Iran as a confluence of cultures and what life must be like in present Iran.
Iran, a mountainous, arid, and ethnically diverse country of southwestern Asia, neighboring several countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is a culturally diverse society, where the predominant ethnic and cultural group in the country consists of Persians. The ethnic minorities, which takes up a meager 2.2% of the population include the Kurds,  Azerbaijanians, and Jews (Semites). The majority of Iranians are Muslims. The Iranian culture places a large emphasis on relationships, such as loyalty towards one’s family, where it is common for a family to be prioritized over all else, even businesses. For example, it is taboo to ask questions about one’s females relatives in Iran. Moreover, nepotism is favored in Iran, and companies are often passed down within the family.
Life is Iran varies greatly from one individual to another, especially when it comes to the difference in treatment between women and men in Iran. It is a common fact that women in Iran are heavily oppressed, stripped of their basic human rights in such a patriarchal society. An infamous example could be the ‘triple talaq’,  which allows a husband to divorce his wife by repeating the word "talaq" (divorce) three times in any form, including email or text message. Although such discrimination has been banned, there are still many other factors in Iran that clearly shows the unfair treatment to the female sex, such as the acceptance of polygamy, as well as the countless restrictions on women: they cannot get a job or pursue a profession in the same way a man can; they cannot be ensured of equal pay for equal work, and there are no laws to restrain gender discrimination in hiring. However, with the influence of more liberal cultures over the course of time, many women have risen up and made a stand, in a bid to challenge such discrimination.  Protests such as the 'Daughters of the Revolution.' and #whitewednesdays on social media are one of the many attempts at seeking fairness between the two genders. Indeed, discrimination against women has been alleviated compared to the past, yet it is still disheartening to see that such social stigmas are prevalent in the Iranian culture of today.
