Fear of the dark

"Daddy?!! Daddy!", you felt like you couldn't breathe. Your night light wasn't working and you felt around but you couldn't find your phone. It seemed to be pitch black inside your room so your eyes weren't adjusting at all. It seemed to be a moonless night and unfortunately the streetlights were also out.

You’d struggled with your nyctophobia since you were a child. There had been an unfortunate event that caused a lot of deep trauma, and the only person who knew about it was your boyfriend. You could handle it for the most part until you regressed. And tonight of all night was the night you woke up deep in little space. You needed him.

"Kitten? What's going on?? Hey, baby. You're okay, I've got you.", Yeonjun felt around in the darkness, his arms immediately going around you as he sat up next to you in bed. He cooed and rocked you back and forth, trying to help you calm your breathing. He noticed how dark it was and knew that's what was triggering this panic attack. He blinked a few times, eyes adjusting enough to find his phone and turn on the flashlight, but he got an empty battery icon. He muttered a curse, hoping you didn't hear as he continued rocking you.

"It's t-too dark. Daddy 'm scared.”, you cried into his chest, struggling to calm your fast paced breaths.

The power must have been out for a while before you noticed and woke him since his phone didn't charge. 'Think, Yeonjun, think.', he thought to himself. He knew how hard it would be to calm you since when you regressed, you were terrified of the dark. Your whimpers were breaking his heart.

"You're breathing too hard. Breathe with me. In. Just like that. And out... good girl.", he praised you in a sweet and hushed voice, helping you relax a little. Your heart still anxious as you kept your eyes screwed shut in the dark.

"Come, kitten. Come lay with Daddy. You're gonna be okay.", He pulled you down with him, laying your trembling head on his chest.

A noise came from outside, sounding like someone screeched to a stop at the nearby stop sign. Undoing his work, having you hyperventilating all over again. He didn't know what time it was, but it was late and he had half a mind to go out there and tell them off if it wasn't for you shaking in his arms.

"Shh, honey. Breathe. Listen, do you hear Daddy's heart??", he whispered, drawing your attention. When he felt you nod against his chest, he listened for a few more deeper breaths before he continued.

"That's good, kitten. Just focus on that, listen to Daddy's heartbeat, little one.", he cooed, stroking your hair gently as your crying slowed to sniffles and your breathing slowed again.

"You're doing so well, honey. So good.", he kept his voice soft and relaxed, the soft 'bum-bum' of his heart lulling you back to sleep.

"Kitten?", he whispered. Letting out a breath of relief when you responded only with deep breaths, completely relaxed against his chest.

"Sweet dreams, kitten."

The next morning.

"Good morning, my sweet kitten.", Yeonjun smiled with a soft laugh as your eyes fluttered open, meeting his deep brown ones, glowing golden from the sunlight shining in through the window.

"Mm..morning.", you yawned, still quite a bit sleepy.

"Daddy's so proud of you, little one. You were so brave for me.", he brought the back of his hand to your cheek, stroking it softly. Your heart warmed. He was always there when you needed him.

"Is the power back on??", you mumbled and cleared your throat, trying to wake up a little.

"Yeah, it came on not long after you just fell asleep, kitten. Daddy's perfect babygirl.", he rubbed his nose against yours with a hoarse, morning-voiced giggle.

"Thank you, Junnie...", you pressed your forehead against his. And no more words were spoken for a while. When he checked, you had fallen back asleep.

"My sleepy kitten.", he chuckled softly and kissed your cheek before getting out of bed to make breakfast.
