Kokichi isn't paranoid.
Not trusting a detective that is blatantly biased, that lies for people he knows are guilty (Kaede) and people the evidence pointed towards (Maki, Kaito), and is best friends with one of the people most likely to make an unsolvable murder, Maki, The Ultimate Assassin, and Kaito, the one constantly getting other people in dangerous situations? That makes logical sense.
Not trusting the Maki, the Ultimate Assassin, when she lied to the group, tried to kill him for telling the truth, who has a talent that would make winning this game so easy she could practically do it on a whim, and actively threatens not only him but other characters as well? Makes sense.
Not trusting and eventually locking up Kaito, who almost gets multiple groups of people killed with his rash plans, has a violent and impulsive temper, and also hates Kokichi? Makes sense.
Not trusting literally anyone else when there's a mastermind among them and he's painted a giant target on his back by being the antagonist on purpose? Makes sense.
More than that, he HAS wanted to work with people and open up to them. Kaede, Gonta, and Miu were all people he has either supported or relied on during the game. He also occasionally tells the truth about his feelings and tentatively let's people get a peek at his true self, and while he does backtrack on it when he gets a negative reaction or whenever he has to make sure people believe he's still antagonistic, why would he ever be truthful and reach out in the first place if he really was so distrusting?
If he's so paranoid then why is he working with people? Why is he constantly hinting at his true self? Why is he trying to save people? Why is he offering for people to join DICE left and right?
Not trusting dangerous/stupid/biased people isn't paranoid, it's common sense. Even more so when you're in a killing game.

Analysis – Shuichi's Perjury
Context
During the 4th trial Kokichi is trying to "prove" he didn't go to the rooftop (he's doing the opposite actually, but I've already done that analysis) and eventually Shuichi comes to the decision that he needs to make Kokichi stop lying, and to do this Shuichi decides to fight fire with fire and says:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's a big problem.
Why?
Problem 1
Shuichi's "testimony" means that:
He didn't have an alibi for the time he spent in the salon, the same timeframe he implies that Kokichi used to murder Miu. Tsumugi -his only alibi during this trial- even says that she hadn't known he had gone somewhere else.
His alibi implies that the rooftop door was unlocked. He was trying to prove Kokichi had gone to the rooftop, afterall.
The stairs to the rooftop were right next to the salon.
By Shuichi's own "testimony", he was in the correct timeframe to be the one who murdered Miu and he could have been in the correct location as well, and absolutely no one would've been able to say he didn't because Kokichi "wasn't there" to see him and Tsumugi admits that she didn't see him just moments prior meaning that, for all anyone knew, Shuichi could have lied about where he went and killed Miu on the roof.
The problem is that no one noticed or even pointed this out even though they all said that they believed Shuichi's statement over Kokichi's, despite the fact that it was proven that Kokichi couldn't have killed Miu. They were all too busy trying to pin Kokichi as the culprit to even consider that it could be anyone but him, and since when has anyone ever thought of Shuichi as a prime suspect since Chapter 1? They haven't.
If Shuichi's "testimony" wasn't a lie he could have murdered Miu and no one would have suspected a thing because they blindly believed in Shuichi and hated Kokichi.
Problem 2
My other (slightly less important) problem is that Shuichi had gotten so caught up in trying to find the truth, that he forgot to look for the actual culprit.
Kokichi's avatar settings were already brought up and discussed before Shuichi lied, but Shuichi is still suspecting Kokichi of being the murderer despite knowing he couldn't have done it. He even lied to try and make him "confess" to what he did, even though Kokichi couldn't do anything.
Even if it was only for a moment, Shuichi still tried to fit the suspect to the crime instead of letting the evidence lead him to the culprit, and that's incredibly stupid and dangerous when everyone's lives are on the line. Not that anyone -including Shuichi himself- noticed what Shuichi was doing, because they were all doing the same thing.
Bias Rant
Chapter 4 revealed everyone's harmful biases, including Shuichi's, but they were never really discussed or mentioned again despite the glaring danger.
Kaito was the most obvious and harmful example of this. He fought facts and logic with pure hatred towards Kokichi but the cast didn't even fault him for it, Maki (and Shuichi) even blamed Shuichi for Kaito's attitude towards Shuichi after the trial instead of blaming Kaito for being stubborn, bullheaded, and unwilling to admit to or apologize for his faults after that trial.
However, while Kaito might have been the biggest example, the others aren't off the hook either. They also didn't find fault within themselves despite trying to suspect someone who was innocent just because they didn't like him, even though they all could have literally died for not realizing their bias.
Chapter 4 should have been the best moment for them to realize "hey, I almost died today because I didn't try and find the truth and instead tried to make the truth fit what I wanted it to" and learned better than to do that and grow past their flawed thinking in order to survive, but no, they didn't even think about it.
I'm so frustrated.
I really wish the narrative would talk more about how the cast alienated Kokichi (sometimes understandably, sometimes taking it way too far) and how even Shuichi has been shown time and time again to be biased during trials while everyone else puts their faith in him and their lives in his hands. It would be an interesting plot point to have everyone go from blindly following his deductions to doubting and suspecting him after realizing he's also flawed in the same way they are.
It would also mean that Shuichi would have to develop past his biases and become a better detective to earn everyone's trust back, if he even could earn it back after being so unknowingly flippant with their lives. I think it would have been more relevant and true to the theme of the game than what his character arc actually was. Maybe they wouldn't have dragged their heels with it either–

Analysis – Kokichi's Plan in Chapter 4
The concept, the execution, and the failure.
Before we start, it's my personal recommendation that you read this analysis before rewatching the chapter 4 trial, and then reading it as you rewatch it. Unfortunately, due to tumblr limiting the number of pictures I can put in a single post, I've decided to refrain from adding screenshots as I just have too many I want to add. However, my points are evidenced by the trial itself if you watch carefully with them in mind, and so I'm encouraging you to do so. Please, please do so.
Concept
By my analysis, Kokichi's plan was to implicate himself as the culprit and for Gonta to get away with the murder in order to mercy kill the rest of the students and save them from despair.
Kokichi mentions this much before and after the trial, most people remembering the moments after and not the moments before; probably because between subtle admittance and loud screaming and crying, you'll remember the screaming and crying more. This analysis is based on the fact that his words pre- and post-trial are true, which is backed by several canon instances and also it just makes sense.
Execution
Now! This plan required a few things to work:
It required Kokichi to make everyone hate and be suspicious of him
It required Gonta to cooperate
It required Kokichi to be able to get around Shuichi's deductive reasoning in some way
It required a majority of the class to vote for Kokichi
If that wording seems specific, it's because it is!
I'll be talking about each major component of this plan and how each factor (almost) worked together to create a perfect storm + when, how, and why this plan failed despite quite frankly being a fantastic display of Kokichi's talent as the Ultimate (Supreme) Leader.
The 1st component is pretty much accomplished before the chapter even begins, he is a self-proclaimed liar that annoys people regularly after all, but in order for the 3rd and 4th components to really work he needed to sink his reputation even lower. He does this in a multitude of ways both before and during the trial: making sinister faces or looking nervous at appropriate times, antagonizing everyone (but most importantly Gonta and Kaito), and just in general being a lying nuisance that no one really wants to listen to.
The 2nd component was accomplished inside the Virtual World... and then immediately undone as soon as Gonta logged out due to a couple of crossed wires. The fact that Gonta forgot remaining undiscovered by everyone (including Kokichi) until two-thirds of the way through the trial is important to how the plan failed and adds perspective in areas, but I'll hold off on explaining why until it's time to talk about it in-depth. Make a mental note and let's move on.
The 3rd component explains why during the investigation every single surviving member of the cast told Shuichi that they trusted him but then when we get really into the trial we start seeing them doubt him immensely, Kaito being among the people that doubted Shuichi the most. Why is that? How did everyone go from relying on Shuichi to thinking for themselves and doubting his reasoning, and what does it have to do with Kokichi? It's simple: Kokichi lead the others into doing so.
We see this a lot during the investigation period, or at least the prep work of it. Kokichi constantly encourages the others to say things like: "We can't leave this all to Shuichi, we have to work hard too!" by telling them that they should all rely on Shuichi and to never doubt his judgment. Kokichi was using his bad reputation to make them come to a conclusion that is the exact opposite of what he said. More on that a little later as well!
Kokichi knows his reputation, he's the one that made it that way after all, and frequently you will see him use it to his advantage. Whether he's trying to cover up an emotional outburst or he's trying to make someone admit something, you will often see him use his reputation as someone untrustworthy to lead conversations in subtle ways.
I use the word "lead" with great emphasis as that is his Talent. He is the very best of the best at leading people; The Ultimate (Supreme) Leader. When he wants someone to think a certain way or do something they end up doing it whether they realize it or not, because he is extremely talented in his field. I cannot stress enough how good this man is at leading conversations and people into going where he wants them to go. Oh shit back to the point–!
During this time we also see Kokichi acting strange, so strange that Shuichi mentions it four times in his internal dialogue. Following him, being helpful, offering advice and hints... it seems nice until you realize his intention wasn't to become good partners with Shuichi, but to instead ruin Shuichi's reputation with the others by having them associate Shuichi with Kokichi, who they already hate thanks to component 1.
During the trial you'll see this subtle manipulation working as soon as Kokichi starts calling Shuichi partner and making Shuichi agree with his points, putting on a false show of partnership. To the others it seemed that Shuichi was picking Kokichi over all of his friends even when Shuichi himself tries to explain otherwise, and this is absolutely no coincidence.
Kaito is especially affected by this because Kaito and Kokichi are sworn enemies, and in Kaito's mind, Shuichi just picked his enemy over him. It really hurt him to be "betrayed" like this, causing Kaito to turn his back on Shuichi despite the numerous promises that he would never do such a thing he made prior to this trial. Kokichi really focuses on breaking their friendship too, interrupting Shuichi multiple times when he tries to tell Kaito that it's not personal and making sinister faces while saying that Shuichi is his partner now, taunting and gloating to Kaito's face about the loss of his sidekick. Breaking them apart was actually key to how Kokichi used Kaito's influence to his advantage in component 4.
Focus on Kaito aside, everyone else also refuses to agree with Kokichi –and Shuichi by association– which means that no matter what Shuichi says or how hard he tries to prove it, as long as Kokichi interrupts him and spins the story to make it look like he was somehow involved in that deduction, no one will agree with Shuichi no matter how much logic he throws at them. He has placed Shuichi's deductions in a permanent state of check. No matter what Shuichi says or does, Kokichi can and will get in the way of it immediately to control the narrative of the trial.
During this time Kokichi also says that Gonta is the culprit and I know that it tripped a lot of people up so I'll elaborate on what he was doing before we get to the next component. You have to remember that Kokichi's style of lying for this trial has predominantly been him saying the exact opposite of what he means in order to make the others do it. If Kokichi says "go left" they will all go right, that is how he uses his reputation. Notice how when he says Gonta is the culprit everyone's immediate reaction is to defend Gonta and persecute Kokichi even more than they were before, effectively framing himself by making it look like he was framing Gonta. When looking at Kokichi's lies it is sometimes essential to analyze the reaction he got than the lie on it's own because what he wants out of people is just as important as what he says to make them do it.
This leads into the 4th component: Kokichi getting the majority vote.
Kaito unquestionably holds the most influence in the trial after Shuichi loses all of his, gaining more by spearheading the hate campaign against Kokichi, and because of this everyone almost lost their lives in a mass execution.
After Shuichi's reputation in the eyes of the others is seen as being led astray and therefore less trustworthy, Kaito is the one that causes and loudly encourages everyone to rally against Kokichi, and by extension, doubt Shuichi's deductions. Kaito doing this more out of a hatred/distrust of Kokichi than anything related to Shuichi, with the rest following suit because they can't trust Kokichi, who they've been lead to hate so much in this trial by both Kaito and, unbeknownst to them, Kokichi. Kokichi essentially created his own witch hunt, with the cast's irrational anger without proof almost leading to a false conviction.
Allow me to further emphasize the fact that everyone but Shuichi was convinced that "Kokichi was a cold-hearted murderer trying to frame poor Gonta for his own crimes." Also allow me to remind you that according to the rules you don't need everyone to vote for the same person in order to win, you just need a majority. Kokichi had that majority and was about to "win" the trial.
...So why didn't he?
Failure
Two. Crossed. Wires.
That's it. All it took was one little piece to be out of place and Kokichi's astonishingly brilliant strategy crumbled in an instant. Allow me to clarify:
Everyone remembers the moment when Kokichi yelled at Gonta, right? The big, bad moment? That one? Good. I'm about to explain to you what Kokichi was thinking while he yelled.
In Kokichi's mind, his plan was almost complete. He had done the impossible! Everything had gone according to keikaku! He had gotten Gonta's cooperation, he made everyone blame him, he made everyone stop listening to the Ultimate Detective, all that was left was for Gonta to condemn him in front of the others and they would all vote for the wrong man. That one little nudge at this very crucial turning point and the plan would finally be complete, his effort made to bear fruit...
Except... Gonta never condemned Kokichi with any sort of evidence, all he said was "I don't know!" and "I didn't do it!" Gonta was about to trip them at the finish line and so Kokichi, as subtly as he could, told Gonta to blame him, the "culprit". Once, twice, a third time... he really tried to explain to Gonta what he was meant to do without alerting the others. It didn't even have to be true, as long as Gonta denounced Kokichi with even the slightest bit of evidence, the others were in enough of a frenzy to believe anything that pinned Kokichi as the culprit. Still, Gonta doesn't catch the hints from his collaborator. How could he? He didn't remember ever becoming partners in the first place. However, Kokichi doesn't know that and gets very frustrated that Gonta is about to throw away their one ticket to stopping the game, so he screams "Just make up an excuse or whatever" in his anger, still trying to get his point across. Gonta can't fuck up now. This is their only shot. Despite this, once more Gonta doesn't know what's going on and misses his cue.
Shuichi finally notices this as well, coming to the conclusion that Gonta's avatar had been the one with the error. Kokichi quickly realizes that his partner isn't available to him anymore, his memories lost in a bundle of wires and code. The moment is over, the frenzy has cooled off by the time Shuichi was done explaining and there was no way for him to lead the conversation again after ruining his own reputation like that. The plan failed.
All because of two little wires.
From here on out we see Kokichi visibly withdraw. There isn't anything left for him to do but complete the trial and think of a new plan. He's less motivated than before, insults everyone less than before, offers his input less than before, and generally seems like he can barely keep up his facade. You can't blame him though, with everything that happened that day and the fact that it was all in vain anyway really must have taken it's toll on Kokichi. From his friend trying to kill him to trying and failing to plan around his own murder to orchestrate and get away with a mass mercy kill... it's an unbelievable understatement to say he was having a bad day.
He speeds the trial up as much as he can with Kaito stubbornly getting in the way, forcing Shuichi to cross everyone off the suspect list except for Gonta, the unwitting blackened. Whether it was out of pity for Gonta's confusion or just him wanting the trial to be over already due to emotional exhaustion, or perhaps even both, doesn't neccesarily matter. Shuichi ends the trial regardless, and it's all over. Kokichi wasn't able to save anyone from despair and two of his friends died for nothing. He has no one to rely on now and no one left would ever consider letting him close to them. Roll credits... until he comes up with a new plan moments after Gonta is executed because if there is one thing about Kokichi you can always bet on, it's his quick wit.
Afterword
Now that we're at the end, I would like to make something very clear because with how much emphasis I put on Kokichi's capabilities as a leader I'm worried that I might be misunderstood.
I do not believe Gonta was manipulated into murdering Miu. Canon proves that Gonta was a willing collaborator due to external factors not relating to Kokichi's talent as a Leader, but instead because of despair and his own desire to protect everyone and that's that.
It's not really related to this anaylsis, however if I see someone using my own analysis to try and prove that Kokichi was anything but friends with Gonta I will go apeshit. Do not fucking do that.

Mini Analysis – A Kinda Kind Lie
At first glance it looks like Kokichi is being an idiot and an asshole when he tells everyone that since Monokuma got crushed there is no final boss and that the killing game is over and tells Kaede to shut up. I mean, the Monokubs did just say that they needed to get strong because they're the new headmasters, didn't they?
However, later when Kaede and Shuichi leave the library after seeing the black and white door, we see can the true intention behind it.
Right after they leave the library Shuichi tells Kaede not to tell anyone that there might be a traitor that will keep the killing game going even though Monokuka is dead specifically because he doesn't want to cause a panic.
Meaning that the group wasn't panicking at the moment -> because they thought the killing game was over -> because Kokichi told them that it was.
Keep in mind that he started lying right after the First Blood Perk, a motive, was revealed. We already had Rantaro point out that this motive was designed to make them stop cooperating before this, so after that Kokichi must've concluded that taking advantage of this opportunity (Monokuma blowing up) to make people think the game was over would keep them from trying to use the perk.
The narrative also hints at this being a kind lie because this was just moments after he said "it was was one of those lies to keep us more unified" and "did you know that half of my lies are told with good intentions" which comes off as a direct foreshadowing for this and his other actions during the game.
So the reason why Kokichi told Kaede to shut up when she (logically) tried to tell everyone that the killing game might not be over yet? It's because she was poking holes in his kind lie and was going to cause them to panic and murder each other.
Still a dick move to turn everyone against her when she's only telling the truth, but what would you rather have: a sad (but alive) girl or dead friends + the start of the killing game?

What do you think Kokichi's backstory and past life is? He reveals almost nothing about his life, but I think he hints at having a brother and parents in fte's with Kaede (and maybe the ones with Shuichi too) but they are all dead apparently? Does DICE exist? If not, who's taking care of him and how does he live?
Things Kokichi has said about his life:
He tells Shuichi that he killed his parents to inherit his evil organization, then backtracks and says that he didn't kill his parents, only his older brother.
He tells Kaito during the 4th trial that they must've come from different backgrounds.
He tells Shuichi in dating mode that the view through the walls of the academy reminds him of his hometown.
He says that if he died in the killing game no one would mourn for him.
It's not a lot, and it's very likely that it's not all true, but that's what he says.
"What do you think of Kokichi's backstory and past life?"
His comment about killing his family is definitely intriguing in this context because we have no clue what it means.
This could mean anything from "he was lying and his family is fine" to "they're dead to him but still alive" to "they're dead due to unknown reasons" to "he killed them himself and that's why DICE has a rule against killing" and all of that is assuming that he has a family in the first place.
I can't say anything with certainty unfortunately, but another thing that's interesting is that when Kaito implied that Kokichi's family was embarrassed of Kokichi's actions in the UTDP Kokichi immediately avoided answering the question and looked mad, albeit it was his pouting sprite. Maybe Kokichi was just doing it to be a dick or because he thinks that people who talk readily about themselves are weird, but it also could've been because Kaito hit a nerve.
It's also interesting that he asks Kirumi to be his mom immediately, but again that could've just been his antics.
No one knows for sure what the fuck is up with this dude, but there sure are a lot of theories about it lmao.
As for what I think, I think Kokichi has gone through some type of abuse (based on his comment to Kaito, which couldn't be a lie) and that he escaped it somehow, founding DICE and having them become like a family to him either after he left or before they escaped.
If it was before, that would make sense because Kokichi cares deeply about the people around him and busting himself and his best friends out of an abusive situation sounds exactly like something he would do and very reminiscent of what he tries to do in the killing game. But that's just a theory, *insert catchphrase here*.
"Does DICE exist?"
I do believe that DICE was real in the context of the game. Maybe not pregame because who could say for sure with that, but definitely in the fabricated memories of the Ultimate Supreme Leader and the UTDP universe where his memories haven't been faked.
"Who's taking care of him?"
There's no real evidence for anything aside from him saying that his lackeys give him everything he wants and that DICE has all the food, sex, and money you could ever want, which probably isn't true.
I do think that DICE takes care of themselves, but I couldn't give you evidence for it aside from the fact that Kokichi thinks of them as family and families typically provide for their own.
"How does he live?"
Personally, I think he steals for a living.
1.) In his motive video it says that he and DICE commit petty crimes.
2.) Both Shuichi and the official artbook liken Kokichi's lockpicking skills to that of a petty thief.
3.) He was casually carrying around hidden lockpicks for no discernable reason.
4.) He has a talent for slight of hand tricks and seemingly procures items from nowhere multiple times in the game.
This all makes me think that Kokichi most likely steals shit with DICE. The evidence for this isn't that strong, but with Kokichi that's probably to be expected.
His comment to Kaito about their respective backgrounds could apply here as well since stealing things just to survive sounds rough, buddy.
Alternatively: Kodaka did do a birthday tweet for Kokichi one year where "Kokichi" talked about giving up being a supreme leader, not having a part time job, and not being in college, and being 20 years old. Could Kokichi have just been lying? Yes, I mean he also said that Kiibo exploded, but he really could just be a shut-in NEET in a non-despair au where he wasn't crushed.
Thinking of Kokichi living as a NEET is funny as fuck tbh.
I wish I could give you solid answers, but I don't think anyone could give you answers. All we have is shakey evidence and theories, but at least everything I've said should be able to help you reach your own conclusions.

I realy like your analysis on the kaito-maki-shuichi relationship. So i was wondering who in your opinion has the best relationship dynamic within the cast?
Aaaa thanks! I'm more or less pleased with how it came out :D probably could be shorter though haha
-tech
As for the best dynamic... hmm.
Judging based on what I mentioned in the previous post about strengths being highlighted and weaknesses being dealt with in one way or another and believable emotional bonds that help each other, I'd have to say...
Kokichi and Gonta
For sure, it's gotta be them.
Narratively:
They are canonly a dynamic duo, working together and using their different strengths to help one another in areas the other is lacking in. It feels like they can both truly shine when they cooperate, and that's exactly how it should be.
It's very nice to see them work together because they both bring something different to the table that truly helps the other, and not always in ways you would expect at first glance. The brain and brawn thing is expected, but the extent to which they compliment each other is unparalleled by any other dynamic in the game.
Kokichi -> Gonta
Admittedly, Kokichi does less for Gonta narratively than Gonta does for Kokichi, but to be fair I would expect someone like Kokichi to be the one others help shine, not the other way around. Kokichi, as the Ultimate Leader, is more like the protagonist while Gonta is the supporting character.
For the most part though, Kokichi's narrative role relating to Gonta is to show us that Gonta isn't the happy-go-lucky himbo the rest of the cast thinks he is, allowing us to see that Gonta has depth, specifically that Gonta's morals are definitely different than what one would normally expect from someone with his personality.
The rest is something that relates more to their emotional bond, but for now I'll just say that Kokichi allows us to see Gonta's insecurities, flaws, and dedication to his friends (both the cast and Kokichi) and this improves Gonta's character immensely.
Gonta -> Kokichi
Gonta, as a character, shows us just how human Kokichi can be, especially during chapter 4 but also in little moments throughout the game as well. Whether it be lashing out at the others, being soft (like, so, so soft) with Gonta, his cooperation skills, or the depths of his sadness and loyalty, Gonta drags these reactions out of Kokichi one by one like it's his job, which it is! Narratively, Gonta's job is to allow us to see glimpses of what goes on in Kokichi's heart, something incredibly rare and precious to me.
Gonta also really allows Kokichi's ability to strategize and lead people to shine. Like, really shine. Chapter 4 was the best showcase of Kokichi's talent of leading people, but that's because he had Gonta following him. Any captain needs a crew and any Ultimate Leader needs helpful and supportive followers that believe in him. This goes alongside Kokichi's major weakness throughout the game.
Kokichi's biggest weakness is that he's placed himself into an antagonistic position. Seems smart, until you realize that hes the Ultimate Leader and he just alienated himself from literally everyone, losing any potential bonds/followers he could have made. He shot himself in the foot by forsaking some leadership options when he's the Ultimate Leader. It's the thing he's best at, but he put limits on himself anyway to protect everyone from Monokuma's attempts to break them apart.
He can still get the group to do what he wants, but it takes a considerable amount of effort on his behalf in order to do so. Gonta makes up for that by being the follower that Kokichi desperately needs. Gonta believes in Kokichi enough to go along with both of his plans, to the extent that he still goes along with them even they involve kidnapping and killing the other characters.
There's also the fact that Gonta's dedication to the others might've helped Kokichi decide to keep helping everyone, but I'll get more into that in a bit.
Emotionally:
This dynamic also makes a lot of sense from an emotional perspective. You can actually see why these two outcast characters would want to come together and hang out with each other, and why they view the other so positively: they are each other's ideals.
Kokichi -> Gonta
When Gonta needed a friend and someone to take him seriously/not dismiss him, Kokichi was there to hang out with him, seriously listen to him, and explain things to him that he didn't get the first time. Where the other kids were scared of him due to his size and talent, Kokichi had the confidence to ignore Gonta's natural intimidation and the kindness to hang out with Gonta, despite being so scared of bugs he literally foams at the mouth when they touch him.
Kokichi still regarded Gonta as a friend after that incident though, when most people (justifiably) would've held a grudge and cut him off. Gonta has some very obvious rage issues and reacts pretty impulsively to the things that upset him, but Kokichi is very patient with others, and almost forgiving to a fault at times, so he's willing to stick with Gonta and try and work through their problems instead of abandoning him. This would no doubt be something that Gonta desperately wanted from a friend, seeing as he's very self conscious about appearing as scary.
He loyally sticks by Gonta and readily offers advice, support, explanations, patience, etc... I mean the list goes on. I really do think that his relationship with Gonta is a showcase of how Kokichi would act around someone he really likes, like I'm talking about this being the basis for how I think Kokichi would act around DICE levels of emotional intimacy. I think this is Kokichi at his best, friendship wise. Especially because even during events that take place outside of the main story we never see Kokichi act this way around anyone else, even with the people I would also consider to be his friends (mainly Miu, but also sorta with Kiibo as well.)
They didn't know each other for long, but if you really look at it, it's plain to see that Kokichi really valued Gonta as a friend. I mean, I dont think someone who yells about wanting to live during his FTEs with Kaede would willingly offer to give his life for (no discernable goal) for just anyone y'know? Plus, throughout the game, he uses some of his friendliest and softest sprites during his conversations with Gonta. Even visually you can see their bond.
It's a very subtle relationship when compared to some of the more overt pairs throughout the game (aside from some key moments in chapter 4) but it's there, and honestly I can think of very few characters that share this close of a bond in the whole series game.
They actually kinda seem similar to Aoi and Sakura in a way, but somehow they compliment each other more... damn.
Gonta -> Kokichi
Likewise, Gonta also became Kokichi's friend and didn't seem to mind the lying at all, something that means a lot to Kokichi based on his Harmonious Heart Events, because it means that Gonta doesn't want to be friends with someone different, he wants Kokichi, lies and all. This is Kokichi's #1 wish.
I think that meant more to Kokichi than anything else, because this is his way of life. He leads with lies, he plays with lies, and he protects himself with lies too. He wants to keep lying and Gonta not being bothered by that is literally the exact thing that Kokichi yearns for in the best ending for his HHE.
Gonta also caught on to the times that Kokichi was extending olive branches and accepted him. It's subtle, but Kokichi did try and befriend people as long as he could do it without having to change himself and Gonta was one of the people that responded to that positively. Gonta readily befriended Kokichi, probably understanding first-hand what it's like to be an outcast because of misunderstandings and personality traits.
This is why Gonta's death (especially since Kokichi felt like he was fully responsible for it, despite what Gonta said) was so traumatic for Kokichi and why he reacts so negatively to it, he lost someone he never thought he would ever meet in the first place. More than a few of his dialogue lines have him imply that he's used to being hated for how he chooses to live his life and that he expects this kind of treatment from people, so finally finding someone who won't hate him for that and then losing that friend so quickly with his own plan had to have hurt immensely.
Going off that, Gonta is the one to convince Kokichi to remain friends with everyone and try his best for them despite how they treat him, and he also desperately begs for the others to do the same thing for Kokichi. He knew he was leaving Kokichi alone, and he wanted to try and protect him.
While the other members of the cast don't seem to remember this or care much about it after the whole "I'm the mastermind" bit, we do see Kokichi trying to protect the group after chapter 4 by trying getting rid of the motive to leave (therefore "ending" the killing game by making sure no one plays it) and by trying to remove Kaito, who has shown himself to be a harmful influence.
I think Gonta's words really got through to Kokichi, and while it did unfortunately lead to Kokichi dying for everyone's sake, Kokichi might not have tried to save everyone if it hadn't been for Gonta's last wishes. Why would Kokichi want to help people that actively hate him and bully him if not for the pleading of his greatest friend in the game telling him to keep protecting them.
In a sense, Kokichi during chapter 5 fulfills Gonta's original wish to be useful and protect everyone even at the cost of himself, with Kokichi doing exactly that.
Interested?
If you asked me for moments that I feel showcase their bond nicely so you can get a feel of it for yourself, I'd point you towards the dialogue they share during the 4th trial investigation and their meeting before the Insect Meet and Greet was very nice (you'll have to read between the lines for the former though!) If you want to see what I'm talking about, I would definitely recommend rewatching those. The moments prior to Gonta's execution are also always a good look at how much they meant to each other.
If you're really interested, I'd also recommend watching through their bonus content (LHEs, FTEs, HHEs, etc) and thinking about how their desires are reflected in each other, it's interesting to think about at the very least.
TL;DR?
Overall, they have an amazing, yet unsung, dynamic between the two of them and I would like to see more people recognize it. It's very brief and doesn't have a lot of story time, but it feels more meaningful than any of the "main" dynamics in the game with 10x the screentime. It has substance to it. It's satisfying and gratifying to watch.
It also makes fucking sense, unlike a particular dynamic that takes up a majority of the fucking story for nOTHING–

Frankly I don't know why he's called paranoid. Ouma practices what I like to call healthy doubt. He's realist about the killing game situation, considers the fact that people are able to take the worst option so that's why he wants to expose their secrets in ch2. Secrets you need to be aware of/keep in mind. Different from thinking that people will always take the worst option, assume the worst of them and rarely hope/belief/trust in people. In my opinion Rantaro or Maki might be more like that
Kokichi
I agree wholeheartedly, Kokichi just seems like a logical dude surrounded by people who refuse to think with their brains lmao
My guesses as to why he's called paranoid
Everyone is very quick to diagnose characters with shit they don't have
Everyone wants a reason to make Kokichi their uwu baby that needs Shuichi to figure him out and fix him
People keep saying that finding a middle ground between trusting people and doubting them was Shuichi's purpose, when in reality he just doubted everyone but his friends. If they see the biased Shuichi as "the right way to doubtfully believe in people" then Kokichi, who actually has a bit of sense, must seem paranoid and untrusting to them
Apparently lying means you also have to be mentally broken or something and must be incapable of trusting people
Rantaro
Rantaro did definitely seem more wary and he had some... odd looking sprites as well, but I think in the end he was more like Kokichi. If he were distrustful I don't think he would go out of his way to warn everyone about the methods and tactics monokuma was using against them. He also probably wouldn't have tried to help them by investigating or going through the despair road. If I were him I would have kept that shit to myself so that the mastermind wouldn't target me, especially since he warned Kaede about doing the same thing.
Maki
As for Maki, it mostly just seems that she really hated Kokichi and was quick to shut people out because of her no-nonsense attitude and maybe her tragic past™.
When Maki shut Kaede out, it was for a good enough reason: Kaede's plan failed, so why should she follow Kaede's suggestions again? Seems pretty simple, but I can understand it even if it's a little unforgiving.
Maki also just hated Kokichi, which probably led to her wanting to believe the worst in him to further justify her anger. Why look into or even care about someone's reasons when you can just hate them? A lot of people act like that towards people they don't like because they want to fuel their own flames.
Yet aside from that, she mostly seems chill about everything, probably because she knows that if anyone tried to kill her the only one who could stand a chance would be Gonta, and that's only if she couldn't snipe him first, so she had nothing to be scared of because of her talent.
The only times Maki actually got worried was when Kaito got punched, when Kaito coughed up blood, and when Kaito was with Kokichi because Maki wasn't able to babysit Kaito. These are all unrelated to her own wellbeing and are solely centered around her assigned crush on Kaito, and even then she wasn't nearly as worried as she should have been considering the things Kaito got up to, so I wouldn't call her paranoid either.
Conclusion
I think Miu was the only one that could be seen as paranoid because she had the best opportunity to escape without killing, but she didn't trust anyone enough and so she tried to "graduate" from the academy anyway. I don't think the other characters would choose to let everyone else be executed if they knew there was an option that allowed them to escape without anyone dying, so Miu is definitely the odd one out.
There are also a couple moments in the game where we see Miu suspect people, telling Monokuma that he should kill everyone but her, and just generally not wanting to work with everyone unless asked or forced to by the game.
She's really helpful at some points in the story and it was nice of her to make that anti-exisal equipment for everyone when she wasn't even going to join up with them, but she seems to be looking out for herself more than anything else during the game.
I don't really blame her for that considering the circumstances, but it's definitely a more antisocial approach when compared to the others. So yeah, if I had to pick someone out of the cast it would probably be miss Miu.

I had to clip the conversation again, but here's the long and short of it.

It's amazing how Kokichi and Angie figured it out before Shuichi even after Tsumugi just got done telling Shuichi that this place doesn't really seem like a school at all and looked to be built just for them. We've been over this but you're still behind the others...

I actively got frustrated playing as Shuichi because I liked Kokichi so much and constantly seeing Shuichi misunderstand and disliking him made me :( . and then I get into the fandom, and see people ignoring all that and insisting that the two characters are perfect for each other and any other ships with the two of them are Bad (especially m/f ships, because this is the DR fandom we're talking about) and I just-- :((( ??? We talk about what a rat bastard Kokichi is, but also the man deserves a better fucking ship than to get stuck with a detective that actively avoids trying to understand the truth to his intentions.
I don't get why they all hated him so much in the earlier chapters. It always seemed like they hated him for no real reason at all, as if he were the designated punching bag.

I can't tell if he's disappointed that they're trying to brush off the flashback light or if he's disappointed that they believed any of it despite it being so obviously faked.
Leaning towards the latter.
Also Shuichi back at it again with disliking Kokichi I see.

Hehe,,glad we can help you stay more active on the sight ^^'' oh and thoughts on og*ku ((i feel like youve already givin ur opion on this if u have u can just ignore this ask))
Positives:
Why their dynamic is my favorite in V3 and why it works so well.
Common counter arguments:
"Kokichi hated Gonta/wanted him to die/used him in Chapter 4!"
Here's my analysis on Chapter 4's trial + this extra post because I know some people think that Kokichi was being toxic to Gonta in this chapter, but that doesn't make sense if you look at Kokichi's actions before, during, and after the trial.
I'd also advise taking a look at Gonta's dialogue after the trial but before the execution where he tells everyone that he knew what he was doing and that he was willingly to accept responsibility for his part like a CHAMP.
"Kokichi manipulated Gonta into doing the Insect Meet and Greet!"
That's not actually true, Gonta knew about the plan and agreed to it beforehand.
As for why he was upset with Kokichi in Chapter 2, it wasn't because he lied about the nature of the plan (because Gonta already knew that) it was because Kokichi lied about liking bugs, which sends Gonta into a rage.
He would've raged the first time he met Kaede and Shuichi if Kaede hadn't lied and told him that they liked bugs, so we know that this isn't exclusive to Kokichi either.
Conclusion:
Oug*ku good.
