"Does Jake have to come?"
"Well we are spending the week with my family and he is my brother." Y/n laughs as she pulls the hat box from the top of her closet. Bradley sits on the edge of her bed next to her open suitcase that's barely packed. "Besides I know you and him can't get into any arguments because Jake turns into a good ol southern momma's boy the minute we enter city limits." She sets the hat box down behind Bradley on the nightstand before moving back to her closet to pull out a few shirts and her ranch jeans that she keeps hidden in the back of her closet.
"Oh now that I gotta see." Bradley chuckles.
"Well you won't get see much except for most likely thanksgiving dinner and church Sunday morning." Y/n ruffles her boyfriend's hair. "He usually disappears either onto the ranch or visiting Lottie."
"Whose Lottie?" Bradley questions, y/n's eyes widen knowing she's already said too much.
"Nope! I'm not giving you fuel to use against him." She drops her tennis shoes and a pair of heeled boots into her suitcase along with her toiletries bag on top of her clothes and zips the suitcase shit.
"Hey Y/n! Y'all ready?" Jake asks poking his Stetson covered head into her room.
"All set! B can you grab my hat?"
"You didn't pull one out." B tells her, pulling her suitcase off the bed, walking it over to Jake who laughs at Bradley's response.
"No man. She's talking about her Stetson that's in the box by the bed." Jake points as y/n opens the box to reveal her Santa Fe Outdoors Hat she's own since high school.
"I didn't even know you owned one of those." Bradley stares in awe as she places the hat on her head and pulls her boots on.
"Hey when that sun is blaring down on you while you're chasing cattle, you're almost guaranteed to have one by the next day." Y/n laughs, using her index finger to lift Bradley's jaw closed, "Let's go Bradshaw!"
19 hours in the car was too long for y/n to deal with Bradley and Jake's bickering that she forced Jake's silence by making him drive most of the way, and pushing Bradley's 6ft frame to sit in the back of Jake's truck.
Despite the complaints from Bradley, the trip was finally peaceful as they pulled through the front gates, parking just in front of the house.
"Oh! Theres my babies!" Adeline Seresin calls walking down the steps to where Jake parked the truck.
"Hi mom." Jake is the first to greet her as Y/n has to practically drag Bradley from the backseat.
"Oh my sweet boy!" Adeline plants a kiss on each of his cheeks leaving bright red prints behind. Bradley chuckles at the sight of Jake.
"Oh and you must be Bradley! I'm so glad you could join us!" Now its Jake's turn to laugh as his mother plants a kiss on each of Bradley's cheeks.
"Hi mama."
"Oh hello y/n." Adeline gives a quick hug to her only daughter and immediately turns back to Jake. "Alright tell me everything!"
Y/n sighs, moving to the back of the truck and pulling the bags out, Bradley walking over to help.
"What was that?" Bradley questions, picking up most of the bags.
"Don't worry about it. I'm used to it." Y/n replies bluntly, walking up to the front door of her childhood home.
"So how's California? Any pretty girls I should expect to see on your arm when you come down for Christmas?" Adeline asks Jake.
"Thanks for the help Hangman! We'll gladly get YOUR bags for you." Y/n groans, watching her mother gush over Jake.
"Y/n please! Jake works very hard at work. You can put in some effort for once and help out."
"For the millionth time mom! Jake and I do the same thing!" Jake groans, he knew there was going to be an argument between his mom and sister, what he didn't expect for it to happen. "You've seen the videos!" Y/n shouts, setting the bags down by the hallway.
"And you seriously expect me to believe those were actually you?" Adeline scoffs. "Bradley I don't know what you see in this girl. You know the only reason she went into the Navy was because my Jakey was going? Highly doubt she even managed to graduate all those years ago. Pretty sure she's been faking it the whole time."
"Mom!" Jake protests. Bradley steps up to interject but his stopped by y/n's hand on his chest, she turns to face him.
"Don't. It'll only make it worse." She mutters. "I'm gonna go for a ride." She softly announces to the room, walking straight towards the back door.
"Way to go Mom." Jake mutters as he walks over to Bradley. Bradley tries to stop y/n but Jake catches him. "Hey, give her a minute. When she says she's going for a ride, she needs like 30-45 minutes to cool off."
"She used to do that often?"
"Yea, first time I followed right behind her. About 3 hours later they found me hog tied in the creek. You think I'm different out here. She shuts out who she really is here." Jake starts picking up the bags. "Come on, I'll show ya to the rooms."
"Why does your mom treat her like that?" Bradley asks as they step into Jake and Y/n's childhood loft. Y/n's bedroom door to the left and Jake's to the right.
"Mom's always tried to get y/n to be more of a girl. But y/n wanted to do everything but that. When we both left, mom didn't talk to her for 6 years and then sudden just started pretending that y/n wasn't even her daughter. They fought a lot before we left then it just kind of turned into passive aggressive comments over the dinner table. And then whatever this is." Jake explains. "Y/n's room is through that door. I'll be over here if you need something. Welcome to the shit show." Jake laughs, slapping a hand on Bradley's shoulder before walking away.
Bradley walked into Y/n's childhood bedroom. Not much had changed since she was in high school. Her queen size bed was neatly made, clearly not been slept in since probably last Christmas at the latest. Trophies littered the shelves, many for barrel racing and others for random school things. An entire shelf dedicated to her FFA heifers, two of which won first place. Bradley's attention though is drawn to the wall covered in trophies, medals, tiaras, sashes, and participant number sheets. The photo collage in the center made it clear that these were dance awards. Ranging from jazz to ballet to even line dancing, those photos prominently featuring someone who Bradley can only assume to be Jake dancing alongside her, judging by how similar the two looked.
Bradley chuckles at the though of Jake being a dancer but then again it was just line dancing. Bradley sees the glitter of something in the corner of his eye and spots a tiara place safely in a clear box, Miss Teen Texas written boldly on the side followed by Y/n's name written in a loopy cursive. Clearly that was part of Adeline's plot to get y/n to be more girly, along with dance. He glances at the photos noticing that wasn't the first title she won. Miss Hays County Teen, Miss Austin Teen, Miss Texas Teen, there were even photos from when she competed for Miss USA Teen.
Bradley looks back onto the girl he fell in love with. He never knew she competed in pageants, rodeos, and dance. Of all the things he'd found, the rodeos and line dancing were the only things that fit with the girl he knew. Y/n wasn't super girly, sure she loved dresses and frilly shirts on occasion, but loved a good pair of jeans or sweatpants mostly.
He fell in love with the badass Naval Aviator that could knock Jake "Hangman" Seresin's ego down a few pegs with a simple glare, who stood up to commanding officers when they went to far on a fellow aviator, who looked his mother in the face and said she was so in love with him that she'd doesn't know if she'd make it loosing him and clearly the girl staring back at him in most of those photos was not her.
Bradley's thoughts are interrupted by Jake knocking on the bedroom door. "Hey you know how to ride a horse right? Or do I gotta make you ride bitch with me?" Bradley mutters a sarcastic chuckles before replying.
"Yes I know how to ride a horse." Bradley sasses, following Jake out to the barn.
"Alright, well saddle up cowboy. We got a girl to check on." Jake tosses an old straw cowboy hat at Bradley the minute they reach the barn. Bradley struggles to keep up with Jake, having not ridden a horse since high school when he and his parents were back in Virginia. Jake goes racing across the land, Bradley seconds behind him, only slowing when they reach the trail head at the edge of the woods. They swiftly but carefully make their way through until the come to a clearing where they see another horse tied to a wooden post. Jake jumps down, tying his horse up before grabbing the reigns for Bradley's hops down. "She should be just through those trees." Jake points, Bradley immediately walking through.
"Baby?" He calls, not getting a response. "Y/n?" He hears the sniffles and looks closer to the edge of the look out, spotting y/n sitting on the edge. Sitting down beside her, y/n immediately rests her head on his shoulder. "You're not gonna hogtie me and leave in a creek right?" Bradley checks making y/n laugh.
"It was one time Jake!" She laughs just as Jake sits beside her.
"Hey, I almost let him chase you earlier just to see you do it to him." Jake laughs.
"I'm sorry for ruining the trip."
"Baby its not your fault. Why didn't you tell me this is how your mom treats you? I would've suggested we go to my parents instead."
"You just seemed so excited to see everything out here that I was really hoping my mom would behave with a guest. Should've known you cant really stop how she really feels."
"But she still went too far." Jake interjects. "I don't think she's gone as far as to accuse you of lying about being in the navy."
"No! And its getting ridiculous!" Y/n stands. "I've done everything to please her! Everything! And the one thing I chose for me is the one thing she chose to pretend I never did!"
"I know..." Bradley tries to console her but she keeps going.
"I'm a fucking Naval Aviator! And a damn good one!" Y/n shouts. "I was valedictorian at the Academy! Top of the class at Top Gun! I've never had had a failed mission! But does she care? Noooooo." Y/n's voice is laced with sarcasm. "I fucking hate you!" She turns her frustrations to Jake.
"Me?"
"I am so fucking tired of mom favoring you! Ever since dad left! Oh Jake did this! And Jake did that!" Y/n groans. "I was a fucking state title holder for EVERYTHING! EVERY YEAR!
"Hey we can't control how mom talks about us." Jake defends.
"Oh don't start that shit with me again. We both know mom chose her favorite based off of when dad left. Thats when all these fucking comments started!" Y/n shouts. "Dad left her for MY fucking dance teacher and all the sudden I was a problem child."
"Y/n..."
"Why don't you just disappear already and go see Lottie? I'm sure you're just dying escape mom's love and attention to get your dick wet." Y/n groans, walking away from the two boys.
"Low blow y/c/s." Jake mutters as he walks back over to the horses. Y/n freezes in the middle of her pacing. She knew he was just trying to help and clearly she went far enough for Jake to call her by her call sign. Which he only ever did in the air or when she royally fucked up.
"Y/n..." Bradley mutters, standing from the edge. "Hey..." Suddenly, y/n picks up a rock and launches it off the cliff side, watching it drop into the lake below, screaming at the top of her lungs as she does. "Baby, come here." Bradley pulls her into a tight hug, his chest to her back as she breaks down. Her cries almost like screams as her knees give out, the only reason she's still standing is because of Bradley, just as much as their relationship had been.
Bradley met the twins his junior year at the academy, their first year, 16 years ago. Having been stationed with them multiple times, Bradley and Y/n grew quite close. In fact, 10 years ago when y/n was contemplating quitting the Navy, Bradley was the first person she called. And again 6 years ago. And when her lousy ex of 4 years left her 6 months after that, she called Bradley who swooped in and made her feel better, 6 months after that, they were official. 5 long years of Bradley keeping her grounded and Y/n keeping him out of his shell.
His hold was a comfort to her. Her head fell back to his shoulder as she cried.
"Shhh. I know baby. I'm right here." Bradley looses track of time, not sure how long they sat there, how long she cried, but its sunset by the time y/n has calmed down enough to even suggest heading back to the house.
"I didn't know you knew how to ride." Y/n comments, spotting the second horse beside her own.
"Ya know I think I look sexy up here." Bradley chuckles, mounting the horse.
"Oh very." Y/n laughs, climbing up onto her own. "Now I just wish I took you riding sooner." She pulls her horse around close enough to plant a kiss on Bradley's lips. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"Being there for me. Always being so supportive of me."
"Hey, you are one of the most badass people I know. It is very hard to not be supportive of you." Y/n chuckles, leading the way through the trees and back onto the pasture. Once they're both clear of the trees, Bradley lines up with y/n as they ride side by side, enjoying the beautiful view of the sunset over the ranch.
Y/n and Bradley enter the house after putting the horses in their stalls. Y/n's mother is in the kitchen, most likely cleaning up the dinner no one ate that night. Y/n walks ahead of Bradley and is the first into the loft, spotting Jake on the couch. She looks to Bradley giving him a nod. He fully understands and walks to her room, planting a goodnight kiss on her temple.
No words are exchanged between the twins but their actions say everything. Y/n lays on the couch, facing the TV the plays their favorite childhood movie, the one they always watched after Jake would pull her from the lookout as kids. Jake places one comforting hand on her shoulder, the other in her hair the sprawled across his lap. She chokes back her sobs. Jake motions tell her that he forgave her, that despite everything she said, she was still his sister and he wasn't going anywhere.
Bradley wakes the next morning to find Jake and Y/n on the couch together. He chuckles at the sight before making his way to the kitchen to get something to drink.
"Oh good morning!" Bradley turns to find Adeline cooking.
"Morning ma'am." Bradley replies cordially, not wanting to start anything with her at the moment.
"Hope your hungry! I'm making pancakes."
"Actually y/n and I have plans at a diner in town that she's been telling me about."
"Oh! Well then, I will just save this for another day then." Adeline says as she begins cleaning up.
"If you don't mind me asking, ma'am, why are you so hard on y/n?" Bradley questions, causing Adeline to pause in her actions.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Adeline answers before returning to the task at hand.
"With all due respect, I don't think you're seeing how fantastic your daughter really is." Bradley retorts, causing Adeline to turn around. "She is one of the best pilots I think the Navy has ever seen. Even my dad who is an Admiral could tell you he hasn't seen anyone as good as her since he was at Top Gun." Bradley tells her. "My uncles are 2 of the best pilots in naval aviation history and yet they'd tell you she's one of the best. She is so dedicated and loyal that she could be stressing over a mission and will still take the time to make sure her friends are okay." Bradley sighs. "I love your daughter ma'am, and I plan to marry her which I'm not gonna sit by while you treat her like shit." Bradley says firmly.
"Young man I don't know what she's told you..."
"You don't need to defend yourself. Everything I have said is based off of your actions in the last 24 hours."
"Morning." Y/n mutters walking through the kitchen to the coffee pot, turning it on.
"How'd you sleep?" Bradley asks, his eyes never leaving Adeline's in the stare off they are currently in.
"Just fine." She turns and notices both of their glares. "Everything alright?" She asks, the coffee maker long forgotten.
"Just fine." Adeline responds.
"All good here." Bradley responds, turning his attention to his girlfriend. "You ready to go to breakfast?"
"Yea, let me go get Jake's keys real quick. I'll meet you outside." She reaches up onto her toes to give Bradley a kiss as he leans down to meet her halfway.
"Holy shit! Y/n?"
"Cass?!" Y/n jumps out of the booth to hug her high school best friend tightly. "Oh my god its been too long!"
"How are you? How's that sexy aviator of a boyfriend you got?" Cass asks, holding y/n at arms length.
"Why don't you ask him yourself?" Bradley chuckles from behind y/n. "Bradley Bradshaw." He introduces, holding his hand out for her to shake. "Most people just call me Rooster."
"Cassandra Lane, but everyone just calls me Cass." Cass shakes his hand looking out at y/n while mouthing ‘he's really hot’.
Y/n chuckles, "I know." Y/n finally clears her throat, dragging everyone's attention back to her. "What are you doing here? Last I heard you moved to Corpus!" Y/n drags Cass back to their booth, making her sit next to them.
"I did but my boyfriend got reassigned so were road tripping our way out to California, decided to stop by home for the holidays."
"No way, what does he do?" Bradley asks.
"Forget that! What part of California?" Y/n questions.
"He's a mechanic for the Navy and I think North Island."
"No way!" Y/n shouts. "Cass! I'm currently stationed there! Working on getting a permanent assignment right now!"
"Oh my god! Seriously?"
"Hey Cass! We gotta go!" He boyfriend calls out.
"Shit! Hey our old group is meeting at our old stomping grounds. You guys should tag along! Even bring Jake with you if he's here! You two could show everyone a thing or two about line dancing, especially this one." Cass mutters the last part just barley loud enough that Bradley almost misses it.
"Hey I know a thing or two about line dancing." Bradley defends.
"Oh I didn't mean..."
"You know a thing or two or do you know Fake ID cause of Footloose?" Y/n questions raising a brow at him.
"I... I know Fake ID." He answers causing the two girls to laugh.
"Thats not the kind I'm talking about." Cass answers. "You know y/n and Jake were Country Swing champions 4 years in a row right?" Bradley nods while y/n shakes her head, eyes growing wide when she sees Bradley's answer. "They started getting requests so often that they're a staple at our old hangout, anytime they're both in town old Jimmy expects a show." Cass chuckles. "Oh please y/n! Please perform tonight! They got these new couples from the high school coming and they suck!"
"I'll talk to Jake but no promises." Cass nods before running off to join her boyfriend at the car.
"Country swing?" Bradley chuckles, cocking an eyebrow at her.
"My dance teacher suggested it when I started losing interest in every other form of dance. I danced for so long that by the time I reached high school I was ready to quit. I was already doing pageants, rodeos, and was starting the FFA, I didn't think I was gonna have time but she convinced me and I convinced Jake to be my partner." She laughs. "Of course I later found out that she wanted me to stay so her and my dad could keep hooking up in the back office." She sighed.
"Your dad isn't around? Like at all?" Bradley questions. Jake and y/n hardly brought up their dad. Y/n, cause of how her mom started treating her and Jake because the man he looked up to all his life abandoned them.
"No, he moved to New York our junior year. Missed everything since. So we stopped trying to include him and eventually he just disappeared from our lives." Y/n sighs as they finish eating. "We should probably head back." She stands up pulling her wallet from her purse.
"Oh no you don't!" Bradley jumps, trying to beat y/n to the register but she's smaller, therefore dodging the tables faster, dropping her credit card on the register.
"I win!" She sticks her tongue out at Bradley as he finally makes it to the register.
"You guys are so cute together." The waitress chuckles taking y/n's card. "How long have you been together?"
"5 years." Bradley chuckles. "6 in March."
"No ring yet?" She asks, looking down and y/n's bare ring finger.
"We get stationed separately so often we haven't really had a chance to think about it." Y/n sighs.
"Oh you're both in the military?"
"Navy." Bradley answers. "Naval aviators to be specific."
"Oh! Are you two the local kids that went to the Naval Academy?"
"No that was me and my brother." Y/n chuckles. "Forgot how big of a deal that was." She says as she fills out the receipt and putting her card back into her wallet.
"Well you two have a great rest of your day."
"Thanks, you too." Y/n smiles, walking out the door Bradley opens for her.
"I can't believe you agreed to this." Jake groans for the bar table.
"Technically I said I'd only do it if you agreed." Y/n defends, combing a finger through her loosely curled hair. "But you could never say no to old Jimmy." Y/n laughs, as Cass, Lottie, Cass's boyfriend and Jake's high school best friend Tyler walk up to them.
"Hey man! Where have you been hiding?" Jake greets. "Heard you’re a Naval plane mechanic now.”
"Oh you know, here and there." Tyler answers.
"So where you stationed at? May have to pull some strings to get you on my pit crew." Jake laughs, slapping a hand onto Tyler's shoulder.
Jake and Tyler disappear into their own conversation, pulling Bradley in too as the girls crowd into their own group.
"Look at all of us and our men!" Cass gushes. "Assuming this year is the year Jake's actually gonna make things official?" Cass wiggles her brows at Lottie making the other girls laugh.
"We've talked about it, but unfortunately until were married I couldn't go anywhere with him."
"If you guys have managed to still be in love with each other after 16 years and only seeing each other 2-3 times a year, I think you guys can handle long distance until you get married." Y/n laughs. "I've been doing it for 5 years. This year is the first time we've been stationed together for longer that a month."
"I don't know." Lottie sighs. "I want to make it official, but Jake is the one who shuts me down every time."
"Oh can y'all imagine? If Tyler get pulled on Jake's pit crew and with Y/n and Bradley being aviators too. We'd all be stationed together! Especially with y/n getting a permanent station request." Cass squeals in excitement.
"You forget that we still have deployments and missions. Its so hard to get us all together." Y/n sighs. "But it would be great to have my best friends around more." Y/n smiles at the girls in front of her.
"Alright folks you're in for a real surprise tonight." The bar's DJ announces as the music dies down. "If you've been a patron here since this place was teen only hangout you'll remember this dynamic duo! Back for one night only all the way from a Naval Air Station in California to show how to really do a country swing, welcome to the floor, everyone's favorite twins, Jake and Y/n!"
(Note: Their dance is linked up above. I tried to put it to words but I know very little about dance terminology)
Jake groans following y/n onto the clearing dance floor as Country Girl (shake it for me) by Luke Bryan starts making y/n laugh as she takes Jake's outstretch hand, the steps flowing through her. Bradley leans against the railing on the outside of the dance floor, following y/n's every move, lowering the straw hat from the previous day to try and mask how dark his eyes got watching her.
Y/n laughs as Jake twirls her to put his arms around her, lifting to rest her hip on his, dipping her to where her head almost touches the ground as she kicks her legs up into the air behind him to build the momentum to spin in his grip. Jake's right hand lands behind her back, his left wrapping around her legs to dip her ago before swinging her into a third dip, her feet still never touching the ground which impresses Bradley. Jake pulls her up, feet landing on the ground and immediately spinning her.
Bradley chuckles, the amount of times that he's picked her up spinning or spin her while they danced in the middle of the Hard Deck and she complained about being dizzy was clearly not a major issue with how much Jake was spinning her now.
Jake and y/n step their way around the floor, a continuous step ball change their choice of movement as Jake still spins his sister around every few steps. Jake twirls her a couple time when they reach the center of the floor again before his hands land on her waist. She jumps, Jake guiding her hips to the left, resting on his own as her legs kick to the side, repeating on the right before swinging her back. She straddles his waist on the next swing. The momentum allows Jake to lift her, her forearms resting on his shoulders to hold her up while Jake guides her body through the lift.
The crowd cheers as Y/n holds the position of a few seconds before dropping back down, straddling his waist again before Jake pushes her back, both feet landing on the ground, his hands catching hers as they immediately jump back into their steps, recovering from the trick. But its not long before it appears, to any untrained dance, that Jake flings his sister, causing her to slide to the ground, being spun in a circle while she sits on the ground, dropping her feet when she faces her brother. Bradley rests his left hand in hers, their right hands connecting. He pulls her up as she jumps from her feet. Jake turns, positioning himself with his right side to her, his left side no longer facing her, shifting in time for her legs to wrap around his waist has he keeps spinning. She leans back on his grip on her hands, as he spina a couple times pulling her back up and dropping he to the ground. Jack starts the shift from their usual moves, free styling a bit which causing y/n to laugh. As he lifts her, hooking her boot over his leg to where she almost straddles his thigh to dip her.
Pulling back up to stand, y/n takes the initiative the freestyle a little, even adding a split which was not included before. The crowds reactions to their tricks on urges them on further. Y/n briefly catches a glimpse of her 6 foot boyfriend who looks as if he might faint from her motions. Bradley's eyes never leave her body, wishing he had known about this side of her sooner. She chuckles at his dumbfounded smile before turning back to her brother who immediately lifts her up bridal style, right arm under her back, left under her knees. He throws her up slightly, allowing her to toss her right leg over his head to his left shoulder. He lifts her again as she twists in his arms. He catches her bridal style again, he legs on his left side now before he sets her down again in a spin.
They move through the rest of the routine with ease as the song comes to an end. They quickly make their way off the floor and are greeted by their friends, y/n smiles before moving over to Bradley, placing a hand on his shoulder causing him to jump. "Hey, you doing alright there?"she laughs.
"That, was so-o-o hot." Bradley stutters, making y/n laugh harder. "How come I never knew you could move like that? You've been holding out on me baby!" Bradley groans following her as she walks back to her table.
"Theres never a good time to pull out arial tricks in the middle of the Hard Deck."
"Well then maybe you can show me a few moves in private then? Give me a few private lessons?" Bradley purrs in her ear.
"One more dance and then we'll go. Fortunately for you, we always end the night with the only line dance you know." Y/n boops his nose, pulling away to the dance floor as Cass and Lottie run out to meet her from the DJ booth.
Fake ID starts playing and the girls move through the steps as if they've been doing it for years, which they have so it doesn't shock Bradley how swiftly she moves. Jake and Tyler join the girls for the chorus before everyone branches off dancing to the beat. Y/n struts over to Bradley and pulls him to the dance floor.
"Looks like Jake is gonna be busy tonight." Y/n smiles spotting Jake dancing closely with Lottie turning, his stetson placed delicately on her head. Y/n turns back around to face her boyfriend.
"What makes you say that?" Bradley questions, his hands resting on her waist as they dance.
"You heard of the cowboy hat rule?" Y/n laughs, her arms wrapping around his neck.
"No...?" Bradley questions.
Y/n smirks, plucking the old straw hat off of Bradley's head. "Were the hat, ride the cowboy." She laughs as Bradley's eyes darken with lust.
"Screw the dance. We're leaving right now." Bradley pulls y/n into a searing kiss before dragging her out of the bar.
"Alright everyone! Gather round! Get close!" Adeline shouts as the entire family squeezes together in front of the fireplace, Adeline's camera set up on a tripod, ready to take the millionth shot of their annual thanksgiving friends and family photo. Y/n is tucked under Bradley's side, holding close to him as everyone slides even closer. Jake and Lottie sit next to each other right in front of them, being pushed impossibly closer together too. "Alright everyone smiles! 3, 2, 1!" The flash momentarily blinds everyone before they disperse, moving to converse with different people.
"Twins!" Jake and Y/n both turn away from their conversation with Bradley and Lottie. Being the only set of twins in the family, they got so used to only being referred to as such. "Look at you two all grown up!"
"Hi nana." Y/n smiles as her grandmother pulls her into a hug.
"Oh my darling girl! Look how beautiful you are!" Nana gushes over the girl before turning to Jake. "Jacob! Oh my handsome grandson! You're so tall!" She plants a kiss on both of their cheeks.
"I missed you too, Nana." The twins had gotten so busy in high school at family functions just weren't plausible for them, and when they left for the Navy, it had been years since they had seen their grandmother.
"So? How long until my favorite grandchildren are gonna give me great grandkids?"
Y/n blushes as Bradley come up behind her, Lottie not far behind. "Nana, come on. You know we don't have time for kids."
"Well then who is this handsome young man?" Nana pushes y/n to the side, placing both hands on Bradley's cheeks, pulling him down to her short 4'11" height. "He's cute, sweetie. You two would make adorable babies."
"Nana!" Y/n slaps a hand over her face.
"Bradley, ma'am. You're grandkids talk a lot about you." He wasn't wrong. Y/n couldn't stop gushing over how amazing her grandma was and Jake never denied a chance to agree, as long as it was just between the three in the comfort of Jake and y/n's home.
"Oh well then you need to tell me everything about you! I’m assuming you’re my little angel's boyfriend?"
"Yea ma'am. Shall we?" He offers his arm to her, Nana swiftly linking her arm with his. Y/n goes to follow but her grandma stops her.
"Oh sweetheart why don't you go mingle with your cousins. I want a few minutes alone with your beau." Y/n stands shocked a Bradley shrugs leading her outside to the patio seating.
"You're in love with her?" Nana asks as they sit down.
"I'm sorry?"
Nana just smiles and removes her wedding ring, the band still remains on her hand. She reaches out for Bradley's hand and places the ring in his. "You'll still have to have to ask Jacob for her hand seeing as their father isn't around."
"Ma'am, I couldn't possibly..."
"I see the way she looks at you. She's never looked at anyone like that in her life. Bradley, I know when two people are in love. And you two? You two are more in love than anybody in that house." Nana tells him, closing his hand around the ring. "She's always told me if she was going to get any ring it would be mine. I trust you." She stands and walks back into the house leaving Bradley alone, staring down at the ring.
Minutes later Bradley is pulled from his thoughts by someone coming outside.
"Hey, Nana said you wanted to talk to me." Bradley nearly drops the ring at the sound of Jake's voice. "Is that...?"
"Your Nana is playing matchmaker." Bradley chuckles. "Just handed her ring to me."
"So you wanna...?" Jake stalls, waiting for Bradley to finish his sentence.
"I want your blessing to marry y/n." Bradley states bluntly. "I've been thinking about it for awhile but I could never find the right ring in all of the jewelry shops I went to. So I figured that if we were meant to get married the right ring would show up. And here it is. Her dream ring, in my hand. Just appeared out of nowhere."
"I don't think you should ask me-"
"Why not? Your father is a piece of shit who isn't around. Your mom treats her like the devil's spawn. Your grandma literally just told me to marry her." Bradley rambles, standing to meet Jake's eyes. "I know you don't like me all the much Jake. But I love your sister. I'm in love with her. And it wouldn't feel right marrying her with out the most important person in her life saying it was okay."
"She doesn't need my permission." Jake responds.
"But she'd want your blessing." Bradley responds calmly.
"You gotta promise me one thing, Rooster."
"Anything." Jake smirks at his response.
"You gotta name your first born after me."
"Oh fuck off, Hangman." Bradley shoves his shoulder as the boys laugh. "So is that a yes?"
"Yea man. You can marry my sister."

full name : giuliana mae clemonte. nicknames : gi , giu , lia , liana , gigi , jujubee , gbaby. age : twenty-one. date of birth : november 14 , 1998. place of birth : rome , italy. sun sign : scorpio. gender : cisgender female. pronouns : she / her / hers. passports : american , italian , chinese. languages : english , italian , chinese. education : st . stephen’s school in rome ( until age ten ) and cape coral international school. major : sociology ( currently pre-law ). clubs : equestrian team , honor society.
𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘
giuliana’s a daugher of china and italy , with roots tracing back to BLUE BLOOD on either side. her mother’s side traces back through generations of businesspeople and entrepreneurs , who built china’s economy. her father’s side traces back through generations of engineers and architects , who built many of the major cities of italy. her golden pedigree came with a certain amount of EXPECTATIONS , which her tiger parents were clear about with her from a young age. she was born in rome , and instantly sent off to the st . stephen’s boarding school when it came time for her to begin her schooling.
meanwhile , business began booming in the united states for both sides of the clemonte clan , who made the move over to portland , leaving behind their daughter to finish her studies. at age ten , giuliana finally reunited with her parents and was THRUST into a wildly different school system. the change was enough to make the girl’s head spin , all while instilling in her adaptability and a love for OBSERVING others’ facial expressions , mannerisms and their general attitude around others. it’s something she’s kept to this day.
though wealth has played a large part in her upbringing and the environment she’s grown up in , giuliana’s grown quite DISILLUSIONED of it. she’s seen the damage her parents and their businesses have left in their wake ( the collapse of the new residence building being one of them ! ) and doesn’t quite understand how they’re able to just throw money at the problem and walk away. as her secret suggests , she’s slowly but surely inching away from what her family has built , and hopes her career will be enough to sustain her once she spits out the silver spoon that was put in her mouth when she was born.

TRACK 01 ▶ PANG by CAROLINE POLACHEK.
there's a look in your eyes when you're hungry for me it's a beautiful knife cutting right where the fear should be
this one’s a direct reference to giuliana and axel’s relationship. though their modus operandi is being ON AND OFF , a relationship peppered by petty fights , tears and short-lived breaks , no part of giuliana is truly ready to let axel go. their mental connection , their shared interests , their morals and values , their sex life — it’s all too good for her to let go of. this particular song really gives a sense of how fiercely she feels for him , how deeply he’s engrained in her being.
TRACK 02 ▶ ORDINARY SUPERSTAR by RINA SAWAYAMA.
because i'm just an ordinary superstar so far but always hanging where you are
this one pertains to giuliana’s relationship with status , money and the lineage she was born into. though her last name opens doors , gets her a certain level of eduction and leads to a fair few people turning their heads or craning their necks , it’s something she still very much WRESTLES with. she’s obviously thankful for the immense privilege her wealth and background offer her on a regular basis ( hello ?! who wouldn’t ? ), but the scrutiny and the fabricated kindness and friendships that come from it are things she could very well do without.
TRACK 03 ▶ NAVY BLUE by CHARLOTTE LAWRENCE.
we got delusions of a grand oblivion we're only happy when we're higher than the sun
this one ties more into the stereotypical aspects of being tied to wealth. the partying , the smoking , the drinking , the drugs — the small things that make the lives of the children at cape coral a little smoother. giuliana’s not particularly attracted to drugs , loud music , velvet ropes and faded neon signs , but has been known to partake occasionally , when everything becomes a little too intense to deal with and her brain needs a short BREAK from overthinking and overanalyzing.
𝐢𝐢. 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬
like the true OBSERVER  she is , giuliana’s always been a social chameleon. her personality ebbs and flows based on the company she keeps , her eyes always careful to pick up on others’ emotions and body language. it’s how she’s been able to read past what her parents have told her over the years. in an environment where labels are quickly affixed , it’s what has kept her ahead of the curve and has allowed for her classmates , friends and anyone else in her orbit to be kept guessing.
this , in turn , has led to one label sticking ( on and off , truth be told ): the MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL. after all , who wouldn’t want to be , hang around or date the mysteriously quiet girl with the golden pedigree and platinum family tree ? the one who always seems to have the most eccentric fun fact to recount during classroom ice-breakers , the one whose holiday destinations rival all others’ , the one no one can seem to ever get an accurate read on. part of her loves to have fun with the attention and whispers that come with this label , but another ( truthfully , larger ) part is conflicted with what this means for her and what that makes her come across as.
ultimately though , if there’s anything anyone should know about giuliana clemonte , it’s that she’s a SEEKER and is driven by a need to know and understand the world and people around her. her actions , though not always meant to generate good , are always guided by her moral compass. she comes from a blue blood family and was given a silver spoon at a young age , but very much does not fit in the cookie cutter rich kid stereotype. she’s quick to point out the wasteful ways in which her family and those around her spend , and tries to keep her life as normal as she can ( though things like art , expensive wine , quality italian leather goods and lush fabrics are all things she’s thankful her lifestyle allows her to have ).
𝐢𝐢𝐢. 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫
SOME FUN FACTS !
though her name doesn’t make it all that obvious , giuliana is of CHINESE-ITALIAN descent ( the former on her mother’s side and the latter on her father’s side )
she’s a very fast reader , and absorbs an impressive amount of the information she reads — if you’ve watched suits , she’s like michael ross : everything she understands , she remembers forever
her luxury vices are italian leather shoes , earrings , art and good food ( cars ? private jets ? clothes ? expensive hair and makeup artists ? useless spends in her eyes )
she collects all of the letters she’s ever received and will spend evenings spreading them out on her bedroom floor and re-reading them quietly ( chocolate readily available or glass of wine in hand ) when she needs to re-center herself
she’s gotten many , many nicknames over the years ( gi , giu , lia , liana , gigi , jujubee , to cite a few ) but true friends know to call her gi
you can find a ( work in progress , because i’m a perfectionist about these ) pinterest board for giuliana HERE !
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒
give me STRONG FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS that are basically platonic soulmate relationships , with comfort and trust so strong that nothing could ever break them apart ( carla and lu , but without the murder and arguments ? )
give me a SQUAD with late night wine drinking , nights spent out on beaches skinny dipping and laughing until it hurts , large group hugs when things aren’t so good , promises to always have each others’ backs and inside jokes that no one else will ever understand.
give me an UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP with a boy she was convinced she hated , but now realizes she’s so similar too ( they’re both shitty , and it’s fine ! ) and will insult to cope.
give me ONE NIGHT STANDS and HOOKUPS she uses to attempt to get over axel , with heated kisses in stairwells and hallways and labored breaths in semi-public places.
give me ANGRY SCHOLARSHIP KIDS who can’t stand her connection to the collapse of a building and with whom she’ll clash , all while knowing that they’re right and that her family should pay the price of their actions.
give me someone gi SMOKES WITH on the roof of her home , to get away from it all. she has her head on their shoulder and smoke dancing out of her mouth , counting down the minutes until she feels light enough to start pouring her soul out.
give me CHILDHOOD FRIENDSHIPS with people who first saw baby gi , fresh out of italy , with a strong accent and doe-eyed confusion over schedules , classroom locations and the like. they’ve stuck by each other for years , and maybe knowing each other that well has been good or maybe it’s dangerous that they know so much.
give me ANYTHING YOU WANT ! i honestly love in-depth , thought-out plots and would love , love , love to brainstorm and think through things with all of you !

"Jake! Lets go!" Y/n shouts into her shared apartment with her brother.
"Why do I have to come with? Couldn't I just go ahead to mom's and you can meet me there, without the chicken?" Jake groans, trudging down the stairs.
"No because Carole invited you and you already agreed." Y/n sighs, her car keys jingle as she drops her hands to her sides. "And can you please play nice with Bradley this weekend? I really don't want to drag any of y'alls bs arguments to mama's next week."
"Explain to me why were not spending Christmas on the ranch?" Jake asks, grabbing his Stetson hat from its hook.
"Cause Bradley came with us to Mama's for thanksgiving. You're the one who agreed to coming to the Bradshaw's for Christmas before heading down south for new years." Y/n's southern accent lays out stronger as she straightens her own stetson. "If we don't leave now Carole is gonna be pissed that were late. You do not want to be on her bad side."
"Ahhhhh there she is!" Carole screams running out to meet y/n and Jake outside.
"Hi Carole." Y/n laughs as her boyfriend's mom hugs her tightly.
"Jake, I'm so glad you could join us."
"Thank you for inviting me, Mrs. Bradshaw." Jake smiles, tipping his hat.
"Please, call me Carole. Well come on in, I'm just finishing up dinner, the boys should be out back."
"Carole! You didn't have to cook all of this! You would've helped if you had called me."
"Nonsense! Besides Penny came to help." Carole says, leading them into the house. "Jake, would you like a beer?" Carole asks, pouring a glass of wine for y/n, as she always does when she comes over.
"Please, if you don't mind."
"Here you are Hangman." Penny says as she sets the bottle on the counter in front of him.
"Thanks Pen."
"Hey, theres my girl!" Y/n turns around to see Bradley walking inside, his father and uncle following behind him.
"Hey darling." Y/n kisses Bradley. "Did you have fun yesterday?"
Bradley had gone golfing with his father and Maverick, their yearly day before Christmas eve tradition when everyone was around.
"I did, I missed you though." Bradley chuckles, pulling y/n into a deeper kiss only being interrupted by Jake coughing loudly.
"Look I get it, everyone is in love and stuff but I'm alone here so can we dial it back just a smidge?"
"Hey Bagman, you really think we'd leave you hanging?" Bradley laughs at his own sentence which makes Jake groan.
"Yea, why don't you go see your early Christmas present thats in the living room." Y/n smiles as Jake side eyes everyone as he walks past them.
Walking into the thoroughly decorated living room, he spots a singular box neatly wrapped under the tree. Jake cocks a brow at his sister who nods her head quickly, insisting on him opening it. Pulling off the wrapping there is nothing but a singular paper placed in the bottom on the box.
"Turn around :)"
Jake reads the paper and speaks as he turns. Standing behind him is non other than Charlotte James.
"Lottie?"
"Hey there stud." She smiles as Jake pulls her into a hug, lifting her off the ground.
"What are you doing here?"
"You seriously expected us to subject you to a house full of couples for 3 days and not bring Lottie out here for you?" Y/n chuckles.
"Besides, why wouldn't I want to spend Christmas with my favorite aviator?" Lottie laughs out as Jake pulls her into a kiss.
"Hey!" Y/n protests. "You met me first!"
"I love you too y/n/n." Lottie smiles at y/n, her arms still wrapped around Jake's neck, his around her waist.
"Oh just kiss already!" Carole cheers.
Jake laughs as he pulls Lottie back, firmly kissing her and everyone cheers.
"Alright y'all! Dinner is ready!"
"My love." Bradley bows, pulling out y/n's chair. She giggles as she sits down, placing a kiss on his cheek.
"So Lieutenant Seresin how was your test flight this morning?" Goose asks, looking towards Jake you was sat on the opposite side of Carole's seat.
"It went really well, Vice Admiral Bradshaw. I think were gonna hit our goal earlier than expected." Jake answers as Carole and Penny place the different dishes on the table.
"Hey, no work talk! This is a family holiday!" Carole states before turn around to grab the last of the food.
"I'm sorry honey." Goose apologizes. "So Y/n, how was the trip to Texas?"
"It was okay Mr. Bradshaw. Just the usual family holiday drama, but I think we still managed to have a good time. Right boys?" Bradley shakes his head in agreement but Jake stays quiet. "Jake?" Y/n looks across to her twin brother to see him staring at Lottie, who was having a conversation with Maverick. "Jacob!"
"Will you be my girlfriend?!"
Everyone freezes where they're at, Lottie slowly turning around, wide eyed at Jake.
"What?"
"I'm sorry but I couldn't hold it back anymore. I'm in love with you Lottie and I'm sorry it took me so long to say anything but I want to be with you. I don't want to keep having week long flings for the rest of our lives. So Charlotte Amelia James, will you officially be my girlfriend?"
"Yes!" Lottie shouts without any thinking. "Yes, yes yes!"
"Oh this is exciting!" Carole cheers sitting down at the table. "Goose and I are celebrating 40 years! Mav and Penny are getting married in a few months! Jake and Lottie are clearly overdue but finally together! And Bradley and y/n are still so madly in love!" She rattles off as Goose cuts the turkey. "Oh what could make this Christmas any better?!" She cheers.
"Well..." Bradley mumbles.
"Did you say something dear?"
"What? Oh nothing Mom, just clearing my throat."
"Okay," she holds a questioning look before turning to everyone else. "Lets eat!"
"Your mom's cooking is the best." Y/n sighs walking along the beach in Goose and Carole's backyard.
"Yea, its always the best part of being home." Bradley sighs, leading her along their walk.
"Darling?" Y/n pulls him to a stop, turning him to look at her. "Is everything alright?"
"Yea, I'm sorry baby, I'm just feeling a little exhausted." Bradley covers. In reality, he's just super anxious. He has everything planned out perfectly.
Carole's Christmas tradition is that stockings are the last opened in order of oldest to youngest. Perfect for Bradley, by a 5 minute difference, y/n was the youngest of everyone present since Penny's daughter Amelia ended up going to her dad's for the holidays. Buried at the bottom of y/n's stocking was a small velvet ring box, nestled inside is her grandmother's ring.
But Bradley was nervous about popping the question in front of everyone. He loves his family, and he loves her but what he wasn't sure about was if this is what she wanted too.
"Why don't we go back to the house and go to bed? From your descriptions of Christmas day, were going to need our rest." She laughs, pulling Bradley back towards the house.
"Yea... yea lets do that." He stumbles over he words, mindlessly following his girlfriend through the cool night.
"Good morning everyone!" Carole's excitement radiates through the living room where everyone sits, sleepily waiting for her. Y/n leans against the couch sitting on the floor with Bradley sitting right behind her on the couch, a cup of coffee rested in both if their hands. Jake and Lottie are cuddling on the couch next to Bradley. Pete and Penny are seated on the loveseat and Goose is perched in his recliner near the Christmas tree that is now surrounded with presents. "Merry Christmas." She kisses Goose and sits on the arm of his recliner.
"Merry Christmas, honey."
"Bradley, Jake, why don't you two hand out the presents?" Carole suggests.
"Sure mom." Bradley smiles, pressing a kiss to y/n's temple as he sets his coffee down, stepping over her to make his way to the tree.
It takes about 10 minutes for Bradley and Jake to distribute all the gifts accumulated by the 8 of them and by the looks of it, Carole went a little overboard with Jake, Lottie, Y/n and Bradley's gifts, their stacks being taller than anyone else. Y/n slides down to sit in the middle of the floor with Bradley, leaving Jake and Lottie with the couch.
"Alright kids, go for it." Carole claps as they all reach for their first gift, one at a tine reading who its from.
"Okay mine is from Penny!" Y/n smiles pulling the wrapping off to show off the y/n's favorite liquor resting inside the box. "Penny! Where did you get this?"
"I put in a special order just for you, I even have a few bottles on hand at the Hard Deck now." Penny smiles
"I love you so much right now!" Y/n sets the bottle to the side and starts tackling the mound of presents all from Carole.
"Alright. This one's from Mav." Bradley says, tearing the wrapping off he pulls out a pair of ray-ban aviator glasses the same time Y/n and Jake pull out theirs.
"No way, Mav, this is too much." Jake protests.
"Yea, Mav we can't accept these." Y/n pipes in.
"Yes you can!" Pete retorts. "Its actually from Goose, Ice, and Me. We got tired of watching y'all bust your cheep ones every other day."
"Thanks guys, I appreciate it." Bradley nods, setting them back in the box. Y/n and Jake mutter their thank you's, setting them to the side.
Lottie had opened a few gifts that y/n had helped Carole pick out. She even had a few from y/n and Bradley mixed in.
"Okay, Jake why don't you open that one." Y/n smiles. "And B that one right there is from me."
Jake opens his to find a personalized belt buckle with his call sign on it. "Holy shit y/n! How'd you know I was looking at something like this?"
"Coyote showed me. I had been freaking out trying to find you gift he decided to help me out." Y/n turns back to Bradley who opened his. Inside was a brand new watch.
"Baby..."
"Try it on! You had been complaining that yours was bugging out so I took the liberty of getting you a new one." Bradley places the clearly expensive watch on his wrist and smiles at y/n.
"I love you." He pulls y/n into kiss.
"I love you too but thats not your only surprise. Last one requires the bedroom." She whispers in his ear before pulling back to see his wide eyes.
Slowly all the presents dwindled down and Carole stood handing out the stockings.
"Alright Pete, you first."
"Wait Mav's actually the oldest here?" Jake laughs out.
"Thanks Carole." Pete grins ignoring the remarks from the younger pilots in the room.
"I guess old man was the perfect nickname." Y/n busts out laughing.
"Hey! Theres only like 16 days between me and Goose alright?" All of them laugh as he digs through the stocking, thanking Carole at the end as she hands Goose his. Stockings were always a practical gift that Carole did for everyone. Basic necessities that they would need on base or on deployments, plus a few treats so they always moved pretty quickly.
Bradley's hands were shacking as he flicked through his stocking. There were 2 people left before he would be on one knee in front of y/n, her brother, her best friend and his whole family.
"Bradley, dear are you okay?"
Shit, he thinks, mom's noticed now.
"Yea mom, I'm okay."
"You sure, darling? You want some water?" Y/n scoots over to sit directly next to him, rubbing his back.
"I'm okay, baby. Really." He musters a small smile which only slightly puts her mind at ease.
Lottie and Jake both opened theirs and it was finally time for y/n to open her's.
Bradley takes a deep breath when he sees her reach the bottom of the stocking.
"What is... Carole?" Carole just shrugs as y/n opens the small box when suddenly Bradley stands up, making her pause at the sudden movement. "Bradley?" She questions as he puts his hand out, she takes it and he pulls her up to stand.
"Y/n, baby, I love you."
"I love you too." She smiles as he takes the box from her.
"For the last year, I have gone in and out if every jewelry store in ever area I was stationed. Nothing ever seemed perfect enough to go to this perfect girl standing before me. I've been in love with you since that first day I saw you put Hangman in his place, all those years ago at the Academy and I fall more in love with you every single day." Bradley rambles out. "You are the perfect girl and you deserve the perfect ring. And when we were in Texas, the perfect ring was literally just handed to me." He pops open the box, getting down on one knee, y/n gasps at the sight of her grandmother's ring. "5 years 9 months and 8 days we've been together and I don't want that clock to stop ticking. I want to love you forever. So, y/n m/n "y/c/s" Seresin, will you marry me?"
Y/n glances over at everyone in the room. Her eyes resting on her brother, who, with tears in his eyes, nodded, giving his approval to his sister. She smiles, turning back to Bradley. "Yes. God, a million times yes!" Bradley slips the ring on her finger, standing and pulling her into a deep kiss as everyone cheers.
"I love you future Mrs. Bradshaw." He mumbles into the kiss.
"I love you Mr. Bradshaw."
Y/n paced back and forth in the small room. The last 11 months had led her to this one day. Her wedding day. The day she became Mrs. Y/n Seresin-Bradshaw. But as of right now, the pre-wedding jitters were really getting to her.
"Y/n, come on. You gotta take a deep breath." Cass says from the couch y/n's bridesmaids sat at. Cass, Lottie, Phoenix, and Amelia are all seated watching y/n's movements.
"She's gonna wear a hole in the floor." Amelia mutters.
"Lottie, where's Jake?" Cass asks.
"I don't know, I haven't see any of the boys."
"None of them?!" Y/n stops in her tracks. "You haven't see any of the boys?"
"I'm sure they're here. In fact, Amelia and I are going to make sure." Lottie comforts before dragging Amelia out of the room.
"Oh god! What if he got cold feet? What if he changed his mind?" Y/n starts pacing again. "What if he decided I wasn't what he wanted anymore?"
"Oh knock it off y/n. Rooster loves you! He's not going to leave you at the alter." Phoenix says.
"But..."
"No, no more. You need to calm down of you are going to send your self into a panic attack." Cass forces y/n to sit in a chair.
"Hey, y'all ready?" Jake questions walking in. "We gotta... holy shit." He pauses at the sight of his sister. Her white dress flowing perfectly, hair curled into the perfect half up half down hairstyle, her veil pinned delicately into her hair. "Wow sis, you look... you look amazing." He chokes out.
"Oh Jake, please don't cry. You're gonna make me cry." Y/n smiles, walking over to her brother.
"I'm sorry. I just... I can't believe you're about to get married." Jake wipes his eyes.
"He is here, right? I'm not about to walk out to a shit show."
"Oh he's out there and I'm gonna make sure someone gets Rooster crying like a baby when he sees you." Jake days making y/n laugh. "There's that smile."
"Thank you, Jake. For everything."
"Yea yea. Come on, lets get you married."
The instrumental version of "Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts echos around the open area as one by one the the wedding party walks in. Because there were no young kids in their family, they had to settle for their friends being everything. Payback and Fanboy took seriously to being ring security, Amelia the flower girl. Tyler and Lottie walk together first. Followed by Nat and Coyote. Last were the Maid of Honor and Best Man, Cass and Bob. Finally with a swell in the music Y/n appeared in Bradley's eyesight, crying at the sight of the love of his life.
Her dress flowed perfectly around her, leaving plenty to Bradley's imagination. He spots Jake's smug grin, knowing he had a bet over him crying. After what felt like an eternity to them, Jake and y/n finally reach the end of the aisle.
"Take care of her, or I'll be your worst nightmare." Jake threatens, still smiling.
"I will, man. Thank you." Bradley slaps his shoulder before turning to y/n, their hands interlocked as the officiant, who just so happened to be Maverick, speaks.
If you had asked either one what was being said, they wouldn't be able to answer. Too lost in each others eyes, only straying from each other's gaze at the sound of laughter.
"Bradley, your vows?"
"Oh right." He stumbles a but searching his pockets. "I uhh... okay, I guess I'm gonna wing it." He whispers, causing y/n to laugh. "Y/n, y/c/s, I love you. You never cease to amaze me on a daily and make me fall more in love with you everyday. You are incredible, creative, loving, fun, and one of a kind. You are probably one of the best pilots I have ever met, no offense to everyone in this room." Everyone laughs, 25% of the room being Naval Aviators as well. "You are everything I could have ever wanted in a friend, a girlfriend, and now a wife. You are everything to me and always will be."
Y/n takes a deep breath. "Bradley, darling, my Rooster. You are something else." Everyone laughs as he lets out an exasperated sigh. "You stress me out when your in the air, when he make snarky comments at my brother, and even you stand up to superior officers. But I wouldn't trade you for anything or anyone in the world. You've taught me how to be peaceful amidst my chaotic life. You've been a dream as a friend and boyfriend and I cannot wait to see what more you could possibly do for me as a husband."
"May we have the rings?" Payback brings the bands up to them and both take the opposites band. Repeating what Pete recites, they each place the band on their ring fingers.
"By the power vested in me, by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Bradley, you may now kiss the bride."
"Don't have to tell me twice." Bradley pulls y/n close by her hips and turns her into a dip, planting a firm kiss to her lips.
"I love you, Mr. Bradshaw." She mumbles into the kiss.
"I love you, Mrs. Seresin-Bradshaw." He pulls her back up, planting another kiss. "Even if you did hyphenate your name." Y/n laughs at Bradley's comeback.
"If everyone could please direct their attention to the dance floor, it is now time for the newlyweds first dance."
"Speechless" by Dan & Shay begins playing through the speakers. Y/n had slowly gotten into Bradley into country music and he had even insisted on this song for their first dance, claiming it as one of their songs. They danced together like there was no one in the room, loving every moment. When the song ended, they made their way to the head table sitting in the middle of their wedding party.
"Can I have everyone's attention please." Bradley says, standing with a microphone. "On behalf of y/n and myself, I'd like to thank everyone for joining us today. It means the world to us that so many people care about us and were able to join us in celebrating this special day. Each and every person in this room has played a special part in our relationship, whether is was as a supportive friend, parents who convinced one, mainly me, to go after the other, or banned us from dating which only drove us together." Bradley says, looking directly at Jake. "We love each and everyone if you and are so thankful you are here today."
Dinner was served shortly after and soon began the wedding party speeches.
"Hey everyone, I'm Cass, y/n's childhood best friend. I remember the day she called me about Bradley. It was her freshman year at the Academy and her words were, and I quote, 'there is this really hot junior who is like the best at everything!' She gushed about him every time we talked and you could tell from day one she was in love." Y/n's face was flushed red as she hit her face. "Well Y/n, I told you then and I 'll tell you now, he really really, likes you back. To the happy couple." She cheers as every claps.
Bob is the next up, being the best man and all. "Hey everyone, I'm Bob. I met y/n and rooster during a detachment a year and a half ago. You could tell every time they looked at each other that they were in love. Just the way their eyes brightened whenever the other walked into a room. I didn't have the please of seeing their relationship grew from the beginning but I'm glad I get to see them through the beginning of their marriage and whatever comes next for them. To Bradley and y/n."
"Alright, time for best speech everyone, so kick back, relax, and be prepared with tissues." Jake says, taking the microphone from Bob. "I am the older and better looking twin, Jake. I remember growing up y/n always talked about finding her prince charming, he'd be tall, handsome, treat her right, and love her unconditionally. I told her she was delusional, that no guy could be all 4. Well y/n, you did it, you found your prince charming and I am so happy for you." Y/n smiles, tears welling up in her eyes. "Rooster, you are many things, and I could go on and list them, but right now the only thing that matters is that you're the one for my sister and I couldn't ask for anyone better to be with my sister." He toasts to them before making his way to his table, stopping to plant a kiss on his sister's temple. "Love ya sis."
"I love you too." She smiles as a few tears escape, holding her brother in a hug.
"Alright, time for the parents dances, starting with the bride. Joining her in the dance floor will be her brother."
"Brother" by Kodaline plays as Jake leads y/n to the dance floor.
"Thank you, Jakes."
"For what?" He asks, twirling her.
"Everything." She smiles. "Being there when Dad wasn't."
"Hey, I'm always going to be there for you." Jake holds his sister close, in a hug as the song ends.
Bradley leads his mother to the dance floor. "You'll be in my Heart" from Tarzan plays as they dance. Y/n looks on from the table, smiling at the sweet moment between mother and son. She could tell Carole was singing to words to Bradley, just as she did when he was growing up.
Moments after the end if their song, y/n finds herself sat in a chair in the middle of the room. "Danger zone" booming through the speakers and Bradley comes strolling up with his aviators and his green flight suit on, all of his groomsmen and friends standing behind him, aviators on too.
Y/n laughs as Bradley tries to mimic a flight pattern, dropping to his knees in front of his wife. He smiles, pulling his aviators off to hang on the collar of his under shirt before running his hands down y/n's legs over over her dress until he reaches the hem.
He reaches under the skirt, resting his on her ankles, sliding up her legs, she he reaches her knees, he lifts the skirt over his head. His hands slide further up her legs, resting at the tip of her thighs. He plants small open moth kisses on her legs, leading to the garter. He smiles at the delicate lace, pinching the fabric between his teeth. He pulls the grater down her leg and over her foot, all of the men gathered behind Bradley cheering as he re surfaces from her dress. He stands, pulling the small fabric from his mouth, he plants kiss before turning back to his friends, launching the garter into the hair. The boys push each other around until finally someone gets a hold of it. Jake stands from the crowd, garter in hand, smiling. He looks over at Lotte who stands with y/n's bouquet in her hands, having caught it just before the garter toss. Bradley and y/n laugh as Jake's face pales, trying to shive the garter into someone else's hand.
3 years later
y/n sits on the porch swing. She gazes out on the front yard watching 2 year old Nicolas Bradley chase his nearly 1 year old twin siblings Jacob Dean and Carole Marie. She laughs as the twins scream, laughing at their older brother.
Bradley and Jake got sent out for deployment 6 months ago with no guarantee of when they will be home. So while the boys got to bod being bunked together on a boat, Lottie had taken up residence in Y/n and Bradley's guest bedroom to help y/n with the twins. Y/n pulling back from flights was overlooked for the deployment, thankfully. She stepped into an instructor role at Top Gun a month before they decided to start trying for Nick, allowing her to be home more with the kids.
"Y/n! Pizza should be here any minute!" Lottie calls through the open door.
"Alright kids! Time to come inside!" Y/n calls out, standing from the swing.
"But mama!"
"No buts! Time to get cleaned up for dinner before daddy and uncle Jake call us." That perks up Nick's attention. Nick sprints up to the door. This deployment was harder on their eldest son, who had just turned 2 right before they left, the twins only 5 months at the time. "Jace! Carrie! Come on loves!" They crawl their way up the steps of the porch, standing and slowing walking into the house. They took their first steps just over a month ago and have started babbling sentences since the deployment.
Y/n softly smiles every time the twins experience a first, making sure to record every moment and emailing them to Bradley. He's always so excited when he talks to the kids, trying to get the twins to show off their new skills live. He never says it but she can tell it pains him to miss these moments.
Hours pass and theres no word from Bradley or Jake. Its not long before its 45 minutes past the kids bed times and Nick's begging to stay up longer, hoping for the call.
"I'm sorry loves. How about I call Grandpa Goose in the morning and see if you guys can have another sleepover?" Nick perks up at the thought, sprinting to his room. Lottie and Y/n lift the sleepy twins, carrying them to their shared room. Y/n walks across the hall first, tucking Nick into bed. "Good night." She kisses his forehead head as he mumbles in his sleep.
"I'm sorry they didn't call." Lottie says, both closing the children's doors at the same time.
"Probably just didn't get service in time." Y/n brushes her anxiety off. Bradley never missed a chance to call. And the one time he does? The thoughts don't settle well in her.
True to her word, she called Goose and Carole asking them to watch a kids for the weekend, which they gladly accepted, always loving a chance to be with their grandkids.
Y/n paced the living room after the kids left. Still not a word from Bradley, or Jake. Even Goose hadn't heard from his son or Mav.
"Y/n you're going to pace a hole into the floor."
"What if something's wrong? What if something happened? If Admiral cant get answers, it can't be a good thing." Y/n says.
"I'm sure everything is fine. Can you sit down please?" Y/n sighs, sitting in the armchair to the left of the couch, Bradley's chair. Lottie tries to distract her with a movie but y/n just stares at the door, her phone clutched in her hand, and the pillow from the chair being hugged by her. It feels as if hours have passed but it's only been minutes for y/n. Her mind races over every possibility. She had been feeling off since yesterday, like her sixth sense had just been going off and she didn't like it.
Her thoughts are cut off by the doorbell ringing and she freezes, making no movement to go answer the door as Lottie pauses the movie walking over to answer the door.
"Good afternoon Miss James." Y/n hears the familiar voices but their tones keep her from running over.
"Is Lieutenant Commander Seresin-Bradshaw home?" The other voice asks, neither being the voice of her husband or brother.
"Y/n," Lottie mutters out, stepping away from the door. Y/n slowly rises, walking towards the door.
"Please confirm your identity." Mav states, following standard protocol when y/n, opens the door fully. Maverick and Phoenix stand in her doorway in their service dress uniforms.
"Lieutenant Commander Y/n Seresin-Bradshaw."
"Lieutenant Commander, this is Lieutenant Trace, and I am Captain Mitchell-"
"I know who you are, Captain." She interrupts, remaining respectful despite the circumstances. "Just say it."
"On behalf of Fleet Commander Admiral Beau Simpson and the department of the Navy, we regret to inform you that Lieutenant Commander Jacob Seresin was killed in action on the first of October 2024. The Navy extends their deepest condolences to you and your family."
Y/n doesn't move, staring blankly at Mav. She can hear Lottie's gasps at the news, knowing that her best friend is breaking down behind her but y/n couldn't move. Her brother, her twin brother, her best friend above Lottie, was gone. But she can't focus on it for long.
"And... and Brad-"
"I'm right here, baby." Bradley comes barreling through, not able to stand back anymore. He pulls y/n into a hug as she finally lets all of her emotions out. Her cries fall through like screams just as they had 4 years ago on the look out. The couple drops to the ground as y/n's knee's give out, Bradley's own injuries making it difficult to hold her up but his embrace never loosens as she cries. "It's okay baby. I'm right here. Let it all out."
They didn't move for at least 30 minutes as y/n cried. Phoenix had come in and was comforting Lottie.
Lottie. Y/n had completely spaced on her best friend. Her brother's girlfriend who was definitely hurting just as much as she was. She quickly got up, walking over to over to the couch where Phoenix had placed Lottie. Bradley had given a curious look at y/n's suddenly calm demeanor moving to sit in his chair.
"Lottie." Y/n mumbles as she sits on the coffee table in front of her. Lottie had long since stopped crying, just staring blankly at her hands in her lap.
"He's gone," is all she says. "He's really gone."
"I know."
"You know we talked about getting married. Right before he left." Y/n's eyes drop. She did know, she had the ring hidden in her desk drawer upstairs. "He said when he came home, the first thing he was doing was proposing. And now," she sniffs, the tears slowly coming back. "Now we'll never get that."
"B, what happened?" Y/n looks over at her husband. He refuses to meet her gaze. How do you tell your wife, that her brother is dead, giving up his future with the love of his life, because he was saving her husband's life?
"He uh-" Bradley feels like his head is going to explode. His entire body hurts, his injuries are aching and his head is pounding. "We were in the middle of a dog fight. I hadn't seen the incoming missile and he came from above and-" he pauses, every feeling he had been avoiding come bubbling up. "He saved my life using the last round of flares he had. He barely the second missile coming his way." Bradley get quiet the more he talks, tears welling in his eyes.
Phoenix notices and takes over. "He ejected just in time but he hit his head on the canopy."
Y/n gasps looking over at her husband. She heard the stories about Goose's accident and couldn't believe Bradley was holding up so well before, knowing that they lost Jake the way they almost lost his father 40 years ago.
"Darling..."
"Its all my fault." Bradley cracks, everything hitting him all at one.
"No, darling, its not your fault." Y/n moves over to her husband, her hands resting on either side of his face, forcing him to look at her. "You did everything you were supposed to do, so did Jake. Hell," she laughs slightly shocking everyone in the room. "For the second time in his life, Hangman didn't leave his wingman hanging." She starts laughing, dropping to her knees before Bradley. Lottie starts giggling at the thought from her seat.
"Asshole." Lottie lets out, laughing harder.
Mav had finally come inside, Bradley and Jake's bags in hand. His eyes widen at the two girls laughing uncontrollably. He shoots Phoenix a questioning look and she just shrugs, just as confused and she witnessed everything.
"Such an asshole," y/n laughs, holding onto Bradley's knees as she doubles over laughing.
"Mama! Mama! Guess wh—" y/n looks up at Bradley at the sound of her sons voice. "Daddy!"
"Hey buddy!" Bradley stands up, meeting his son halfway, lifting him with groan at the pain in his side. "Where's your brother and sister?"
"Right here." Carole chuckled, little Jacob in her arms, Goose close behind with Carrie.
"Hi mom, dad!" Bradley smiles taking Carrie from his father, giving him a big hug.
"Woah, where's this coming from?" Goose questions, hugging his only child.
"Just glad to see you, Dad." Bradley smiles softly pulling back, his attention immediately going to his daughter, making her giggle.
Carole sets Jace down who immediately runs to his mother, being the perfect little mama's boy that both of her sons became.
"Where's Uncle Jake?" Nick asks. Everyones eyes soften at his innocence. Bradley walks over kneeling down by y/n, Carrie sat in his lap, Jace joining her.
"Sweetheart, you know how we said that sometimes, when people go out to be heroes, well, sometimes things don't go as planned and we lose people we love?" Y/n asks her son. They've had the talk about people dying. The first time was when a few of y/n's friends didn't come back from her last mission. Friends that were big in Nick's life, just like Jake was.
The 2 and a half year old nods, most likely not entirely understanding what she was explaining to him. Y/n struggles to continue, wishing she wasn't having to explain this to him.
"Well buddy, your Uncle Jake was a hero. Probably the bravest your mommy and I have ever seen."
"You're a hero too daddy!" Nick laughs.
"Yea, but nothing like your uncle." Bradley chuckles softly. "Nick, your uncle saved my life, so I could come home."
"But he's coming home too right? He always comes back with you."
"Not this time buddy. No this time he's not coming home."
"Oh." Nick answers. Everyone knew he didn't quite understand, he probably wouldn't for a few years.
The day's leading up to the funeral were hell for the Bradshaw household. Cyclone had made sure to give everyone 2 weeks of leave, a week before and a week after the funeral. Y/n struggled with keeping from working, it being the only thing that kept her from crying every five minutes. The pit in her stomach hadn't gone away since the day she found out and she needed the distraction, locking herself away in her home office all day, working on all the flight patterns the other instructors would need. It kept her busy but it worried Bradley.
He could hear her frustrated sighs each day from behind her locked door. Her quiet cries from the bathroom that weren't so quiet against the stream of water from the shower. Bradley knew it was different type if loss between them. He lost a friend, a coworker, a wingman. She lost her twin, the person she would always have the closest connection with no matter how much she hated it.
Bradley's thoughts are dragged from his wife to the ring of the doorbell. Cursing under his breath because of his napping children he makes his way to the door seeing the last person he expected at his door.

"Where are my grandbabies?"
"What are you doing here, Adeline? How'd you figure out where we live?" Bradley questions, blocking the doorway.
"The officer who picked me up from the airport brought me here. I'm staying with my grandchildren for the rest if the week."
"No, you're not. They don't even know who you are." Bradley tells her.
"And who's fault is that? Probably my good for nothing daughter's. Probably why my son is-"
"Don't you dare finish that sentence. You can wait out here, I'll call you a cab to take you to the furthest hotel from this house." Bradley tells her through clenched teeth.
"I want to see my daughter." Adeline demands.
"She doesn't want to see you." Bradley shuts the door immediately calling a cab.
"Who was that?" Y/n asks.
"Wrong house." Bradley answers, not turning towards her. "They were intended to go a few doors over."
"Okay." Y/n sighs, grabbing her jacket from by the door.
"Where you off to?" Bradley questions.
"Just gonna go grab a few things for uh... dinner tonight." She zips up her jacket, leaning over the kitchen counter, where Bradley is. He kisses her, turning to face her.
"I can see your khakis. You're going to base."
"No I'm not."
"Baby, you're working yourself to the brink, you need to take a break, actually grieve." Bradley moves around the counter, holding y/n's arm so she can't walk away.
"I'm fine, Bradley." Y/n pulls away from him, opening the door.
"Y/n..."
"Mom?" Bradley glances around her to see Adeline still by their door.
"Oh baby!" Adeline tries to throw herself at y/n but y/n has her hands out to stop her.
"What are you doing here? How did you even find me?"
"I'm here for Jacob's funeral. And to see you, and my grandbabies." Y/n just laughs at her comment. "I don't see what's so funny."
"You seriously think that after how you treated me my whole life that I'd let you anywhere near my children?" Y/n questions.
"Because I'm your mother." Adeline answers.
Y/n goes to retaliate but is interrupted by Nick running into the room from the hallway. "Mommy! Daddy!"
Y/n snaps around. She recognizes his tone. His worried tone.
"What is it buddy?" Bradley asks.
"It's Jace!" Nick says loudly. Y/n takes off sprinting to the playroom, Bradley pulling Nick out of her path before following behind, Nick hot on his heels.
Y/n drops to the ground at Jace who laid on his back, crying while taking shallow breaths. "Jace! Come on baby!" She pulls the boy up to sit. You gotta take deep breaths.
"What happened Nick?" Bradley asks his oldest as Carrie runs over to him, crying.
"We were playing and he fell backwards and started making that noise. Mommy said that noise not good when Alex did it." Nick explains. Alex was Nick's friend, another navy kid that y/n occasionally babysat over the last six months.
Y/n loudly lets out a sigh of relief when Jace finally calms down.
"You did a good job getting us buddy." Bradley looks at his son proudly, glad he actually listens to them unlike Bradley at that age.
"You okay, sweetie?" Y/n asks after Jace takes a couple deep breaths. The boy just nods, wrapping his arms around his mothers neck, holding on tight. "It's okay love." She sighs, running a hand over his back as she stands, lifting him into her arms.
"Oh look at you cuties." Y/n turns quickly holding Jace protectively. Bradley pulls Carrie and Nick close, lifting them as he stands, walking away from Adeline.
"Get out." Bradley warns.
"Oh come on! I traveled all this way, let them give grammie some love."
"Get out of my house before I call the authorities. I don't think you want to get arrested for trespassing right before the funeral." Y/n stands in front of Bradley, holding tightly to Jace.
"Fine, but they're going to have to get to know me soon enough. Especially if you want the ranch to stay in the family." Adeline turns, leaving Y/n and Bradley alone with the kids.
"Is he okay?" Bradley questions.
"Just got the wind knocked out of him." Y/n sighs. "How did she even find us? I didn't even tell her I had kids." Y/n questions, softly rocking Jace who was still worked up.
"You dont think Jake would've said anything do you?"
"No. No, it was his idea to not tell her in the first place." Y/n sighs. "We shouldn't bring them tomorrow." Y/n decides.
"We got no one to watch them, baby. Trust me, if there was someone who could watch them, I'd agree." Bradley sets Nick and Carrie down, they immediately return to playing. He walks over to y/n and guides her out of the playroom, half asleep Jace still rested in her arms.
"I dont want her anywhere near them, Bradley. She'll just do exactly what she did to me." Y/n eyes start welling with tears at the thought of what her mother was capable of.
"She won't go anywhere near them." He sits beside her on the couch. "We have the advantage here, we know every single person who will be there and they know that your mother is not allowed near these kids. Everything is going to be okay."
Y/n simply nods, watching her youngest son sleep in her arms. She sighs, knowing that what Bradley said was true. Their friends and family were very protective of their kids so she knew no one would ever get their hands on them.
"You ready?" Bradley stand in the doorway of their bedroom. His dress blues freshly pressed and neat.
Y/n stands on the opposite side of the room, her own dress blues on. She runs her hands over the fabric, feeling constrained by the semi fitted uniform. "Yea, kids ready?"
"Downstairs waiting for you with Mom and Dad." Bradley makes his way over to her, his hands rest on her arms to stop their movements. "You sure you're okay?"
"As okay as someone who's about to bury their brother." She musters a small smile before turning around. "Lets get this over with, please." Bradley nods, taking her hand and leading her through the house. Downstairs, Goose and Carole wait with Jace and Carrie in their arms, Nick close by until he spots his parents.
"Mommy, look! Daddy helped me do my tie!" Nick runs over excited as they come down the stairs.
"It looks so good baby!" She smiles picking up the boy. "Lets get you and your brother and sister in the car okay?"
Its a 45 minute drive to the cemetery and a 5 minute walk to the grave site. Bradley makes sure y/n and the kids are settled before walking back to the main road to meet Coyote, Bob, Payback, Fanboy, and Maverick, the six who would carry Jake's coffin to its final resting place.
Nick, Jace, and Carrie sat next to each other in a few of the chairs at out, Carole sat next to the twins, keeping an eye on them as y/n is greeted by those who came to show their respects.
"Hey y/n/n." Y/n turns to see Lottie, Cass, and Tyler walking up to her.
"Hey guys." She softly smiles giving Lottie and Cass a hug, shaking hands with Tyler. "How are you holding up?" She asks Lottie.
"I'm okay." She smiles softly. "I'm more worried about you. Bradley said you've been avoiding it."
"I'm okay, Lottie. Just ready for it to be over." Y/n sighs.
"Its never gonna truly be over, y/n. You're always gonna miss him." Y/n softly smiles at Cass.
"Oh my baby." Y/n rolls her eyes at the hysterics she hears, turning around to spot her overly hysterical mother making her way up to the gravesite.
"Here we go." She mutters, walking up to the woman.
"Oh my—"
"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to go sit over here." Phoenix steps in, keeping y/n from having to deal with her mother.
"I'm family." Adeline retaliates. "We're burying MY son!" They hysterics continue.
"I'm sorry ma'am but only those okayed by the next of kin can sit with the family and unfortunately you are not."
"This was that bitches doing wasn't it? That ungrateful little minx is trying to cut me out of their lives, keep me away from my grand babies."
"Ma'am that is a commanding officer you are insulting." Goose steps forward. "If you cannot show the necessary respect, I will have to have you escorted away from here."
"Wow she's really got everyone playing along with her little game." Adeline scoffs. "That uniform is probably fake."
"Thats it." Y/n scoffs, joining Phoenix and Goose before Adeline. "Ms. Seresin, I am Lieutenant Commander Seresin-Bradshaw. This is Lieutenant Commander Trace and Vice Admiral Bradshaw, my father-in-law. You are no longer welcome here."
"Lieutenants, please escort Ms. Seresin to the main road and make sure she gets in a cab. Escort her to the airport and ensure she returns to Texas, today." Goose directs the two boys who nod and immediately guide her away as she screams.
"No! Thats my son!"
"Not anymore." Y/n says, turning back towards the gravesite, moving to sit next to her kids.
Its not even 5 minutes later that she can see her husband and friends slowly walking up, Jake's casket in the middle of all of them. She tries to hold back her tears, to stay strong for her kids but the reality of the moment sets in. Her brother was in the box with an American flag draped over it. Her husband was about to hand that flag, folded, to her. Coyote was about to hammer Jake's wings into the casket. She was about to permanently say goodbye.
She stared blankly at the box as they lifted the flag, Fanboy and Payback received the honor of folding it. Fanboy takes the perfectly folded flag and hands it to Bradley with a salute. Bradley turns and makes his way to y/n. She stands when he enters her line of sight. He gently places the flag in her hands, a small comforting smile on his face as he nods to his wife. He steps over the Nick and kneels before his eldest. He pulls a copy of Jake's dog tags, handing them over. Nick says thank you, taking the chain from his father, but he doesn't hold on to them. Nick stands on his chair and turns around to where Lottie stands.
"Here Aunt Lottie." He holds out the chain hanging from his small hands. "Uncle Jake want you to have them." Everyone's hearts melt at his comment.
Lottie's eyes well with tears as she takes the chain from her nephew. She pulls the little boy up to her arms hugging him tightly.
Bradley stands, walking over to the other side of y/n, his hand resting on her shoulder as she sits. Maverick says a few words before Coyote steps up, pounding the wings in.
Everyone gathers at the Hard Deck afterwards. Carole and Goose volunteer to take the kids, insisting that y/n needs the weekend to reset from everything. Before anyone leaves, they all stop and offer their condolences to y/n and Bradley. They knew anyone who had ever worked with Jake may want to attend but no one expected this much people to show up.
Y/n must have said thank you a hundred times before she started feeling overwhelmed. More people walking up right after the other. Keeping a straight face, she tries to push the feeling down as more of Jake's previous coworkers come up to her. She offers a small smile to anyone who came up to her but soon it because difficult to muster the smile, which slowly turned to difficulty breathing. Bradley must have sensed her distress (or probably saw the growing shake in her hands) because it wasn't long that he was leading her away from the crowd of people and into Penny's quiet office.
"Baby? You okay?" Everything broke in that instant. One second its shallow breaths, the next its full blown hyperventilation. "Okay, deep breaths babe, come on." Bradley runs a gentle hand up and down her back as she sobs, sitting on the small couch.
"Hey is everything alrigh—" Pete pauses in the doorway of the office as soon as he sees the state of y/n. "What happened?"
"I don't know. I think she got overwhelmed with everybody out there and the minute I got her back here she just broke down." Bradley explains.
"Alright, Bradley go get her some water from the bar. Y/n, look at me. You need to slow your breathing. You gotta ground yourself." Pete instructs, pulling a chair up to sit next to her. "Can you tell me 5 things you can see?"
She mumbles her answer but Pete can see her eyes move around.
"Okay, how about 4 things you can touch?"
She continues mumbling but is still clearer than before, her breathing slows.
"3 things you can hear." Bradley comes back into the room, glass of water in hand.
"You, the—the music, everyone o-o-out there." She stutters.
"2 things you smell."
"Bradley's cologne. Alcohol." She answers clearly, breathing completely back to normal.
"1 thing you taste." Mav finishes.
"My tears." She laughs, licking her lips.
"Here you go." Bradley hands her the water and she immediately drinks it, downing half the glass in seconds.
"Thanks." She mutters, pulling the glass from her lips.
"What happened out there kid? That was a pretty bad panic attack." Maverick questions.
"I just... all those people coming up. Saying the same thing, over and over. I'm so sick of everyone feeling bad for me. I get it, I lost a brother. But I'm not the only one here that lost someone important in their life! Lottie lost the love of her life! Bradley, Phoenix, Bob, Coyote, all of them. They lost a wingman. Hell! Yes, my mother lost her favorite child. Yet everyone wants to tell my that they're sorry, why? Cause I'm the one who got handed that stupid flag?" She says exasperated. "I just want it all to stop."
"I'm sorry, baby. I didn't know you felt like that." Bradley's gaze never leaves the ground, only moving when y/n's hand rests on his cheek, guiding him to look her in the eyes.
"Do not start blaming yourself for this. I did it to myself. You couldn't have possibly know with how often I locked myself away."
"I knew you were hurting but I had no idea-"
"I didn't want you to know darling. You had enough going on with your nightmares and own panics." Y/n sighs. "I'll be fine but can we just go home please?"
"Of course." Bradley helps her up from the couch, nodding to Maverick as they go to leave.
"Be careful getting home, you two. Get some rest." Mav pats Bradley's shoulder, holding the door open for them to leave.
That night y/n and Bradley held each other a little tighter. When Bradley woke up suddenly from a nightmare he didn't push y/n off to deal with it on his own. When y/n cried over the loss of her brother again, it wasn't alone in the shower or locked away in her office but in the comfort of their bed, Bradley's arms around her as he whispered sweet nothings into her ear.
It got easier for them, years later. Y/n had gotten into the habit of calling out to her brother while in the air. "Talk to me Jake" was a common phrase muttered silently to herself as she'd soar through the air. She always glance down at the photo pinned to the empty space of her jet. It was one of her favorites. Jake and y/n were holding the twins. Everyone has joked about how similar the twins looked like their mother and uncle so a mandatory photo of Jace and Carrie in Jake and y/n's stetsons was a must. The hats clearly to big for the kids but y/n could remember their giggles as Jake held Jace and y/n had Carrie tucked into her side.
Each of the kids got something of their uncle's.
Nicholas Bradley had chosen Jake's helmet, which sat on his bedroom shelf until he left for the Academy 16 years later. Only then was it moved into the living room, right next to the folded flag on the bookshelf. 6 years later when Nick finally got his helmet with his callsign written across the front, there was a small half-finished hangman from the dumb game he played in school placed on the left side of the helmet, in honor of his uncle.
Jacob Dean of course got his namesake's Stetson, which would remain on the wall until he was at least 16, when he would start wearing it everywhere. Jace got had gotten into rodeos that year and considered his uncle's hat good luck anytime he went to compete. When Jace turned 18, he decided to go to the University of Texas, Austin, majoring in business. Upon his graduation, he moved onto the Seresin family ranch and built it into something bigger than it ever was. Adeline, despite her distaste for her daughter, had left the ranch to y/n on her deathbed the tear Jace left for college. Y/n hired a few ranch hands to look after it until her son was ready to take over, only then he would decide who stayed on.
Carole Marie chose something simple of his, the brown leather bomber jacket that he always wore. Once she had finally gown into it, it fitting just slightly big, she wore it everywhere. She even took it to college with her. But her favorite use for it was when she did a lesson for memorial day at the end of every year after she started teaching. She would bring that jacket, her grandfather's dog tags, and her great uncle's helmet to class and tell her students about her family. She'd even manage to convince her older brother to come in if he was ever in town to help her. And on Veteran's day she'd always use those big puppy dog eyes to convince her father to pay her class a visit. A trick she most definitely learned from her mother.
As years went on and their kids grew up, y/n and Bradley slowly made it to a point in their lives where they were no longer affected by their grief and trauma. They happily watched their children graduate, go off to college, graduate again, begin their careers, and get married. They even got to see the birth of their own grandchildren, even witnessing a few great grandchildren. Although they had lost so many due to the nature of their job, they still managed to find the joys in life, all of which had to do with their 3 beautiful children.
