A Jet Wolf 2024 Book List
I keep meaning to do this, and as I'm clearly not in the mood to work my actual job today, why not now? WHY NOT INDEED.
For the first time in a long time, I'm making an active effort to read. It's something I enjoy but have let slip away from me over the years, and after finally admitting it wasn't going to just naturally return without putting in the work, here we are. I've also allowed myself to embrace audiobooks, which has been a sticking point I can't explain, but increases my book consumption about a thousand fold. I "read" as I get ready in the morning, while taking my steps, while knitting, before bed, whenever the fuck. It's not yet April and I just finished the twelfth book out of my 2024 goal of twenty, thus proving I was being weird about something for stupid reasons, as is really often the case so you'd think I'd learn sooner, but why make it easy for myself.
Anyway, I like lists, and also foisting my unsolicited opinion on the world. Here, then, is the former, with thoughts on each to eventually follow as I will inevitably continue to not want to do actual work.
Oh, and the first lines thing, too. Because I think it's neat.

have you ever considered making an art book with an accumulation of your drawings and finished pieces? jw because your work is immaculate 🫶
Thank you very much! 🥲🫶 I plan to open a storefront for art prints in spring of 2024, but I have no plans to make a book.
Would it be a good idea? I would need to think of a theme .. or maybe just “Batfamily” is good enough _(:3」 ∠)_

I’ve been listening to a lot of Christian music lately. It’s kind of like my church right now. My husband still wants to start a church with me. But even the two of us don’t see eye to eye on issues like who Jesus was and is. I believe he was created first by Yahweh in heaven as an angel, and then was born to Mary, and then after he died and the 40 days after he returned to heaven as an angel, where he is now. My husband doesn’t believe he had a life before being born to Mary, or even that his sacrifice had value.
We do both believe that Yahweh is the Father who created us all, and he alone is God. The holy spirit is not a person, but marijuana smoke. It is not essential for worship, but it is the incense that is offered with prayers of the holy ones. If you don’t want to do it, don’t, but please don’t tell me to quit. It is part of my spiritual worship of Yahweh the One True God of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. The trinity is blasphemy.
Because I believe this way, I don’t have a church I can worship with in good faith. I even have to change the name Jesus to Yahweh in most of the Christian songs I listen to make it true. And I can’t go back to the Jehovah’s Witnesses because I can’t quit smoking tobacco or marijuana.
It’s a JW teaching about “The Appointed Times of the Nations” that lasted seven times, that they teach ended in 1914. The time comes from a calculation of a year for each day in 7 years, or 2,520 years. This time is also 1,260 years, twice, and that number appears in Revelation 12:6.
This is not the full extent of the seven times for Yahweh’s punishment, because at Daniel 12:11,12 specifically say it would last 1,290 days and 1,335 days. There is a minor fulfillment of the prophecy at Daniel 4 in Nebuchadnezzar, but the major fulfillment of this prophecy is Yahweh being represented by the tree that is cut down, and that lasts a year for each day.
The beginning of the seven times started when God’s king was first overthrown by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, dated at Daniel 1:1 and Jeremiah 25:1, in 607BCE. Jeremiah goes on to prophesy 70 years of desolations for Jerusalem, and they stared at the same time. How interesting that now, at the end of the 2,625 years, Israel has been a modern nation for a little over 70 years.
This year there is another solar eclipse on April 8. It’s inbetween Easter and Passover, which are about 3 weeks apart this year, when they usually are the same week. Please, don’t celebrate Easter. The Babylonian fertility goddess Ishtar, pronounced Easter, has eggs and bunnies as symbols. Also, the whole point isn’t that he rose again, the point is that he died a sacrificial death to fulfill the law, one last blood sacrifice for all time. Jesus isn’t here anymore, but he did say he was returning and that every eye will see him. The time is ripe for this prophecy to be fulfilled. There was a solar eclipse last October 14, but I missed that one. I did see the one on August 21, 2017. I counted the days from the 2017 eclipse, and I added 1,290 days, and I added another 1,335 days, and I arrived at October 27, 2024. That’s still in the future. It’s not too long after Yom Kippur on October 12,2024. I believe these are the two most important Hebrew holidays, and we should all observe them. Over the Passover meal is when Jesus instituted the Last Supper.
I still believe most of what the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach. It makes sense. I proved it to myself. But the religion is not doing good. They dumbed down their translation of the bible in 2013. They only used their 1984 translation of the bible as reference to write the 2013 translation. What a joke, it’s so much worse. The new songbook is another sore spot for me. I absolutely loved the 1984 book Sing Praises to Jehovah. And now, the new songbook is also so much worse. It feels like the whole religion lacking good leadership. It’s a sign of the times, I guess.
Take care, keep praying, make good choices so good things happen. Yahweh awesome!

The Pallbearers Club, by Paul Tremblay
Did I like this? Did I not? YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE
Let's start with the things I can say for sure. (Light spoilers to follow, but nothing too egregious.)
I loved the idea behind this, and the style that carried it through. The basic gist here is a memoir written by this guy, Art Barbara (fake name), who is a general sad sack disaffected Gen X'er who loves music and crawling up his own ass. His memoir -- beginning around 1988 when he's 17 and going through to the "now" of 2020-ish -- is scattered with commentary, refutations, and alternate points of view by his oldest friend, Mercy (also fake name), who has found and is reading the book.
LOVED THIS. Loved what essentially comes down to dueling unreliable narrators. Loved what could almost be considered a four-way conversation between Art, Mercy, the author, and the reader about memory and nostalgia, choice and blame, growth and stagnation. There's some good shit here.
DID NOT LOVE how ponderously long it took to get there. At around 270 pages, this isn't an over long book, but ye gods, did it feel like it took FOR FUCKING EVER sometimes.
(We get a bit more spoilery under the cut)
And it's tough to know whose fault that is, or if it's a "fault" at all. Those navel-gazing, aimless parts, that's Art, that's his life, in his own words, as inescapable to us as it feels to him. Is it a fault that I'm sitting here like "Oh my god my guy GET THE FUCK ON WITH IT" when I'm pretty sure that's exactly the way I'm supposed to feel about him?
Quite possibly not, but we also probably could've gotten that with like twenty pages less of Art meandering through the Providence music scene.
In many ways, the book never really grows beyond its premise, but again, is that the point? The characters themselves are rooted in place, perpetually locked in a space that has been swallowed by years and abandoned by relevance. Even Bob Mould went solo, kids.
I think to fully decide my feelings on The Pallbearers Club, I might have to read more by Paul Tremblay. This is my first exposure to his work, so it's tough for me to say with confidence what's stylistic choice versus stylistic failing. Is pondering and aimless more Art, or Paul?
You may note, if you've read the book or even just the publisher's description, I've completely left out anything to do with horror or supernatural or whatever. Those parts are there, for sure, even crucial to the central glue of the plot, but I found them surprisingly extraneous. Even by "this isn't really about this" horror standards, it all felt irrelevant. Or perhaps the more correct word is incidental. I'm not even sure the author (the Art author) intended his readers to believe he was truly dealing with spoopy spoops, or if he was just metaphoring super hard, with that particular brand of pretentious arrogance only the truly insufferable can wield.
So yeah, I still have no idea if I liked it or not. I may also have uncomfortably identified with some stuff in here, which was very rude, but anyway. Hell of a premise, though, and done well enough that I'll happily try another of Paul Tremblay's books.
