In Delhi, a chance brush with Salim Durani | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: A drooping blazer hangs from the spartan shelf above the bed. On the bedside table, an unpretentious lighter with a single cigarette stuck to it like newbies in an unfamiliar city clinging to each other for comfort and safety. In a pandemic where hotels had to be turned into hospitals not too long ago, a just-opened 50-bed hospital in the urban village of Masoodpur in Delhi’s south west district, doubles up as a hotel for purposes of inauguration. ‘Impatient’ in Room 007 is an 85-year-old going on 86, but insists he is still 83 and would reduce that even further if no one was looking. Salim Durani is in town. “Yeh Corona hai toh kya hua, dosti zyaada purani hai,” he says, “They could have invited any politician, but instead chose to call sportsmen — me and boxer Vijender Singh. There is no way I wouldn’t have come.” Like they always said about him, Durani sat as unaffected alongside royalty as when he broke bread with the commoner or shared a smoke with a pauper. “I don’t go out often. Abhi naa, because of age my back is going. That’s why I wear a brace,” he says as he begins to raise his shirt to show it to you. You have to stop him, because old age and its entrapments is something you cannot associate with the man. Tall, light-eyed and handsome, almost louche in his bearing once, Durani may today look a pale shadow of his former self but his eyes, those bags below them notwithstanding, continue to blaze with indefatigable life, a strange zest and often, with a flicker of memory. “Arrey, yaad ka kyaa hai,” he laughs before lapsing into a short raspy cough. “Yaadein toh bahut hain. Jo kabhi yaad aata hai, usko yaad kar leta hoon.” That cigarette will soon need lighting up. Born in Kabul, baby steps in Karachi and lived and loved in India, Durani is Indian cricket’s original rake – his flamboyant, maverick persona not the construct of a PR concept but snatched from the air and hewn from the earth itself. It lasts longer, and rubs off on you too. The first of the Indian game’s mavericks, it is predictably futile to ask him to break-down his famous six-hitting technique for us. Was it the wrist, the shoulder or the forearms? Or did he read the ball way too early? He looks at you blankly, making the query look stupid when it is not. Asking the same was perhaps an impossible task in the 1960s as well. How does an erratic genius explain his being erratic, or his genius? “I used to play with a 2.4 bat, single rubber, Kashmir willow,” he suddenly says. Compared to the current-day thickness of the blade averaging in the high 5’s, it must have resembled a toothpick but it famously had the desired effect. “Whenever I played in India, it was with Mehtab Special. Bombay mein banti thi,” he says smiling, almost as if revealing a secret. This IPL edition, when the obscene volume of sixes in the UAE is causing disquiet about the unequal nature of the contest, it is somewhat ironic that we talk of the format where he is often looked at with longing. The current season’s Six on Demand mantra, was originally coined for him. Does he think he was born in the wrong era? “Farak itna hi hai, today’s cricket has more chances,” is his cryptic response. Make of that what you will. The famous symbiotic relationship between Durrani and his fans is a source of merriment among his much-younger minders. “Daddu key peeche hamesha ladkiyon ki fauj hoti thi,” one of them needles. Daddu Durani is unfazed at the ‘allegation’, neither blush nor bluster, just a longer drag of the cigarette. There was always a danger to Durani. “Babu Ram used to call me ‘Bhidhu’, kyunki mein kissi sey bhi bhidh jaata tha.” Not to be confused with the good-natured Mumbai-ya ‘bidu’, Durani was referring to film director BR Ishara’s deeper tapping of the man’s personality that made him cast the cricketer in a 1973 film, Charitra. “The tall light-eyed Salim Durani was cast in the role of Ashok, a rich playboy who has a different woman in his bed every night,” writes film journalist Karishma Upadhay in ‘Parveen Babi: A Life’, the recent biography of the late actress and Durani’s co-star in the film. Upadhyay recounts a Filmfare interview back then, where he admits that though he still loved the game, even after a decade of playing, it wasn’t paying the bills. A sign of his undeniable star appeal, Durani, writes Upadhyay, was also approached by “Kamal Amrohi, of Pakeezah and Mahal fame, had wanted to make a film with the Pathan.” “I’m still a member of IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association),” Durani says with pride, making you wonder if you should continue talking about his cricketing days – how he got Sobers out but is still in awe of him – or dwell on Indian sport’s first sex symbol’s brush with celluloid stardom. Taken in, on an impulse, you invite him to home to tea forgetting all protocols that need to be followed. Durani smiles and nods, but his long-time minder, Mahesh pipes up, “Daddu wants to go to the Press Club before he leaves.” That’s when the fire in Salim Durani’s aged eyes turns into a twinkle.

After Mandana Karimi, now an actress, Simran Suri, has accused filmmaker Sajid Khan of sexual harassment. Suri is the fifth woman to level allegations on him. Earlier, Saloni Chopra, Rachel White and journalist, Karishma Upadhyay, had opened up about the harrowing experiences they had with Sajid. Coming back to Simran’s allegations, the lady shared that she was asked to strip by Sajid just the way he asked Rachel White to do so. She took to her Twitter handle and wrote, “I kept thinking all these years @whitespeaking to talk about this a## @SimplySajidK and what stopped me was that nobody would listen. He did exactly the same with me while he was casting for Himmatwala. Called me to his juju house and asked me to strip.” Revealing that the incident took place during Sajid’s film, Himmatwala’s casting, she added, “He (Sajid) was on his treadmill, wearing an undershirt. He said, ‘See, my body is so good!’ I was wondering why a man, who is supposed to be in a professional meeting, wearing sandos! I felt really weird. After some time, he asked me to strip. I was shocked but he said, ‘I am the director. I will have to see your body.”Later on, the director pulled down her top and when she protested, Sajid asked her to keep voice down as his mother was present in the adjacent room. Simra added that she left his home thereafter and deleted his number. Despite him calling her again, Simran abused Sajid and disconnected his call.  The Bollywood.Life.com : 15th. Oct,18

Nana Patekar Quits Housefull 4, Says Appropriate For Team's Convenience
New Delhi: Nana Patekar who was to star in Housefull 4, has stepped down from the project. Nana Patekar who has been accused of sexual harassment by Tanushree has stepped out from the movie, saying that it will be convenient for the production team. As we know that Akshay Kumar who is the part of the movie 'Houseful 4' has cancelled the shoot for the film over allegations against certain members of the film's team. Speaking to news agency ANI, the veteran actor's son Malhar said Mr Patekar quitting the project is the 'appropriate' step. "Nana sahib thought of the convenience of everybody as he wishes the best for the producer and the crew and hence felt that stepping out of the project would be an appropriate thing to do at this point of time."
The statement of  Nana Patekar's exit came few hours later of Sajid Khan's statement. Sajid Khan who was to direct the movie has stepped down from the project as he has been gripped under the #MeeToo Movement where he has been accused of sexual misconduct with actresses Rachel White (Ungli), Saloni Chopra (TV series Screwed Up), and journalist Karishma Upadhyay. After which Sajid Khan even tweeted and wrote:  "In the wake of the allegations against me and the pressure being put on my family, my producers and are the stars of my film Housefull 4, I must take the moral responsibility of stepping down from my directorial post, till the time I can allay the allegations and prove the truth. I request my friends in the media to kindly not pass judgement till the truth is out."
Two weeks ago, the #MeToo movement in India was set in motion by Tanushree Dutta, who named Mr Patekar as her alleged harasser. In separate interviews, one among them to NDTV, Ms Dutta alleged Mr Patekar misbehaved with her on the sets of Horn 'OK' Pleassss in 2008. Nana Patekar denied Ms Dutta's claims and subsequently sent a legal notice to Ms Dutta asking for an apology. Ms Dutta, who has been promised help by top film body Cine And TV Artists Association or CINTAA and has also reached out to the Maharashtra Women Commission, filed an FIR against Mr Patekar in Mumbai earlier this week.
Today, Akshay Kumar, who was holidaying abroad, tweeted to say that the shooting of Housefull 4 has been stalled till 'further investigation'. Riteish Deshmukh, who also stars in Housefull 4, 'seconded' Akshay Kumar's decision.
When Tanushree Dutta named and shamed Nana Patekar as a sexual predator, Mr Patekar was shooting with Team Housefull 4 in Jaisalmer. Soon after his return to Mumbai, Nana Patekar briefly met the media and said: "My lawyer has asked me to not talk to any channel, have to listen to him. I would say what I said 10 years back, the truth doesn't change." Before the press meet, Nana Patekar told Times Now that it would have been impossible for him to harass Ms Dutta on a crowded set and that he would sue for defamation.
As the #MeToo wave caught up with Bollywood, industry celebrities such as Alok Nath, Subhash Ghai, Kailash Kher and Vikas Bahl, among others have been named as alleged sexual harassers. Earlier this week, Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao stepped away from a film because of sexual misconduct allegations against a team member.

Sajid Khan Steps Down As The Director Of Housefull 4
New Delhi: Director Sajid Khan who has been accused of sexual harassment by three women, has stepped down as the director of the movie Housfull 4. Taking to his twitter, 47-year-old filmmaker wrote: "In the wake of the allegations against me and the pressure being put on my family, my producers and are the stars of my film Housefull 4, I must take the moral responsibility of stepping down from my directorial post, till the time I can allay the allegations and prove the truth. I request my friends in the media to kindly not pass judgement till the truth is out.
Three women namely Rachel White, assistant director Saloni Chopra, and journalist Karishma Upadhyay, accused Sajid Khan of sexaul harassment and shared their heart-wrenching story on their respective social media handles.
On the other hand Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar urged producer of 'Houseful 4' to cancel the shoot as the director of the movie Sajid Khan has been accused of sexual harassment. The actor tweeted: "I have just landed back in the country last night and reading all the news has been very disturbing. I've requested the producers of Housefull 4 to cancel the shoot until further investigation. This is something that requires stringent action. I will not work with any proven offenders and all this who have been subjugated to harassment should be heard and given the justice they deserve." Soon after Akshay Kumar announced the cancellation the shooting, Sajid Khan tweeted he's "stepping down" from the post of director of the film "till the time I can allay the allegations and prove the truth." Shortly after the tweet Sajid Khan announced that he will be stepping down from the movie.
Sajid Khan has been accused of sexual misconduct by actresses Rachel White (Ungli) and Saloni Chopra (TV series Screwed Up), and journalist Karishma Upadhyay. In a blog post, Ms Chopra accuses Sajid Khan of harassing her mentally, emotionally and sexually. Rachel White re-tweeted Saloni Chopra's account and added her own story. Among other allegations, Ms White said that Mr Khan told her she could get a role in his film (he was casting for 2014 film Humshakals) if she could "seduce him in 5 minutes." On her Twitter page, Karishma Upadhyay shared what happened with her when she interviewed Sajid Khan in early 2000s. Like Ms Chopra and Ms White, Ms Upadhyay also claimed that Sajid Khan started with "trash talk" and added he tried to forcibly kiss her.
Twinkle Khanna, Akshay Kumar's wife also urged the Housefull team to take a firm stance on this issue. " Appalled hearing multiple incidents of harassment and it is truly horrific to hear what these women have been through. Everyone involved in Housefull needs to take a firm stance on this issue. This cannot go in," she tweeted.
The #MeToo movement knocked on Bollywood's door recently and several prominent members of the film industry, such as Alok Nath, Rajat kapoor, Nana Patekar and Vikas Bahl, have been outed as sexual predators.
