BL game~きんとうか~Kintouka Review

WARNING: kinda spoiler-ish? I try to avoid story spoilers though.

„Instead of digust and anger today we offer you... grief and pain”- should probably be the summary of this game                                                                   The game from 2017 by GRISEDGE, is a story about funeral ceremonies, death and Shinto and WILL break your heart like it broke mine. Why do bl games keep doing this to me.

DO NOT PLAY THIS IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 

Story summary The story follows our main character Souta Suzumura who, in the beginning of the game is just a 5-Year-Old baby boy visiting his grandma on the island, where she lives for the summer. Shortly before he has to go back to Tokyo with his parents, he promises his friends that he will be back next year. However, after they went back to Tokyo they had a car accident and his parents died. Fast forward 18 years, Souta is back on the island for his grandma’s funeral and finally gets to meet his friends again~   

Story Shinto traditions and Shinto funerals are the main themes of this game and man there are A LOT of technical terms and explanations regarding those. The story itself is pretty depressing because it focuses on the loss of your family and loved ones. But there are a still a lot of fun and cute scenes, so don’t worry. The relationship of the characters is captivating and will let you keep playing the game.

Art I really like the art in this game. Especially the one picture where Souta is standing in a huge flower field - SO BEAUTIFUL I actually had to stop playing to just stare at it for like 5 min. The boys are reaaally good looking. I liked Shuus design most at first, but at the end they were all too attractive for me pls stop all you amazing artists.

Music The music fit the depressive mood perfectly and did a good job giving me anxiety. Thanks game for that. The song at the ending scene was beautiful.

Character The strongest point of this game are the characters. The relationships between them are JUST SO GOOD. First of all, they are all childhood friends. Secondly the amount of touchy-touchy scenes is just what my cold heart needed - and I don’t mean this in a sexual or romantic way. There are so many hugs, hand holding and even CUDDLING scenes before anything romantic even happens. They casually drop “I like you”s or  even“I love you”s - just like that. And even after the romantic part starts to develop, they still were all so nice to Souta? Like, there was no r*pe no forcing him to anything and always asking for consent. Like? What? Is this actually a good and healthy relationship? I take 100 please. The best part is, that the confession scenes were really early in the routes, so we get to see how their relationship progresses - even join them on dates etc.

And now to the bois (all beans and must be protected at all cost)

Suzumura Souta Our cute 23 years old always bottom main character. I really liked him. He was sweet, kind hearted and most important NOT tsundere. (I know tsundere characters are popular, but after so many games it just gets so annoying) He has no problem falling for a guy or telling him he loves him. Because all of his relatives are dead, he gets lonely fast. The best part about him was that he already had 5 relationships and is far away from being inexperienced, while half of the guys are virgins lol.

Oumi Munesada 3 years older than Souta and the head of the Oumi family. He is strict and takes his position as  head of the family really serious, but will break every rule for Souta. When he is with Souta he is just a big cuddly bear. He has never fallen in love and shows no interest in women. Well, good, this is a bl game after all. His route was cute and I enjoyed watching him slowly fall for Souta. The only thing that bothered me in his route was a couple that was brought up so many times. It felt like they had more screen time then the actual pairing. There is a lot family drama going on in his route and fuck his grandma.

Watari Kyou The younger son of the Watari family. He is 20 years old and was friends with Soutas grandma. I hope you all like sweets cause this boy is sugar~ He totally is a bean baby, childish and also a cry baby. You could see this boy had a crush on Souta after like 2 days and is extremely bad at hiding it. He doesn’t remember Souta anymore because he was just a small baby at the time. Kyou also lacks experience so it was really cute to see Souta being the lead and Kyou just blushing 24/7 in their relationship. And can we please talk about their first kiss?? Because OMG this was SO CUTE, I died. He is not on good terms with his brother but he’s just acting tsundere and in reality, needs the Onii-san love.

Watari Shuu The first guy I had my eyes on. The head of the Watari family, who is responsible for the funerals. He is 3 years older than Souta, and Kyous big brother. Of all boys he is the most calm and quiet one. The first time Souta meets him after their 18 years separation, he uses keigo (Japanese honorifics language). For some reason Souta is really scared of him at the beginning. So much actually, that he actually fainted the first time he saw him haha loser. Shuu has experience with dating and is a little bit on the kinky side, but at the end kinda tsundere because he only tells Souta he loves him at the end of his route, not like the other guys who shower Souta with sukidayo~ aishiteru~ The only complaint I have is that I wanted to know more about when and why he fell in love with Souta.  

Tsukasa  the reason a waterfall was running down my face A mysterious guy, who lost his memory and is found by Souta in the flower fields Souta also took him home because why not. He is the true ending to this game and you can only play his route, after you completed the good endings of the other boys. He and Souta get along so well that I thought they were soulmates. He is such a cute and fun guy and was not that into him in the beginning, but the game is doing a great job on getting you to like every boy.

I don’t even know how I can describe his route without spoiling too much, but one thing‘s for sure: IT HURT SO MUCH. When you play the other routes you’ll get an idea what will happen at the end (There are a lot of hints throughout the game) and even if you know what will happen and you think you are ready, trust me, YOU ARE NOT. The ending will destroy you. I was crying a river at the end and could not stop for 30 min after the game had ended. I recommend a whole pack of tissues for his route :)    

Do I recommend this game? Absolutely, even if it will destroy your heart, this game is an absolute masterpiece. The relationships are the best I have ever seen in a bl game. The story is great, especially when you are into Shinto or just like to suffer. Please do not play this if you are already sad because it will make life only worse. 11/10 tears

-My translator had problems with the names like always so everyone was either “my wife”, “Nagisa” or “my mother in law” yaa…good thing I can read Japanese -In Tsukasas route: When Souta noticed he liked Tsukasa, he was like “I must hide my feelings, he can’t know” and in the next moment he asked Tsukasa if he has a girlfriend xD -This is the first time in a game I ever heard someone say the english word “anal sex”. 

-Souta has some kind of horny disease where he feels an extreme amount of pleasure ok actually it was not really physically more like a spiritual shit or something and because of that he moans in like the first 30 minutes of the game.

-The bad endings in this game are not that bad in my opinion… or maybe I am just too used to r*pe and gore.

-Talking about bad endings: in one of them Souta gets to f*ck himself. Yay selfcest xD

-Souta called Shuu “Shuu-nii” in the middle of the sexy times and I was ready to murder him. Souta I’m kinkshaming you

-Souta congratulated Kyou on losing his virginity after they had sex for the first time.

I really, really fucking hate how this stupid BL game keeps showing Tsukasa/Souta in the common route. I’ve said this before but it completely ruins the point of picking a guy to date when there’s already a canon pairing the story wants to shove down your throat. I hate the illusion of choice.

:( It’s sad that Souta never visited even though he always sent gifts and called his grandma each month… I can see this as something people can relate to. Sometimes you’re just too busy to visit your relatives. Then there’ll come a time where they’re gone and regret comes crashing in waves like, “I should’ve visited, I should’ve said I loved them” but it’d be too late.

And I can’t fault Kyou for being upset. He’s the youngest in the cast and we knew him when he was three so I’m not surprised he forgot about Souta (or he did remember and he’s just super hurt that souta never came back ;___;)He only knows us as the grandson who never came to visit their lonely grandma. He showed up to the wake, and gave Souta a piece of his mind.  He’s seems like a good kid. ;v; He clearly cares for the late granny. He was also respectful enough to do common courtesy in front of the dead.
