I just thought of a horrible theory. Hermes is the one telling the story so he, obviously, knows what’s going to happen. When he tells Orpheus to not look back, it’s not just advice for when he’s going down but when he’s coming back up. Hermes is trying to save Orpheus from making the same mistake again.
