ok to be fair when i watched utena for the first time at 16 i definitely didn't fully Get It. like i still walked away like Woah that was life changing but i missed some very big themes/points and that's why i think rgu really really improves upon and deserves multiple rewatches. and i also think that watching the apocalypse arc for the first time becomes very personal, you take away what you need to take away from the show (or at least i did at 16). so i WANT to give grace to people who may have misinterpreted rgu because it's a complicated show but if people are writing blogs or videos or putting out long form media called stuff like UTENA EXPLAINED 😱 and still fucking miss the point um lol actually

several funny things about this number one obviously being Utena’s use of male pronouns for herself “I (boy) am a TOTALLY NORMAL GIRL” but also unfortunately this is sooooo funny of Touga

both Utena and Anthy both hating the ball for a myriad of reasons but mostly because it represents gender conformity and social rituals based around men and then Utena making her go because she still feels that pressure to be normal and obviously they both hate it… yeah. Adolescence

again soooooo interesting how Juri’s knowledge that the duels/system are harmful devolves into acceptance and apathy because she literally cannot envision a future outside of it— of course tied to her sense of hopelessness about her love for Shiori/her lesbian identity in general, in contrast to Utena’s naive optimism about ideals of nobility, while still upholding the system, eventually allow her to start thinking outside of it.

This is not a duel to possess the Rose Bride, something Juri admits is ‘probably’ not possible— it’s to reinforce her own view that the system cannot be changed, and therefore everything is hopeless.

see I miss stupid ‘filler’ character driven episodes of TV because they offer opportunities like these— like this is a very silly episode but Utena’s behavior in it is so revealing because she’s being SO oblivious and kind of insensitive to Anthy’s feelings here.

The comedy of the situation makes it even MORE revealing— Utena LITERALLY walks a day in Anthy’s shoes and instead of feeling empathy and sadness just starts immediately being like ‘damn your life sucks can we switch back’

obsessed with the way Juri just. Sees right through Miki’s BS but her take is to really advise him to stay true to himself instead of blindly following his own/others delusions about Anthy. He’s not a fighter but he’s extraordinarily talented in other ways and she wants to let him know that that’s okay….. yell

“that shining thing” so far has been used to mean an idealized past version of a girl— a muse to inspire Miki's music, which was Kozue up until now when Miki became disillusioned with her and moved on to projecting this ideal onto Anthy— lines up pretty well with Touga also trying to find an ideal girl which he thinks he has in Utena but not without projecting his ideals of femininity onto her… "the shining thing" being an unreal standard of womanhood tied to an idea of these characters being stuck in the past, unable to grow and develop… well just yeah Nanami is right!!! its nonsense!!!
