It is quite the irony that in his youth and at his prime, he first found such notions to be silly and useless but as time passed and demands changed, he began to see the advantage and prudence of those same two sayings that he took for granted and oh-so lightly - how foolish of him to ignore a great convenience!

So a smile for the authorities, for the numerous circles and factions of varied societies, for the common man and his fellows, for the genteel ladies and fair maidens, for the children of the streets and on the slums, and most of all, a smile for a family most dear - after all, isn’t a new craft better honed and practiced on the people who are said to be the closest to you?

— he learns of love through slow steps, and she allows herself to be led by his pace. - the ace of hearts/alice the second.

i. 

He frequently wakes around the time when the dim of the night begins to creep away from the windows as the light of dawn approaches - for years he's opened his eyes lying down in a bed too large for only his frame to occupy, a single spot warm and the rest that surrounds him an unfriendly cold, but - 

She makes sharing a bed seem so simple, with how her body just eases itself into the mattress that isn't hers and clings to the sheets that aren't branded with her scent. It's strange that her sole presence makes the bed feel just right, with what was perceived as too large suddenly becoming fit enough for two and the long lingering cold now chased away by a comforting heat.

She never sleeps too far from where he would be, and the hands they’ve linked together before drifting off to sleep haven’t let go of each other yet either. The hold was now loose enough for their fingers to slip away, but he could still feel the warmth of her skin mingling with his - she was still holding on, and not letting go anytime soon.

Today, she was curled up with her head lying close to his chest, explaining why strands of her blonde hair have found their way up to his face to maybe tickle his nose or edge dangerously close to his mouth. He brushes them aside carefully with his free hand, along with the locks that curtain a part of her face from his eyes.

It’s similar to clockwork, how he’d always wake up earlier than her or Rico - maybe this was starting to become clockwork too, how he’d spend just a few minutes studying her sleeping face before getting up from bed.

The slight furrow of her eyebrows, the natural curl of her eyelashes. The curve of her neck, jaw, and cheekbones. The shape of her nose, the slight flush dusting over her cheeks.

The curves of her slightly parted lips.

He stares at her every single day, every single morning.

And every single day, he would always give in - his lips would land on her forehead, gesture as light and tender as the words he would whisper onto her hair, three words connected so solemnly like a vow -

One day, she muses out loud that he owes her a dance.

And maybe he does: the word dance makes him recall a faint moonlight night shining down a grand ballroom with its four wide corners lighted up brightly by a crystal chandelier, walls decorated with exquisite tapestries and fine paintings, gentle serenades brought to life through the efforts of an orchestra.

And there in the center of it all would she stand, dressed in the ensemble he had bought for her: the various orange hues of fabric are bright but are never enough to outshine the glow of what bare skin she exposed, the sparkle of complementary jewelry forgotten in favor of looking into the gleam of kind eyes that reflect the blue of the sea.

He can’t possibly recreate that night, not even if he had the power of magic by his side. But the more he stares at her, the more he immerses himself in musing how nice it would be to hold her close and together they would sway to some tune, never mind the fact that he suspects himself of having two left feet.

He’s made up his mind come a lazy afternoon - each stride he takes through the corridors is hurried, even more so when he finally spots her tending to the rosebushes in the gardens.

Ever so sensitive to his presence, she turns around just in time to hear him call her name.

The moonlight - the full moon’s light - shines brighter than ever, beams of gentle silver streaming down and transforming the Lake of Tears’ waters into a glittering sight to behold.

There are no four tall walls to create an enclosed space - untamed, only nature and the sky were present and together they made a tranquil audience: trees of varied ages and extending branches, patches of overgrowth and clumps of shrubbery, flowing waters, and a multitude of twinkling stars could keep secrets. Animals that lingered around the area could certainly do the same, too. 

In the deep of night there was little to no sound to be heard but only the scrunch of grass as it’s pressed on by their feet: the sound makes for no gentle serenade and neither does the occasional chirp of insects in the woods, but still -

- he leads her into a dance that he’s glimpsed many men do before but never has he tried to perform on his own, the hand on her waist and the hand wrapped around hers steady but the rest of his body quite unsure: his shoulders and torso are a bit too stiff, his legs are awkward and hesitant as his feet are much too careful with each step he tries to perform.

And what does she do? She laughs - she laughs a kind, merry tune as she is led into following the steps of a clumsy dance that contrasts with the elegance of her gown, the lengthy fabrics brushing against grass and earth each mistake they would make. The stains on her gown or the number of times they’ve nearly stumbled don’t bother her in the slightest, but all that matters to her in this moment - in this night of the full moon - is his earnest effort to complete one dance with her, staying true to the promise he made with her earlier.

A bubbling happiness threatens to flood her body and make her float away, but this dance - perhaps a most odd rendition of a waltz she’s ever performed in her life - keeps her grounded, her heart feeling like another sure step closer to his own.
