😻 WE HAVE A FERN DIAGNOSIS - AND TREATMENT! 😻 Fern has hypothyroidism. It explains the stunted growth (he is 14 weeks old but the size of an 8 weeker) and the constipation, as well as delayed sexual maturation and retained kitten fur. Best of all? With medication he will have a normal, healthy, happy quality of life - with no constipation. Also? Lol, poor Fern is a certified derp. "Hypothyroidism is a condition that is characterized by an underactive thyroid which is not producing enough of the hormones that are essential to maintaining a healthy metabolism." "Kittens that lack this hormone will have related symptoms, such as mental dullness and smaller than normal proportions." "Treatment for hypothyroidism in cats is aimed at restoring normal blood levels of thyroid hormone. This is typically managed by giving an oral thyroid medication supplement, in either liquid or tablet form." "The drug sodium levothyroxine is usually given twice daily. Some cats may also require a second medication, called synthetic sodium liothyronine (L-T3)." However, it has been noted that while adults diagnosed with hypothyroidism have a good prognosis, the outlook for kittens is somewhat unpredictable - but that is often because of no diagnosis until symptoms are severe due to disease ravaging the body.
