actually i had a different point in mind for the previous post but i lost it on the way. my point--idea?--theory?--was that john isn’t actually all that different from the other lyctors/lyctor candidates. his relationship with earth (not alecto, though) is the same, or at least a variant on the same theme, as the other lyctors with their cavaliers. the love in tlt is so possessive, so codependent. i thought that already when i’d only got through most of gideon. the relationships are consuming. they chew up their component parts into a joined mush, or they want to so much that it’s an effort to prevent it.
and john was first and he had that with earth. and genuinely. i think if somebody placed many of the lyctors in the same situation, they’d also lash out with all they had to avenge their cavaliers. otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to become lyctors. the difference is, john had so much more power to put into his revenge quest. and that doesn’t, of course, excuse it or make it somehow not petty and counterproductively vengeful. but it means something, i think, that john is not actually meaningfully apart.
