Skippy: Part 2 about private jet trip to Uvalde: same Gulf Stream pvt jet departed Garner Field/UVA (Uvalde's closest private airport) at 2:34pm. This means that Markle flew in at 10:10am, departed at 2:34pm, spending barely 4 hours there. Same tail number had recent flights between Sta Barbara and Van Nuys (Montecito obviously close to SBA Airport), and also between Teterboro (NYC) and Toronto. Markle uses Silver Air for private jets VERY frequently it looks like. Archewell funds being wasted.
Hi Skippy: regarding the private jet trip info available for free and publicly online (Thank you, Flight Aware!), I should've added that no other flights into Garner Field (UVA Airport) come up for Thursday that originated in California. Since those flights were from/returning to Van Nuys around the time Markle was in Uvalde, there's no doubt that was the private jet Meghan, Mandana Dayani, the armed bodyguard and Netflix crew used. Van Nuys is in between L.A. and Montecito. Tax write off!
I have no idea where part one went!  Thank you so much for gathering this info for us, it’s greatly appreciated….Could she not have flown privately?❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

in your opinion, was the future zach sent dean to in The End real or do you think zach fabricated it to scare dean into saying yes? if he did fabricate it, i think it’s interesting he would make cas how he was lol
I’m gonna send you to read the last thing I wrote on 5.04:
https://mittensmorgul.tumblr.com/post/185820014535/504-the-end-or-as-we-know-from-the-show-beating
I’ve been saying for years now that this is the one episode I don’t enjoy engaging with because it comes the closest to anything in the entire series to legitimately being a trigger for me. I’m really happy that so many people enjoy their personal headcanons for that universe, or find it a rich source of fic inspiration or character exploration or whatever, but I really REALLY need to maintain my own understanding of what this episode is for my own personal sanity, and I would really REALLY appreciate not being drawn into debates about it. Again, for my own personal (very real, very tenuous) sanity.
I really don’t need to end up in the psych ward over a dang tv show, you know? Thanks. :)
But short answer, yes. As was confirmed in s13 via the AU’s Zachariah, who implemented this exact same special power, this sort of “false vision” or “hallucinatory experience that feels real” is literally Zachariah’s special talent as an angel, just as “stripping memories from human minds” is Castiel’s special talent– once again, confirmed by the AU Castiel’s horrific implementation of that power.
So, yes… Just like he manufactured Dean and Sam’s “fake identities” in 4.17, just like he manipulated Dean’s Heaven in 5.16, just like he turned an abandoned muffler factory in Van Nuys into “The Beautiful Room” for 4.22 and 5.18, and just like AU Zachariah forced visions on Lucifer and Jack in an attempt to manipulate them in s13, Dean’s experience in 5.04 was likely entirely inside his own head.
Or in some sort of pocket dimension of the variety that Gabriel put them all through in 5.08.
But no, not real at all.
I mean, he was trying to show Dean just how horrible the future could be, and using Dean’s own “future self” to push his message that saying yes to Michael was literally the only way to prevent any of these terrible things from happening. And he wasn’t using HIS idea of “terrible” to sway Dean, he was using DEAN’S PERSONAL WORST CASE SCENARIOS.
Sam not dead, but entirely consumed by Lucifer. Sam’s body having been used to wreak this ultimate destruction on the world.
Cas not dead, not having abandoned him, but having stood by Dean (aka the ultimate loser), and having lost everything in the process– up to and including Dean’s own friendship. And Cas being MISERABLE as a result, losing himself in drugs and sex because “I used to belong to a much better club.” Meaning Cas never did truly care about humanity, never did think that humanity was worth saving, and contrary to what we see later in the season when Cas is effectively human for a hot minute and more fascinated by it than miserable about his loss of power, Zachariah’s version is a bitter and miserable nihilist instead.
And Dean himself– “torturing again. Classy.” He doesn’t care about anyone or anything except getting his revenge (at which he will ultimately fail, because even if he had gotten off that shot, the Colt can’t kill Lucifer anyway… which we will learn for sure in 5.10).
And then we have Chuck in that world. Not even a functioning prophet anymore, but the dude with the clipboard who basically serves as quartermaster of the camp. He keeps track of toilet paper, ffs. Does that sound like any incarnation of Chuck, aka GOD. Yeah, no… Zachariah was disdainful of Chuck not only in this episode, but even in 4.18, where Cas had told Chuck he admired his work:
ZACHARIAH: I’m Zachariah. You may know me from your work.CHUCK: What do you want?ZACHARIAH: Did you see it?CHUCK: (he nods) Is it true? Is all of that… really going to happen?ZACHARIAH: Have you been wrong so far?CHUCK: (getting up and heading for a door) I’ve got to warn Sam and Dean.ZACHARIAH: I wouldn’t advise it. People shouldn’t know too much about their own destiny. You try… and I’ll stop you. (CHUCK stops; then starts going off in another direction)  Where are you going?CHUCK: To go kill myself.ZACHARIAH: Don’t be melodramatic, Chuck. We’d only bring you back to life.
I mean, that’s not how any angel would ever talk to God, you know? Zach, for all his high and mighty self-righteousness, he really wasn’t all that clever, you know?
So no, I don’t think it was any true future seeing. It was a manipulation.
Dean experienced three days while Cas waited on that street corner for him for FOUR HOURS. When his time was up, Cas… zapped him there to his side. So, yeah… pretty sure the whole thing happened inside Dean’s head.
And I found this bit looking through my Zachariah tag… where I offered some commentary on someone else’s post…

Then Came A Touch Of Rain
Then Came A Touch Of Rain
It didn’t take much.
Tumblr media
Rain in SoCal in May is reasonably rare. The average is 0.31″ for the entire month.
Today’s official total at Van Nuys Airport was only 0.01″. The closest weather station to us reported 0.10″.
It wasn’t even enough to wash the layers of dirt off my car. It was only enough to make it splotchy and look worse than normal.
But the white and pink rose bush took it hard.
As it’s…

The LA Burger Delivery And Takeout Guide added to Google Docs
The LA Burger Delivery And Takeout Guide
Times are tough. And when the going gets tough, the tough get burgers. From vegan patties in Frogtown, to smashburgers in Venice, to some of the most iconic, old-school, meat-and-cheese situations in the city, here are 19 great places to order a burger in LA.
All restaurants featured on The Infatuation are selected by our editorial team. The LA Burger Delivery And Takeout Guide is presented by Uber Eats. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, supporting our local restaurant community has never been more important. Uber Eats is offering $0 Delivery Fee for delivery orders from independent restaurants directly in the app. Order now to support. See app for details.
The spots  Holly Liss The Apple Pan $ $ $ $ American ,  Burgers  in  Cheviot Hills ,  West LA ,  Westwood $$$$ 10801 W Pico Blvd 7.8 /10
On paper, nothing about the Apple Pan’s Steakburger is going to blow you away: A thin patty, lettuce, tomatoes, relish, and some mayonnaise. But that’s why you don’t eat on paper. It’s an ideally ratioed, affordable classic that’s more than 70 years old, and it inspired a whole lot of the other burgers on this list. Once you try it, you’ll immediately be a convert. Their Hickoryburger, made with tangy house BBQ sauce, has also more than earned legendary status.
Baby Blues BBQ $ $ $ $ BBQ  in  Venice $$$$ 444 Lincoln Blvd 7.3 /10
There are Baby Blues locations in Echo Park and Venice, which means that no matter which side of town you’re on, you could probably pick up your phone right now and order their Bacon-Blue Burger. And you should - it’s a truly innovative patty that’s made by blending ground chuck, bacon, and blue cheese into one funky, salty, fatty burger. It’s as good as it sounds.
Order delivery   Phillip Guerrette Belcampo Meat Co. $$$$ 8053 W 3rd St
With locations in Santa Monica, Beverly Grove, and DTLA, chances are you’re not very far from a Belcampo Meat Co. outpost. Which is very good news, because from their In-N-Out-style Double Fast, which comes with two crispy, salty patties, to the Lamb Burger, a half-pound lamb patty with a superb black garlic aioli, you really can’t go wrong here.
Bill's Burgers $$$$ 14742 Oxnard St
One of LA’s OG burger spots, Bill’s Hamburgers has been open in Van Nuys since 1965 - and Bill has been behind the counter flipping burgers that entire time. They’re as simple as you can get: American cheese, tomato, onion, and mayo, but the meat has a great, crispy char, and at $5 for a double, there aren’t many better deals in town. Cash only.
 Jakob Layman Broad Street Oyster Co. $ $ $ $ American ,  Seafood  in  Malibu $$$$ 23359 Pacific Coast Hwy 8.6 /10
Malibu’s seafood shack/pirate hangout Broad Street Oyster doesn’t just serve things that come out of the ocean: They also have a not-so-secret burger. And they’ve just opened a delivery kitchen in the Arts District, so whether you’re by the water, or closer to Downtown, you can get their $12 double burger (which includes great thick-cut fries). It’s simple, but truly excellent: Two smashed patties with American cheese on a potato roll, served with just a dab of ketchup and some shio kombu (seaweed boiled in soy sauce) that gives it a salty kick. If you go to the Malibu location for pick-up, they’ve converted the dining room into an actual drive-thru, so you don’t have to get out of your car.
Brett Keating Burgers 99 $ $ $ $ Burgers  in  Hancock Park ,  Hollywood $$$$ 131 South La Brea Ave Not
Rated
Yet
The newest spot on this guide, Burgers 99 will fulfill all your fast food-related desires if you’re in Hollywood or Weho. This La Brea burger joint serves the American, the closest thing we’ve had to a Quarter Pounder that’s not actually a Quarter Pounder (and don’t worry, it’s much better than the McDonald’s version). It’s got a charred, crispy beef patty on a Martin potato roll that’s slathered with ketchup, and served with diced onions on top. And, in extremely not-fast-food style, the their Vegan Burger is also really good - they make it with chickpeas, potato, and black lentil, and it’s approximately a million times better than the Impossible burger they serve at Burger King.
 Holly Liss Cassell's Hamburgers $ $ $ $ American ,  Burgers  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3600 W 6th St 8.0 /10
They’ve got “Hamburgers” in their name, but our favorite thing at Cassell’s has always been their patty melt. The griddled onions, beef, and melty cheddar (or Swiss) provide exactly the amount of grease that you want, but you’ll still be able to finish it (provided you have enough napkins on hand). Save a tiny corner of your stomach for the Key lime pie afterward, if you can. If you need something a bit lighter, though, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with their regular bacon burger.
 Order delivery   Father's Office $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Burgers  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1018 Montana Ave. 9.0 /10
If you’ve been in LA for longer than seven minutes, there’s a good chance you’ve heard about The Office Burger. But if all you know is that they won’t allow substitutions (and definitely don’t add ketchup), you’re missing out on a seriously great burger. Because underneath all the rules and hype is a superb dry-aged patty, perfectly balanced by crisp arugula, bacon-onion schmaltz, gruyere, and blue cheese. It goes perfectly with a Russian River beer, which they’re also offering for delivery. All three locations (Santa Monica, Culver City, and Arts District) are open.
The Golden State $$$$ 426 N Fairfax Ave
Fairfax’s Golden State serves burgers you need to know about if you live in Weho or Beverly Grove. The Burger - made with high-quality beef, cheddar, and bacon - is good, but we usually go for the Lamb Burger. It’s piled with melty gruyere, roasted red peppers, dill yogurt, and curry aioli, which all go great with the lamb-y funk of the meat. Get the sweet potato wedges on the side.
 Krystal Thompson Great White $ $ $ $ American  in  Venice $$$$ 1604 Pacific Ave 7.7 /10
Gran Blanco, Venice’s beachside burger-and-cocktail hangout, might be closed during the quarantine, but their excellent burger lives on at Great White, their sister restaurant across Pacific Ave. That burger is massive, with two smashed patties, a great vinegar-y slaw, American cheese, and some crispy fries on the side, and an absolute mess, but that’s just how we like it.
 HiHo Cheeseburger $ $ $ $ Burgers  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1320 2nd St B 8.3 /10
Among the best burger places in LA, HiHo has (basically identical) Mid-Wilshire and Santa Monica locations. At each, you’ll find burgers made from out-of-this-world, 100% grass-fed wagyu beef that actually taste different than regular beef burgers. Somehow, they’re only $8 for a double, though we do recommend splurging and adding the spicy onion jam for $1.50 - it gives a really great kick.
Honeybee Burger $ $ $ $ Burgers ,  Vegetarian  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 1820 N Vermont Ave 7.7 /10
A plant-based spot in Los Feliz, Honeybee serves great burgers that you’ll barely recognize as vegan. Get the Queen Bee - it’s essentially a meat-free Double-Double, with house Thousand Island dressing, griddled onion jam, tomato, and lettuce, with melty (yes, vegan) American cheese on top. Do not, under any circumstances, skip the Choco Bee tahini milkshake, either.
 Order delivery   Jakob Layman Jitlada $ $ $ $ Thai  in  East Hollywood ,  Thai Town $$$$ 5233 Sunset Blvd. 9.4 /10
The legend of Jitlada is long in LA - it’s one of the best Thai restaurants in town, and so, also one of the best in the United States. But outside of all the excellent traditional Thai dishes, there’s an extremely untraditional one: The Jazz Burger. Named after the chef (she used to make it for her kids’ school lunches), the Jazz Burger involves heaps of ginger, garlic, and peppers, and is as spicy as anything else on the heat-heavy menu.
 Dylan Ho Plan Check $ $ $ $ American  in  Downtown LA $$$$ 1111 Wilshire Blvd 7.6 /10
At first glance, Plan Check’s burger looks like most other burgers, but after one bite, you’ll notice the Americanized dashi cheese (which means it’s melty and umami-heavy), the ketchup leather, grilled onions, and house-made pickles. Then, you’ll wonder why no one else is doing burgers like this. Then you’ll just be happy to be eating a burger from the future.
Order delivery   Holly Liss Playa Provisions $ $ $ $ American  in  Playa Del Rey $$$$ 119 Culver Blvd 7.3 /10
A great locals’ spot in Playa del Rey, Playa Provisions doesn’t usually serve a burger. But their closed sister restaurant The Tripel does, so they’re serving the Tripel Burger - one of the best in LA - out of their own kitchen. This excellent beef burger is served on a light, buttered pretzel bun, and piled high with caramelized onions, cabbage slaw with poppy seeds, and a thin slice of aged cheddar. And although it sounds fancy, it’s only $13, which is super-reasonable for a burger this good.
Order delivery  The Rooster $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 8809 W Pico Blvd Not
Rated
Yet
Chances are, if you’ve been to The Rooster on Pico - or ever encountered their truck around town - you’ve had their Rico Suave breakfast burrito. It’s great, after all. But the next time you get delivery, order the Rooster Burger. It’s a breakfast burger served on a ciabatta roll, with a thin layer of ketchup, melty cheddar, and a runny egg on top. Is it sloppy? Yes. But you’re eating it in the comfort of your own home - no one is judging you except for the dog.
 Jakob Layman Spoke Bicycle Cafe $ $ $ $ American  in  Atwater Village ,  Frogtown ,  Silver Lake $$$$ 3050 N Coolidge Ave 8.1 /10
Serving one of the best non-beef burgers in town, Spoke Bicycle Cafe in Frogtown is the first spot we go when we want a lighter take on a burger. Their house-made vegetable patty is made with beet and smoked mushroom, with pickled onions and garlic aioli that round it out really nicely. For the record, though, their beef burger is also great - it’s made with dry-aged ribeye, aged cheddar, and smoked bacon.
 Stout $ $ $ $ Burgers  in  Hollywood $$$$ 1544 N. Cahuenga Blvd. 7.5 /10
Stout, the excellent burger spot in Hollywood, is open for delivery (almost) day - you can order until 2am. Kobe Bryant Dies in Helicopter Crash in California
(Bloomberg) — Kobe Bryant, the basketball icon who won five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, died in a helicopter crash Sunday, leaving a legacy that spanned 20 years in professional sports and a growing second career as an investor.
Bryant was among nine people killed when a helicopter slammed into a hillside in Calabasas, California, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. He was 41. Also among the victims were his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, another parent and a teammate from Gianna’s travel sports team.
“The NBA family is devastated,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. And in a sign that Bryant’s impact went deep into the city where he made his career, Los Angeles Mayor Mayor Eric Garcetti said he “will live forever in the heart of Los Angeles, and will be remembered through the ages as one of our greatest heroes.”
A 6-foot-6 small forward, Bryant was a gifted scorer whose intensity and work ethic became lore throughout the sports world. He entered the NBA in 1996 directly out of high school, and as the youngest player in the league had an almost-immediate impact for the Lakers. At the time the team was looking for the next star to continue a run of legends that included Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson.
Bryant delivered. During his 20-year pro career he won — in addition to his NBA titles — two gold medals in the Olympics, two NBA Finals MVPs and a regular season MVP in 2008. He led the league in scoring twice and retired with 33,643 points — third on the league’s all-time scoring list until he was passed this weekend by LeBron James. He wore two jerseys for the Lakers — No. 8 and No. 24 — and the team retired both.
Complex Legacy
His career was not without controversy. In 2003, he was accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado. Bryant said the encounter was consensual, and criminal charges were dropped when his accuser refused to testify. She later filed a civil suit against him, and the two sides settled out of court, with Bryant issuing an apology but admitting no guilt.
The rape case created a complex legacy for Bryant, who repaired his reputation both on the court, and off it, becoming a celebrated investor and businessman. He co-founded a venture capital firm in 2013 and in 2018 won an Academy Award for best animated short for 2017’s “Dear Basketball,” based on a poem he wrote announcing his retirement.
Bryant’s immense popularity, including overseas in China, made him a valuable endorser even after he finished playing. No partnership was as big as his long-time relationship with Nike Inc. Bryant signed with the company in 2003 and became one of the sneaker-maker’s most important athlete endorsers. Nike built an entire apparel line around Bryant, and released more than 10 signature Kobe shoes.
“He was one of the greatest athletes of his generation and has had an immeasurable impact on the world of sport and the community of basketball,” the company said in a statement.
Bryant’s name was the first to be mentioned on-stage at the Grammy Awards on Sunday evening, when singer Lizzo dedicated the night to him before opening the show with a two-song performance. His two retired basketball jerseys were illuminated in Staples Center, home of the Lakers.
“We’re all feeling crazy sadness right now,” host Alicia Keys said, before singing a song in Bryant’s honor. “We’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built.”
Bryant’s Childhood
Kobe Bean Bryant was born in Philadelphia on Aug. 23, 1978. Son of a professional basketball player, Bryant moved to Italy when he was 6 after his father took a job with a team in Rieti. Fluent in Italian, Bryant returned to the U.S. in 1991, and starred as a high schooler for Philadelphia’s Lower Merion High School.
He was drafted 13th overall in 1996 by the Charlotte Hornets, who traded him to the Lakers — the only team he would ever play for. Even early in his career, his work ethic set him apart from others. Longtime NBA coach Byron Scott recalls finding Bryant, when he was 18, shooting alone in an empty gym two hours before practice.
“I go out to the court and I look, and there’s Kobe Bryant, he’s out there shooting in the dark,” Scott told Business Insider in 2017. “I stood there for probably about 10 seconds and I said, ‘This kid is going to be great.’”
Paired with Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal, Bryant won his first NBA title in 2000, the first of three straight that the team would win. After O’Neal departed, Bryant went on to win two more, in 2009 and 2010. He was named the finals MVP for both.
NBA Highlights
Outside of the championships, Bryant’s career contains a number of legendary NBA moments. In 2005, he outscored the Dallas Mavericks 62-61 through three quarters of a regular season game. A month later he scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors, the closest any player before or since had come to touching Chamberlain’s record 100.
In 2013, he tore his Achilles tendon against the Golden State Warriors, and hit two free throws before leaving the game. It’s just one of many examples of how Bryant fought through injuries in his career. Former Lakers teammate John Celestand remembers another, when Bryant broke his wrist during the 1999-2000 season.
“I am ashamed to say that I was excited the day after his injury because I knew that there was no way that No. 8 would be the first to practice, if he would even be there at all,” Celestand wrote in 2005 blog post. “As I walked through the training room, I became stricken with fear when I heard a ball bouncing. No, no, it couldn’t be! Yes it could. Kobe was already in a full sweat with a cast on his right arm, and dribbling and shooting with his left.”
Business Career
Bryant began investing long before he retired from the NBA. Those who worked with him said he showed the same intensity and work ethic in pitch meetings that he used to show on the court. He’d frequently cold-call CEOs and business leaders — including former Nike Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker, former Apple Inc. executive Jony Ive, and media moguls Oprah Winfrey and Arianna Huffington — to learn more about their business.
Bryant’s legacy cut across multiple fields — sports, entertainment, business — and social media erupted with messages and lamentations. Nike posted a poignant image in saying goodbye to Bryant, whose nickname was Black Mamba.
Among his most successful investments was an early stake in the sports drink-maker BodyArmor. He reportedly put $6 million into the company in 2014, a stake that was worth an estimated $200 million after Coca-Cola took a majority stake in BodyArmor four years later.
“It’s the same mentality” as playing basketball, Bryant told Bloomberg Businessweek of his investing back in 2018. “You win one championship, you can go on vacation all summer long or be in the gym the next day working on winning the next one. That same mentality carries through to what we are doing today, to me being here now.”
In 2013 he co-founded Bryant Stibel, a venture capital firm, with Jeff Stibel. The firm has invested in more than two dozen companies, including video game publisher Epic Games, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.com, Cholula hot sauce, and athlete-centered media platform the Players Tribune.
He dabbled in media as well, launching a production company called Kobe Studios.
Bryant leaves behind a wife, Vanessa, and three surviving daughters — Natalia, Bianka and Capri, who was born last year.
The Crash
The National Transportation Safety Board said it dispatched investigators to the crash site.
The superstar, his daughter and other passengers were traveling in a Sikorsky S-76B, a popular helicopter for commercial uses that has been used for decades. The helicopter identified by flight-tracking website Flightradar24 is owned by Island Express Holding Corp. in Van Nuys, California, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.
Flightradar24 said preliminary data indicated the helicopter had taken off from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, just south of Los Angeles, at 9:06 a.m. local time. It flew over Los Angeles and Glendale, then over the San Fernando Valley before turning toward the rugged Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu.
In its last recorded position at 9:45 a.m., the helicopter was at 1,700 feet altitude and flying at 176 miles per hour. Photos of the crash site show that it hit an undeveloped hillside.
The final tweet on Bryant’s personal account referred to James’s achievement on the court this weekend passing him as No. 3 on the all-time NBA scoring list.
In 2010, Bryant spoke with Yahoo! Sports about his legacy.
“When my career is over, I want them to think of me as an overachiever despite the talent that I have,” Bryant said. “To think of me as a person that’s overachieved, that would mean a lot to me. That means I put a lot of work in and squeezed every ounce of juice out of this orange that I could.”

Monday Morning Swing Coach: How Adam Hadwin was able to find the cup from deep
Every Monday, we tap GOLF’s Top 100 Teachers in America for their insights on what went down between the ropes over the weekend on the major tours, and more importantly, how you can use this information to improve your own game. Call it trickle-down tips—learn from the best to play your best.
1. Canadian native Adam Hadwin drained a pair of lengthy putts on Saturday to forge a four-stroke 54-hole lead, and one from downtown Edmonton on No. 13 on Sunday to quiet runner-up Patrick Cantlay’s back-nine charge. Hadwin’s an elite putter (2nd in one-putt percentage this season), but three bombs to bag your first PGA Tour victory? Huge. What’s the secret to success from long range?
John Dunigan, White Manor C.C. Malvern, Pa. (@JohnDuniganGolf): I’ll stick my neck out: It’s foolish to think you’ll make anything over 40 feet. So don’t. The trick is to avoid three-putting, which is a very real possibility on lags (and far more possible than canning one). I see a lot of weekend players get lazy on long putts. Read the putt, choose your line and get into your setup in the same fashion you would for a 10-footer. Pay lags respect—and they’ll pay you back.
Brady Riggs, Woodley Lakes G.C., Van Nuys, Calif. (@BradyRiggs): It may sound obvious, but practice matters. Oh, you do practice? Well, considering that most practice putting greens feature holes spaced between 15 to 20 feet apart, you’re working on putts you’ll sink less than 15 percent of the time and almost never three-putt. Where’s the help in that? If you want to improve your skill from long range, putt a lot of long-range putts. There’s no law that says you have to roll your rock to the next closest pin on the practice green. Go edge to edge. Over time, you’ll groove a reliable long-range stroke.
Martin Chuck, Raven G.C., Phoenix, Ariz. (@tourstriker): Adam has spent a lot of time at The Raven Golf Club in Phoenix, where I run my academy. His coach, British Columbia-based Brett Saunders, often pops down, and not a single session ends without some work on the practice green. As Brady mentioned, practice pays. Focus on five things: 1) pace, 2) pace, 3) pace, 4) pace and 5) putterface. Kidding aside, select a stroke length you believe will create enough force to roll the ball to the hole, and then do whatever it takes to strike the putt in the center of the putterface. Most weekend players make contact out near the heel or toe, causing the putt to come up short, even if the stroke length they selected was perfect. You can’t perform—or learn—without sweet-spot contact.
2. Keeping the putting going, Bryson DeChambeau, who tied for 27th in Tampa, is onto at least his third different putting stroke this season.Bryson’s a future stud, but his putting rank has sagged all the way to 211th. We’ve all been there. What’s the quickest way to turn around a balky stroke?
Tony Ruggiero, C.C. of Mobile, Mobile, Ala. (@dewsweepergolf): Changing your entire stroke or going off on a tangent the way Bryson has is no way to fix a struggling putting game. When your putting goes south, take a look at your setup. Two of my more famous students, Smylie Kaufman and Lucas Glover, do this all the time. Using a mirror, make sure your aim, ball position and posture are correct, but do it in a way where you still feel comfortable over the ball. Attempting to be too perfect and too mechanical often robs you of feel. Without feel, you’ll be lucky to sink putts from three feet, let alone thirty.
Martin Chuck: Golf is a game of experimentation. Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan changed putters as often as they did underwear, so the story goes. Changing styles? That’s a slippery slope. Bryson’s intelligent, bursting with talent and widely known as a tinkerer, but he needs to stick with a stroke and go look for the answer in the pro shop. The same goes for you. Putting is mostly art—your stroke must be your own. The trick is finding the flatstick to match. Oh, and when you do find it, leave the price tag on it so it thinks you might take it back. Your putter works for you, not vice-versa.
John Dunigan: Bryson may be guilty of believing there’s a Holy Grail of putting strokes out there that will solve all of his problems. It doesn’t exist, nor does it have to. If every golfer—Bryson included—simply worked on starting the ball consistently on line, there wouldn’t be much need for putting instructors. Look at Jimmy Walker; he won a PGA Championship with a stroke you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. But it knew how to get the ball rolling in the right direction. Here’s a drill to get your started.
3. Patrick Cantlay had momentum on his side as he and Hadwin entered the Snake Pit at Innisbrook Sunday, but it was Cantlay who ultimately felt the bite. His failure to get up and down from a greenside bunker on the final hole was just one of six botched sand save attempts during the week. What went wrong?
Martin Chuck: I bet that Cantlay’s 1-for-6 sand-save percentage was the worst for any player who made the cut. Too bad—his ball-striking was off the charts. Keep in mind that despite the hype surrounding him coming out of UCLA, this was Patrick’s third PGA Tour event since the end of the 2014 season. Like all shots, bunker swings require reps, in practice and in competition. He’ll be fine. As for you, focus on the moves that will make a difference: wide stance, weight fixed on your lead foot, ball forward within a fractionally open stance, face square, and shaft leaning back toward your belt buckle at address (which provides additional loft without having to open the face). Train these keys and trust them.
Brady Riggs: I’m not familiar with Patrick’s bunker-swing technique, but I do know what’s to blame for most weekend players’ struggles from sand: a flat left wrist. If your left wrist is flat at impact as you’re trying to dislodge the ball from a bunker, the shot will go nowhere. Instead, allow your lead wrist to bend backwards (or cup) during your backswing, and remain bent through impact and all the way to the finish. Now, you’ve got bounce on your side—the club will hit the sand and slide through it like a hot knife through butter.
Tony Ruggiero: Cantlay came up short on 18—not enough oomph in that sand swing. It takes a big turn to provide enough energy to blast the ball out of the sand and all the way to the hole. So don’t just use your arms. As you do on full swings from the fairway, rotate all the way through the shot so that the majority of your weight ends up over your front foot. Now’s not the time to be shy.
