books so to speak.

He admits most Representatives did not know this process exists but is talking about it on his committee which just happens to be the House Judiciary Committee. It would be his committee that is one of the committees that can bring this to the floor for a vote to attempt.

Can you imagine the scene on TV of William Barr being dragged out of his office by the House Sargent of Arms, possibly even in handcuffs? I am barely containing myself to type. This would be hilarious. Would someone from the Attorney General’s office attempt to intervene. The FBI? Do they have the authority to intervene? Can you imagine Sean Hannity on TV that night? Does Trump think he can send the Secret Service to intervene? And what if they did? Or didn’t? We are talking some serious theatre here folks.

Unfortunately we do not have HST and with Ralph Steadman to truly illustrate this madness for us if this was to go down. Can you imagine how crazy the thoughts streaming forth from his keypad? Just the prose of HST and illustrations of William Barr alone would be priceless. I would love to try, but alas I will save you dear reader from an amateurish hack job.

Very dangerous for the country and only ugly end games would play out. Trump has already let us know he doesn’t give a damn about our Constitution or us. It is self-preservation and self-enrichment only for this man. There would be no respect for the process. It would just depend on how many of the people around him react with him. Very scary and absolutely hilarious simultaneously.

The Democrats probably will hold Barr in contempt, just what happens next is going to be too fun.

And on another (Steve Martin) wild and crazy thought, the Dems should nominate Colbert to run. He is too left leaning for me, yet he is hilarious and at least the State of the Union message would be worth watching. And maybe a few of his press conferences. Trump isn’t getting any real legislation done, so maybe if we handcuff Colbert policy wise and just enjoy the Presidency for four years it might just be worthwhile. Didn’t he make some noise around running for Senate in South Carolina once?

More story (third installment)

So he kept walking with no interruptions for what we would call a very long time. Yet, since time doesn’t register for him, he had no notice of the amount of distance he covered. Every time he would come to a cross path, he would still look left and then go forward. Eventually and very slowly he started to notice something different about the view to the left on these cross paths. Every time he came across one, he, lets say, felt something there. Then over time he also felt something above him. He didn’t know the word flying, but we would say something may have flown over him because of a flittering sound from above. The sound always headed towards the left side of the path. Had he always felt something was there or heard the flittering sound? The towers still hummed, the occasional lights still flickered, was it in the towers, so maybe the flittering had always been there. What made him notice anything?

Finally at one path he turned left and attempted to head towards the area that was different. This time he moved much further into and he stopped. What was different? Obviously the towers were behind him now. He could turn around and go back onto the paths. He looked down. Was he on the same type of path now? He walked backwards to compare. After walking back some he did notice a change. There was no feeling different as it relates to being smooth. The path stayed smooth, but maybe what we call feet sunk in a bit more on the path away from the towers. He walked away from tower paying attention to his feet. They were there, but they did seem to sink into the surface as he walked.

He ventured further. The path stayed the same and his feet did not sink further as he walked. He was conscious though of the difference. And this is an important point, as he walked further away from the towers into this area that still did not have definitive surroundings, he became more conscious. He became conscious of self, of his past journey, of the idea he was headed into something new. All his senses became more aware and he heard more, there was nothing to see everything was like for us walking in fog, but he felt he was seeing this fog, he felt his feet on the ground, could make discernable understanding of his feet sinking a bit on the path. All this was very new, yet very very familiar.

He looked back and could no longer see the towers. And he understood he was not seeing them. He distinctly remembered them, so he know the fog had enveloped them. One feeling he did not have was fear. In fact, he felt a quiet serenity as he pushed forward. And as he walked further, he felt like he was going uphill. He felt his legs moving differently each time he stepped and he felt the journey more labored. The path greeted him with each step a little closer to him as he stepped. This wasn’t like walking up a set of stairs, but as you walk up a hill you feel your feet hit the ground sooner than the previous step as the ground moves up in front of you. He felt that. There was no line of sight to confirm upward movement, he just felt it in the stepping process.

Time still wasn’t a factor so he did not know how long he was walking in this new environment. The further he walked though the more awareness of himself and the possibility of other existences emerged in his thinking. He grasped he was not alone. He did not have concrete evidence of another entity, but he found himself aware that he could not be the only being or creature or presence in this fog or while walking down the tower paths.

He heard it. He didn’t know what it was, or to use a term like a melodic sound, but that is what it would be to us. A melody emerging to his hearing coming from in front of him. He didn’t realize it immediately, but he had picked up his pace to head towards the sound.

And then there was a blinding light and a host of creatures or presences, or persons headed towards him, some walking, some running, some flying, all shouting with great joy, singing, and talking over each other in different languages all he understood. Initially this was overwhelming, then he remembered something.

Still, he’s arguably the front-runner in the 7th District Democratic primary. Plenty of Democrats would prefer someone more liberal — the problem is that they can’t agree on whom. Emily’s List is backing Allentown City Solicitor Susan Wild, while Bernie Sanders has stumped for pastor Greg Edwards, who has also raised the most cash. Some observers believe Morganelli would help Democrats win back working-class voters in this evenly split (D+0.04) district, but the 7th District is a bit like the 1st: It’s swingy enough that a more conservative Democratic nominee might have an advantage, but it’s not red enough that a liberal nominee would be at much of a handicap (especially in a Democratic-leaning environment). Republicans, meanwhile, will choose between Marty Nothstein, who won an Olympic gold medal in cycling in 2000, and former Lehigh County Commissioner Dean Browning.

In a high Democratic wave, Republican Rep. Scott Perry could be swept away in his R+11 10th District, but it’s not clear who the strongest Democratic contender would be. Former Senate and White House staffer Shavonnia Corbin-Johnson unexpectedly posted the district’s best fundraising haul in the first quarter of 2018; she also recently earned the endorsement of Emily’s List. Other Democrats in the running include former Army Lt. Col. George Scott and public health scientist Eric Ding.

Finally, in the 14th District, state Sen. Guy Reschenthaler faces state Rep. Rick Saccone for the GOP nomination. Saccone, of course, became persona non grata in the Republican Party after losing an eminently winnable March special election to Democrat Conor Lamb, but Reschenthaler has come under fire too: He wrote an effusive foreword for a book that contained anti-gay and racist language, calling it “commonsense” and “what we all wanted to say.” Those flaws and March’s shocker notwithstanding, either Republican should be able to hold this now-even-redder (R+29) seat in the fall.

These aren’t the only Keystone State districts worth your time, but my editor does give me word counts for these things. The truly dedicated might also pay attention to the Democratic primary in the 4th and the Republican primaries in the 9th and 13th. In addition, three districts likely to be targeted in the fall will not see competitive primaries tonight: the Republican-held 6th and 17th Districts (D+5 and R+6, respectively) and the Democratic-held 8th (R+7).

In statewide races, Rep. Lou Barletta is expected to sweep aside state Rep. Jim Christiana in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Even though Pennsylvania is 2 points to the right of the rest of the country, incumbent Sen. Bob Casey is one of the less vulnerable vulnerable Democrats in the Senate, which is unlikely to change no matter who wins the Republican nomination.

At last, one of the nastiest primaries in the country has unfolded on the Republican side for Pennsylvania governor. State Sen. Scott Wagner, the owner of a waste-management company, and health care consultant Paul Mango have both plowed millions into their own campaigns, using an onslaught of TV ads to muscle their way to the front of the pack. In recent weeks, they’ve gone nuclear on one another: Mango aired an ad so savage that the state GOP (which formally endorsed Wagner) called on it to be taken down. When Mango refused, Wagner issued a withering response ad starring his daughter. (Sample quote: “Paul Mango, you’re not half the man my father is.”) A third candidate, attorney Laura Ellsworth, is hoping to pull a Mike Braun and capture a plurality on the strength of voters turned off by the negativity. The latest survey of the race, from Susquehanna Polling and Research, does show her closing, but she still sits in third place (18 percent) behind Wagner (37 percent) and Mango (23 percent).

Polls of the general election have concurred that Wagner would come the closest to beating Gov. Tom Wolf, but the Democratic incumbent would still start out with a healthy edge; perhaps the vicious primary has already taken its toll.

Nebraska

Races to watch: 2nd Congressional District Polls close: 9 p.m. Eastern

Lincoln City Councilwoman Jane Raybould is very likely to be the Democratic nominee against Republican Sen. Deb Fischer. And state Sen. Bob Krist is the only candidate with serious money and experience in the Democratic primary for the right to face GOP Gov. Pete Ricketts. (Both Republicans are heavily favored in this R+27 state.) That leaves Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District as by far the most interesting race in the Cornhusker State.

Although the district has a partisan lean of R+6, Republican incumbent Don Bacon won it in 2016 by just 1 percentage point over then-Rep. Brad Ashford. Nancy Pelosi and the DCCC both want Ashford to be their standard-bearer once again, and with $571,000 raised, he looks like the favorite. But nonprofit executive Kara Eastman has collected a respectable $356,000 and has campaigned as an unapologetic member of the anti-Trump #Resistance. While Ashford has sung the virtues of compromise and adopted middle-of-the-road positions, Eastman has pledged to fight for liberal priorities like single-payer health care. If there’s one race that epitomizes the Democratic divide between pragmatism and progressivism, it’s this one — and in a reddish toss-up district, the stakes are high.

Idaho

Races to watch: governor Polls close: 10 p.m. Eastern in the southern half of the state, 11 p.m. Eastern in the north

There are three front-runners in the GOP primary for governor, and each represents a different wing of the party. Mild-mannered Lt. Gov. Brad Little, whom outgoing Gov. Butch Otter has endorsed, touts his inside knowledge of government workings. Wealthy developer Tommy Ahlquist occupies the “outsider businessman” lane; nearly $2 million of his own money has made him by far the race’s biggest spender. And U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador is running as the fiery conservative: He is a co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus and boasts that he is so close with Trump that he interviewed for a Cabinet position.2

The campaign has been mean-spirited, with Ahlquist in particular taking heat for writing in Marco Rubio instead of voting for Trump in the 2016 general election and donating to his potential Democratic opponent in 2014. The outcome of the primary shouldn’t change the consensus that Republicans are very likely to retain this governorship, but it may have major policy implications. Idahoans are expected to vote on a ballot measure to expand Medicaid this fall, and Labrador has said that he would consider overturning the initiative if it were to pass.

In the Democratic primary, businessman A.J. Balukoff, the party’s 2014 gubernatorial nominee, has spent six times as much money as state Rep. Paulette Jordan, who would be Idaho’s first female governor and the first female Native American governor in the country. Jordan has drawn the endorsement of Planned Parenthood, Democracy for America and other national progressive groups, but Idaho Democratic politicians are largely in Balukoff’s corner, an acknowledgment that he is a better fit for this conservative (R+34) state.

Oregon

Oregon is 9 points more Democratic than the nation as a whole, and the state has had only Democratic governors since the mid-1980s. But in the past, moderate Republicans have ridden the overwhelming financial backing of Oregon’s business community (Oregon has no campaign contribution limits) to within just a few percentage points of Mahonia Hall.

State Rep. Knute Buehler is trying to chart that same course against incumbent Democrat Kate Brown in 2018, but he has hit an unexpected speedbump in primary challengers Sam Carpenter, a consultant whose slogan is “Make Oregon Great Again,” and Greg Wooldridge, a former Navy pilot. The staunchly conservative duo have criticized Buehler for his many centrist positions, such as support (with some exceptions) for legal abortion, sanctuary cities and gun control. Buehler has felt threatened enough that he is blanketing the state with ads that accuse Carpenter of not paying his taxes; Buehler poured twice as much money into broadcast advertising in April alone as his opponents have spent, combined, in the entire campaign. An internal poll for Carpenter’s campaign claimed that Buehler led Carpenter 39 percent to 24 percent, with Wooldridge at 12 percent, suggesting that the media blitz was working. (Again, though, internal polls are highly suspect — Carpenter released the poll to argue that the anti-abortion vote was being split and that Wooldridge should drop out.) Most likely, however, only Buehler has the crossover appeal to put a scare into Brown in the fall.
