Not done talking about Encanto >:]
i love seeing the different opinions about Encanto that colombian people have. i personally LOVE the movie, i love the themes it explores, i love how they delve into intergenrational trauma, i love the spanish dub. i love how they don’t frame Alma as an evil villain but rather a very traumatized woman who buried all her feelings deep down and was doing her best to take care of her family, i love how they also didn’t excuse her behaviour but still gave her a chance to change and redeem herself overtime, i love how in the end it is clear that the family has a lot of healing to do but it ends in a positive note, showing that they are going to be alright
many people disliked how the movie showed “multiple colombias“, and i totally get that, but i honestly love that.....it’s obviously not accurate, there’s a big mixture of flora and fauna and traditions and food and clothing that isn’t realistic. and if this was supposed to be a a more realistic film, i definitely would be upset. but it’s a fictional movie about a colombian family saved by a miracle who now have powers. the miracle lifted up the mountains and build a house out of nowhere. i like the ambigious setting because in my opinion, it makes sense in this context
and also because i think it’s really fun to explore all these different aspects of colombian culture. i do agree that this film was not made for colombians, that’s very clear, but i think that’s fine tbh. it’s disney, it’s a usamerican film, i really don’t care. as one of my teachers put it: the fact that they showed many colombias help a lot of people feel represented in the film because colombia is a very diverse country and it’s clear they were going for a “representing and celebrating as many aspects of this culture as we can“ kind of things instead of focusing on one region and working around that
all i want is for people to look for more actual colombian media, i want more stories about us made by us for us, and i want these stories to be recognized internationally
