What do you think about the retellings of JTTW, where Tang Sanzang proves to be able to stand up for himself or that he literally can also fight alongside Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing and even Bai Long Ma/Ao Lie (who lately I've noticed has started to grab more fame and recognition, being more and more dynamic and part of the group than just being a simple background character)?

I think the most famous version of this kind of retellings is "The Westward" (I like the design of that Tang Sanzang)

Oh hey! Good to see you again too @wiings-kwami! And in regards to your question, while I fully appreciate that this is a very inadequate answer I guess that depends on how it's used asdfrweadf. TBH the idea that Tang Sanzang can fight back against or at least somewhat defend himself against yaoguai is a potentially really neat idea! As is in the og classic he is the second most static member of the pilgrim group, and this could provide an opportunity for him to be active and explicitly grown and change instead of regularly acting as the embodiment of the "damsel in distress" trope lol. THAT SAID, I can also easily see this being used to shove the monk into the role of "badass fighter" and keep him a static character that way...I know everyone makes fun of Tang Sanzang for crying and falling off his dragon horse, and while some of this is warranted tbh I feel like a more interesting story could be told by addressing WHY he's crying so much rather than putting him in the opposite direction as a stoic fighter. So at the end of the day and as with any other trope out there, I'd say making Tang Sanzang into a warrior monk is potentially a cool idea, but it's less about him being that and more about how it's executed.

To be honest, the most worrying thing about this chapter to me is that Zeke shows up at the end. I figured that’s how this battle kept going, but I thought that would be the last ‘surprise’ of the volume. A next month thing.

If he’s already here, signs point to the handshake that breaks the world happening at the end of next chapter.

Even having no idea what Eren’s up to, but full confidence that he’s not a hundred percent on board with Zeke’s ideas for what they should be up to... Do Not Want. Zeke and Eren are like bulls in china shops (disregarding what Mythbusters says about that). Whatever’s coming, it isn’t going to be a tiny thing like brainwashing an entire island into forgetting their history. These are young men of vision.

That’s next month’s problem, though.

This month, we get another chapter that makes me think I’m going to go back to my Return to Shiganshina motto of wondering how pretty the anime is going to make all of this.

When we’re once again in Shiganshina. And Eren and Reiner are once again brawling.

This is not a critique, it’s just me pointing out that action scenes in this series are not the fastest way to any of the ongoing trauma elsewhere in the series being resolved. ...And my natural reaction to action-heavy chapters when I’m writing these posts is to kind of gesture at the chapter and be all, “you saw it, didn’t you?”

But that’s, of course, underselling all the emotional drama we still have to sort through. Starting with Eren’s upgrade to not just confusing his friends and the audience at large, now even Yelena is probably wanting to put her head in her hands and just wonder why the fuck.

With the answer apparently being that Eren feels like beating up Reiner.

Let’s put all that in the Later tab, because Eren and his problems of being Eren deserve a little more pondering before I say anything. ...Besides one reminder remark that Eren’s inherited the Attack Titan, and we haven’t yet really delved into hat it means that Titans seem to have their own outlines of a personality. With Paths moving to the forefront, that might be changing.

Or Eren just feels like beating up Reiner.

Moving on, it’s time for everyone’s favorite topic!

Fuck Marley.

This is one of those story elements I will be much less hissy at once the story is over. Unless the story does something stupid. But for now, every single time we focus on the non-Warrior conflicts of Marley, my only regret is that Zeke and Eren’s massacre in their country was so limited.

Hyperbole obviously in effect, but

Let me try to start somewhere that isn’t mindless screaming about how Marley can just go fuck right off, and how being relieved that a child soldier you’ve crafted has made it back to safety doesn’t actually make you a better person, you absolute fuckwit.

As the narrative stands, the people from Marley are the only ones with power who aren’t fucking over their personal allegiances. Zeke’s screwed over everyone. Eren has actively damaged his friends. The 104th is powerless unless they want Armin to start really making things explode.

The Warriors and Magath have a very straightforward mission, and they’ve kept to it. This is their military operation, and there’s a plan. It makes sense that they’re kind of rolled into the protagonist role of this battle. Eren’s being fucking Eren, the Warriors have legitimate grief, they’re trying to save a child behind enemy lines...

Here, as ever, is the problem.

Fuck Marley.

Just... just to try and find some words to my indignation that only this particular set of characters can capture so well, Helos. Helos the hero. The untainted, hollow hero.

The hero who secretly made a pact with both sides to end the violence and spend a century lying about how they found peace, leaving an immeasurable mark on the state of Eldians until Willy strolls up one fine day and decides, you know what, maybe we can cool it with all this lying, but we absolutely need to go after the same targets all that lying created.

Willy was willing to die for his beliefs.

His belief was that throwing Paradis under the bus was perfectly acceptable.

Marley is full of stubborn people determined to see their missions out, but every single time we approach their point of view, it drives me nuts that we are spending any time humanizing the desire for Marley to come out the winner here.

Galliard, you have a legit beef with Eren. He uses you to kill someone you could have counted among your comrades, and the trauma alone would make any desire for vengeance immediately acceptable.

But ah yes, your home town.

I know Marley keeps their people in ignorance. I know Eldians considering that their grandest aspiration in life is to die is possibly more dangerous than simply living that fate out. I know Galliard’s mostly been involved in wars that are about fighting people they’re at war with, and protecting his people.

Unless I’ve been paying even less attention than I think, they’re in Shiganshina.

Marley cracked the walls open like a nut. They used children to do it. They committed genocide without once getting their hands dirty in order to maybe drag out the Founding Titan.

All of this built on the backs of Eldians. Having the Founding Titan means having a compliant Eldian. Having Titans at all means having Eldians.

Eren’s assault on Liberio is awful. It mirrors the horror of Shiganshina, and nothing about how the plot progresses is going to make me okay with what he and Zeke went for there.

But in terms of the devastation caused?

Eren’s willingness to kill children to accomplish his goal of wiping out the top brass is disturbing, and can’t match Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie’s naive willingness to kick down a door when they’re 10-12.

Liberio is still only one town.

Opening up the walls kills a lot more than one town. Some of it through Paradis’ own tactics, but as much as I like Galliard, and understand how much he’s lost...

Marley destroys a third of Paradis because it can.

No declaration of war, no warning. They treat Paradis the way they treat all Eldians: As a resource Marley is so entitled to they have no need to recognize them as anything more.

What Eren does is appalling and wrong.

But Galliard’s continued focus on that is its own kind of sickening. These people have never been confronted with the horrors they’ve participated in. Your home town, Galliard? Your brother?

How about your home town, your mother, your friends, a third of your country, and watching your own government send out a further 20% of the remaining population on a suicide mission so the rest of them survive.

All from a completely unprovoked attack.

Eren at least waits to hear Willy’s declaration of war.

Galliard’s motives are honestly very understandable, but compared to the history we’ve lived through with the Paradis side, it’s nothing. It’s a whining child who hasn’t realized that a world beyond him and his exists.

Then there’s Magath, and his line about putting an end to a hundred years of resentment.

What, resenting the island? Thanks to a lie your hero agreed to?

Resenting titans? After using them as your primary military force since the second you were given back your autonomy?

You people fucked up your own world! Marley policy has kept the fear of titans alive. Marley’s current strategy is bringing the hatred focused on them back to an island that, as far as they know, hasn’t had any interaction with the outside world for a hundred years.

Paradis isn’t perfect. Entire essays written solely about how fucked up Paradis is would be very easy to write. Armin’s probably written about thirty, in-universe.

What they’ve done is still not comparable to what Marley’s done.

The characters might feel the emotional weight similarly, but the crimes are not anywhere close to the same.

So having these guys arguing that they’ll claim the Founding Titan and save the world? The world they didn’t think twice about breaking whenever it was convenient for them? The world they only now care about because the strength of titans is turning obsolete?

Fuck Marley.

Reiner’s honestly my favorite part of this chapter, even if he continues to cling to the wrong theme. He’s upset over Gabi and Falco, but he looks at Eren, and he actually sees Eren. Reiner is someone who has stopped trying to find a moral high ground in this fight. He has his mission, he has his people, and trying to work out the rest is insanity.

They’ll all be dead soon.

They’re all miserable.

“What do you get... from living any longer?! Eren... I’ll end this for you.”

I said a few chapters back that this is a series about suicide. It’s Zeke’s entire motivation; getting the rest of the world to the place he is. It’s time for them all to end. Here, Reiner, despite theoretically being on the anti-Zeke side, is expressing the exact same sentiment.

They’re all going to die anyway. They’ve all suffered enough. It can be over. Ending it can be an act of kindness.

Eren agreed with that once, too.

“At the very least… I want you to end it all for me.” --65

The answer he got then was very simple.

“When I see someone crying, saying… no one needs them… I want to tell them… It’s not true.”

What do you get from living any longer?

Whatever you want. It’s your fucking life. No one else has the right to decide when it should end.

Now we get to the fun stuff, because that look Eren has comes directly after Reiner spouts his big brother’s entire philosophy. Mentally, but this is a story. Eren’s most furious look comes from something he once asked for. Reiner trying to bring him to a peaceful end.

That thing Zeke wants for all Eldians.

That’s what comes before Eren’s emotions rise back to the surface.

Yelena and her merry crew don’t understand why Eren goes ahead and starts this fight, and really, neither do I. As a beacon for Zeke to follow, it’s a seriously dangerous one, and Marley knowing exactly where Eren is means they don’t have to worry about accidentally killing other human-sized bodies on the ground. Hiding and recollecting probably would have worked out better.

But we’re far enough into this arc that I’m really mostly fine with Eren doing things that don’t make sense. If the answer is just that he’s emotionally fragile enough that seeing Reiner meant he had to fight Reiner, I’d accept that.

Then Zeke shows up, and. Siiiigh.

I don’t know what happens next, but Eren looks so young when his big brother steps in to help. Eren’s been fighting alone this entire time. He doesn’t seem to like Yelena or Floch. He’s taken steps to make sure his friends stay away from him. He accepts the assistance freely offered, but his mission is his own.

My personal opinion is that Eren has very different plans for the Founding Titan’s powers than what the narrative has told us. His furious fight for life in this very chapter is a point in favor of that.

But whatever it’s used for, there’s one other person in the world who’s trying just as hard to reach him.

Zeke and Eren are doing, and will do, horrible things. Eren’s motives might not line up with Zeke’s, but Zeke is still his partner in this. Zeke knows what it’s like to cut off everything else except their mission. He knows what it’s like to be alone without an ally he can fully trust with his vision for the world.

They might have different visions, but Zeke understands everything Eren has gone through, and in Eren’s most desperate moment, he shows up.

Until the end of whatever happens, his big brother is fighting to make it to his side. He’s here to protect Eren and change the world with him.

Eren’s a disaster, but the look on his face sells how hard all of this has been. Since he was fifteen, he’s been shouldering the fate of humanity alone. Now, he has someone in his corner who’s held that burden for even longer.

It probably won’t go well. Even this bond might fall to pieces if their philosophical differences come out.

But for right now, Eren has his big brother.

Oh and in other news, Gabi paying attention to all the wrong things means that Marley knows the requirements for making the Founding Titan go zoom.

Next chapter is just going to end with Eren and Zeke’s hands finally meeting. The last page is a blank white one that says ‘the heart’.

...I do kinda love that while this is going on, everyone in the cells just assumes that the Wall Titans are now walking around. SURPRISE! you’re at war. That’s going to be fun to cope with when your building inevitably suffers a hole.

Mexico 

Mexico was an absolute whirlwind and for that reason I would love to return to delve deeper into it, see more, and get a slightly more rounded experience, however I still loved my time there. A combination of cheap flights, and wanting to be in Cancun on Saturday night, meant my trip was pretty oddly organised on the face of it. I began with two nights in a hostel in the centre of Mexico City. It was an odd place to arrive the first night. I was immediately stuck by the number of police, standing on practically every street corner. It found it hard to decide if this made me feel safer or not! The Spanish also felt very different from what I had become accustomed to in Peru. Much harsher, and with less personal sympathy for my inadequacies. I found a cheap bar and had an early night. I was also fairly annoyed at myself for making a mistake I had already made on my trip, of picking a massive hostel more suited to school trips. You may remember this happened to me in Sydney. I think my only thought was the great experience at the Buenos Aires hostel, which was also fairly big. Luckily my room which I had to myself the first night, shared a bathroom with another adjoining room, where Will and Alicia were staying. They were from California and Texas respectively, and I spent the next day wondering around the city with them. 

On day two myself and Will went on a free walking tour the hostel had put on, though sadly it was probably the worst I’ve done. Which is saying something as Christchurch was pretty awful. Mexico had so much to offer, but we were taken to the government building, which housed the department for education I think. To its credit all 3 floors had some pretty impressive murals on all the walls, however we were convinced our tour guide was purely interpreting them in his own way, like we could ourselves, as opposed to delivering actual knowledge. Will and I bugged him with more questions than he was wanting, and I seem to remember he eventually told us that there is actually very little written about the murals, so he has a difficult job. At this point we thought it best to leave the tour and forge our own path through the chaos. We walked through a market for a bit before meeting Alicia, who come to think of it may have only flown in that morning. We had a few drinks, before going up Mexico city’s tallest building, which had some pretty decent panoramic views, despite the smog. Anyone that knows me, and certainly anyone that has been reading this blog, will be well aware that I love a good view. What in a somewhat pathetic way really thrills me, is that these views have been unbelievably varied over the trip. Highlights would be the night hike in Hong Kong, one of my favourite skylines of the trip. A week later I was on Koh Samui off the Thailand coast, riding a scooter up a hill to see sunset over the beach. Then there’s of course New Zealand, where the treks were absolutely awe inspiring. Santiago’s funicular did a pretty decent job, and now I was looking across the chaotic sprawl of what was once the world’s most populated city. We spent that evening looking for a bar with little success. Myself and Will were sent in the direction of couple of Mexico’s hip/bar areas, and as we aimlessly walked through the streets we were met with little success. One of my biggest disappointments of Mexico was failing to find these areas, and hopefully I’ll be able to link up with a local when I next visit. We still had more luck than an Australian guy in our hostel, who from mishearing one letter of a place name, had ended up in the city’s gay quarter, which he made clear to us was not his intention. 

The next day I did a much improved walking tour of the city. It was actually more like a lesson in the history of the nation, illustrated by buildings and monuments, but did a good job of demonstrating how the city was formed, and the tour guide was excellent, I then flew to Cancun that evening. Mexico city’s airport look very central on the map, but the traffic can mean you actually have to leave 45 minutes for the 5 mile journey if going at peak times. As soon as I landed 2 hours later in Cancun I was hit by the wall of heat. This was not as bad as Austin turned out to be, but was still a step up from the city. I walked the 5 minute trip to my hostel and checked in. The hostel had looked pretty amazing both on the website and by the reviews, and it was one of my favourites of the trip. It was laid out very similarly to the ‘Love Island’ villa, a reference I’m not sure all readers of this blog will be able to relate to. There was also the added bonus of free dinner and breakfast, both of which were excellent. The pool was also great to cool off, and as a social aspect. My hope in Cancun was to meet a load of Americans. Mostly because I’ve had a good time with them so far, and I assumed it was where a lot of them come for the summer. It was then a bit of a shock when I joined a circle of chairs to find that the hostel was about 75% British and Irish. I’m still not sure why this was the case, given Mexico is a <3 hour flight from so many large American cities. I don’t remember all the names, but I got along well with another Will, who had been schooled in Dubai, but was about to go to Bristol University to do Medicine. I also met Sabrina, who was I think a trainee primary school teacher from San Francisco. I had thought I’d go out that night, it being Friday, though it seemed there was a pattern of big nights, and no nights. Thursday had been a big one for most people at the hostel, and I was fairly happy to settle for an early night. 

Breakfast was probably the best I’ve had from any hostel. This poor cook stood in an absolute sweat box of a kitchen, and was happy to cook you omelettes with your choice of filling, subway style. We went to the beach that day with a few others, I’m struggling with names but I can always remember nationalities. At times it annoyed and confused Americans when I would refer to them as Colorado, Arizona, Seattle or Buffalo, but it’s what always sticks with me, over the names themselves. So in this case there was a Dutch and a German girl, as well as an extremely irritating French-Canadian who went by the name of Swanny. He spent a considerable amount of time telling us about the factories he owns in China, while being a waiter at college. I’ve learnt not to question these people as it’s just not worth the effort. After a day at the beach where I probably burnt, we did go for a big night out at a club called ‘The City’. The hostel did an all-inclusive deal that got you transport (which turned out to be 50 cents…) entry to the club, your own table, and an open bar. I was shocked to find out this would cost $50. I had budgeted for far less, but I guess you have to remember that these institutions are solely serving tourists, and are American owned. A few of us briefly considered finding our own ‘locals outlet’, but then realised with no knowledge of the local area, little Spanish, and with the hostel organising the main night, we might as well just do it as a one off experience. I’m sure there’ll be some pictures in this, but it was pretty incredible. As the largest club in Central and South America it was just enormous, and more like an arena than a club. Safe to say I can’t remember a huge amount of this night past the initial amazement the size. I did for an unknown reason choose to jump in the pool when we returned to the hostel at about 4 in the morning. For this I was told to leave the premises or go to bed. Soaking wet, I sat outside for a while and I think dried off while dozing off to sleep. Later in the morning at about 5 I think Will turned up outside in an uber. I remember he left pretty early in the night. What made little sense was that on closer examination his uber had departed from a few hundred metres away from Cancun Airport. He had no clue how he’d ended up there, it’s about a 30 minute drive from the club. One theory is that he fell asleep on a bus going the wrong direction but I’m still not sure. 

The next day we visited Playa Delphinas, an absolutely stunning beach with picture perfect white sand and turquoise waters. Following the pattern, it was another quiet night, bar a beer pong tournament. I knew my success in this field had peaked back in Buenos Aires with Roy, so chose to sit this one out. The next day was a flight back to the city. I told you it was a bit of a mad trip. I’m not sure what I think of Cancun. I’m sure if you stay in one of the many resorts it can be a lovely place to holiday, but I’m not it has anything you wouldn’t possibly find cheaper in Europe. The issue is that the whole town is run on its tourists, and so finding Mexican prices, which was possible in the capital, was not here. I would possibly give it another go, but would prefer to see the nearby Tulum, or the pyramids at Chichen Itza. Having already ticked off 2 of the modern wonders on this trip (Great Wall of China and Machu Picchu) I was gutted not to have time to make the day trip to the Yucatan. 

On my return to the City I had booked a hotel for two nights. I had the money spare and it was only $25 a night. What I didn’t know, was that I was to be upgraded to the room with a huge Jacuzzi.. This was unbelievable news, and a situation I was desperate to share. I met up with Will, and Alicia that evening who were still at our hostel, and we played drinking games with a load of Dutch guys that evening before being kicked out. The next day I was pleased most of our group, plus some German girls and Israeli guys fancied visiting the pyramids of Teotihuacan. This partly made up for missing Chichen Itza. We could have done with a guide book as the Wikipedia page was fairly useless, as was the signage. We hung on the back of a couple of tour groups, but concluded that these guides went a lot slower, and in far more detail than we would have liked. It was built and largely functioned between 100 and 700AD. A lot of it was destroyed in the 6th Century. I think the story loosely goes that the Mayans built it and lived there, before the Aztecs decided they liked the look of it, and defeated the Mayans to take it. It is a hub for Archaeologists and I think still has a lot to be found. There’s a lot of controversy over the fact the dividing president Diaz somewhat rebuilt it in 1910 when he was trying to make Mexico City like the cultural capitals of Europe, and he may of destroyed some of the original stonework. Wikipedia also claims to me now that the government agreed on some proposals to build a Walmart there before they were defeated by UNESCO. That night those of us that went to the pyramids, along with a couple of English girls who moved in that evening, ended up back at my room in the hotel, with some drinks. Once you’ve seen a photo of the size of the jacuzzi, it would feel stupid to keep it to myself. In the morning having had very little sleep, I flew into the heat wall that was Austin.

A Cool History of Ice Cream

It’s been said that Dolley Madison, wife of president James Madison, helped bolster support for her antisocial husband in Washington by being a gregarious and charming hostess. Her celebrated parties often included music, elaborate dinners, and plenty of drinks.

For dessert, there was oyster ice cream.

In the early 1800s, there were no accepted rules about how to flavor, prepare, or even serve ice cream, other than the fact it had to be done rather quickly. An absence of mechanical refrigeration meant that chefs relied on ice houses--where large chunks of ice were stored--and elaborate, hand-cranked machines in order to dish out the good stuff. Enjoying ice cream was an event normally only enjoyed by society’s elite. How did we get from there to producing 1.54 billion gallons of it annually? To answer that, we’ll need to delve into the history of ice cream.

No one is entirely sure who first had the notion to prepare a sub-zero dessert treat. Stories abound about Alexander the Great snacking on snow flavored with honey and nectar and of Roman emperors sending lackeys out to fetch snow from the mountains for a primitive sno-cone.

“Whether it started in China or Italy, no one was really keeping record,” Amy Ettinger, author of the just-released Sweet Spot: An Ice Cream Binge Across America, tells Mental Floss.

It’s likely that credit for mixing dairy products into a frozen confection should belong to the Tang Dynasty of the 7th, 8th, and 9th centuries. Using milk from cows, goats, or buffalo, lowered into ice pools in metal tubes, this embryonic version of ice cream was a treat for emperors. A thousand years later, Italy and France began toying with their own versions of the dessert. A milk-based sorbet recipe originated in Naples; the French used cream, sugar, and orange-flavored water to make “fromage,” though it contained no cheese.

Ice cream’s delicious pilgrimage from Europe to America is a little easier to track. According to Ettinger, it was George Washington who helped popularize the treat among high society beginning in the 1770s. Washington learned of ice cream through Norborne Berkeley, the royal governor of the colony of Virginia, who served it at a dinner Washington attended. “Washington loved it and started serving it at state functions,” she says.

At Washington’s estate at Mount Vernon, a 300-piece set for making and serving ice cream took up permanent residence in the kitchen. Because it was such a labor-intensive ordeal, serving ice cream became a status symbol. “There were bragging rights to it,” Ettinger says. “It became very popular in Washington at very elite functions.”

Ice cream continued to be a rare treat, with political figures like Thomas Jefferson and the Madisons reserving it for special occasions. Returning from France, Jefferson even jotted down a recipe for it that called for two bottles of “good cream,” six eggs, and a half-pound of sugar flavored with vanilla and then frozen. As the use of insulated ice houses grew, so did ice cream’s popularity: Some July 4 parties in Washington held sightings of the delicacy that surprised people for being frozen in the heat of summer.

Throughout the 1800s, a series of technological innovations helped usher ice cream from exclusive events to mainstream availability. Refrigeration, homogenization, and delivery methods made the manufacture and distribution of the frozen treat possible. Ice cream was no longer part of class distinction.

According to Ettinger, 1904 was a big year. That was when the ice cream cone was popularized at the St. Louis World’s Fair, putting an end to the labor-intensive process of washing ice cream dishes at soda fountains. Suddenly, ice cream could be taken on the go, and ice cream parlors didn’t need to invest in dishwashers.

The next big shot in the arm was Prohibition. When the 18th Amendment was enacted in 1920, a number of bars and saloons converted to soda fountains, exchanging one indulgence (alcohol) for another (sugar). Even beer makers like Yuengling and Anheuser-Busch started making the sweet stuff. “That first year of Prohibition, a tremendous amount of ice cream was consumed,” Ettinger says. “Soda fountains became a social hub.” Between 1916 and 1925, American ice cream consumption went up by a staggering 55 percent.

The deluge of ice cream was accompanied by the introduction of novelties: the Eskimo Pie (ice cream wrapped in a hard chocolate shell), the Drumstick (ice cream wrapped in peanuts), and Good Humor bars that came on a stick for getting plump while on the go. Even with the end of Prohibition in 1933, it would take the Great Depression and a world war to get Americans to stop eating so much ice cream.

“With the lack of sugar, production of ice cream fell off,” Ettinger says. But troops were spared any cravings. “Ice cream was served to troops for combat fatigue. It was prescribed by military doctors.” The Navy even had an ice cream barge that could produce 10 gallons every seven minutes.

Since the end of the war, virtually nothing has stopped ice cream’s dominance as the preferred way to combat a hot summer’s day. Häagen-Dazs broke the mold of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry with a wider variety of flavors, while mix-ins like Dairy Queen’s Blizzard kept shifting the goal posts for premium treats. Ice cream had become so closely identified with America that it was often the first thing sampled by people arriving on Ellis Island.

According to Ettinger--who began her research in San Francisco with the artisanal shops there and went on ride-alongs on ice cream trucks--ice cream’s appeal is simple. “It’s the quintessential American dessert,” she says.

Despite the variety of flavors, no one seems as keen on oyster ice cream as Dolley Madison. Perhaps that’s because it was likely little more than frozen oyster chowder with the oysters drained out. Gross? Maybe. But no history of ice cream would be complete without it.

Formerly known as Throwing Shade, she’s ditched that moniker to embrace the name she was born with. Readying her debut album for Ninja Tune, ‘Weighing of the Heart’ is a big statement in two ways: first, because she’s taken her real name to stand proudly as a female British Asian artist making music and, secondly, because she’s moved her music in a bolder, more expansive direction. Recorded in her studio space, ‘Weighing of the Heart’ is the product of self-directed, freely-evolving recording sessions; with a more confident, inclusive approach to her influences, it’s a complete picture of where Nabihah stands as an artist… We talk to Nabihah about getting out of her comfort zone, tennis and The Simpsons…

TSH: What was the thought process in going into the studio without a real plan in mind for ‘Weighing of the Heart’?

Nabihah: Well, I went into the studio without any inhibitions and I didn’t think too much about how I wanted the record to sound overall. I’m kind of bored of how we often hear the same contemporary electronic music these days. I mean you can really hear when a track is trying to be similar to another track, which is why I took the opportunity to make my music veer off into different directions.

TSH: From a production standpoint, what sort of aims did you have in mind?

Nabihah: I knew that I wanted to include a lot more live instrumentation, which was mainly achieved via the guitar. Up until recently, I’ve mainly been including the guitar in my live performances, but this is the first time that it appears in my music and takes centre stage.

TSH: You were also getting out of your comfort zone with regards to using your voice a lot more this time around?

Nabihah: Yeah, and it was so hard! I really pushed myself with this record and adapting the music for the live show is proving to be very challenging too. I’m so happy I took myself out of my comfort zone, otherwise I wouldn’t have made this record. This album marks the first time that I’ve tried to write a proper song and doing so by using vocals properly with lyrics. Once I managed to do this, it felt amazing!

TSH: The album deals with various themes, including existential doubt...

Nabihah: Yeah, this is just something that I think about all of the time, and so it was inevitably going to come out in my music. The feeling of existential doubt is definitely heightened these days with all that’s going on, we’re all feeling a lot worse than normal.

TSH: What drew you to delving into Egyptian mythology and judgment in the afterlife?

Nabihah: Well, I’m really interested in ancient Egypt, ancient Egyptian mythology and their belief systems. I decided to use the imagery of a ceremony from ‘The Book of the Dead’ for the cover because it just seemed to fit. I guess I was fascinated with how Egyptians back then used to take your heart out of your body because they believed the heart was at the centre of your consciousness, your truth and the creativity inside of a human body. And so they’d weigh the heart against a feather, which was taken from the head of the Goddess Maat. If the heart balanced, it meant that you were a noble human and you lead a good life, and you’d achieve rewards in the afterlife. However, if the heard did not balance, then it would be fed to a beast! I just found it intriguing that the whole process was about the afterlife. It all just got me thinking about why we want to live and what makes us want to live, plus I like how in ancient religions males and females are often on an equal pedestal, whereas modern religions are totally patriarchal.

TSH: What was the process like in bringing together ‘Something More’?

Nabihah: Whenever an idea of a song becomes solid and concrete it always feels like and outside force taking over and dictating the direction of it, which was the case with this song. When I started making it and getting into it, I could just tell that it was going to be the first single and the first song that I played to people.

TSH: Moreover, ‘Eternal Passion’ touches on the notion of pushing through mortality...

Nabihah: Yes, and ‘Eternal Passion’ is also about looking at life and what we feel like when we are living. The song also focuses on our daily struggles and our reactions to them. I was thinking about how my pain and struggles are nothing compared to those suffering in third world countries for example. However, we’re all humans trying to have a life and we each have life experiences which we struggle through. I just feel that there has to be some kind of common goal that bonds us all. I don’t know what the answer is and I only have first world problems, therefore I remember to be grateful for what I have.

TSH: How was your visit to China in recent times?

Nabihah: Oh, China is crazy, but I love it. It was the fourth time I went out there and it was quite intense too. I was located in Beijing when they were having their big communist party that they have once every ten years, so the atmosphere was palpable with police everywhere. But yeah, China is an astonishing place. The feeling I get when I’m there is similar to when I went to Russia. Both of these countries are sort of demonised in Western media and we’re always told negative things about both countries. However, when I was in China everyone there was really friendly, also the culture and history is so mind-boggling. I really appreciate how hardworking everyone is out there - the locals sacrifice so much to live a good life.

TSH: You also remembered to pull out your selfie with Roger Federer after his Wimbledon success this year...

Nabihah: Ha! I only decided to share it online because he won Wimbledon again. Still though, I do think it’s really cool that I’ve got that selfie with him.

TSH: Speaking of tennis. You also tweeted about Rafael Nadal’s legs...

Nabihah: Haha! Yes, like most I’m very mesmerised with his physique. It goes without saying why I mentioned his impressive legs, haha! You know, I really like watching tennis. I wish I was better at playing it, but I just get frustrated because I’m so bad! I end up just falling over.

TSH: Were you left particularly irritated when someone used your guitar and left the odour of pickled onion Monster Munch behind?

Nabihah: That was so annoying! So I share my music studio with another guy named Sam, who is really cool, however, he had some mates around in the studio with him one night. One of his mates obviously thought it would be cool to play my guitar. I normally don’t let anyone use my guitar because it’s so personal. Anyhow, when I picked up my guitar, I knew something wasn’t right. Also, it’s weird because I haven’t eaten Monster Munch in like 20 years, but I just knew it was the pickled onion flavour. The smell was so strong and it made my hands greasy. This was like 6 months ago but my guitar still has that smell, even though I’ve cleaned it with fairy liquid. I can’t get rid of the smell, it’s like it’s soaked into the fretboard. It’s so annoying.

TSH: What’s your idea of a nice period of relaxation?

Nabihah: One thing I’ve got into the habit of doing recently is watching an episode of The Simpsons every night before I go to sleep. It takes your mind off everything you’ve been thinking about during the day. The Simpsons is so clever and funny, and it’s relevant to modern life too.

TSH: Is the idea of taking listeners on a transcendental journey with your music a factor that is very crucial to you?

Nabihah: Yeah, I want take people on a transcendental journey and communicate with them on an emotive level through my music. Also, I always remember to constantly acknowledge how blessed I am and how lucky I am to be in this position. Being healthy and being able to work on what I love most in the world is a great position to be in. Just being blessed in this way gives me the energy to work as hard as I can and to make the most of it, which I hope is reflected in my music. Looking ahead, I feel very excited about the direction I’m going in.
