I’m about halfway through Katy Hays’ The Cloisters and I’m so annoyed by its treatment of academia/academics. Currently, I’m most annoyed by the plot point that claims professors "thought nothing of throwing out material they had already incorporated into their research.”
...Before I checked her author bio, I immediately assumed that Hays had never met an academic or peeked inside an academic’s office. One does not simply throw away material! Okay, I culled my grad school folders full of offprints, but they still take up a shelf. And throwing away material central to one’s research topic?!? Never.
Maybe this seems nitpicky, but I often feel as though books of this kind, though belonging to a subgenre allegedly celebrating such things, have contempt for the substance of what it is that scholars do and how they (we) do it. And this irritates me, not least because I don’t understand why.

Job Networking Online Tips - HelpGuide.org
Don't be shy about directly contacting actual working employees, including non-managers, in those same departments. Be friendly, not demanding or expectant, explain how much respect you have for the company (by this point you should have already researched each employer-prospect enough to state briefly, but meaningfully, about why you respect them). Tell them why you seek employment there. Ask for advice on the smartest way to navigate a path to a job offer, or tips on which areas of that department could use some help, and about any ongoing business challenges there relating to your areas of training. Too many job seekers find themselves weeks or months past the time when they expect to be hired and started at a solid, career-level, employment position. If that description sounds anything like your circumstances, then pay attention to the following tactics that often jump-start and move ahead a job search onto the employment superhighway. So first, you have to find those employer/managers then you have to pick their brains.

A job search website cannot, of course, guarantee you a job--not even a paid subscription service like TheLadders, but they may help you get your foot into the door. Think of them as your back-up plan, and spend the majority of energy on the important building blocks of the career search process: career assessment, career research, and mapping out an effective job search. Save This  Job Networking Online Tips - HelpGuide.org. From the foregoing, it is evident that using the conventional techniques in your job search will not land you the desired job. It is only when combined with the unconventional techniques that you get the desired result. This is because while the traditional job search techniques focus on the visible job market, theses tactics penetrate the hidden job market or those jobs that are either not yet available or virtually unknown. You should therefore stop making the same mistakes most job hunters are making by making use of these unconventional tactics. However, lets say your notes say you applied for that office manager job two months ago and the listing is reappearing. Apply again. Likely, the company hired an office manager and their new-hire didn't pan out.

Tip #5: Don't bother to tailor your resume to the language of the post. Don't bother tailoring your cover letter to the language of the posting. Its logic, isn't it. As more and more jobs get posted on job boards, searching these millions of jobs requires a computer. How does a person search millions of resumes--by entering search words, of course. You resume should use the same language as the posting for it to show up in the search. Don't lie, just use the same language to describe the same type work. (TACTIC #2) It's easier than you think. Prior to constructing each custom resume, perform research about each company you choose to pursue - this is serious business so organize and get on with the work ASAP and stay focused or you may lose your nerve to complete the tasks - discover the actual names of decision-makers who would approve, or contribute to a decision to, hire for the department or job-title or vocational specialty that you intend to pursue with each employer-prospect. And in your research, as you discover each business' most urgent workplace hiring needs in your job specialty, you discover exactly which of your job skills and industry experiences to use to create a custom resume, and which related employment statistics may best impress each hiring manager. On that same note, you waste time if you are searching multiple job search sites separately. There are a number of computer applications, as well as smart phone apps, that enable you to search all the best career sites at once; with one search. It can take hours to search site #1, then search site #2, then site #3, and so forth.

After carrying out a personal audit of yourself and learning about your career objectives it then becomes necessary to focus your job hunting on specific jobs that matches your interest, work preferences, passion, traits, skills and values. You can use job search engines to locate jobs by using keywords that matches your interests and locations where you prefer to work. Other methods of finding employment includes listing in newspapers, referrals from databases, professional magazines, employment agencies, executive search firms, consulting firms, outsourcing agencies, informal inquiries, mass mailing of resumes etc. Narrowing of search criteria brings about focus of the job search and consequently provides more relevant listings to review and less relevant listings to weed out. Job Search Tip #2: Say nothing. Never talk about being out of work or underemployed. The surest way to never get a job, is to never ask for one. The second surest way to fail a job search is to never mention to people you know that you'd like a job. If you really want to mess up your life, stay in your house and pull the curtains on the world.
Job Search Technique #1: Do nothing, or mostly nothing. Assume that there are no jobs out there, or there are too many qualified candidates to conduct a successful search. Reading newspapers and magazines to get leads: You can also get leads for your job search through reading of newspapers and magazines. You can uncover leads by (i) monitoring the business sections for companies signing new commercial and contracts which portends a good sign for increased capacity. (ii) search for companies receiving venture capital. Such companies are likely to have a viable business model and will inevitably need new employees. It is not all the job openings that are normally advertised. There are some hidden job markets. This is because some recruiters and employers sometimes recruit job seekers that are recommended to them by colleagues, friends and sometimes associates. I personally have once been employed through this means. You should therefore get acquainted with potential employers with a view to having a pre-knowledge of available jobs before they are advertised by developing your contact network. To advertise your availability in the job market, you need to get the names of the professionals in your field. You need to ask faculty, alumni and peers on how to contact such persons. Also, directories, association listings, professional bodies, alumni associations, job search clubs and telephone books are veritable source of such names. To get reliable information about any job listing in any organization the best person to contact is the supervisor or manager of the position you are interested in.

Zowie Broach on the RCA’s Graduate Show and Looking Beyond the Runway – WWD
https://ift.tt/32lZMLn
LONDON — Zowie Broach is cofounder of the avant-garde label Boudicca and head of the fashion MA program at London’s Royal College of Art, the only pure postgraduate art and design university in the world, and alma mater of designers including Ossie Clark, Erdem Moralioglu, Christopher Bailey and Sophia Webster.
Like most of her peers, Broach and other principals at the Royal College had to think quickly — and creatively — about how to showcase graduates’ final projects and get their work under the noses of headhunters, brand managers and other industry professionals in the age of lockdown and social distancing.
Instead of filming the final shows or focusing on the runway, the college came up with the idea of a macro site, where fashion students could strut their creative stuff and showcase their ideas alongside other postgraduate candidates in subjects such as architecture, industrial, graphic and product design, textiles, curation and the fine arts. It is the first time in the RCA’s history that the graduates’ shows will take place entirely online.
Broach also took the opportunity to invite creative movers such as Olafur Eliasson, Andreas Gursky, Edward Enninful, Viktoria Modesta, Gareth Pugh and Carson McColl to curate the students’ work in fashion and across disciplines. The student projects and curated elements will appear on the RCA 2020 site, a “digital discovery” platform that opens to the public on Thursday.
Here, Broach, who oversees 51 fashion students in the two-year program, talks about the creative opportunities that lockdown has generated, the constant cross-fertilization of ideas at the Royal College and the power of collaboration and community in fashion and design.
WWD: Talk to me about the site, and how the Royal College came up with the idea.
Zowie Broach: The college had to move very fast. There was no time to gather thoughts and reflect. The college is responsible for 800 young designers, so it was done at speed — but not without debate around the removal of “the physical,” and all the uncertainties that would bring. The site is quite clean, efficient — and powerful. Visitors can tag and search by words like “femininity,” “sustainability,” or “gender,” so you may come across three fine artists and one fashion student in the journey. It is absolutely what the school should always have offered, and shows what technology can do, in a nanosecond. I think it’s going to have lots of ripples: If someone from a fashion label comes to me, I can just take them to the site, where they’ll have a snapshot of the young designers, their Instagram or their web site. The students will be able to build networks of people and solid connections at a time when we are unsure of what the next five years holds for all of us.
WWD: You’ve invited curators in, and given them freedom to look at fashion as well as the RCA’s other graduate work, too. Why?
Z.B.: This is an opportunity for me to show fashion in a design school, surrounded by all these other disciplines, practices and processes. I love that someone who might look at fashion could also see a common thread, or an answer to a bigger question in innovation, design or engineering.
WWD: What sort of guidance did you give your 51 fashion students, who’d normally be preparing their final year runway shows, about what to create for the web site?
Z.B.: You need to edit and curate, and I think these students have an instinct about what is right for them. What’s really important is never wanting to tell everything to the person you meet the first time. You want to hold back. But [your audience] also has to love you, and you have to find that thing that draws them in. Then you can tell more stories. But you’ve got to know what defines you, what your identity is. It’s the hardest thing to do, to be focused, edited, curated and to show your strengths rather than your weaknesses. I tell them that people need to be drawn into their narrative, their story and that they need to make [their message] very clear.
Equally, so many of these students are not trying to “join” the industry, they’re trying to change the industry and so I think they have to make sure that their question, demand or potential innovation is very identifiable — but also accessible. It can’t feel intimidating, or be hard to understand.
WWD: Did the unconventional format, and having to produce new work quickly, rattle your students at all?
Z.B.: Fashion has always had these deadlines. Traditionally, there was a twice-a-year deadline — and it forces you to have output. It’s not like they can say, “Oh, I’ll do another album in five years.” I think that restriction is positive more than negative. We’ve had this kind of restriction and now, out of necessity, has come something that I feel is incredibly positive.
WWD: What sort of work have the students come up with?
Z.B.: Some of them made films, some made animations. Obviously, they had a body of work that was created in lockdown, and a lot of them taught themselves digital skills in the meantime. As they’ve slowly come out of lockdown in the last few weeks, they’ve begun to shoot pictures, too. Some of them are much more about process, without a final proposition. And it’s important [for brands and the industry] to see the process of a young designer, and what that can potentially weave into a company, how they drape and how their brains work.
WWD: You have long encouraged your students to think of “fashion outside of fashion,” and to look beyond the runway and the showroom when they design. What’s been the result of that?
Z.B.: To me, fashion is about much more than just a product, it is this very important social barometer. It can be political and it can be functional. You have to look at Nike based on the fact that, ultimately, the products are designed for sports people, yet they’ve become a part of our identity and design.
Right now, as we emerge from these last four months, we must not assume we are OK. We have to use every muscle in our body to understand we are still getting things deeply wrong on all sorts of levels. Going forward, I want to ask: “Who are you designing for? Do you really, truly understand that person?” So much also comes from students, and they can help you learn, too.
I also think we need to be more nonhierarchical in our creative worlds and understand that potential propositions are a rhythm, that we work in communities, and remember that fashion has always been about collaboration. Within the world of jazz, the musicians have a great trust of each other, bring great people together and they know what they’re doing, but it’s not like [one person is] controlling it. One person might play a bigger role and they might move back, and you come forward. This is not just within fashion, it’s also within the RCA as a whole. I think “team” is an important word going forward. It has to be.
WWD: How are your students thinking beyond the runway?
Z.B.: People look to fashion for beauty, emotionality and function, but I don’t think we’re necessarily using all of our skills the way we should. So some students have been working with their body, with their situation. One has made jumpers [sweaters] for builders, based on where their bodies overheat during the day. The idea is that clothes can protect, but can also look cool. There is the potential of using, in 2020, our knowledge around materiality, its science and what it can do. Right now, it’s not being used. What are we going to do when we move forward? I think fashion has a great energy, a great tenacity and it’s time for us to realize how we can step up and be part of, not just the fantasy, but the expression — although there is still a need for the magical.
WWD: What is the advantage to studying alongside students in other creative programs?
Z.B.: If I look at the tree in the field, what do I see? As a scientist? A biologist? A fashion designer? We all look at it differently. We look at the form, or the texture, the nano level or the quantum level. And I think this is so intriguing about our times, these new ways of working together and colliding our thinking. And I also think good fashion designers don’t look at fashion. They absorb the world around them.
We ran a project for around four weeks, with 400 students across design, textiles, fashion, innovation design, engineering, intelligent mobility and global innovation design. The students looked at the same project, but in a different way. They use different creative languages, but they’re all using Rhino [software for 3-D modeling] and very similar pieces of software. They listened and learned from each other.
WWD: What are your plans for the students going forward? Will there be any physical element to their presentations?
Z.B.: The college has put some money aside, and what that has allowed me to do is make a “sumo” magazine, about 70 or 80 centimeters by 60 centimeters, so it becomes a big time capsule of these guys’ work. I’m going to make maybe 50 of them and was thinking of sending them out internationally, to Shanghai, Sweden and Spain. I’ll look at where all my students live. Next February, where we would normally do a work-in-progress
This slideshow could not be started. Try refreshing the page or viewing it in another browser.
, the magazine will be a way to bring people into a physical space. I will collect all the assets, all the things in between — all the funny moments — as well as their work. I’m aiming for February. This was my instinct, and I’m really happy we’re doing it.

CLAPTON, ERIC
Before we get started, I should probably mention that it might be helpful to regard this piece as sort of a “to be continued…” affair. A handful of entries from now, the subject on my docket will be Cream, whose work is such a vital part of Eric Clapton’s canon than any appraisal of them will unavoidably qualify as a supplemental appraisal of him. I’m sure I will have some nice things to say about Cream since I think they were a pretty excellent band (although time will tell… as you’ve surely gleaned by now, these essays often encompass topics that have absolutely nothing to do with the artists I profess to be evaluating; I can’t predict where my mind will be when I get around to writing about Cream, so it’s entirely possible I’ll end up writing about Mork & Mindy or something instead). However, for our purposes here, I think it will serve us better if I focus exclusively on Clapton’s work as a solo artist. Which is likely to engender a far different climate than the forthcoming Cream-slash-Mork-slash-Mindy piece since I think 85% of the music Eric Clapton made after Cream disbanded is dreadfully fucking lackluster.
When I was learning to play guitar as a teenager, there were several monthly magazines devoted to that pursuit, all of which I perused religiously. (For the benefit of any millennials reading this: “magazines” were similar to books, except they were shorter and usually had more pictures in them—and “books” were similar to the missives your hyper-dramatic friends constantly post on Facebook, except they took a little bit longer to read, were written with proper grammar, and the stories in them weren’t all a bunch of histrionic bullshit—also, “grammar” refers to the coherent presentation of words that aren’t abbreviated or misspelled).
Much like any periodical dedicated to a singular subject, magazines like Guitar World regularly featured articles which graded the luminaries in their particular field—in GW’s case, these usually took the form of arbitrary ranking reports on “The 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time!”. I assume modern publications still rely on similarly banal and undemanding space-fillers: “The 10 Most Lethal Armor-Piercing Shells!” in Guns & Ammo, perhaps, or “The 4 Hottest Members Of  5 Seconds Of Summer!” in NAMBLA Monthly (for the benefit of any tweens reading this: if you ever encounter anyone who subscribes to this magazine, get out of their van immediately).
Of course, discerning readers must surely recognize the flaws inherent in any classification system which surveys qualifications that are subject to myriad personal tastes and biases—in other words, lists like those are completely goddamn meaningless (after all, designating any member of 5SOS as the hottest is utter lunacy; who could possibly make a firm decision between such dreamy candidates with any degree of certainty?). In the post-internet world, such items would qualify as your basic gratuitous clickbait. Yet at the time, I scrutinized those rankings with great interest, and I even took an undue amount of pride in finding some of my favorite guitarists logged at prominent positions on the docket—whenever Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil cracked the Top-20, I figured maybe the editors who put that particular list together actually knew their shit.
The cast of musicians who regularly occupied the apex slots in these polls never changed all that much—it seems to be universally agreed among everyone who reads magazines like Guitar World that the greatest player of all time is either Eddie Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix, which is a verdict I don’t have a strong argument against. Jimmy Page was usually ranked around #3 or so, and I never had any problem with that either because he’s Jimmy fucking Page. The rest of the Top-10 was a bit more fluid, with different architects wandering in and out of contention based on what was happening in their contemporary careers when the list was published. A few guitarists were ubiquitous placeholders who merely shifted numbers from year to year, like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, who seemed to always be classed in the Top-10 despite neither of them ever recording a single piece of music I would listen to on purpose.
Another omnipresent figure on these rosters was Eric Clapton, who was perpetually enumerated in the uppermost echelons of the guitar-god hierarchy, sometimes even slotted way up in the Top-5. A recent poll on ranker.com with 500-thousand tallied voters escalated the matter by rating Clapton as the THIRD greatest axe-wielder of all time, just below Jimi and Jimmy. And despite my cognizance that these standings are fundamentally inconsequential, the net result of Slowhand’s recurrent designation as one the most prodigious craftsmen in the history of his art-form is that for my entire life I have been systematically instructed to distinguish Eric Clapton as one of the greatest musicians of all time. Which is an assertion that rings as patently incorrect when you actually listen to his music.
There’s nothing incendiary about Clapton’s guitar playing, nothing particularly inimitable about his style. He didn’t develop a new musical language for his instrument to sing with—Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and Jimmy Page all did that, but not Slowhand. The two main things Eric Clapton did exceptionally well were splicing a strain of safe white-boy blues into a strain of nonthreatening AOR rock and building the bulk of his career on serviceable renditions of songs written by other people. Whether this particular musical aesthetic appeals to you is irrelevant; no matter how much you like his version of “I Shot the Sheriff”, a modest benchmark like that is not indicative of genius, it is merely indicative of a seasoned session musician plying his trade. Make no mistake, Clapton is a very good guitar player, and I get the sense he’s a nice enough dude. Nevertheless, while the ability to knock out solid cover tunes might curry plenty of favor on Tequila Tuesday at the local dive bar, that skillset alone does not signify any form of virtuosity.
Timepieces—the 7x Platinum-selling 1982 greatest hits album most likely to represent Eric Clapton in the collections of casual fans—features ten songs culled from his 1970’s harvest, the most acclaimed era of his solo career. Of those ten tracks, Clapton is only credited as a songwriter on three cuts, and only one amidst that trio names him as the sole songwriter. This seems to reveal that out of all the most enduring tunes he released during his most enduring era, this musician alleged to be among the greatest of all time was only able to piece together one outstanding song when left to his own devices. Sure, “Cocaine” and “Layla” are fairly strong by any standards (although, Clapton didn’t write the former and merely co-wrote the latter), but the rest of Timepieces is notably unremarkable as far as best-of showcases go—unless the one major thing your life has been missing is the opportunity to hear Eric Clapton tackle the novelty number “Willie and the Hand Jive” like he was submitting it for the opening credits of a sitcom.
Then there’s the knotty matter of “Wonderful Tonight”, the only song on Timepieces credited singularly to Clapton—and, arguably, the only one of his solo period creations that has prevailed in a comprehensive cultural sense. You won’t meet too many wedding DJ’s who don’t have “Wonderful Tonight” in their arsenal, and I’m positive plenty of couples have selected the track to accompany their first dance at the reception. The tune has been widely appropriated as a naked avowal of love and devotion—and, hey, why not? Is there any woman in the world who doesn’t appreciate being told she’s wonderful?
However, sometimes songs get borrowed for things that don’t necessarily match up with their essence. Consider Green Day’s “Time of Your Life”, which will probably be played over every high school graduation slideshow in the civilized world for the next several decades because of its lyrics about turning points and forks stuck in the road—this, despite the fact that the proper title of the song is “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” and the refrain “I hope you had the time of your life” was actually penned as a derisive fuck-you aimed at an ex-girlfriend who jilted Billie Joe Armstrong. In some cases, the intended meaning of a tune doesn’t really matter; once it becomes transcendently popular, it means whatever the people who made it transcendently popular want it to mean. And before you know it, teenagers are dancing to a song about a bitter break-up at their senior proms without any apperception of irony.
This is why I’ve always been fascinated by the quixotic ideals that have been ascribed to “Wonderful Tonight”. Though the swooning masses have evidently chosen to accept that song as a chronicle of the profound romance nurtured by two lovers throughout a night on the town, to me the lyrics tell a far different story.
My sad tale is about a woman fretting woefully as she dolls herself up to attend a party with her carping husband, nervously asking him, “do I look alright?” She’s well aware that to this imperious man, her physical attractiveness is her primary asset; he regards her as a prop, an arm-candy accessory that buttresses his inflated sense of prestige. When the couple arrives at the gala, the caddish groom basks in the attention of the numerous leering men who crane their necks to look at his trophy (“everyone turns to see this beautiful lady that’s walking around with me”). Each swiveling head substantiates his ego, confirms that he is a superior alpha-male because he has managed to ensnare such a stunning female specimen—“I feel wonderful tonight,” he tells her, and this declaration might as well be a cackle of triumph.
His supremacy established, he then proceeds to get absolutely shit-faced. The song doesn’t specify whether his recreation of choice is alcoholic or narcotic or both, only that by the time he’s finished indulging in his spree of hedonistic rapture he’s “got an aching head.” The brevity of the account doesn’t allow a verse which elaborates on his conduct at the festivity, but we can reasonably assume this sort of character becomes a boorish lout when he’s intoxicated—just imagine the undignified behaviors a man like that adopts under the influence while his unfortunate wife helplessly watches on, mortified; perhaps Clapton is being kind by sparing us that part of the saga.
When the bender is over, he is too wasted to drive, so the onus of shuttling him home falls upon his submissive mate. And she is further demeaned when she has to then assist him as he staggers to bed. There, just before slipping into black-out unconsciousness, he slurs to her, “you were wonderful tonight.” A backhanded compliment, surely, reminding her of her place, letting her know that shutting up and looking pretty while he has all the fun is precisely what’s expected of her. “You were wonderful tonight,” he gabbles again, twisting the knife, reiterating that the evening is now over and she will once again curl up on her side of the mattress neglected and unsatisfied and cry herself to sleep while his insensate carcass snores and farts beside her.
[Okay, I made all that shit up. But now that I read the lyrics again, they don’t necessarily contradict my facetious analysis, so the above interpretation might actually be right on the money. Besides, if twelfth graders can slow-dance with their sweethearts to the soundtrack of a disintegrated relationship, then I can make “Wonderful Tonight” be about a doomed and loveless marriage if I want to.]
The other most obvious benchmark in Clapton’s solo catalog is his MTV Unplugged release, which shifted over 26-million copies and still holds the distinction of being the best-selling live album of all time. (For the benefit of any millennials reading this: “Unplugged” was a program that MTV produced during the prehistoric age of their existence, back when they had to lower themselves to airing rubbish like music videos and concerts because there weren’t enough quality reality shows being made about teenagers who have babies and get plastic surgery to fill their broadcast schedule). The network’s marketing strategy for the Unplugged series was actually quite ingenious: in addition to airing hour-long presentations of sets like Clapton’s in prime time, select songs from these shows were earmarked as “singles” and those individual performances were slotted into heavy rotation among the other hit videos of the era, a model which allowed MTV to essentially promote their own albums as frequently as they wanted. Since the channel’s driving ethos at the time was to pummel their audience with constant spins of even the most mediocre clips until viewers decided those songs must be cool because MTV played them all the time, plenty of latently unexceptional offerings like Clapton’s Unplugged were given a ready platform to become smash hits (lest we forget: this approach was so insidiously effective that even Mr. Big and Wilson Phillips achieved Platinum sales figures in 1992).
Hell, even I bought the fucking CD (I never bought those Mr. Big or Wilson Phillips records, though). I’ve listened to Unplugged a couple times while shaping this write-up, and I still have yet to locate a shred (pun possibly intended) of persuasive evidence that Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitar players of all time anywhere on this disc. The revue has a couple of high-points—the version of “Tears in Heaven” here is indubitably definitive and “Layla” fares surprisingly well in a slower, stripped down form—but as a whole the album is an unadulterated slog, laden with an abundance of instantly-forgettable renditions of unessential blues tunes that are reduced to benign dentist-office white noise by the neutered arrangements which were integral to the Unplugged format. What these moments actually demonstrate—rather than Clapton’s mastery—is that a style of song-craft which was initially channeled straight from wounded souls into ragtag instruments doesn’t translate very convincingly to a fleet of $5,000 guitars; in a fundamental sense, Unplugged’s glossy and pristine studio-audience presentation, every chord perfectly EQ’d and in-tune, strips away whatever raw immediacy cuts like Son House’s “Walkin’ Blues” may have possessed in their primal form. I’m not earnestly criticizing Eric Clapton for his professionalism, but since the thrilling quintessence of live music is the anything-can-happen spontaneity of the stage, it’s difficult to get overly invested in the meticulously premediated and pokerfaced routine captured for this specific document.
The album does indeed embody Clapton’s mien—capable musicianship and a batch of songs unlikely to offend anyone’s sensibilities—but the guitarists who truly belong in the realm of the immortals are those whose work sounds like an existential search for deeper sonic truths. The notes they strike broadcast more than chords, they transmit fever and fire, each one eddying uncontainable passion from their hearts to their fingertips. This is why procedural players like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have never been engaging: their main artistic drive has always seemed to be showcasing how many arpeggios they can execute, and the soulless military precision of that execution doesn’t convey any sincere affection for their craft—listening to Satch and Vai et al do their thing is kind of like watching a squad of soldiers marching in lock-step; you get the sense the last thing on those lads’ minds is how pleasant it is to be getting some fresh air. And my reaction to Unplugged is similar: Slowhand’s rigid delivery of tried-and-true fret phrases he can undoubtedly strum in his sleep by now doesn’t rouse much in the way of excitement; since Clapton doesn’t sound like he’s overly interested in challenging himself, he doesn’t challenge me either.
Ironically, at this very moment, my heart is seized by the precise melancholy sensations that are metaphorically denoted as “the blues.” I won’t go into a whole thing about it, but I assure you I am sad as fuck right now. Yet, even though I always seek out music I can relate to in times of pathos, somehow hearing Eric Clapton chirrup about drinking “Malted Milk” isn’t doing a whole lot to make me feel better—hearing Greg Puciato shriek his way through The Dillinger Escape Plan’s tempestuous masterpiece “Farewell, Mona Lisa” might do the trick, but not this shiny and innocuous enactment that would sound equally at home on a Jack Johnson record as it does on Unplugged. And this is usefully underscoring why Clapton’s work is so profoundly dull to me: despite being an artist who has devoted most of his catalog to the blues, a genre whose lyrical dominion deals exclusively in heart-borne emotions, his music doesn’t make me feel a goddamn thing. When I get low like this, I know from experience that I can release some of those negative energies by weeping, or wailing, or screaming my fucking head off. But try as I might, I can’t think of a single occasion when the balm my soul cried out for was twelve tasteful bars in the key of E with some gentle, susurrated crooning on top.
So you 26-million consumers can keep your guitar-hero, and his bubbly acoustic blues, and his songs about rakish men who disgrace their wives at parties. I don’t give a shit if Slowhand is ranked 16 spots higher in Guitar World—fucking give me Kim Thayil any day.

Most Common Myths Surrounding Java Programming
We're headed towards our aim for a SmartNation. The Prospective Main 4 to 6 pupils are now needed to learn computational believing, together with mandatory coding courses pushed out of next coding for kids year onwards. PMETs are invited to volunteer for these actions at our regional libraries and help the country advance digitally, together with one. In case you have a child now in college, do phone and discuss with us your ideas on those new policies.
In the current digital era, what would be the most valuable ability to find? Have you Trapped? On a worldwide scale, how can Singapore rank?
We have invited two experts from the area for the current talk -- Foo Yong
Presently, Singapore is somewhat behind in the colleges' facet because
Coding is a really complicated matter to me. I learned to code through A course at secondary school -- we employed a language named QBasic. I believed that it had been quite hard and gave up after 3 weeks of courses. I believed that it was not required to learn these because I am not likely to be creating software myself later on. Why do I have to know when I could just understand how to use this software?
To put it a different way, coding is similar to learning how to type. It is a basic ability Of the electronic future. Many sorts of jobs require some programming knowledge, and it is increasingly so classes for kids as we proceed farther down the digital route. Henceforth, if you're not familiar with coding, then you might face difficulties at the office and generally.
Since a primary function of schooling is to groom prospective abilities for the Work force, having exposure to coding out of main school is very crucial in the electronic era. Although it's commendable that we're beginning compulsory 10-hour enrichment courses for upper primary pupils, let us hear it out of Coding Laboratory on if it is enough for establishing a base in programming.
I believe that 10-hours are very brief. If You Would like to master coding, then you Would certainly require a whole lot longer time. All these 10 hours of courses tend to be somewhat more to expose the students to the area. By way of instance, it requires 4 years for college graduates to achieve a solid foundation in programming. Mastering coding inside a 10-hour-long enrichment class isn't so realistic.
Yes, it is a Fantastic beginning for more children to Access the miracles of Coding, cultivate an interest in the area, and possibly even subscribe to more courses later on.
: Thus Coding Lab, you appear to be ahead of the match, with coding courses since 4 decades back?
Definitely far more ahead. Do Singapore parents really send their children to coding courses?
Yes, needless to say. computational thinking. We do not learn math or mathematics to only become Likewise, the advantages of Learning How to code, Especially computational believing, goes beyond computers and will give Your kid an edge over the others in the Wikipedia Programming long run. Computational thinking is Around us For instance, they are found in company procedures. They're also Used in finance, in which computer applications revolutionize methods of calculation and management.

How To Deal With Fraudulent Online Reviews
Fake reviews can affect everyone. Whether you’re an online entrepreneur looking to launch an ecommerce business, or a consumer searching for a nice restaurant, deceptive and deceitful appraisals muddy the waters. And although fraudulent comments have been around since time immemorial, the internet amplifies them in real time to a global audience. Spotting false reviews as a consumer As consumers, we’re increasingly reliant on peer opinions when choosing products or selecting service providers. But while we might imagine ourselves to be budding Sherlocks able to effortlessly separate fact and fiction, studies suggest that consumers correctly identify fake reviews less than half of the time. In one notable test last year, a team of graduates would have scored a higher hit rate if they’d flipped coins to decide whether comments were authentic or not. Below are some of the things to look out for when trying to identify fraudulent online reviews: #1. Lots of posts from people with no account history. This is a classic giveaway on aggregator and review portals. Why would someone create a profile purely to write a single post about one business or experience? Brand new profiles are equally suspect. #2. A lack of specifics. Bogus commentators have rarely experienced the product, place or people they claim to. As a result, they won’t be able to describe things in detail. A made-up restaurant review won’t mention portion sizes, waiting times or food flavors. #3. Poor spelling and grammar. This might seem unfair on those for whom English is not their native language. However, many false posts are penned by overseas copy farms, while others are hastily written to meet a goal. Approach poorly-written reviews skeptically. #4. The over-use of verbs. Minimum word counts mean one-sentence critiques are often frowned upon. Fake posts might be filled with irrelevant verbs, rather than descriptive nouns which reflect the consumer’s experience (probably because it never happened). #5. First-person perspective. Another way of bulking up a word count is to add meaningless preamble. “I decided to come here to celebrate a special occasion since we were in the neighborhood” adds nothing, other than extra words. #6. Similarities between comments. One restaurant in Scotland briefly managed to rig TripAdvisor to become the second-best eatery in Glasgow, even though almost every (five-star) review was written in the same staccato English with near-identical terms. Spotting fake online reviews as a business So much for the consumer perspective – now what about business owners? How can you identify whether the latest Google review or Yelp critique is sincere or bogus? #1. Descriptions of a mysterious transaction. This may be difficult to spot if every customer receives identical treatment. However, you should know whether or not a first-time client ordered ten items last week, and immediately returned seven of them. #2. An unrecognizable description of something which actually happened. Sure, Mrs. Smith placed an online order last week. But did the overnight dispatch of 25 paper napkins really “ruin their birthday”, and become “the worst customer service ever”? #3. An absence of names and contact details. Maybe the customer is embarrassed to reveal their real name. Any review posted anonymously should be treated with great suspicion. The internet isn’t renowned for secretive people behaving honorably. #4. A sudden influx of one-star reviews. Have those solid fours suddenly collapsed? If so, you could be under assault from a rival business, roping in friends and family as amateur trolls. This drags down average scores and looks bad until addressed. Reacting to fraudulent online reviews Although the internet never forgets, false comments shouldn’t clog up a profile for all time. If you’ve identified suspicious activity on a third-party site like TripAdvisor, look for a complaints portal or customer service address. Support is often patchy (Facebook is notorious for ignoring assistance requests), but it’s a good starting point. There may be Report Review or Policy Violation flags. Google carries automated forms for reporting suspicious behavior, and it’s also possible to reach out via the Google My Business dashboard. If you’re able to respond to other people’s statements, issue a polite but strenuous denial. Use phrases like “we can’t find a record of this transaction”, to sow seeds of doubt in the minds of people reading. The troll (and their account) may be long gone, but your reputation remains at stake. Remember the host website doesn’t want its pages cluttered with bogus material, so it’s in their interests to respond timeously. They might investigate the account and discover that the user has trolled other companies in different industries. The result? A ban, and the deletion of everything they’d posted. Turn negatives into positives by discussing recent problems with negative reviews on social media platforms. It reiterates the point that third-party opinions shouldn’t automatically be trusted. It also demonstrates that you’re a real person protecting a genuine reputation – and few things encourage prospective clients to hand over their hard-earned dollars more than knowing how much a firm cares. Finally, why not promise “dissatisfied customers” a 100% refund? They clearly can’t accept the offer, but it’ll look extremely generous to everyone else… Preventing false evaluations Perhaps the ultimate protection against bogus comments is to stop them in the first place. Restrict invitations to review your business to established clients, capable of supplying proof of purchase. Clearly stipulate that every comment will be replied to, and ask dubious reviewers to prove their authenticity. Robust responses show prospective customers you’re disputing a particular portrayal of events, and it’ll hopefully deter future smears or attacks. Plus, it’s good housekeeping to respond to every online comment – positive or negative. If there’s an FAQs page, add a question like “Are our customer reviews genuine?”, followed by a brief answer explaining how they’re all scrutinized for authenticity. Finally, eliminate contact forms, which attract copious amounts of spam and also provide a potential gateway for hackers to penetrate your site. A clickable email link ought to suffice for anyone wishing to make an inquiry. Partner with a web host with the tools, services and know-how to make your web hosting endeavors a success. This Fashion Designer Turned School Teacher Has Created A Particular Time Table For Students
A classroom in Vidyaniketan School Chennai, transformed into a style show. His pupils split into groups of models, choreographers and designers, and shot them. However, why bring fashion into the classroom?
After graduating from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Nathaniel spent three years in the fashion market. As he moved from designing clothing to providing creative direction and style forecasting to brands, his interest shifted to procedure style. Mulling over chasing his Masters, Nathaniel chose to try his hand. “I had been taking a break, so that I applied for the Fellowship. Because how I looked at it, instructing was a process. If I didn’t like teaching the plan was to get back to my own Pros and design. However, I fell in love with all the work that happens here and the creativity and design that takes place at Teach For India,” he says. “Design has got a great deal to do with difficulty. We are educated to reach the best solution given the constraints. At Beloved For India, I had a lot of kids, we had a lot of problems to solve, and it had been all about thinking seriously and being imaginative,” he states farther.
During the summer gap between both years of the Fellowship, Nathaniel was a resident volunteer at the sadhana woods in Auroville. Apart from taking up environmental protection activities at the book, the volunteers spent four hours on weekends with children practising a technique known as ‘unschooling’. “The kids were given practical, hands-on expertise with the surroundings. A few days they had been instructed to grow pineapples or take care of baby rats! In addition we had sessions to talk about topics such as politics, to encourage an exchange of ideas,” explains Nathaniel.
His experiences at Sadhana and in the mainstream schooling system formed his vision of creating a legitimate middle-ground by choosing the quality of schooling to the scale at which mainstream schooling is functioning now. After his Fellowship ended in 2015, Nathaniel spent six months as the Chennai City Coordinator at Youth For Seva, an organisation that mobilizes volunteers in health, sanitation, education, environmental protection and women’s rights. “I realized that each sector is massive and has multiple battles to fight. So I decided to focus on schooling. I felt like we could impact all these other sectors via schooling,” he says.
In January 2016, he has been there for the past year and a half and moved back to use Vidyaniketandozen. Early on from his Fellowship, Nathaniel had begun to understand that the schooling system was not broken as it had been lopsided. “There were kids in my group who had been academically inclined — ones who have been great with numbers, or languages, or at memorising things; and the system catered to them pretty well. However, I felt like there were these other kids, with all different skill sets, that the system just refused to watch,” he explains.
It was this imbalance that fix and he went back to try. After conducting research, he discovered that ability exists in 3 pools — both artistic, academic and athletic. “The reason academics is taken so seriously is because it is evaluated,” he says. His objective is to move towards a system — one at which 3 pools help spot possible, be evaluated and might be at level.
That is, obviously, a complex job. It was at this time the Nathaniel came across RASA: an organisation in Chennai that functions with special-needs individuals through theater. He collaborated with RASA to devise an evaluation rubric, dividing each pool to. The arts have been categorised into drama, visual arts, music, and movement. “With music, for instance, we broke it down torhythm, speed, shape, and other elements. We analyzed each aspect to find out the student’s ability.” The school conducted this pilot program to get its fifth and fourth grades, and explained to the parents that their kids are getting three report cards annually — one each for academics, athletics, and the arts. “We wanted the parents to understand that their son or daughter should not wind up getting a poor engineer when he could have become an excellent something-else!” Says Nathaniel.
He managed to reschedule the pupils’ timetables to be able to devote more time to athletics and arts. He considers that“to your system to be truly honest, we have to work towards exposing youngsters the exact same or similar amount to athletics and arts as they were to academics.”
The goal of his job would be to create rubrics that they focus on, produce more transparent assessment procedures, and design a solid arts program in consultation. Through this initiative, they aim at providing aid to artists who want to educate. Orchestrating such change was not an easy task. “My biggest strength is ideation and planning, and that I feel as the Fellowship contributed a great deal for this,” says Nathaniel. “My execution was comparatively pathetic. I’ve now begun to appreciate the people around me; I realized that I couldn’t do all of this alone.”
This soul of collective activity is what’s helping Nathaniel and others like him function to provide every child an opportunity!

The Benefits of Having a Diverse Workforce
Most of us would like to think of ourselves as being open minded, respectful of other cultures, points of views and life styles.  But do we really proactively strive to emerge ourselves in foreign knowledge?   Do we see the benefits of becoming friends with people that are from completely different backgrounds in the workplace (and outside of it), or do we gravitate towards those that look, think and speak similarly to us?  Do organizations really understand the benefits (and shortfalls) of having diversity in the workplace?  Scholars have written numerous articles and have even operationalized racism and prejudice (against not only race, nationality, gender and religion, but also against sexual orientation) by developing scales and surveying hundreds of subjects.  Most of the articles I researched still suggest we are far from an ideal society where we can all look beyond the color of our skins, the root of our religious beliefs, beyond our birth places and whom we choose to love and share our lives with. I still think results of such studies are skewed and the reality is much more eerie than most of us would like to admit because it is hard to answer these questions accurately - the truth of the matter is that there is a significant disconnect between what people say they think and do, and what theyreally think and do, making answers to such studies biased.  And that disconnect makes it impossible to gauge how open to diversity we really are as individuals.
However, on a corporate level, we can look at data to try to understand where we are at in terms of diversity in the workplace.  According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics in the last 3 decades the white civilian workforce has remained relatively stable with a slight projected decrease in 2020, whereas non-white workers have shown a steady growth and represents a larger percentage of the workforce. Of course this trend is due to the same trends in the growth of the general population, which directly influences the numbers of the civilian workforce. And the reason for this upward trend in non-white residents (and therefore, workers) is largely due to the fact that the USA is in essence made up of immigrants.  “Immigration has a major role in the growth and makeup of the racial and ethnic composition of the U.S. resident population. Every race and ethnicity is projected to grow over the 2010–2020 period. However, the share of White non-Hispanics in the total resident population is expected to decrease.” (BLS Monthly Labor Review • January 2012).   This data indicates that we are moving in the direction of not only a more diverse workforce, but also a more diverse population in general.  Therefore, it is important to look deeper into the benefits of having diversity in the workplace.
Fostering diversity offers many benefits to corporations. Forget thinking outside of the box, in a diverse workforce, some of the employees may have a difficult time even seeing a box to begin with, because they bring insight from across the globe that could prove to be innovative in nature. When having a diverse workforce, corporations have access to a much larger pool of creative solutions to problems. Each employee may have unique talents and experiences, bringing the organization to new heights in terms of flexibility and adaptability to various customer’s demands.
As Ordyx’s (a technology company located in Boca Raton, FL) co-founder David Marrero explains:
“Ordyx works with customers with very diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. As a result of the diversity within the company, we are able to use the backgrounds of our own staff to help us better understand and service our customers. Understanding our customers allows our staff to better suggest to them an Ordyx configuration that best matches their preferences. An example would be the effective use of the language skills in Ordyx. Having recently signed our first customer in Panama, we have had to integrate Ordyx with the local fiscal printing required by the government in Panama. Having assigned a Spanish speaker software developer has made the interaction with the local contacts in Panama that much easier. The effective interaction has allowed us to speed up the development efforts related to the integration.”
Ordyx is a prime example of a company that fully understands the benefits of having a diverse workforce and capitalizes on this competitive advantage to gain market share, increase efficiency and achieve superior customer service.  The company was founded by a Dutch computer programmer and a Puerto Rican MBA graduate, and signed its first customer in 2004.  They have grown tremendously since then, always having a solid vision that diversity would help them stay in the cutting edge of technology. Ordyx was one of the first Point of Sell companies (POS) to offer cloud-based POS services to hospitality establishments in the USA - an innovative idea at the time that now has become industry standard. Today, Ordyx employs 20 people, from 10 different nationalities and remains on the leading edge of their industry thanks to the forward thinking mentality of the entire organization.
When asked about how they achieved such a high level of diversity in their organization, David Marrero, once again explained: “Diversity at Ordyx has been a byproduct of both South Florida's melting pot as well as the founders' previous experiences and backgrounds. Coming from such diverse places as The Netherlands and Puerto Rico gave Remon and I a deep understanding of the advantages that different points of views or starting points can provide. In addition to that, having worked in international projects with countries as diverse as US, Mexico, Israel, Taiwan, etc provided a deep understanding of how to work and maximize the value of a diverse team. Therefore, we try to be as open-minded as possible in our recruiting efforts in terms of gender, age, nationality and backgrounds.  What we look for is the right attitude that will fit in with our corporate culture, and then we provide the training to create excellence in the workplace.”
Another great benefit of having a diverse workplace is that it increases job satisfaction and customer satisfaction simultaneously.  In a 2013 article published by Harvard Business Review, 24 CEO’s from highly successful global companies that are known for embracing diversity (such as Avon,  IKEA and Bank of America) were interviewed and the pervasive message is that diversity not only contributes to creativity and innovation, but also to a more satisfied workforce as well as a more satisfied customer base. “A diverse workforce also prevents an organization from becoming too insular and out of touch with its increasingly heterogeneous customer base. Many of the CEOs asserted that it is crucial for a company’s employees to reflect the people they serve. Brian Moynihan of Bank of America saw an important link to customer satisfaction: ‘When internal diversity and inclusion scores are strong, and employees feel valued, they will serve our customers better, and we’ll be better off as an organization.” (Great Leaders Who Make the Mix Work, by Boris Groysberg and Katherine Connolly, Harvard Business Review, 2013)
Therefore, to all CEOs and high level management out there: Make sure that diversity and inclusiveness is part of your corporate culture and vision.  Only hiring people that you feel comfortable with and that you connect with is a common survival instinct – fight that instinct and you will see a surge in creativity in your organization.  By embracing differences, you will expand the pool of knowledge and skills that are available to you, thus gaining leverage over your competitors. As Stephen R. Covey (an international leadership expert, author, and graduate of Harvard Business School) once said: “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities”
