Indy Star: Myles Turner Has Something to Prove This Sunday Against JoJo

Big game on Sunday: Sixers vs. Pacers, and a chance for Indiana big man Myles Turner to show he’s in the same class, if not the same level, as Joel Embiid. JoJo has been his kryptonite, notes J. Michael of The Indy Star:

Without fail, Myles Turner fails against Joel Embiid. Sunday, he's never been in better position to change perceptions on a national scale when the Indiana Pacers host the Philadelphia 76ers. 

The Pacers (11-8) are coming off a 108-105 loss at the Charlotte Hornets on Friday. Turner had 20 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. He's been a different player under first-year coach Nate Bjorkgren on both ends.

"If I am who I think I am, I'm going to step up to the challenge," Turner said.

Since returning from missing two games with a broken bone in his right (shooting) hand, Turner is averaging 19.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.8 blocks in his past five games.

Embiid, however, is playing at an MVP level for the Sixers (14-6) at 28.3 points, 11.1 rebounds for the season.

A bellwether of how Turner might fare should be evident early. Embiid, who outweighs him by 30 pounds, gets him in foul trouble to make the matchup moot.

In their first meeting last season, Turner had 2 fouls -- both drawn by Embiid in the act of shooting -- before the midway point of the first quarter. He lasted until the fourth quarter in a close game until Turner was hit with consecutive fouls in 4 seconds. He'd entered for Domantas Sabonis just 23 seconds prior.

Turner had more fouls (5) than points (3) or rebounds (3) in 29 minutes.

Embiid missed the next two meetings with injuries, but when the teams played in the Orlando bubble it was a mismatch again. Embiid had 41 points and 21 rebounds while Turner fouled out in 20 minutes with 9 points and 2 rebounds.

Michael notes that Turner’s desire to be taken seriously as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate means shutting down guys like Embiid and Rudy Gobert — not stiffs like the Aron Bayneses of the world. The fact that he recently lost 4th quarter minutes to Goga Bitazde (6′11!) is a bit of a kick in the pants.

Joel is coming off a 37 | 11 against MInnesota, a team playing without KAT or Naz Reid, resulting in the abuse of Ed Davis (-21). Given Embiid’s legit MVP candidacy, and the fact that Phiilly has lost just once this season with JoJo in the lineup, slowing down the former Jayhawk giant would go a long way towards earning the Samuri a little respect.
