DIsney Month: 20'000 Leagues Under the Sea
For the 10th installment of Disney month,in honor of Jules Vernes birthday(Well it was his birthday when I watched it ,this is coming out the day after ) , lets talk about one of my favorite Disney movies,20'000 LEagues Under the Sea
Tumblr media
A sea monster is sinking ships so Professor Aronnax (Paul Lukas ),and his apprentice Consiel (Peter Lorre ) join an expedition to find out the truth ,only to be flung overboard along with harpooner Ned Land (Kirk Douglas ) and find the monster is acually a submarine lead by the misanthropic Captain Nemo(James Mason) who has tossed asid the world of man for the sea
So I didnt grow up with this film,It was never on TV , I never saw it at the video store ,I've not read the copy (I have two copies though ) ,and heck the ride the film inspired closed two years before I was born , I didnt see the film till I was in collage when I found it in my Collage library .So it is with no nostalgia that I declare this one of my favorite things Disney has ever produced .I also think next to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs ,this maybe the most important film in the Disney library ,caus this film was a gamble. Disney had done live action before, but either films with his trademark animation or smaller films made in England .This was a big budget Hollywood picture , filmed in Cinemascope, with heavy special effects ,underwater sequences ,and lead by four big movie stars ,two of whom at the top of their game ,and they were making it the same time Walt was making this weird amusement park thing. The film was really expensive for Disney ,and there were some production setbacks, the most notable isa big action set piece had to be reshot .If this film failed Disney wouldve had to close doors,so the fact the film WAS A HIT ,saved DIsney. For all the good and all the bad that means ,Disney would not be here without this film
So why do I personally like this film ? Well for one I love the aesthetic ,which has gone on to be a big influence on the Steampunk movement .The Natilus ,Nemos submarine ,is one of my favorite settings of any movie, with the interiors being an example of good set designs but I also love the exteriors ,its a cool looking ship (I especially love whenever it attacks a ship and it looks like it ha big green glowing eyes ) .I also love the costume design and the use of color (I think of blue a lot when I think of this movie, from the blue of the ocean to the blue uniforms Nemo and his men wear ) .I also think the story is really good ,because while it is a sci fi adventure film but at the core it is a prision escape movie ,with Ned and Consiel trying to find a way off the ship
The cast and characters are really great in this film, because its a bit more complicated then good guy vs bad guy .Ned Land played by Kirk Douglas ,known for macho heroes (In fact he asked for an opening scene where he is seen with two women and then gets into a fight ,cause he wanted to maintain that macho image ) is presented as the square jawed tough guy leading man ,but in actuality he is a very falwed character ,a blunt id driven guy who directly antagonizes Nemo and causes a lot of trouble. He has his heroic moments,if someone is in trouble he does help but he also is very mischevious . He also is a source a lot of the films humor, from his relationship with Consiel ,his scenes with the seal Esmerelda and a goofy musical number called A Whale Of A Tale ,which is pretty darn catchy (Personal favorite song of mine, hum it constantly ) . I can Ned can be frustrating fr some viewers ,but I think he is essential to the film ,a good foil to our antagonist
Professor Aronnax ,played by prolific veteren actor Paul Lukas ,is who I would call the real lead of the film ,as he narrates the film and his arc and view of Nemo we follow . While Ned and Consiel attempt to escape, it is the Professor who makes a connection with Nemo, the Professsor is the character Nemo respects and opens up to .He is the optimist that is the foil to Nemos pessimist . I think Paul Lukas kind of gets dismissed when discussing the film ,as he has not had the same legacy as the three other big names in the film and reportedly ,could be kind of a jerk on set due to his insecurity over his trouble remembering lines ,but I think he does a pretty good job ,as a character concerned with the science and the knowledge Nemo posesses ,and what that knowledge could mean for the world
Consiel is the Professors apprentice, and the in between of Aronnax and Ned .Like Aronnax he is a man of science ,but like Ned desires to escape as he sees Nemo as a dangeorus figure . Consiel is the man of reason, less impulsive or antagonistic as then Ned but is not swayed by the marvels of the Nautilus like Aronnax is .He is played by the great Peter Lorre,an odd choice,as Lorre was more well known for playing villains or otherwise shady figures(Lorre even joked that the role he usually was cast as was taken by the giant squid that attack in the third act ) ,and this is one of the few films where he gets to play a relatively normal person,as well as show off some of his comedic skills ,and he is possibly my second favorite character in the film
The most interesting character is Captain Nemo, the films main antagonist though I hesitate to say villain as he is a bit more complicated then one would expect from a 50's film . On the surface he is a cold individual who sinks ships and has imprisioned our heroes ......however you understand his motives ,a man embittered due to the cruelity of man .He is played by one of my favorite actors James Mason (The man who I swear has one of the best voices ever ) ,and he plays not only coldness well but th elegance as well. He plays of Arronax and Ned very well,Arronax he differs in belief, and with Ned it is in manner .Mason also greatly protrays the pain of Nemo ,he scene where Nemo reveals his backstory is HEARTBREAKING as he talks and it is all on the strength of Masons acting("YOU CALL THAT MURDER !?" and the monologue that follows is some of the best bits of character work in Disney ).Both the writing of Nemo and the performance of Mason help make the movie
Another thing the film has going for it is exciting set pieces, the big one being the attack of the giant squid .,it is the most exciting scene in the film ,with a impressive squid puppet but also the brillaint idea to place it in a storm ,as if Nemo is fighting not only the Squid but nature itself .It is intense, thrilling and an excellent example of practical effects
So like I said this is my favorite Disney film,do I think it is flawless? Well I have one legit criticism which is I wish Nemos crew were more of characters ,as all we get is they are loyal to Nemo even willing to die for him .Heck the one crew member who is somewhat of a character is the First Mate played by Robert J Wilke(An actor who mostly played baddies in westerns, who I know for playing one of the bad guys in the 1956 Lone Ranger movie ) ,and he doesnt even have a name ...Kind of a criticism but not really is some of the supporting players are kind of weird, they just give weird line deliveries but honestly I love that ,there are just some odd line reads I just adore {"I say there aint no monster ,but we need MEN " is my personal favorite of the weird line reads ) and hey the focus are the four lead characters which it should be ,and no movie is perfect
I only have one question this time for question time by @themousefromfantasyland
"I just have one question: Do you ship Captain Nemo and Aronnax? Disney movie aside, reading the book it's clear that there's sexual tension between them"
I do ,there is definately tension there .They have a mutual scientist crush on each other .Good to know thats in the book ,I havent read it yet
OVerall this is a great movie in general ,a classic of science fiction and adventure,if you havent seen it watch it

"The CW hasn't been profitable since 2006."
Y'all. Even during the age of streaming, most network TV makes its money off those initial live numbers. Have you ever seen those numbers for a CW show? And I say this with fondness because I've loved my share of CW shows, but I don't know how they manage to film a paper bag with some of those viewer numbers. Even taking every short cut and budget graphic they can grab, the CW still pumps out the most expensive genres of TV to make...
To get similar live numbers to some of the live streams DSMP would get.
A Minecraft role play, for an entire year, put up similar numbers as prime time shows on a network station available almost everywhere.
A RP that cost what? Sever maintenance of a couple hundred bucks?
Just saying, we can't be surprised as network/cable tv bleeds to death that the network that relies almost entirely on fandom enthusiasm is going to be seen as unnecessary waste.
There's also something here that reminds me of why podcasts and live role plays and internet based content needs to be protected from major corporate involvement, but that's another tangent entirely.

top 10 scooby doo media tell me all about it
This was so hard but uhhhh
(btw these are not rated objectively they're rated by how much i like them so keep that in mind sometimes i do have bad/questionable taste)
1. Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost
this is hands down my favorite scooby-doo movie of all time it's so wonderful... the animators writers hell even the voice actors were clearly riding the high from zombie island this movie has all the charm and mystery of zombie island but a bit more lighthearted and now velma-centric which is all i need in a piece of scooby-doo media. 100% perfect comfort movie also shoutout to the writers for coming up with the hex girls for this film that's right this film is where the hex girls originated its all coming together best lesbian movie of all time for sure.
2. A Scooby-Doo Valentine (What's New, Scooby-Doo?)
without a doubt the best episode of the best scooby doo tv show what's new scooby doo is so good on its own but the valentine's day special goes HARD. epic chase scene dopplegangers trope AND velma and daphne are living together while fred and shaggy are roommates? fun concept fun execution surprisingly lgbt if yknow what i mean and it's also just a lgiht and fluffy + creepy valentine's day ep that holds a special place in my heart <3 PLUS daphne meta humor :D
3. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island
objectively one of the best scooby doo films (AND animated films) of all time. fucked me up as a child. was one of the most expensive direct-to-video vhs tapes the year it was released. the animation and writing went SO HARD the daphne arc is epic the mystery gang's dynamic is all i want and more the french lady is evil AND there's like 4 different mysteries stacked on top of each other and NONE of them ever get solved fuck yeah FUCK YEAH!! + the soundtrack by skycycle fucks SO HARD i listen to "it's terror time again" once a week i know all the words and did i mention "the ghost is here"??? ph my god oh my god
4. What a Night for a Knight! (Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?)
the first scooby doo episode EVER to air on tv and you watch it and you know why it was an immediate hit the opening lines are literally hilarious like [scooby and shaggy are walking down an abandoned road at night] [they notice a car on the side of the road with a suit of armor in the driver's seat] and shaggy's first reaction is to say "well it looks like he was out for a KNIGHT!!" and scooby and shaggy loose their shit laughing except the animation budget was like 1 cent exactly so its really choppy and SO GOOD also shoutout to the o.g. mystery machine for being the MOST DISORGANIZED VEHICLE i've ever seen in my LIFE i love it i love it so much
5. The Scooby-Doo Project
scooby doo went ape making a blair witch spoof and it's highly implied that all the weird events are caused by scrappy just fucking with them all what can i say it's a masterpiece. the animation is so so cheap but so so fun and the idea of the gang doing a bunch of dumbass stuff bc they're teenagers and having shaggy video it on a camcorder bc they're teenagers is beautiful immaculate showstopping and incredibly in-character shoutout to cartoon network for understanding the assignment for once.
6. Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders
shaggy gets an ALIEN GF and like aliens are real but they're KIND and they just want to GET TO KNOW US A LIL BETTER and the animation is so pretty and i love the setting but points off for having the scientists be evil that never sat right with me as a child and also POINTS OFF FOR TAKING SHAGGYS ALIEN GF AWAY WHAT WERE YOU THINKING YOU SICK FU- [i am dragged away from the hanna-barbera department of warner brothers two ppl in 'security' uniforms]
7. Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo
so so fun you can tell this was made moments before warner brothers decided to kill the entire scooby-doo wing's animation budget the story's cute the art is pretty (it's not AMAZING mind you but it's sweet and fun to look at and the chase scenes are well animated) scooby isn't over-anthropomorphized i LOVE velma's sister she's so much fun, the magic school setting is epic the mystery is superb the GRYPHON as the villain is fantastic i would watch this movie on repeat as a kid and tbh i still do 10/10 perfect for a rainy day :)
8. Scooby-Doo (2002)
i know this is a somewhat controversial opinion in the scoobysphere but this movie fucks hard. its super fun to watch the characters are just over the top enough without it being completely weird i can tell the actors did their homework, sarah michelle geller as daphne is impeccable casting and matthew lillard was so good at shaggy in this film that he's still doing shaggy's voice on-and-off for scooby doo media. i love the way the movie looks, the plot and setting are super fun, and scrappy as the villain healed so many wounds left in my soul by the scooby doo and scrappy doo show.
9. Mystery 101 (Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!)
okay so i was reluctant going into be cool scooby doo but it's hilarious the daphne characterization is on point (they make her weird she's a weirdo you see these puppets she never takes them off her hands) and OF COURSE velma would have the dewey decimal system memorized. be cool scooby doo isn't my favorite of the incarnations of the mystery gang but this episode is so funny and definitely worth a rewatch every now and then!!
10. The Caped Crusader Caper (The New Scooby-Doo Movies)
this episode is literally so so dumb (affectionate) but it's hilarious and very fun i love watching batman and robin run around with the mystery gang i truly cannot say if this piece of scooby media was actually good or if i just loved it bc it was like one of the 3 scooby doo dvds i actually owned (the dvd itself was the brave and the bold crossover collection with 3ish eps on it) but it still holds a special place in my heart :D
so yeah that's about it!! a lot of these replies are very biased and i'm sure my opinions will change soon but this is it for now. also side note but there definitely would be at least 1 A Pup Named Scooby-Doo episode on here but it's been so long since i've rewatched that series that i can't remember exact episodes. the one where shaggy's bike gets stolen / the counterfeit money one is really good!! 10/10 understood the assignment.
