The International Press Institute IPI, the Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers, ESIEA, and the journalist himself have condemned the Greek Supreme Court’s arrest warrant against the TV journalist and publisher Petros Kousoulos.

The Supreme Court’s Prosecutor issued an arrest warrant against Kousoulos for publishing confidential documents on the National Intelligence Service NIS’s surveillance of his newspaper MPAM.

MPAM reported that the NIS wiretapped the telephone conversations of two former officials during the first half of the left-wing SYRIZA-ANEL’s government in 2016.

The wiretapping was about the transfer to a company of Qatari interests of an entire area in the mountains of Zakynthos; a scandal that was widely known at the time, but which Greek media did not cover.

Kousoulos himself said it was “unthinkable that in 2022, in a well-organized country like Greece, a journalist would be prosecuted for simply doing his job. I was surprised at the decision of the Prosecutor’s Office, which instead of shedding light on the case and finding the real culprits, issued a warrant for my arrest. All this is a violation of the freedom of the press.”

“We condemn the order of the arrest of Petros Kousoulos,” said a press release by ESIEA, announcing that it will seek a meeting with the Prosecutor to discuss all matters concerning journalists.

Greece is embroiled in a wiretapping scandal, nicknamed “predator gate”. The Supreme Court has not investigated who used and sold the illegal spyware “predator”. Instead, it issued a warrant against a journalist who revealed the state surveillance, which worries Greek journalists.

“I find it unthinkable that in 2022, in a well-organized country like Greece, a journalist would be prosecuted for simply doing his job. I was surprised at the decision of the Prosecutor’s Office, which instead of shedding light on the case and finding the real culprits, issued a warrant for my arrest. All this is a violation of the freedom of the press,” Kousoulos told BIRN on Friday.

“At a time when the political and social life of the country is shaken by the revelations about the scandal of government surveillance, the Prosecutor’s Office spends its time hunting journalists, instead of standing firm in its institutional role and investigating who orchestrated the wiretapping scandal,” Vangelis Triantis, a legal editor at the Greek media outlet Documento, told BIRN.

“The attempted criminalization of journalism aims at intimidating those journalists who in future make similar revelations about the wiretapping scandal. The journalist’s job is to publicize and inform public opinion,” added Triantis.

OnePlus and Qualcomm Tease Big Improvements for the OnePlus 12

We're still a bit of time away from the official launch of the OnePlus 12, although this hasn't stopped OnePlus from teasing fans and potential buyers about its upcoming flagship smartphone. More recently, the company announced that it has been working closely with chip manufacturer Qualcomm to put the best hardware possible into the OnePlus 12 - more specifically, OnePlus is referring to the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagship SoC, which was announced just a few months ago. Of course, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone - OnePlus has always equipped its flagship handsets with whatever flagship Snapdragon chip is available, and it was only logical to see the 8 Gen 3 on the OnePlus 12. With that in mind, OnePlus did go into detail regarding the specifics of its partnership with Qualcomm. Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus comments: "We are thrilled to continue utilizing the latest Qualcomm Technologies chipset on our new flagship OnePlus 12... We are equally honored to expand our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies to explore the full potential of this chipset and achieve greater synergies that unlock a second-to-none mobile experience for our users." Better Endurance Of course, this collaboration goes beyond mere performance upgrades - with the 8 Gen 3 chip, the OnePlus 12 will provide users with access to optimizations in the form of CPU-Vitalization, the updated Qualcomm(R) Game Quick Touch 2.0, as well as enhanced AI performance. OnePlus adds that the upcoming phone will be the first 8 Gen 3-powered handset capable of working with the Snapdragon Spaces platform, allowing it to work with XR technologies and AR-capable hardware. With CPU-Vitalization for example, OnePlus uses what it describes as "system-level arithmetic scheduling technology" which in theory allows a device to fully utilize the performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 without compromising battery endurance. With all that being said, the global variant of the OnePlus 12 has yet to reach markets worldwide, and its actual real-world performance has yet to be determined. Police nab 9 suspected criminals in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has arrested nine suspected criminals terrorising parts of the state. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the arrest came barely two weeks after gunmen attacked and killed four policemen in a restaurant at the Ngor Okpala area of the state. In a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, the command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, said the command also recovered arms and ammunition from the suspects’ hideouts. Okoye said the arrests followed the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Barde’s directive to commence a detailed investigation and manhunt to unravel the perpetrators of the Ngor Okpala dastardly act. “Acting on the CP’s directives, a detachment of the Command’s tactical team on April 24 at about 1730hrs after a diligent gathering of credible intelligence, arrested one Mathew Chuwkuma, 48 years, of Mpam Ahaizu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, in his hideout at Umuahia, Abia. “He confessed to be the Sector Commander of the proscribed and dreadful IPOB/Eastern Security Network (ESN) syndicate in Mbaise and assisted the curious operatives in arresting three of his syndicate,” Okoye said. He listed the names of the suspects as Ojoko Ikechukwu, 53; Chilaka Charles, 44; and Anthony Iwu, 50, who were all arrested in their criminal hideout at Umuokiria, Ahaizu Mbaise Local Government Area of the state, while others escaped.
