Red Hood & the Outlaws: End of an Era
Despite the mixed review N52 Red Hood & the Outlaws received, it had an overarching theme of Jason reconnecting. He reconnected with the Bat family, he reconnected with people in general through Roy Harper and Kori’ander. But behind it all, there was an yearning for what Jason lost. I mean, the image of a sick Jason resting against Bruce does come from N52.
Tumblr media
Indeed, N52 was the height of Jason’s love and desire for Bruce’s approval. When Rebirth started, it looked like Jason was mostly there. He was wearing the Bat symbol, being invited to the Bat cave meetings of the inner circle. His past wasn’t painful anymore and honestly, Jason and Bruce was at an all time high in their relationship at this point in time.
I think the highlight of this period came in Red Hood and the Outlaws #6 when Jason and Bruce just hung out together and ate a burger. This is the happiest and the most relaxed we have seen them in a long time and as it turned out, this was close to the peak if not the peak!
Tumblr media
After this point the Red Hood comics took an interesting turn. At first it was just learning a bit about Artemis’s past and then securing Bizarro’s future. But the wheels started coming off as Jason started to refocus on his past. At the same time, we had Bizarro act to keep Jason from knowledge of his past and get hints that Artemis might have had a hand in Jason’s suffering. But the big kick came from Jason getting angry at Penguin for making his dad the fall guy for his crimes and thus breaking his promise to Batman that he wouldn’t kill. So now we are here,
Tumblr media
Whatever I think of Batman’s actions, I have to admit that this was a cool panel with layers of meaning. The most obvious because Jason is literally getting kicked out of the Bat family. But now what? What’s next?
Two things, first Jason does have a support structure independent of the Bat family. That comes to play when Roy Harper shows up at the end of Red Hood and the Outlaws Issue #25.
Tumblr media
Now I don’t think Roy is going to rejoin the Outlaws. I never really got how Roy or Kori were “outlaws” except that they were okay with being a bit morally grey. But it is important that when Jason gets kicked out of the Bat family, he has a member of his found family come in to help him up. To be clear, Bat family is NOT a found/chosen family. The differentiation lies in the fact that Jason is Bruce’s legally adopted son. I don’t remember if that was retconned but in the very least, Jason was Bruce’s foster son. In this case, the paper does make a difference. But Roy, Artemis and Bizarro are connected to Jason purely through emotions. They love each other.
But wait! Jason has blood relations!
Tumblr media
So now what? What is going to happen to Outlaws going forward? I think its clear that DC editorial wants Jason out of the Bat family. But does that mean going forward Jason will be about his blood family? Or will his father and grandfather atone for their failure in someway before disappearing from Jason’s life? Or will everything lead Jason back to Bruce/Batman and the Bat family? It’ll be years before we know but I am looking forward to it more then I thought I would be.
