Legolas groaned, shifting in his bed and trying his best to ignore the massive headache he felt at the moment. What had even happened? How had he gotten this drunk? Legolas rarely joined his father in drinking at feasts, and yet it seemed he had this time ... 

Sitting up slowly he rubbed his sore head before looking around, freezing at the sight of the elleth next to him. This was impossible, ... A quick glance under the sheets to confirm his suspicions made him quickly climb from the bed and gather a robe to cover himself with. His mind was racing, how was this possible? Legolas did not like females, he had never once considered one attractive in such a way but always rather turned his gaze toward the males that crossed his path. Suddenly, he felt faint and stumbled to the nearest chair, slumping down in it. How was he going to explain this?

To be honest, the Silmarils were pretty fucking useless to Morgoth – especially when one considers that he basically turned his hands to coal by holding them. ( Like great, reach for the wrong thing in the middle of the night, and you’re going to be in agony there, buddy. Real great choice of pretty rocks. ) That begs the question, then, of why he would go to the trouble of stealing them. After all, he’s not the least bit stupid; he knew the second he saw them that they would do that. And yet, the answer is really quite simple: light is a physical representation of hope to both the elves and to his fellow Valar.

Killing the two trees just wasn’t enough, no; not only would there be a very distinct source of light, but it was, at that, a source that could be used to restore the trees and undo what he’d just done. And not only that, but to have the last remaining source of heavenly light swallowed whole by the darkness, and then brandished as a symbol of Morgoth’s victory is, in and of itself, pretty disheartening. So, all things considered, taking them was part of his plan to show everyone just how stupid and pointless their attempts at escaping the darkness was. Darkness is and always will be a very real and powerful force in their world whether or not they like or appreciate it. Not to mention the whole ‘plan and scheme as much as you like, but the world doesn’t work in your order’ thing he typically has going.
