Hi! Could you write fluff #11 with Nathan MacKinnon? I honestly never notice if someone flirts with me and I think it’s really funny lol 😊
prompt fluff #11: “Are you flirting with me?” “You finally noticed?”
Falling for Nathan MacKinnon snuck up on you like a car with no headlights at night. One moment, the two of you were just friends, laughing, relaxing, and the next you were head over heels for him.
And he had no idea.
Nate, as adorable and sweet he is, was a bit of an idiot when it came to things that weren’t hockey. He was bad at Fortnite, he was bad at online shopping (somehow) and he was bad at recognizing you were into him.
After nearly a month of trying to get over him, you decided to finally do something about it.
First, you invited him over for dinner and wore a really nice outfit. But then he, thinking it was a friend hangout, invited Landy, his wife, Mikko, Andre and Naz.
A week later, when Halloween rolled around, you asked if he wanted to do a costume with you, but he said he was already doing a costume with Landy and EJ.
So you dressed up anyway in something that showed off your legs, and he didn’t say anything.
You started adding more flirts in your texts with him. More innuendos.
Next, you went to a game wearing a jersey with his name on it, but he didn’t even notice beyond demanding you keep wearing it during games because he got four points that night.
After American Thanksgiving, you started getting more flirty with him in person, emboldened even with the lack of acknowledgment as you got more comfortable with the idea of being into him. You touched him more, skating your fingers down his arm, complimenting him on how he looked, laughing more at his jokes.
But still, nothing.
You were getting wine drunk at Mel and Gabe’s house while Gabe was out having a Dad night with the kids, and you said, “I don’t know what to do.”
“Have you tried telling him?” She asked.
You gave her an incredulous look, “Are you insane? What if he rejects me? What if he never speaks to me again?”
“Is that really worse than not knowing?” She asked.
And you frowned. “I don’t know.”
“Well,” She said. “Until you figure that out, I say keep up your plan. Now that I know what you’re doing, it’s actually really funny.”
“Why are we friends again?” You asked.
And were reminded when you woke up the next morning snuggled in a blanket with a gatorade and two Advil nearby.
You pulled back a bit on your heavy flirting. Clearly, it wasn’t going to get through Nate’s thick skull. And you didn’t want to show your hand too much and get people other than Mel in on the scheme. So you decided to be chiller.
And you thought it finally paid off when Nate gave you his ticket to the family skate that December. You dressed as cute as you could, and were so excited to skate with Nate, but he ended up spending most of the time with his teammates’ kids.
Which was adorable, but you had been envisioning him holding your hand and catching you if you slipped. Instead, you just watched from afar as he had fun with others.
“Are you having fun?” He asked you, eventually skating back to you. Unable to bring him down, you faked a smile.
“Yeah of course. I’m gonna get some hot chocolate though,” You said, wanting to leave because he looked so good in Avalanche blue.
But in your haste, you slipped and nearly ate shit, but luckily he caught you.
And a cheesy line entered your head as Nate’s big, competent hands caught your side and elbow.
“Are you alright?” He asked, looking deep into your eyes.
“Looks like I’m falling for you,” You said, a bit hopeful.
Nate laughed. “Haha, Y/N,” He said, and righted you easily. He didn’t even cop a feel on your waist when he could have.
Maybe it was time to realize he was never into you.
You stopped all your dicking around, pulling back from him as the midseason and the winter holidays kicked up. You decided to spend Christmas with your family, and you didn’t respond to Nate or any player on the Avalanche’s texts. You did text Mel though to say I’m an idiot and to respond to cute family Christmas photos on Insta.
But she refused to be ignored near the end of December, and insisted you show up to her New Year’s party.
You did, dressed up a little, and chatted with the players you were not at least partially in love with. As it neared midnight, and Nate came up to you, after skirting at the edges of the party and avoiding you.
“Hey, can we talk?” He said.
“Yeah, of course,” You agreed, even as your heart ached, and followed him outside.
The Denver chill was biting, and you instantly wrapped your arms around yourself. Wordlessly, Nate handed you his jacket. He hadn’t done it since back in the beginning of fall.
You slipped it on and tried not to be obvious as you inhaled his warmth. When he wasn’t sweaty after a game or workout, he smelled so good.
“Are things weird between us?” He asked.
You winced, “Nate-”
“Because if I did something, I’m sorry,” He said.
“No, you didn’t do anything, it’s all me,” You said. “I- fuck. I have a crush on you. Which is stupid I know, but-”
“You have a crush on me?” He asked, blinking in surprise. “Wait... all those times... you were flirting with me?”
You snorted, you couldn’t help it. “You finally noticed. Great.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t notice sooner,” He said. “Shit- I- I was trying not to be into you, so I was trying to pull back, and I thought things have been weird, but I thought it was me-”
You’d never known Nate MacKinnon to ramble.
“Wait, you were into me?” You perked up. “Wow, I really could have just said something all this time?”
He smiled, a soft one in the corners of his mouth, “It would have helped.”
“Here’s a hint,” You said, and leaned up and kissed him, even though it wasn’t midnight.
But you had a feeling you’d be able to kiss him whenever soon.
I played with it a bit but I can imagine this with Nate pretty well lol. Hope you still liked it!
