October 19, 2023 - Marquesas Kingfisher or Marquesan Kingfisher (Todiramphus godeffroyi) Found only in the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, these kingfishers live primarily in forests, especially along mountain streams and in valleys. They feed on beetles, large grasshoppers, and other insects, along with small lizards and possibly fish, capturing their prey in foliage or swooping onto it from a perch. Laying their eggs between September and January, they nest in cavities in trees and stumps. They are classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN due to habitat deterioration and predation on the one small island they still inhabit. Introduced Great Horned Owls, Common Mynas, and possibly Black Rats likely contributed to their extinction on the island of Hiva Oa.
