taking a moment to reflect on the past year!

buff’s 2021 in review:

yet another pandemic year, and it seems like it’s getting scarier by the minute. i miss going to concerts, i miss traveling to conventions near and far, i miss just getting out there. the cabin fever really sucks. we all got vaccinated which is great, and we’re on our way to getting fully boosted as well and so far, thankfully no one in my immediate family has gotten sick 🙏

this was my first full year without working retail, and the change has been scary but good overall! adjusting to working from home and the entire 8-5 sitting-at-a-computer office life has been a challenge, but the pros totally outweigh the cons. i’m making a living wage and i’m not breaking my back or dealing with the public to do it (although i do miss reading a million books and even hauling boxes sometimes…my biceps have suffered 😂). but i’m doing really well at my new job—everyone says i’ve been doing great, and even earned bonuses and a big raise this year already!

we got to go on our yearly beach trip to montauk this year, thankfully! my sister and our friends have gone every year without fail, since 2006. it’s a fantastic tradition that i look forward to every year.

i went to 2 different friends weddings this year! i had an amazing time at both getting to celebrate (carefully) with many of my closest pals. and i won’t even deny that i enjoyed getting dressed up 🤫

i did unexpectedly come back here to tumblr after a 5-ish year absence! after drawing a few s&b fanarts and posting to insta, i was encouraged to post on tumblr to reach more people. And after dusting off this decrepit old place, reach more i did! i honestly can’t believe the community i re-found here (special mention to the heartrender husbands discord! i love all you crazy kids!), encouraging me to draw more than i have in years! still not as much as i’d like to be, but hopefully the ball will keep rolling this year ☺️

special embarrassingly gay shout-out time: i do have the community to thank for putting @qqueenofhades in my path…for jokingly internet-marrying us for being the fandom Olds which slowly turned into “wanna be friends? we actually have so much in common” and morphed to “ummm i might have a crush on you?” “weird because i have a crush on you?” and now she’s stuck with me, neener neener. (and as luck would have it, one of my weddings i attended this year was in the same exact microscopic one horse town on the other side of the country that they live in??? talk about serendipity) we had a very nice weekend of very nice dates in the middle of nowhere. there were alpacas. looking forward to more! (dates, not alpacas.) 💖

on the flip side, there were definitely plenty of downsides to this year as well. in the first week of the year, my younger sister was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo chemo, surgery, and radiation for 9 months. while it was a terrifying time for all of us, she took it all like a champ and was declared cancer-free at the end of september.

unfortunately, as you know, that wasn’t the end of the saga. second week of october was her accident which lead to 7 weeks in the hospital, most of which she was in a coma which they gave her a 0.1% chance of waking up from. but despite those odds, she woke up (on her birthday!) and has been slowly yet confidently making strides every single day. she’s now had nearly 4 weeks in a rehab hospital close to home to get her back to her old self, and another 4 ahead of her. it’s great visiting her and seeing her progress and just hanging out cracking jokes with her again. we were so so sure for a while that she wasn’t going to make it so i’m grateful to have her back, and i’ll be even more excited to have her home again. our pets miss her so much! plus, we have 2 years of rescheduled conventions to work on 😂

i did have a major loss to deal with in the middle of all of this. on the week of thanksgiving, i had to make the impossible decision to put down my beloved 15 year old soulmate of a cat, starsky. i think about him every day and i miss him like a limb, he was so so special. i’m grateful he gave me, and everyone he met, 15 years of laughs and the happiest of memories.

alright, that must be enough sadness for one year right? cautiously optimistic that 2022 will be better and brighter for me and for all of you!

things to look forward to in 2022:

+ hilary is coming here to visit me for like 10 whole days at the end of january! we have lots of handholding to catch up on 😉 i’m sure she has much more planned for her time in new york but my shortlist is…short and mostly involves being ridiculously cuddly.

+ michelle is also supposed to be out of rehab around the same time so that’s exciting! she has a long road ahead but will be great to have her home again.

+ tentative return of conventions…? we had a tiny taste at nycc last year which was great but we have had Star Wars Celebration plans since 2019 and it keeps getting pushed back…can’t wait to get back out there! we also tentatively have star trek missions in chicago in april (birth…day…con) and fwa in may! fingers crossed we don’t have a 3rd year of cancelled cons 😭

+ more artwork! my sister’s medical crises sort of put a damper on productivity but now that she’s on the mend, i can hopefully train my brain to focus on me. just a little bit, as a treat.

+ getting out there! my goal for 2022 is to finally get my license (i know) and also make use of my newly-minted passport maybe finally?
