The tactical evolution of the relationship between Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski, part 1: August-December 2014.

The first thing to be put in place between them is the play without the ball, a basic sort of play: Robert run to one side, Thomas to the other (always with crossed runs). Then it’s the pressing and the positioning to cut of the passes’ options for the opponent. In Pep’s system, in which the first and main way to move the ball forward is to use the sides with a succession of triangles plays, there is a constant need for the presence of a free player in the half-space who will be used as a relay, Thomas and Robert played this role in the upper part of the pitch. Thomas on the right, Robert on the left. When Robben and Ribery will both be back, around the middle of November, then they’ll both occupies even wilder positions to allow them both to cut through in the center. Once their job is done on the sides and the ball moves forward they both runs toward the box to wait for crosses or passes, both positioned on the same line, one at the first post, the other at the second post. At first, the passes between them were few (due to their distant positions) and quite messy but that will improve with time. The problems majorly came from Thomas’ side who’s passes were most of the time too strong and his crosses too high but slowly, first the short passes between will get better, better timed and well measured, then the crosses will turned out to be more adapted to Robert’s abilities and liking even if they will remain quite rare. They will also start to interact more with passes around the box. In conclusion, they have a very parallel way of playing which also clearly comes from the fact that Pep sees them as both as strikers and created the same role for both of them which also explain why in many games only one of them played.
