This made me laugh in the friendliest way!

I started watching SGA when season 4 was airing, and I used to walk my ass down to the video rental store and pray that the DVDs I needed would be there! I'd check out two discs at a time, so 8 episodes!

They only had one set, and I'd frequently go down only to find the next discs I needed weren't in. This is how I ended up signing up to Netflix... to get them mailed to me! I don't even think streaming online was thing they did back then.

When it comes to the characters in SGA, I reckon they would have been well familiar with piracy, especially Rodney and the rest of the scientists. I don't think streaming services would have been in their brain at all!

PS The Ancient Tv fic could also be Healing Station Argh by Toft!

....Hey, Stargate was decades ago, which is another country, and a few days ago I was reading that fic in which John finds Ancient TV, do you know which? It was cool. Anyway, in the far past that you'd know more than me about... how did people watch serials, other than when they were running? There were CD's being sold, or something, right? Would SGA cast have any reference for, say, finding Ancient Disney+? Also, was piracy over Internet... different from how it is now? What experiencies would SGA guys have with this stuff?

Are you talking about Blu-rays? I'm not from the US myself, and when I was a kid we just waited for the DVDs to come out or cable TV, which still aired late episodes

Piracy is, in some ways, better and worse now than it used to be. Anti-piracy laws are looser where I'm from, and streaming services weren't as accessible (or as convoluted lol) but from what i understand there will always be tools if you just looked for it. I have my own approach to it (IF i ever pirated anything, but seeing as I'm a good member of the civilized world, I cannot POSSIBLY conceive of such an idea) but you can always look things up

SGA guys' experience on...piracy? serial TV? Are we talking about the cast, or the characters?

I've said this before and I'll say it again but I'm menstruating and emotional today and actually have the words because @spurious and I have been talking about it--the reason why mcshep is the pairing of all time for me, personally, is this:

Rodney fundamentally believes the best he will ever get is to be tolerated. That if he suppresses his personality for long enough and does the right combination of Tasks, some woman will decide hes not so bad and settle for him. It doesn't matter if he wants her back, being tolerated is enough, and all he deserves.

His sister clearly reinforces this when she asks him about proposing to Katie Brown, which makes me think this was something his parents said as well.

JEANNIE: You think you're gonna find someone better?

McKAY: No, it's not that.

JEANNIE (laughing): ‘Cause you're not!

McKAY: Hang on …

JEANNIE: The fact that you found a nice girl who's willing to put up with all your many little flaws is a miracle.

He thinks it's a miracle, to be tolerated. "You're no John Sheppard," Jeannie reminds him. You can't have anyone in the world like your best friend (who he's painted, to her, as someone who can have anyone in the world). It has NEVER occurred to him that he could be wanted, or desired, for who he is. Only tolerated.

Rodney proposes to Katie Brown shortly after this likely because his sister reminded him the best he could hope for is a nice girl who tolerates him, and he was like I need to lock this down.

THEN, MEANWHILE. John Sheppard, who wants Rodney so badly. Not suppressed or polished or Best Behavior Rodney, either, but Real, Messy, Selfish, Arrogant, Prickly, Unmasked Rodney. John is, without a doubt, the person Rodney is most unabashedly himself in front of, the person who has repeatedly seen him at his worst, the person with which he totally allows his guard to drop, the person he spends his leisure time with. John has seen him, in whole, and wants him. Desires him powerfully and self destructively and all-consumingly with no hope for reciprocity for literal years.

For someone who believes he is fundamentally unlovable and only tolerable and has never even considered desire as a component in his lonely future--to have the person who knows him best (and a person he grudgingly but profoundly admires and loves and thinks is, for some reason, the Platonic Ideal of manhood and also coincidentally so handsome he could have anyone in the world he wanted) WANT him like that...it just!!! they're so romantic to me

99% of the time I'm glad and relieved Stargate isn't as popular a franchise as Star Wars and Star Trek. Like it remains semi-untouched by stupidity that way, and there hasn't really been a contemporary fandom revival necessitating the retroactive imposition of New Fandom discourse onto an Old Fandom (ie, @spurious and I were just discussing how insufferable it would be to see kids calling SGA 'queer baiting,' or trying to rip a character like John Sheppard from his DADT early 2000s context). I truly believe the show benefits from not being picked apart by contemporary standards of "wokeness," and I tend to really like the older skewing fan-base and high quality, retro-feeling characterization in fic.

But there are also days when it makes me really sad, simply because its my favorite ever and I just! Want more people to talk to about it. I've shared all my thoughts and theories ten hundred times with my poor wife. I violently and feverishly rehash the same conversations with my like, three fandom friends. I just love Stargate so much I want there to be more Stargate stuff in the world, or more Stargate fans to talk to! I get to do Trek and SW tattoos all the time, there's no shortage of art for my studio, they're both massive cultural mainstays and Stargate just....isn't! And I dunno!!! In moments this really bums me out.

often fandom will take a repressed man and unrepress him a little bit for fanfiction to make him say the things you want him to say. But the stargate atlantis fandom is not scared to let those men remain repressed so nothing is truly said to each other in 20,000 words and yet they still manage to fuck and have a half functional relationship. I love it. I love it. these are the type of characters people invented the truth potion trope for. These guys under the threat of death could barelt utter a heartfelt and truthful sentence to one another the only thing that could make them talk is if you completely removed their inhibitions and bodily autonomy
