A Baby Formula Shortage Leaves Desperate Parents Searching for Food (NYT) Maricella Marquez looked at the last can of baby formula in her kitchen on Tuesday and handed her 3-year-old daughter, who suffers from a rare allergic esophageal disorder, a smaller-than-usual portion of the special nutrition she needs to stay healthy. Ms. Marquez has been calling suppliers all over Texas, asking about any new shipments. “Right now they are out of it, completely,” she said. “I’m desperate.” Ms. Marquez lives outside San Antonio, a city that has seen the nation’s highest rate of formula shortages—56 percent of normal supplies were out of stock as of Tuesday, according to the retail software company Datasembly—amid a nationwide supply crunch that has left parents scrambling to feed their children. The shortage has been a challenge for families across the country, but it is especially palpable at grocery stores and food banks in San Antonio, a Latino-majority city in South Texas where many mothers lack health insurance and work at low-wage jobs that give them little opportunity to breastfeed. Across the city, baby food aisles are nearly empty and nonprofit agencies are working overtime to get their hands on new supplies. The shortage became acute with a recall of a defective brand this year after at least four babies were hospitalized with bacterial infection and at least two babies died. But the recall has been exacerbated by relentless supply-chain woes and labor shortages.
Fuel for the Summer (NYT) On Monday, the U.S. average price for gasoline rose to $4.328 per gallon, back up after prices at the pump had slowly decreased as supply recovered from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year. The new peak is just one cent shy of $4.331, the all-time high gas price posted on March 11 earlier this year. Experts expect prices to continue their climb over the next few weeks as inflation continues to worsen, with some predicting that prices will hit  $4.50 a gallon, a new record. Despite the bad news at the pump, things are still not quite as bad as they were during the 2008 recession: prices would need to hit $5.30 a gallon to outdo the inflation-adjusted record set in 2008.
Watery graves recall early Las Vegas’ organized crime days (AP) Stories about long-departed Las Vegas organized crime figures are surfacing after a second set of unidentified human remains were revealed as the water level falls on drought-stricken Lake Mead. The reservoir on the Colorado River is about a 30-minute drive from the mob-founded Las Vegas Strip. “There’s no telling what we’ll find in Lake Mead,” former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said Monday. Goodman was a defense attorney who represented Mafia figures. “It’s not a bad place to dump a body.” He declined to speculate about who might turn up in the vast reservoir formed by Hoover Dam between Nevada and Arizona. “I’m relatively sure it was not Jimmy Hoffa,” he laughed, referring to the former labor boss who disappeared in 1975. But he added that a lot of his former clients seemed interested in “climate control”—mob speak for keeping the lake level up and bodies down in their watery graves.
No fear of consequences (Washington Post) With the shooting deaths this week of a cameraperson and a director in Veracruz state, the number of journalists killed in Mexico this year is now up to 11. That’s more than in Ukraine, where the world’s press corps is covering a war. Mexico has long been one of the world’s most dangerous countries to be a journalist. But 2022’s killing rampage is on pace to more than triple last year’s total. No one criminal organization or arm of the government is responsible. Instead, the deaths point to the wide range of threats that journalists here face daily—and the impunity that allows their killers to act without fear of consequence. Ascertaining motives behind their killings is a challenge. “There’s a very high percentage in impunity,” Alejandro Encinas Rodríguez, Mexico’s deputy interior minister responsible for human rights, said in late 2020, when only 5 percent of homicides under the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had resulted in a sentence. In the past 30 years, only three journalists’ murders have led to convictions.
UK govt sets out big plans, but little cost of living relief (AP) Britain’s Conservative government set out its agenda for the next year on Tuesday with sweeping promises to cut crime, improve health care and revive the U.K.’s pandemic-scarred economy—but no new help for millions of Britons struggling to pay their bills as the cost of living soars. Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged that the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine had caused economic turmoil, but said “no government can realistically shield everyone from the impact.” Johnson said the coronavirus pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had created “huge disruptions to the global economy.” But the speech included no immediate measures to relieve households struggling with soaring prices for domestic energy and food.
For French Military, War in Ukraine Prompts a Shift in Focus (NYT) For the past five years, French troops have been training at a NATO military base here [in Estonia], nestled among pine forests, for a conflict that seemed improbable. But Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine has suddenly given a new raison d’être to the 200 or so French infantrymen posted in Tapa, a town about 60 miles from the Russian border. By bringing the threat of large-scale combat closer to home, the conflict in Ukraine has spurred France’s efforts to gear up for what Gen. Thierry Burkhard, France’s military chief of staff, calls “high-intensity war.” He said those efforts included improving his country’s ability to swiftly deploy troops and defend against cyber and information warfare. “The interest of European countries is to weaken Russia,” General Burkhard said in an interview with The New York Times and the news service Agence France-Presse, during a trip to Estonia last week. General Burkhard said that, whatever the outcome of the war, “Russia is not going to disappear” and will need to be considered in future talks on European security. In an interview, Lt. Gen. Martin Herem, the commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, struck a more hostile tone toward Russia, saying it must be driven from Ukrainian territory because any success it achieves “will cause huge damage in our region’s stability.”
US, Western Europe fret over uncertain Ukraine war endgame (AP) An interminable and unwinnable war in Europe? That’s what NATO leaders fear and are bracing for as Russia’s war in Ukraine grinds into its third month with little sign of a decisive military victory for either side and no resolution in sight. The possibility of a stalemate is fueling concerns that Ukraine may remain a deadly European battlefield and a source of continental and global instability for months, or even years, to come. Energy and food security are the most immediate worries, but massive Western support for Ukraine while the world is still emerging from coronavirus pandemic and struggling to deal with the effects of climate change could deepen the toll on the global economy. And should Russia choose to escalate, the risk of a broader conflict rises.
Russian troops ill-prepared for Ukraine war, says ex-Kremlin mercenary (Reuters) The Russian military’s failure to seize the Ukrainian capital was inevitable because in the preceding years they had never directly faced a powerful enemy, according to a former mercenary with the Kremlin-linked Wagner Group who fought alongside the Russian army. Marat Gabidullin took part in Wagner Group missions on the Kremlin’s behalf in Syria and in a previous conflict in Ukraine, before deciding to go public about his experience inside the secretive private military company. He quit the Wagner group in 2019, but several months before Russia launched the invasion on Feb. 24 Gabidullin, 55, said he received a call from a recruiter who invited him to go back to fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. He refused, in part because, he said, he knew Russian forces were not up to the job, even though they trumpeted their arsenal of new weapons and their successes in Syria where they helped President Bashar al-Assad defeat an armed rebellion. “They were caught completely by surprise that the Ukrainian army resisted so fiercely and that they faced the actual army,” Gabidullin said about Russia’s setbacks in Ukraine. He said people he spoke to on the Russian side had told him they expected to face rag-tag militias when they invaded Ukraine, not well-drilled regular troops.
In Ukraine, gas shortages further complicate daily life (Washington Post) As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine grinds through its third month, gas shortages are spreading across the country, adding to people’s misery and testing their resilience in new ways. Lines are forming at service stations in major cities, small villages and roadside stops along the highways that stretch over the countryside. Some stations have gone dark because they have no fuel to sell. With supplies tight and limits imposed on how much people can buy, motorists are relying on apps, gas cans and persistence to fill up. The shortages have spread in recent weeks as heavy fighting has shifted mostly to the east and life has started returning to something like normal in central and western Ukraine.
Sri Lanka deploys troops in capital after violence, protests (BBC) As protests continue to rage in Sri Lanka calling for the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaska, security forces have been ordered to shoot looters and rioters on sight. Tens of thousands of army, navy, and air force members were deployed to the streets of Colombo, the island’s capital, but despite their presence, the city’s top police officer was assaulted by a mob who accused him of not doing enough to protect peaceful protestors. Police have reported that eight people have died and over 200 people have been wounded since Monday. Some were injured by pro-government mobs, others when police fired tear gas into crowds. Lawyers acting for the protesters told the BBC they were filing cases against supporters of the prime minister. The former prime minister himself was moved to a naval base for his safety after he resigned.
Al Jazeera reporter killed during Israeli raid in West Bank (AP) A female journalist for Al Jazeera was shot and killed while covering an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin early Wednesday. The broadcaster and a reporter who was wounded in the incident blamed Israeli forces, while Israel claimed there was evidence the two were hit by Palestinian gunfire. Shireen Abu Akleh, a well-known Palestinian reporter for the broadcaster’s Arabic language channel who is also a U.S. citizen, was shot and died soon afterward. Ali Samoudi, another Palestinian journalist, was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the back. The Qatar-based network interrupted its broadcast to announce her death. In a statement flashed on its channel, it called on the international community to “condemn and hold the Israeli occupation forces accountable for deliberately targeting and killing our colleague.”

How to Save Money by Reducing Grocery Expenses?
This article provides useful tips to reduce your food and grocery expenses. One easy way to have more money is to reduce your living expenses. Thus by using a little time and effort, you can save money.
With the rise of inflation and the cost of gas, we are all looking to save money on life's everyday items. Have you noticed the cost of Groceries? It seems that everyone is spending more these days. There are lots of ways to save money at home by making small changes. These tips can help you save some money on grocery suppliers in Texas.
Buy from low-cost sources - Make a list of the most expensive items you buy regularly. Go around to your local stores to see where they are the cheapest. Buy bread and pastry items at a day-old bread store or day-old pastry store if you have one of them in town. They probably will taste just as good as if purchased at a grocery store.
Buy in bulk, if appropriate - You usually can save money if you buy in bulk. If you don't use up everything before it spoils, you can share it with friends or family. (You can rotate the purchases among the group of people that you share with.) You will need to have a storage area large enough for whatever amounts you choose to keep for yourself. Make this a place that is easy to access.
Buy lower-cost items - Often, certain brands of food and other items are cheaper than the heavily advertised brands. In many chain stores, the store brand tends to be lower cost than the better-known national brands. (Better to pay just for the food itself, without having to pay for the advertising expense.)
One way to find lower-cost brands is to compare the unit cost for the same item in different brands. Buy lower-cost cuts of meats and slow-cook them to make them tender. Use appropriate spices and flavorings to make them tasty. When local produce is plentiful, it usually will be cheaper than out of season produce that has to be shipped in. You might also find bargains at a farmers' market when they are open for the season.
Change your habits - Do you buy things on a whim rather than because you have planned to use them in meals? Do you buy bananas in a bunch and then have to throw some of them out? If you have some of these problems, you might want to change these wasteful habits.
Don't go shopping when you are hungry. You'll be tempted to buy things on impulse. Try going without meat one or more times a week. Instead, you might try having soup and sandwich meals.
Convenience costs money - You can save a great deal of money by forfeiting various types of conveniences. Don't go to a fast-food outlet or a restaurant for lunch. Please make your own lunch at home and bring it with you to work. Don't buy frozen dinners. They are a very expensive way to purchase food. If you want, you can make your frozen meals at home.

On a Wednesday afternoon in late March, dozens of striking metalworkers gathered outside the gates of a steel factory three miles south of the Texas border. “Get out corrupt unions!” a banner read. The event was broadcast on Facebook Live, receiving over 10,000 views within hours. Messages of support streamed in from across Mexico, and the Mexican diaspora as far away as Texas, Florida, France, and Dubai. It was a calm day—workers grilled chicken thighs and sausages over charcoal in the shade of palm trees; a reporter asked for interviews. Four days later, on March 31, state police in riot gear would show up outside the plant, beating workers and tearing apart their encampment. The metal workers, who earn roughly $2 an hour, had been on strike over their wages for 55 days without pay.
The strike is part of an ongoing struggle between workers and U.S. manufacturing suppliers in Matamoros, a Mexican border city of half a million, known to many in the U.S. only as a migrant checkpoint. Since January 12, around 50,000 workers have gone on strike in Matamoros—including those employed by or supplying to Walmart, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Ford, Telsa, and Auto Zone. Another 15,000 non-union workers have staged illegal work stoppages. It’s the largest strike the city has seen in 30 years in a country with a long history of endemic, and at times violent, worker suppression. The so-called maquiladora industry workers in Matamoros, some of them deported migrants from the U.S., have demanded a 20 percent raise and a onetime bonus of 32,000 pesos ($1,655), calling themselves the “20/32 movement.” In recent weeks, 90 out of 95 factories in Matamoros have conceded to workers, leading labor analysts to predict, at long last, an upheaval of traditional labor relations in Mexico—what has been called “a labor spring.”
For decades, pro-government unions in Mexico have suppressed workers’ collective bargaining rights by colluding with factories to keep wages low—enticing U.S. industrialists to move their manufacturing operations south of the border. But now, the country has its first leftist, labor-friendly president in modern Mexican history. And the United States has offered another stimulus to union activity: Amidst the new protections for the pharmaceutical industry, provisions that require more car parts to be made in the United States, and the tightening of intellectual property laws, the Trump administration’s overhaul of the North American Free Trade Act (NAFTA) in 2018 also included provisions that require Mexico to recognize independent unions, hold democratic union elections for contracts and leadership, and establish independent labor courts. “It’s been 30 years of union suppression. Thirty years without real raises for workers,” said Alfonso Bouzas, a labor expert at the Universidad Nacional Autónomo de México in Mexico City. “Now we’re going to have more and more labor movements in Mexico.”
The trigger for the strikes, odd though it may sound, was a wage increase. On January 1, Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador doubled the minimum wage on the U.S.-Mexico border to $9.20 a day (the rest of Mexico received a 16 percent increase to $5.30 a day). Most manufacturing workers in Matamoros already earned this amount. They soon became aware of a provision in their union contracts—unique to Matamoros—that requires companies to match federal minimum wage increases.
Two weeks later, “wildcat” strikes, i.e. those not authorized by union leadership, broke out in 45 maquiladoras across Matamoros—mostly auto-parts manufacturers, including Adient, which claims to make one in every three automotive seats in the world. Soon, workers at grocery stores like Sam’s Club, Walmart, and even the city’s main milk distributor, Leche Vaquita, went on strike. Within 10 days, Matamoros’s maquiladora association estimates that companies lost $100 million. Employers across the city threatened to call in federal forces, shut down operations, and leave the city. This week, the Tamaulipas state police were called in to break up encampments at steelworks factories, and a human resources manager at a Coca-Cola bottling plant ordered non-union employees to attack striking workers, including a pregnant woman. But only two plants have shuttered to date, and the federal police have not been deployed.
The movement has also travelled over social media to the industrial cities of Reynosa, Agua Prieta and Ciudad Victoria in northern Mexico, where workers have staged their own wildcat strikes. “We consider this a battle definitively won by the workers,” said Susana Prieto Terrazas, a labor lawyer who lives in El Paso, Texas and the unofficial leader of the 20/32 movement, who has amassed over 80,000 followers on Facebook. In recent weeks, she’s received phone calls from workers in the border cities of Reynosa, Tijuana, and Ciudad Juárez, asking her to replicate her movement in their cities.
Over the past several decades, vast swaths of manufacturing areas in the United States have suffered the loss of unionized jobs to Mexico, where labor is one-tenth of the cost. Less discussed is that those jobs, once outsourced, do not support a middle-class lifestyle for Mexican workers, either. In 1992, before the passage of NAFTA, maquiladora workers earned the equivalent of nearly $19.50 a day. Today, they earn just half of that. Many peddle goods, like used clothing, sweet bread, or tamales to survive, as the price of basic goods in the Mexican borderlands is much higher than the rest of the country, sometimes even surpassing those in U.S. border cities: A pound of Serrano chilies in Matamoros costs $2.84, over half the daily minimum wage before the recent increase. A maquiladora worker I met in 2017 who worked for the German electronics company Bosch in Ciudad Juárez, another border city, told me it took him a month to save up enough money to take his family to the movie theater.
But the revamping of the free trade agreement between the United States and Mexico, at the urging of Donald Trump, could reverse some of the post-NAFTA trends, if its terms can be enforced. In part, that’s because Trump is more protectionist than prior Republican presidents. Trump’s U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer, one of his more progressive appointees who grew up in a depressed blue-collar town in Ohio, fought tooth and nail for the new deal to include increased labor protections for workers both in Mexico and the United States, much to the ire of other Republican legislators. These provisions also helped induce Democrats and their union allies to back the NAFTA revision, known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Such protections tend to appeal to U.S. unions for two reasons, somewhat in tension with one another: First, they would improve labor protections for Mexican workers. Second, the increased cost of labor in Mexico might keep manufacturing jobs from fleeing to Mexico in the first place, an outcome that would satisfy both unions and Trump. “Our unions have pointed out problems in Mexican labor law for many years,” said Finnegan, the global worker’s rights coordinator at the AFL-CIO. In theory, the new deal addresses some of those. “The big question remains enforcement. We have lots of doubts.” On Tuesday, Nancy Pelosi said that the House will not pass the USMCA unless Mexico implements labor reforms first. “We have to see that [Mexico passes] the legislation, that they have the factors in place that will make sure it’s implemented and they demonstrate some commitments in sincerity, because it’s a big issue how workers are treated in Mexico,” she said.
In recent years, under international pressure, the Mexican government has shown some willingness to enact reforms. The killed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) required Mexico do away with corrupt labor courts and give workers a vote in union elections. Last year, Mexican government ratified constitutional reforms, including Convention 98, of the International Labor Organization, to guarantee free and independent unions. These reforms now sit before the Mexican Congress, and are expected to pass in April.

South Holland syrup maker poised to pick up market share from Aunt Jemima
Michele Hoskins felt a seismic shift for her company on a Tuesday morning in mid-June when Quaker Oats announced it was retiring the Aunt Jemima brand due to concerns about racial stereotypes.
“My life changed,” Hoskins said. “Our company changed. It brought awareness to us.”
Her South Holland-based company, Michele Foods, has been selling syrup and other products since 1984. Still, she has a tiny fraction of a market dominated by Aunt Jemima.
Hoskins saw her company’s profile suddenly elevated.
“The next day my tech guy called and said, ‘Your website has crashed,’” Hoskins said.
People were discovering her company on social media. After 35 years of hard work, she was an overnight sensation.
The Aunt Jemima brand dates back to 1889, according to Quaker Oats.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought that anything would happen that would make her do anything that would affect my company,” Hoskins said.
After building her business for 35 years, the south suburban entrepreneur is poised to expand her company’s operations.
“I should be in every major retail chain in the country. I should be able to supply customers who want my product,” she said.
Hoskins expects other competitors also will try to seize the chance to increase their share of the syrup market.
“I’m not going to take Aunt Jemima’s place. No one ever can, because she’s a different brand from a different era,” she said. “But if you’re looking for a minority company that sells in that category, I’m that. I think we should have the same opportunity as everyone else because we persevered.”
Hoskins said she launched her company in 1984 while she was going through a divorce and moving back into her parents’ home with her three young girls.
“I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life,” she said.
She decided to make syrup based on a secret recipe developed by her great-great-great-grandmother, America Washington.
“She was a slave who worked as a cook on a plantation,” Hoskins said. “The family she worked for did not like molasses. So she came up with this concoction of honey, churned butter and cream. It was delicious.”
Hoskins had her idea, but no clue how to start a business.
“I didn’t know anything about the food industry or product development,” she said.
She cooked up a batch on the stove and took it to local restaurants, whose owners told Hoskins the syrup separated and had to be reheated.
“I think at that point most people would have gotten discouraged,” Hoskins said.
She applied lessons she learned from teaching world religions at a private school.
“You can do anything if you put your mind to it,” she said. “I still believe that.”
Hoskins found someone to make her syrup so she could focus on marketing and distribution.
“I had a company at 35th and Kedzie that made the product for me and they would deliver it in 55-gallon drums in the alley,” she said.
She and her daughters would fill bottles and place handmade labels on them in her parents’ basement.
“I would take it around to neighborhood stores,” Hoskins said.
Even though independent South Side retailers agreed to stock her product, no customers initially bought it.
“It wasn’t moving,” she said. “I would go in myself and buy it to create this illusion of movement.”
To expand her reach, she visited the corporate offices of Jewel Foods in Melrose Park. She asked to talk with a buyer.
“They had never seen anybody walk in like that,” she said. “I was the first minority supplier for Jewel stores.”
She expanded her line to three syrup flavors: butter pecan, maple crème and honey crème. She worked to get her products placed in Kroger, Publix, Safeway and other grocery stores across the country. Companies were eager to do business with her, she said.
“I realized who I am made a difference, because diversity was hot,” she said.
By 1990, after she had been featured on local TV news, she was contacted by Walmart, which was looking to increase its diversity, she said. Then she was contacted by Harpo Studios.
“Oprah was looking for women who had made their first million (dollars),” Hoskins said.
She appeared three different times on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” she said. The first appearance led to her getting called back for a second.

“(Oprah) asked me something and I said you create your own destiny,” Hoskins said. “That’s profound, right?”
Her business continued to grow. She supplied syrup to Denny’s restaurants, then Popeyes chicken. While networking at a conference, she received another call from Harper Studios. They had learned a viewer in Texas had planned to take her own life but was stopped by something she heard on the television.
“She heard, ‘create your own destiny,’ and stopped,” Hoskins said. The woman started her own business and wanted to thank the woman who inspired her. The two appeared together.
“That was a tearful show,” Hoskins said.
She was featured in newspapers and business magazines and developed a reputation as a savvy entrepreneur. During an interview in her South Holland office, she pointed out a magazine cover about her doing business with General Foods.
“I called up the head of General Foods and said I had done research on Bisquick,” she said. “Seventy percent of people who buy Bisquick use it to make pancakes, and you only have 2% market share in the African American community. “I didn’t have a pancake and General Foods didn’t have a syrup. I said, ‘I can get you some share in the African American community by my face.‘”
They partnered and offered a coupon where shoppers received discounts when they bought Bisquick and a Michele’s Foods syrup together, she said.
She reached out to Kellogg’s. The maker of Eggo frozen waffles and other breakfast products had no syrup brand of its own.
“They wanted a share because Aunt Jemima had 77% of the syrup market,” she said. “I helped them develop Eggo syrup. I did that because when they did that, it brought light to the syrup category.”
Aunt Jemima’s market dominance left little room for competition.
“The syrup category is a very unsaturated market,” she said. “There are certain products in retail where you don’t add to them, there’s no room for them, there’s no market share. It’s just a closed category.”
Aunt Jemima continues to dominate market share, with Mrs. Butterworth’s, Log Cabin and Hungry Jack distant competitors, according to 2019 market data published by Statista. Aunt Jemima sells about $500 million worth of syrup annually, Hoskins said.
“Aunt Jemima owned that category by her image and by the perception that she was African American,” Hoskins said. “A lot of us grew up on that not understanding anything about advertising.”
Brands like Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben perpetuated stereotypes about Blacks, she said.
“People would walk past me to get to her,” Hoskins said. “For years I didn’t have my face on there.”
Hoskins said she introduced an illustrated image of herself to her syrup bottles about 18 months ago. She had resisted for more than 30 years because of something a grocery store buyer said to her when she was starting her business 35 years ago.
“I went out to one of these suburbs and told the manager that was my product,” she said. “He called (the regional grocery chain) and said, ‘I don’t want Black products out here. I don’t want anything that’s going to draw the African American community into my store.’”
Hoskins said she expanded her reach by masking her identity.
“I became a general-market product,” she said. “My product was sold in Colorado and Utah. No one knew this was an African American product.”
Hoskins has shared her expertise about business with others. She has mentored 225 people over the past 20 years, she said.
“Some of them have great products,” she said. “One girl was on ‘Shark Tank.’ I have a guy in Virginia that’s doing about $20 million (of business) a year with the government.”
At this stage in her life, Hoskins could look back on an award-winning, successful career, but she is not one to rest on laurels.
“We still did not have the consumer awareness that we wanted,” she said. “Right now we’re in about 6,000 stores.”
Michele Foods remains relatively small, with just four employees and modest annual sales, Hoskins said. Her product is made by a subcontractor near Cincinnati, she said. Profits and sales have never been her primary motivation, she said.
“I’m in it to create a legacy,” Hoskins said. “I feel that at some point we as a people have to understand how to build, create and pass on wealth.”
Most minority-owned companies sell out or fade away, she said. Hoskins wants to eventually pass her company along to her daughter Keisha, who runs social media and other projects for the business.
“If my great-great-great-grandmother could pass down this recipe, I surely could pass it along to her,” Hoskins said. “That becomes our legacy. It’s my legacy in a bottle. Whatever wealth is built into that, we break that curse.”

#5yrsago WinCo: worker-owned grocery chain that pays benefits, pensions, living wages -- and has lower prices than WalMart
Tumblr media
WinCo is a western chain of worker-owned stores that consistently underprice WalMart, while still paying a living wage to their staff and decent prices to their suppliers. Their secret appears to be a smaller selection of goods, sourced directly from factories -- but surely the fact that they're not extracting billions in profits for a family of rapacious plutocrats also helps keep prices low.
Burt Flickinger III, a reputable grocery store analyst, called them "Walmart's worst nightmare." They provide health benefits to all employees who work 24 hours per week or more, as well as pensions. They are expanding into Texas, and Time's Brad Tuttle predicts that they'll double in size every five to seven years.
