Below the read more is a (hopefully) comprehensive definition of kemono as well as my rational for choosing Naja as my favorite/best example of this archetype.
Kemono (Adj. N.)
Kemono is simply the term for beast in Japanese and is used in anime to describe a character who is not human yet has human-like characteristics.  Kemono characters are often anthropomorphically designed and capable of the same sort of intelligence as human beings.  In all aspects, they are incredibly human aside from animalistic physical attributes like ears, tails, snouts, and fur.
A subset of the kemono type is the jujin or the kemonobito which are kemono who look more human than animal.  Characters like nekomimi fit in this category.  These characters typically with have only ears and a tail to distinguish them as beast-like as the rest of their features are human.
Furry is the popular term for discussing kemono characters; however, the term furry can be misleading when talking about kemono characters.  Ultimately, the rule for establishing a character's status as a furry is that they will look completely like the animal they are supposed to be and, like their namesake, will be covered in fur.
It should be mentioned that youkai and kemono are two completely different things.  Youkai and their appearances, even if they are animal-like, often stem from Japanese lore and tradition while kemono are kemono due to the structure and premise of the series they appear in.  A character who is a youkai is not a kemono.
Naja is half-silver-wolf and half-human, so by all accounts he doesn't particularly fit into the kemono world nor does he fit into the human world because of his fluffy white tail, so he's be more of a jujin than a true kemono; however, I'm choosing him because I adore his character, and I appreciate the struggle between the two races that he is.
Sands of Destruction sets up kemono like characters, called Feral, as one master race with numerous animal ethnicity and with the human race as subservient to the Feral.  Despite how on the outside of both worlds Naja is, he maintains his composure and does his work.  He's a smart individual who actually does have a lot of common sense despite the fact that the team of Naja and Rhia are bested by Kyrie and Morte about as badly as Team Rocket is in Pokemon.
In the end, he's not exactly a full kemono, but I think that he, as a character, illustrates some of the issues brought about in anime by this character type being present.  Besides...fluffy white tail.
