How to Prep and Apply your Lace Front Wig

Lacefront wigs are a little different from your usual cosplay wig! These wigs are often a little more expensive and far more realistic; they also require a few extra, easy steps before they are ready to wear! The first thing you'll notice about a lacefront wig is the large amount of sheer lace that comes attached to the front of the wig:

Looking closely at the hairline, you can see that individual hairs are hand-tied to this lace. This means that when you lay the sheer lace against your head, the lace blends into your skin and it looks as though those individual hairs are growing right out of your head, just like your real hair would. This gives you a super realistic-looking hairline that can't be matched by a cheaper wig.

To get started prepping your lacefront, first you'll need to trim off any excess lace. In the above stock model you can see that the wig comes to you with a LOT of extra lace - this is so that you can cut it to your liking. Some people will trim this lace very, very close to the hairline, and some people will leave a few millimeters of extra lace to make it easier to glue down. I usually trim my lace a few millimeters away from the hairline.

Place the wig on your head. If everything fits and the lace lays flat, you're good to go! However sometimes you might notice that the lace buckles a little bit in places where the shape does not exactly fit your head. For Uniqso’s Unicorn wig, it fits well in the front but pulls away a little on the side near my ears:

This is easily fixed by temporary glues like spirit gum, or lace front or toupee tape. In a pinch you can even use clear glue stick! I actually like to use this a lot to pin down the earflaps of my lace fronts because it isn't messy and does not leave a residue on the lace.

Take your glue of choice and apply it to your skin, underneath where the lace will sit. If using spirit gum, tap your skin a few times with your finger until the spirit gum becomes tacky. Press your lace against the glue and hold for 15-30 seconds until fully set. Repeat for the other side of your wig.

As a note, if you are having trouble with your glue sticking, try applying it to clean, makeup-less skin. Makeup can sometimes interfere with how well your glue sticks.

I love lacefronts, so when I saw Uniqso had started carrying some, I had to try them!! All of their styles right now are ombre, 2-tone colors. This makes them a bit difficult to use for cosplay but for fashion wigs they’re pretty fun! This rainbow, unicorn wig in particular is especially cool:

The wig itself is VERY thick, and the fiber is nice and smooth. This is a great regular-wear wig because the fibers seem to resist tangling and at the same time it isn’t shiny at all. The lace is a pale tone with is great for people like me, but the cap itself is a tiny bit smaller than what I’m used to - definitely smaller than an Arda or Wigisfashion cap, but it still fits well on my 21″ instead.

My only complaints here are that I really wish that the dark roots weren’t quite so dark. It’s a pretty jarring contrast between the roots themselves and the rainbow hair, but this is personal preference. I also find that the hairline is a little thick. Personally I like the hairline of my lacefronts to be thinner since this looks a bit more natural. However I’d say that the level of thickness is pretty similar to what you would get from Arda - more noticeable with these darker roots but nothing out of the ordinary.

This red lacefront is made in a very similar fashion to the unicorn wig - it’s VERY, VERY thick. Almost too thick honestly! It takes a bit of work to get the crown of the wig looking natural because there’s SO much hair; you’ll most definitely want to take a blowdryer to the hair at the crown and on the earflaps in order to train them in the right direction. The cap of this wig is a similar, just on the small size, but the smaller size is a little more noticeable because of the shorter hair length here.

The color and the cut are really great - a very bright, saturated red and orange that match the photo very well. Again the hair line is a little thick for my tastes, but that boils down to personal preference.

Rinse the wig one to two times until all the shampoo is removed. Then, apply conditioner to the wig and let it sit for two minutes so it penetrates the hair. Use cold water to rinse the wig until all the conditioner comes off the wig.

Once the conditioner is removed, wrap the wig in a dry towel and pat the wig gently. You can spray a very light coat of conditioning spray, 10-12 inches away from the wig, as an optional final step. Let the wig dry on a wig stand and then brush or comb it with a wig brush. Avoid placing the wig in direct sunlight and do not try to brush the wig while it is still wet.

Use synthetic wig shampoo and wig conditioner to wash a synthetic wig.

Do this every six to eight wears and always brush the wig with a wig brush before washing. You can find synthetic wig shampoo and wig conditioner at your local hair supply store.

Pour two capfuls of synthetic wig shampoo into a sink or basin of cold water. Then, turn the wig inside out and immerse it in the water. Swirl the wig gently in the water and soak it for about five minutes. Use cold water to rinse the wig until all the shampoo is gone.

Pour one to two capfuls of wig conditioner on the wig. Let the fibers absorb the conditioner, sitting for about two minutes. Use cold water to gently remove all the conditioner from the wig.

Take a dry towel and wrap the wig with it, patting out any excess water. Never rub the wig when it is wet.

Spray a revitalizing conditioner over the wig to condition the wig fibers. Let the wig dry completely on a wig stand. Only brush the wig when it is dry.
