Lola Doveling ; A Motherly Touch
The sound of a child’s laugh can cure the worse wounds in the world, and a child’s cry can turn the brightest day black. And a woman called Lola knew this very well. The most loving of women, she cared for each and every child on this world, not matter what or who they were, she’d try to give every child a chance for a good life. She was a nurse in a Horrell hospital, worked at the children’s section. All of the kids would remember Lola, they all loved her. She brought hope into their eyes. But don’t get fooled, Lola is anything but a joyful woman, there is a deep, dark secret behind those happy cheerful eyes. And those caring laughs. Lola has experienced a dark moment in her life. When she and her husband decided to conceive a child, they were so excited, hopeful, they bought all of the clothing they could find, and even arranged a baby shower. The most beautiful of all. But in the next 9 months, Lola was going to find out, what true darkness feels like. Lola was about to break... Nine months later, she was sitting in her cozy fur covered chair that she always loved and adored, the chair in which she’d sit while reading the kindergartner’s stories and play games with them. And suddenly, she’d feel a sudden chill in her body, she was afraid, and suddenly she started feeling horrible pain, pain she never felt before. She screamed and yelled for her husband Gerald. He ran into the room as fast as he could and picked up Lola. They immediately got into the car and Gerald drove them off to the hospital. “What is going on Gerald!? Why is it so cold!?” She screamed and yelled, the poor woman had no idea what was about to happen to her. “I don’t know honey! Just try to keep calm! I am trying to get us there as soon as possible! It’s all going to be OK dear!” But it wasn’t going to be OK. When they arrived to the hospital the nurses immediately got Lola into a room and prepared for the childbirth. The nurses encouraged Lola to push, to focus, to be strong! And Lola tried to follow, but when it was all over, and the child was in the Nurse’s arms, it all went quiet. Not a single sound. “C-can I have it doctor, please, I wish to see my beautiful baby.” The nurse slowly looked up at Lola and said “Mrs Doveling, I don’t know how to tell you this, but, the child is dead, it was stillborn.” Lola’s life was destroyed, right in front of her eyes. The poor woman, who devoted her entire life’s energy in protecting children, giving them love and care, just witnessed a child dying. Her entire world was in ruins. She couldn’t even cry, she just sat there, after a few moments, she just said “Gerald, could you please take us back home, I think I have some work left to do, don’t want to disappoint the kids at the hospital tomorrow.” The nurse tried to explain how she couldn’t go home yet, that she needs to rest first, but Lola kept asking and begging to go home until they let her. Poor Lola, didn’t even let out a sound in the car, just looked out through the window. Sitting quietly, mourning... Lola’s irrational feeling of guilt forced her mind to crash down on itself, eating her alive, so she decided to do something, risky. One day when her husband left for work she went down into her basement, or how she liked to call it “Lola’s Laboratory.”, corny and plain, but it made her happy to have a corner of her own. This is where Lola worked on new medicine, cures for diseases, it was her main job after all. Lola went through her notebooks, her papers, her journals, everything, until she found her old project she dropped. A project  that would strengthen a young human body, give it pseudo natural immunity to certain wounds and diseases. And then Lola remembered, why she gave up on this. The story that her daddy used to tell her, about how before she was born, the doctors suggested her mother an abortion, due to noticing nonhuman DNA in her. How it could hurt her mother. But her mother wouldn’t give up on her, no matter what the price was. Lola remembered what her daddy told her about her mother, she never gave up on Lola, so Lola shouldn’t give up on those hurt kids either, no matter what. Lola opened up the blueprints and recipes and started preparing everything. Lola worked for several months until perfection, though Lola still couldn’t test the medicine on anyone. Lola decided to get dressed, grab her medicine with her and head off to the hospital, back to her job, the life she loved. But just before leaving, she remembered something. This medicine would need a name, a name to remember! So she named it Spexocain, she was never really good at names, but it was good enough in her eyes. She got out of her house and into her care, she then took off straight to the hospital. Lola was filled with energy, excitement, unruly joy. Upon arrival she was greeted by all of her old colleagues. Her old friends. But when she wanted to go back to her old job, they old her she couldn’t, told her how she didn’t work for a long time and that she couldn’t just go back to being a nurse/surgeon. After one of the nurses told her that, she noticed a young man in a stretcher being carried into the hospital and then into one of the rooms. Lola then asked one of the nurses if she could at least use her bathroom, told them that she needed to freshen up. They smiled and nodded while waving at Lola. Lola waited in the bathroom until all of the nurses left, and until all of the halls were quiet, she waiting for the moment when the boy was left with his parents. Once she noticed that it had gone quiet, Lola walked out of the bathroom and went into the boy’s room. She greeted the parents with a smile and a cheerful hello, said how she’s here while the other nurses are on their breaks. Told them how she is here to give the patient more morphine. Lola then injected the Spexocain into the boy’s IV and slowly walked out of the room. A few moments later, the boy’s body started to morph, to change. Mutate. The boy’s body got hairier, bulkier, dog like, until the boy became this huge, monstrous canine. Lola was crying, crying of joy. “I saved the boy... I saved the boy! I saved him! The boy is OK! I saved a child! It worked!”, Lola was screaming, crying and laughing while the canine started to trash the room, even hurt its parents, all while Lola was happy, happy that she saved a boy’s life. The canine soon ran out of the room and started attacking the rest of the staff. Lola noticed that there was another heavily wounded child in one of the other rooms, a girl, burnt alive, barely even breathing. “I will not let any child down, ever, I WILL PROTECT YOU! I WILL MAKE SURE YOU ARE OK!” Lola then quickly injected what ever was left of Spexocain into the girl’s IV. She then watched the girl’s wounds slowly disappearing and soon started to feel that the air was getting thick, that she couldn’t breathe well, she was sweating from the heat. The room started smoldering, getting lit on fire and soon burning. Lola was then grabbed by someone, but before she could see who she blacked out from the smoke. Next day Lola found herself laying on a hospital bed with her husband sitting next to her. “Lola, you’re awake! Oh honey you got me so scared! Are you OK?”. Poor man was so worried, but all Lola did was give him an affirmative nod. A few moments later, a person she would have never expected walked in, Jordan Klein himself, he greeted Lola, asked her how she is doing and then asked her husband to leave for a few moments. Gerald got up and walked outside of the room while blowing kisses to Lola. Jordan stood in front of Lola’s bed and asked her if she was interested in a job, a well paid one. She asked him about what kind of a job it was. He told her that all she needed to do was inject her unstable version of Spexocain into an IV of a patient called Nikki Darks and he’d make sure she had a full time, well paid job and a better home, but if she would to fail the job, he’d take everything she had from her. Lola accepted his offer. Jordan lifted his hand and shadowy flames started burning Lola’s wounds and healing them. “You should get dressed, the patient will be arriving shorting. Just before Jordan left he turned around and said “Oh and, you might need this, no need for you to go back to your house.” just as he put a syringe on her bed. Right after leaving Lola got dressed and put the unstable Spexocain into her uniform pocket. She got out of the hallway and looked around for a room with Nikki Darks in it, once she finally found it she noticed how young Nikki actually was. This dreadful feeling of fear and anxiety took over Lola. She didn’t think she could do this. She introduced herself to Nikki, told him her name, and all of the basic information. Once she looked at her patient notes, she noticed that Jordan has written her everything she needed to say. After talking to Nikki she told him she had to go get something and immediately ran out of the hospital. Poor Lola was drowning in tears. She couldn’t hurt a child, she just couldn’t. She swore to protect children, at any cost, just like her mother did with her. Lola got into her car and started driving home. While driving she could see a huge cloud of smoke coming from the street where her house was. Once she got close enough she could notice that her house was destroyed. The fire took it all. It was all charcoal and ashes. Jordan came from behind Lola and softly told her “You better become a nice little housewife that you’ve always been Mrs Doveling and clean up this mess before your loving husband comes home.” and then he dispersed into smoke and disappeared. Lola noticed that he hasn’t gotten to her lab, she quickly got down into her basement just to noticed that it was all destroyed. Her recipes and blueprints burned, everything was gone. Lola then decided to grab a piece of rope. Once the rope touched her hands, a feeling of chill went through her body. She was destroyed. She pushed some bricks under a metallic beam that was still standing and threw the rope around it.  Lola then put the rope around her neck and said her final words “I am sorry Gerald, I failed you,  I failed us, just like I failed our child.”. Just as she pushed the bricks away from her feet she could feel the rope tighten around her neck as the room got darker. A few moments later a shadowy silhouette appeared in front of Lola, told her how it can give her another chance at redeeming herself, how she can make it all right, but at a price. Lola nodded her head as much as she could and then the shadow cut her down. Lola was crying, she could barely say “Yes! Yes please!”. The shadow told her that she would not be allowed to help another child ever again, but she’d gain powers that would give her the ability to create any type of medicine, or toxic she could imagine. Lola shamefully agreed. The shadow then dispersed into smoke that went into Lola’s eyes. The shadows burned Lola’s head, filled her with straining, painful thoughts. Guilt, remorse. A voice kept repeating a line in her head “You betrayed them Lola, you betrayed them all.”. After some time Lola got up on her feet. She picked up a piece of glass from one of her broken syringes. Soon shadows swirled around the piece of glass and turned it into a syringe, a syringe filled with... Spexocain. Lola started laughing, she was hysterical. “I will help them! I can still help them! I CAN STILL SAVE THEM ALL!”
