The ticketmaster announcement they released to try to cover their asses makes me even more mad. I don’t have any kind of business experience, but it would seem that instead of basing your verified fan offers on assumptions, you should base it on the highest possible outcome.
First, you determine how many seats per stadium there will be available. Then, you take a certain percentage, say 15%, and divide that number by the highest amount of tickets you offer per customer (in this case 6). I’m going to use Ford Field as an example because that is my stadium and I know the capacity (65,000).
15% of 65000 is 9750. This is the amount of tickets available for presale. Divided by 6 is 1625. This is the amount of people selected to participate in the presale event for this particular stadium. Everyone else who registered for the presale for this stadium is waitlisted.
Give a select amount of time for the people invited to presale to buy their tickets (say 2-3 days) and then see how many tickets are left. If Ticketmaster is correct and only 40% of invited people will purchase tickets, at an average of 3 tickets per person, then that means that 1950 tickets will be sold. Then, you do the process again. 7800 tickets at six tickets each will grant another 1300 people access. And this is only if Ticketmaster is correct about their data, which does not seem to apply here. The process continues until either the tickets run out, or you reach a certain date, in which the general sale opens up.
This way, you are not over inviting people to the presale and running out of tickets, causing mass outrage, in the case that you are wrong about the percentages and max amounts. You are limiting the amount of people on the servers at a time, so the wait times are lowered and, again, you avoid mass outrage. The only reason Ticketmaster didn’t do this system is because they do not care about their user base and only are in it for the money. They decided to ignore good business practices and smart processes because they thought they could get away with it and make more money, just like airlines do, and they should not be allowed to get away with it.
