Elon Musk, Twitter’s most important shitposter, has officially added the company to his business empire after months of legal skirmishes,according to CNBC,The Washington Post. and Insider. The deal has closed, according to those three outlets, though The New York Times says the deal’s status is unclear.

Musk’s first move on Thursday was to oust Parag Agrawal, who was Twitter’s last CEO as a public company. CFO Ned Segal and Vijaya Gadde, the company’s policy chief whom Musk had publicly criticized have also reportedly left the building. Sean Edgett, the general counsel, is also gone, The New York Times reports, adding that at least one of these executives was walked out by security. Musk has been meeting with Twitter employees this week and is expected to address them on Friday now that his $44 billion takeover is done.

Musk originally offered to buy Twitter in April, then changed his mind and tried to back out in May. Then, he changed his mind again on October 4th, filing a letter with the Securities and Exchange Commission affirming his commitment to the original deal.

Musk was scheduled to be deposed on October 6th and 7th, after having moved his deposition from late September. He announced he’d honor the contract his lawyers negotiated after all just days before the deposition was to take place. That deposition was likely to be uncomfortable; a judge found that Musk likely deleted Signal messages that were relevant to the case. That deposition was delayed as Musk and Twitter worked toward a deal; Musk even received a court order halting proceedings to allow the deal to close by October 28th.

Questions still remain about what Musk plans to do with Twitter now that he owns it, though he’s made a number of public comments. The Washington Post reported that Musk planned to cull 75 percent of Twitter’s employees, citing estimates given to prospective Twitter investors. Musk told Twitter staffers that the 75 percent figure was inaccurate, Bloomberg reported. In Musk’s text messages, provided during discovery to Twitter’s lawyers, he and entrepreneur Jason Calacanis, a friend of his, discussed cutting staff by requiring a return to office.

“Day zero,” Calacanis texted Musk. “Sharpen your blades boys.” Requiring Twitter employees to return to offices would mean 20 percent of the staff would leave voluntarily, Calacanis wrote. Also, Calacanis told Musk, “Twitter CEO is my dream job.”

Twitter also faces challenges to its free speech stance in court, as the Supreme Court agreed to take up two cases that will determine its liability for illegal content.

Musk, who is also CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has suggested he’ll change the way Twitter’s moderation works, potentially relaxing the kinds of policies that saw former President Donald Trump permanently banned from the platform.

Although Musk has said that his Twitter acquisition is “not a way to make money,” he’s reportedly raised ideas for cost cutting and increasing revenue. Governments and corporations could be charged a “slight cost” to use Twitter, and there could be job cuts on the table to improve the company’s bottom line. Some of Twitter’s current employees have criticized Musk’s plans for the platform as “incoherent” and lacking in detail.

More broadly, Musk has talked about using Twitter to create “X, the everything app.” This is a reference to China’s WeChat app, which started life as a messaging platform, but has since grown to encompass multiple businesses, from shopping to payments to gaming. “You basically live on WeChat in China,” Musk told Twitter employees in June. “If we can recreate that with Twitter, we’ll be a great success.”

Revolutionary Girl Utena Episode 3 Liveblog

Join me this week for episode 3: social anxiety, heteronormativity, authenticity, and schools with way too much goddamned money for their own good.

This one starts again with the fairytale framework, which was missing in episode 2. I’m making a note of this because I’m going to keep track of which episodes have this opening and if there are any similarities between them. inb4 ‘this is the episode where Nanami is introduced and that’s why there’s the fairytale since her episodes tend to have that opening

For this episode, I think it’s a combination of things. One is the somewhat obvious answer that we, as an audience, need to be reminded of this backstory. I think that it also speaks to the themes of this episode, though, in reminding us that Utena’s goal is to become a prince. Of course, as we come to find out, both the flashback and the goal of becoming a prince are false ideals, and the brilliance of this show (as I keep saying) is that it outright tells you this from the start, but in a way that makes you want to take it at face value. We will keep this idea in mind throughout this episode -- everything is precariously constructed, there’s a lot going on behind what we actually see, but we’re cued to take it all so earnestly, at face value.

And here we introduce one of Utena’s major concerns for the first arc: Anthy has no friends! We should give her some friends!

On the questions raised last liveblog about whether to take Chu-chu at face value or not, I think that we should take Anthy’s assertion here fairly literally, and this is one of the few times that I think I’m going to advocate taking anything in this show literally. I think that Chu-chu is her friend.

This exchange is interesting to me

Utena asks Anthy to stop calling her “Utena-sama,” and all of Utena’s fangirls call her that, but Utena writes it off as “a joke.” This scene seems to be calling attention to a weird sense of performance going on here. For the fangirls, it may be a joke on the surface level, but there seems to be something more authentic underneath that, especially considering that they all do it and that it seems to be a recurring thing. Oh, and Wakaba exists, of course. I’m not sure if this is Utena wanting to think that the probable actual thirst of the schoolgirls is a joke, or if it’s seen as a joke on all sides but they’re actually quite parched.

With Anthy, this seems almost inverted. Sure, she’s completely serious about being the Rose Bride. But she has no actual respect for Utena at this point, and while on the surface it may seem like she’s being deferential to her fiancee, deep down, she’s simply performing a surface-level role. It’s much more a “joke” to Anthy than it is to the fangirls.

(On a side note, my browser is flagging “fiancee” [the feminine form] as possibly incorrect spelling when I place “her” in front of it, but if I place “his” in front of it, it doesn’t. I get what it’s doing, but it’s still quite the heteronormative spell checker!)

Speaking of heteronormativity

Throughout this series, especially early on, “normal” and “heteronormative” seem to fully converge. Here, Utena wants to be seen as perfectly feminine (despite her clothing choice and fiancee) and as, more importantly, straight. To her, “normal” means “wants a boy rather than a girl.” Yes, there’s shades of “this whole dueling system is weird and I’d rather have a lover I met in an everyday way than someone I accidentally won in a duel” but I feel like the emphasis is placed on the gender of the love object here, and on Utena fitting into a model of heterosexual femininity.

Of course, no one believes her. At least, I don’t. The way to seem “normal” isn’t to parade around in a so-called “boys” uniform and declare your desire to be a prince. Her actions are seriously at odds with her words here.

And then this asshole shows up.

That hair says otherwise, Touga. That’s major character hair right there.

And Utena provides one of her better reaction faces at what has to be one of the worst pick-up lines in anime history.

(Though maybe that joke is more appropriate for the movie, where that’s actually a major plot point)

I wish I could edit out the snippet of video where Touga tries to play with Utena’s hair and she slaps him away and dramatic music plays. Everyone in this series is so extra and I love it.

Oh no! Touga is wearing the ring! We have to go from “this guy is a total fuckboy who deserves to be slapped” to “could this guy be my prince?????” in the span of a few seconds! I guess Utena being the most oblivious character ever is part of her charm, though...

[insert joke about how Touga definitely means it in the biblical sense]

In this Student Council meeting, Miki uses the stopwatch almost right away, after Touga says that Saionji lost again. I think he’s timing when his own line should be. As per last episode, Saionji himself is still not present. Also still no weird antics at the meetings.

Anthy slap count: 3 For those participating in the drinking game ;]

So the latest Anthy rumors are about “what she did to a popular boy” (Saionji), which...middle school rumors often get things wrong, yes, but this is also the role of the Rose Bride. She’s taking on the blame for everything that went wrong, even if Saionji is the one who was an abusive asshole and is now being dramatic and refusing to leave his room.

This does make me think, though...do you know? do you know? Doesn’t that sound like the start of someone about to share some juicy gossip? I wonder how much of the Shadow Girls plays are basically the level of highly allegorical, surrealist rumor, and if we should take them as such?

I am a firm believer in the idea that Nanami is the only other character in this series who has the potential to be a protagonist, only she’s the protagonist of the wrong show (that and she doesn’t interact with the system in the way that Utena does, which is what allows for Utena to make it to the end of the dueling game). (I never said these liveblogs were spoiler-free :P) I think that her introduction here is an indicator of that -- she’s introduced in much the same way as Utena is, only without quite as much pomp and circumstance to her unveiling. There’s a strong visual parallel here, though, and to my memory, the only other character to be given this type of introduction. That is, she’s given the slow tilt up her body, starting at her feet, with the spinning rose frame, much like Utena was. Other characters may have the rose frame, but not that same level of “self-important theme music and the slow reveal of the character” that Nanami is given here. (I know Juri has her very sad theme music mostly used in highly emotional moments, Anthy has theme music but she’s a more major character, Miki sorta has theme music but it’s mostly used in other places...do Touga and Saionji have theme music at all? Do any other side characters have theme music to the level of Nanami? Maybe Nemuro [not Mikage]? It seems as it it plays almost every time there’s something related to her on screen.)

I always go to beat up girls I don’t like with the school’s Forbidden Forest™ in the background.

Actually, I wonder if this is some sort of really weird foreshadowing -- that’s where the dueling arena is, and this is pretty much a cropped (and daylight) version of the shot that opens the Shadow Girl plays for this arc. I’m probably reading too much into it and it’s just a nice, convenient location to get into fights at. You know. In front of the big, ominous forest that all schools have.

The editing and angles in the next scene are nice -- of /course/ Anthy is playing cards with Chu-chu and Utena is just sitting in the corner, stewing. Isn’t this how most friends spend their evenings?

That is exactly the reaction I have to all of the party dresses in this episode.

Utena insisting that Anthy go to the ball and make lots of friends is an interesting moment for me

There’s that fake Anthy smile we all know and love.

I can’t remember my first watchthrough of the series and how I reacted to this particular moment. I wonder how many first-time viewers (who don’t yet realize just how complicated Anthy is) take this response at face-value, and how many realize that Anthy is quite literally obeying orders here, even if Utena didn’t intend it as such?

This scene seems to really align us with Utena’s perspective, though, in wanting Anthy to go and make friends, and having us feel sorry for Anthy for being shy, not for...well, being the Rose Bride and having been abused and tortured her whole life. Utena is trying to make Anthy into that perfectly normal girl that she so desperately wants to be herself, and is coming at this from the perspective of having average problems, not highly symbolic magical problems.

The Shadow Girls play here is a bit obscure. On the surface, it’s about how the ball is just an excuse to catch a man, and how the girls are shameless for wanting to do so, and yet our actors move back and forth between playing the town gossips and actually participating themselves as the prince and princess archetypes. That all seems relatively straightforward -- words not lining up with actions, judging others but having the same desires (even if someone queered by the fact that the prince is one of the same actors as before), setting up what happens between Utena and Anthy as explicitly romantic.

But why are there two dogs? There’s one dog when the SGs are playing the town gossips, and then two dogs when they’re the prince/princess at the ball.

Another question of “just how rich is this school?”: they sure do seem to have a /lot/ of fancy dress parties. No industrial-looking cafeterias or gyms strewn with cheap steamers and girls in JCPenney dresses here. Nah, we have classical music and champagne. I bet the tuxedos the boys are wearing are ones that they own, not even rented.

On the point of the fangirls “joking” about calling her “Utena-sama”: clearly, they’re all /hella/ thirsty. I don’t think they’re joking as much as Utena wants to believe they are.

Yes, Utena. Yes it is.

Besides being one of the best visual representations of social anxiety I’ve ever seen,

this is also something to keep in mind come episode 34. As we get more information about her backstory, this comes to be a surprisingly authentic reliving of trauma for Anthy, and not just a display of anxiety or shyness for its own sake.

I’m actually fascinated by these moments, since they seem to be one of the few places, especially this early on, where we are allowed to see something authentic from Anthy rather than the mask she wears. Of course, we don’t realize it yet. I wonder how much of this is her allowing the mask to come off for a bit, and how much is that her trauma is too difficult at this moment to keep hidden? She does a very good job of hiding it the rest of the time, so it’s interesting that we get this scene. Or is it simply a performance of trauma, and not authentic at all?

Back to shitposting: Yuuko is the only one in the entire goddamned episode who has a passable dress.

I’ve actually looked to see if there’s a fabric that dissolves in alcohol, and the closest I can find is a rare type of rayon that dissolves in a combination of alcohol and...something else, ether maybe? It’s been a while since I’ve looked it up. Still very impractical for a garment, and nothing is going to dissolve that quickly unless that dress was made of rice paper or something.

Though, it’s mostly to give Utena an excuse to act the Prince and save her girlfriend from being humiliated and naked in front of a bunch of strangers.

I love these kinds of early series pranks, though. I feel like as we get further into the series, the whole thing becomes almost like a giant prank somehow (the cars. the cacti. the severe shortage of men wearing shirts.), but all of the problems are very serious and heavy, so it’s interesting to see the early episodes seem to take themselves so seriously and yet all of the problems are things like ��someone spilled wine on someone at a party.”

I would do the [insert obligatory joke about how she was wearing the uniform underneath that dress somehow], but that’s not actually what happened here. She’s not in her school uniform. She had her magical girl transformation.

Of course, this is to visually set up the idea that she’s acting as the prince here. But it begs the question: whose powers cause her transformation to happen? Does this solve the mystery of why only Utena seems to get a transformation, no matter who is in possession of the Rose Bride, if those powers are somehow inherent to Utena, not to Anthy? And if so, what would that mean for the framework of the show?

Cosplay goals: make the tablecloth dress actually out of a tablecloth. Is it possible? No. But I can try.

Actually, the quick change seems to be another magical girl transformation, rather than an actual outfit. ~Suspension of disbelief~ is overrated.

And our main ship is established. Now, for the delicately constructed life of these two to come crumbling down over the course of the next 35 episodes once we learn more.

Soo…AKB48Group Senbatsu Sousenkyo is over 17 June, which is nearly a week ago (with an expected yet frustating results) and not forget to say, with a lot of drama. The most dreadful was the usual-opening-concert cancellation due to heavy rain in Okinawa, where the event are being held.

Senbatsu Sousenkyo (General Election) is an annual events held by AKB48Group which decided members who will participate in upcoming AKB48 single.

Normally, selected members (from now on it will be called Senbatsu) are chosen by management. But once a year, fans are given a chance to votes for their favorite members so that they can rank among the selected members.

Besides 16 Senbatsu members who will sing Main Track of the next single, there will also units consists of 16 members who will sing Coupling Tracks based on what ranks they got in the Election. Eligible members are members from AKB48, their Japanese Sister Group (SKE48, NMB48, HKT48, NGT48, and the newly formed group, STU48), or a Kaigai member (international sister group such as JKT48 in Indonesia and BNK48 in Thailand) whose originally an AKB48 Japanese Group member.

I feel like to comments about the ranking members so you can google their name and hopefully find out their respective awesomeness. This is also a way to know more about AKB48Group members (whose probably has more name than your neighborhood).

The first unit is Upcoming Girls consists of members who ranks #80 to #65. The formats would be Ranks. Name (Group and Team, Number of Votes) They are:

80. Hana Matsuoka (HKT48 Team TII, 15,396)

This is the newly pushed member from HKT48. She was a center (member standing in up-middle front of the formation) for HKT48 8th Single Saikou ka Yo (a fun song, try it), this is a first time she ranks in Election but despite of her push, this is pretty low imo. Still, good for her. She’s still 17 and has plenty times to grow.

79. Aki Toyonaga (HKT48 Kenkyuusei (Research Student), 15,598)

A research student, or a Trainee from HKT48. This is her first election and she already ranks-in. Amazing.

78. Yuki Takahata (SKE48 Team E, 15,804) A 7th generation member, a good start for her.

77. Yuria Kado (NGT48 Kenkyuusei, 15,990)

She wasn’t included in Team NIII and also NGT48 1st Single which was released just recently. So this is very good.

76. Moe Goto (AKB48 Team B, 16,097)

She’s one of my favorite Draftee members. She’s been a member for 4 years now yet just managed to ranks this year. Great!

75. Miyuu Omori (AKB48 Team 4, 16,162)

She’s also one of my favorite member. Too bad her rank down by two than last year.

74. Shinobu Mogi (AKB48 Team K, 16,393)

This is pretty bad. Her rank get down by 27.

73. Yui Hiwatashi (AKB48 Team A, 16,492)

She’s one of the ‘Next Generation’ member who just managed to rank-in this year.

A new face from SKE48 7th Generation. Great, she’s just appointed center in SKE48 newest single, too.

Her rank raised by 5 compared to last year. Despite being original ace of NGT48 1st generation, her rank is pretty low, though

69. Nagisa Sakaguchi (AKB48 Team 8, 17,303)

AKB48 Team 8 is a rather special team in AKB48Group. Being sponsored by Toyota, it consists of 47 members (now 46 with 1 announced graduation) from 47 prefectures in Japan. Nagisa is from Hokkaido and this year get 1 rank up compared to last year, by the way.

68. Sumire Sato (SKE48 Team E, 17,320)

A rather-old member, originally from AKB48 7th Generation whose have been in the group for 9 years now. One of my favorite member because we share the same birthday and some traits. Her ranks was dropped last year (frustating), but raised again this year by 7 rank.

67. Serika Nagano (AKB48 Team 8, 17,662)

From Osaka, she just managed to ranked-in this year, too.

66. Marika Tani (SKE48 Team E, 17,744)

Originally an HKT48 1st Generation member, her ranks dropped by 11 from last year (Oh NOO).

65. Nao Ota (AKB48 Team 8, 17,757)

This girl is from Kyoto and just managed to rank this year. Come to think of it, there are good amount of Team 8 members ranked this year. Nice! This girl will be center for Upcoming Girls track.

One of the heavily-pushed member in SKE48 keep her rank stagnant. IMO, this is not a good situation. She’s beautiful.

63. Haruka Kumazaki (SKE48 Team E, 18,299)

Don’t follow her much. But her rank raised by 4. Congrats.

62. Aoi Motomura (HKT48 Team KIV, 18,363)

HKT48 Team KIV captain. In 2015, her rank fall from 48 to 80. Her fans then raged and made her ranked 36 last year. However, due to a lot of factor, she’s falling 26 position this year.

61. Ichikawa Miori (NMB48 Team N, 18,814)

When her name called. I was like “YATTA!” This originally AKB48 10th Gen member is your daily dose of dorkness and what makes it better. SHE’S A LEGAL LOLI! You wouldn’t believe with her appearance she was just as old as me. It was devastating that her ranks getting lower these past years. She didn’t even managed to rank last year (FRIGGIN 81 can you believe!?). Included in NHK 2017 Kohaku Utagassen Senbatsu where you can’t easily spam votes and AKB48 senbatsu twice in a row was good for her.

60. Nagisa Shibuya (NMB48 Team M, 19,263)

She’s down 4 position from last year. But what I like about this girl is, she kept smiling and grateful for her position.

59. Natsumi Matsuoka (HKT48 Team H, 19,372)

DAMN, this Team H captain (and my HKT48 Oshi) ranked-down by 13 position than last year.

58. Yuki Arai (SKE48 Team KII, 19,467)

Ranked-up 28 position. Congrats!

57. Airi Tanigawa (NMB48 Team N, 19,752)

Two years ago, this NMB48 2nd Gen member was ranked 74. She didn’t participate in 2016 election, and that decision proven good by this year result.

56. Saki Takeuchi (SKE48 Team KII, 19,919)

Ranked-down 25 position. Too bad.

55. Orin Muto (AKB48 Kenkyuusei, 20,356)

Her sister is Tomu Muto (an underrated AKB48 12th gen member whose rank was #10 in 2016 without any push) whose withdraw her participation this year. Her votes obviously came down to her sister as Orin was just debuted.

Ranked-up 4 position. Congrats!

53. Maho Yamaguchi (NGT48 Team NIII, 20,818)

I know her because of her miscommunication scandal (she was suspected having sex in Showroom, some kind of live streaming site due to her heavy breathing(?)). I don’t know the detail but that was later proven not true. It was just make her more famous! Look at her rank now!

52. Haruka Komiyama (AKB48 Team 4, 20,910)

I don’t like her much, but she is a member with worst drop compared to last year (from #21 to #52).

51. Yui Oguri (AKB48 Team 8, 21,296)

Being unranked last yer, this Tokyo girl’s presence is more and more in AKB48 recently. Congrats!

50. Natsumi Tanaka (HKT48 Team H, 21,472)

The tallest member of Japanese AKB48Group. She wasn’t included in the single last year with her rank (#89). Neither was ever ranked despite of her status as HKT48 1st Gen. She has an interesting personality. Congratulations!.

49. Riko Sakaguchi (HKT48 Team H, 21,643)

Didn’t follow her. But she ranked-up 10 position. Congrats, Future Girls center!

This girl was appointed as center for NGT48 1st Single. Currently my NGT48 Oshi, she managed to jump 73 position from last year.

22. Masana Oya (SKE48 Team S, 30,236)

This one of the oldest and one of two remaining member of SKE48 1st gen wasn’t participating last year election. However, her loyal fans remains on her side, it seems.

21. Rena Kato (AKB48 Team B, 30,282)

She was pushed at almost the same time as now-graduated Haruka Shimazaki. Ranked-up 5 position, she is slowly climbing the ladder.

20. Ririka Sutou (NMB48 Team N, 31,779)

Ranked-up 24 position. This girl surely has bright future in the group. I like her because she said she likes an AKB48 4th Gen member which I like, Amina Sato (a.k.a the first underrated member in AKB48Group History). However, on her speech, she stated that

SHE IS GETTING MARRIED!

The whole fandom is on fire after this announcement. Actually, before this results announced, a paparazzi-ish newspaper in Japan called Shukan Bunshun was announced that they will reveal a member’s scandal after the election. I thought it may be a top member if they decides to drop that bomb right after the election, thus Ririka may be thought it’d be better if she announced it herself. But seriously, this news is more famous even more than the cancellation concert event, nor other big announcement which I will write later. However, there is no further announcement about what will happen to her. EDIT: It seems Ririka and her partner will still going married, but not in the near moment. She decided to leave NMB48 even though management offered her to stay. Man...I hope she will be happy wherever she is. In addition, she will continue to live in showbiz.

19. Minami Minegishi (AKB48 Team K, 34,668)

Ranked-down 2 position. This last HER HIGHNESS ORIGINAL MEMBER OF AKB48 1ST GENERATION makes a bunch of mistakes this year thus she ranked-down. I’d prefer she graduates first before another Original AKB member, Yuki Kashiwagi but it’s likely won’t happen.

18. Kaori Matsumura (SKE48 Team KII, 34,977)

Two years ago, this girl ranked in Top 16. However, she didn’t participate last year. This result isn’t that bad, it’s just the votes are getting crazy this year.

17. Mion Mukaichi (AKB48 Team K, 35,201)

Another Mio case. She was predicted to be in Kami7 (Top 7) this year. This 4 position drop is marking that this will the be first time there is no Team K representation in Top 16. She’s center, at least.

First time ranked-in, and in Senbatsu! NICE!

My NMB48 oshimen. She is the highest NMB48 member ranking in this year election after their biggest name, Sayaka Yamamoto chose to opt out. She ranked-up 12 position.

11. Juri Takahashi (AKB48 Team 4, 42,663)

Ranked-up 4 position, this Team 4 Captain get some amount of critics because of her speech that calling out Ririka’s confession.

10. Rie Kitahara (NGT48 Team NIII, 45,684)

After a lot of NGT48 girls ranked-in, I was afraid their captain (whose initially an AKB48 5th Gen) would not rank at all. Thank God that wasn’t happen. She even jumped 2 position, and the highest result she ever managed this far.

I predicted this Team 4 co-captain would managed to Kami7. However, her votes raised and her rank too, from #14 last year. Still good.

8. Sarina Souda (SKE48 Team KII, 52,475)

Jumped 22 position, this girl is very amazing.

7. Yui Yokoyama (AKB48 Team A, 58,314)

From #11, this Team A Captain and also ALL48 General Manager proves she is worthy to bear the title Soukantoku (General Manager).

6. Akari Suda (SKE48 Team E, 63,124)

Ranked-up 1 position. I don’t like this girl that much, but okay.

5. Yuka Ogino (NGT48 Team NIII, 73,386)

If I call Akari Yoshida amazing I would call this girl incredible. She was ranked #1 in preliminaries, and #5 in actual results despite this is only her 2nd election and even she was unranked last year. I like this girl ever since she joined Baito AKB (Part-Timer AKB Member, lmao)

4. Sakura Miyawaki (HKT48 Team KIV, 82,803)

Ranked-up 2 position, this girl is a promising member.

3. Jurina Matsui (SKE48 Team S, 113,615)

Despite of her amazing spirit, it looks like she won’t be able to beat AKB48 Top 2 yet. She remains in #3.

2. Mayu Watanabe (AKB48 Team B, 149,132)

Next year, Mayuyu and Sasshi won’t be participating. Mayu because she will graduate from AKB48 *CRYING IN THE CORNER* and Sasshi because she said this will her last election. So, it will be a bloodbath between Jurina and Sakura. They’d better watch out, though. Yuka Ogino, Hinata Honma, and another numerous members whose leap high must not be underestimated.
