His books and blog focus on self-development, travel, and lifestyle (microbusiness) entrepreneurship. The Book’s Main Idea“This book is for those who take action and those who provide the inspiration.”Chris GuillebeauThe $100 Startup is a business-centric book whose aim is to help prospective entrepreneurs become aware of the challenges that come with creating a successful small business that generates enough revenue to allow the entrepreneur to escape the 9-5 rat race and start living a ‘rich’ life.“The new reality is that working at a job may be the far riskier choice.”Chris GuillebeauA look at the main ideas shared in the bookThe book shares the following main ideas:1: Passion + good business sense is the magic formula“The missing piece is that you usually don’t get paid for your hobby itself; you get paid for helping other people pursue the hobby or for something indirectly related to it.”Chris GuillebeauThe secret to all success is simple really: capitalize on your passions but do so with good business sense by looking into how you can turn your skills (or passion) into a workable and successful product/or service.Aim to strike what Chris calls convergence, a state where your skills or passions are valuable in the sense that they intersect with the things/elements other people find useful. If you can strike this convergence and from it, package your passion/skills into a service or product a specific audience would find invaluably useful—in that it serves a purpose such as helping solve a problem—you will create a successful business because:“Passion or Skill + Usefulness = SuccessOr“(PASSION + SKILL) –> (PROBLEM + MARKETING) = OPPORTUNITY”Chris GuillebeauFor someone starting out in entrepreneurship—perhaps starting with $100 or less—to aim for this convergence, ask yourself, “Which skills or passions can I package into a valuable service,” or “what am I good at that I can offer to a ready audience?”“Ask three questions for every idea: a. How would I get paid with this idea? b. How much would I get paid from this idea? c. Is there a way I could get paid more than once?”Chris Guillebeau2: Where great business ideas come fromIf you have ever wondered where great ideas come from, Chris offers invaluable insight. He notes, “Great ideas are everywhere. They are seized opportunities from an emerging technology, or a solution to a hidden or glaring problem.”To find a great business idea, aim for convergence of your passion and what is useful to others, but also cultivate a deep understanding of your target audience not based on conventional targeting wisdom—targeting audiences based on age, gender, income, etc.—but based on what matters the most to the people you intend to serve:"What do people really, really want? At the end of the day, they want to be happy, and businesses that help their customers be happy are well-positioned to succeed."Chris Guillebeau3: Your success depends on the actions you takeSuccess—business or otherwise—is not that complicated really. All you truly need to do is take action; yes, spend time planning—because failing to plan is planning to fail—but more importantly, spend more time acting. This is the secret to small business success."There's nothing wrong with planning. But you can spend a lifetime making a plan that never turns into action. In the battle between planning and action, action wins."Chris GuillebeauWe are fortunate enough to live in an age where all the information we could ever need to succeed in our lives and businesses is readily available to us. At the click of a button, you can test business ideas, launch a microbusiness, and grow it into a thriving business. Without action, however, creating any sort of business success is impossible because:“Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work.”Chris GuillebeauBeing an entrepreneur or microbusiness owner calls for what Chris calls, “planning as you go” or “bias towards action.” This means finding that convergence and then getting started with implementing your idea right away by creating and launching a prototype of your product/service. With the product/service in play, you can “learn and plan as you go” and scale your business.ConclusionAll business success comes from action taken at the right time. As long as you can create something a specific audience will find valuable, you can create a low-startup cost business around it.

Subscribe and turn on the notification bell so you don't miss any future summaries. The Lean Start-up focuses on teaching readers how to better their start-up businesses by exposing them to a new way of thinking that is able to mitigate their risk going forward which automatically increases their likelihood of finding a product that sticks. The book does that through introducing the readers to a systematic and scientific method that enables them to get all the information they need to make fast and decisive decisions when starting a business.“The ability to learn faster from customers is the essential competitive advantage that start-ups must possess”’ Erick ReisA Look at the Main Topics Discussed In the BookHere is a taste of what to expect from the three phrases of the book.First phase: VISIONIn the book, Reis, through his experience, explains why start-ups fail. He tries to make readers understand that the battle for a successful start-up is first lost in the vision where entrepreneurs follow a conventional approach of starting a business; which dictates that immediately they get an idea and it has been approved by either their friends or family, the idea becomes legit and ready to be launched in the market.According to the Lean Start-up, the conventional approach is wrong because it makes entrepreneurs launch start-ups based on untested assumptions, which increase the possibility of them creating a perfect product that nobody wants.Reis says that the first goal of a start-up is to figure out the right thing to build, the thing that customers will want and will be willing to pay for as quickly as possible.Under the topic of vision, Reis teaches the readers how to kick start a start-up the right way. He uses a super formula, which makes the reader better at starting a successful business. Here is a glimpse of the formula.Step 1: The reader is taught how to come up with a user experience vision.Step 2: The reader is taught how to identify critical assumptions on their idea, which determines the success of the start-up.Step 3: The reader is educated on how to experiment with critical assumptions. Here, Reis uses the Zappos example where he explains how Nick Swinmurn, the inventor of Zappos, came up with a successful business by simply experimenting with his assumption, ‘people can buy shoes online’ by first posting photos of shoes online to test customer demand.Step 4: The reader is taught how to build an MVP (minimum viable product)- A sample of the reader’s product that highlights the main features of their idea but takes less time, effort and money to build, that they can use to test their idea with.Second phase: STEERThis phase the book focuses on teaching the reader how to steer his/her start-up business through using the Build-Measure-Learn feedback loop formula. In the book, Reis says the lean start-up methodology is based on a cycle of rinse and repeat; the build-measure-learn. What the reader is taught from the steer phase is how:He can identify the leap of faith assumption from his idea.He can use various methods to test his assumptions. He can release his product to the market. He can learn to define his baseline metric of judging the performance of his product to the market and how he can use it to measure his products success or failure. He can assess his products results and know whether to pivot (adjust to a better one) or persevere (retain the idea).Third phase: ACCELERATEIn the book, Reis uses the vision and steer phases to set a foundation for the reader’s last move to take to have a successful start-up, which is acceleration. In acceleration, Reis teaches the reader how he can move past the feedback loop faster and go on to set the innovation and growth ball rolling.Under accelerate Reis focuses on teaching the reader the following topics.BATCH- This part explains how the reader can use a small batch approach to get his product going as soon as possible. The author goes on to say that smaller batches work better for lean start-ups because they enable the entrepreneur to detect a problem early as well as enable him to get quick feedback from a customer.GROW- In this section, the author teaches readers how to identify and concentrate on the right growth strategy for their start-ups. To illustrate how important a right growth strategy is, Reis gives an example of how Sabeer Bhatia, the owner of Hotmail, grew the business by figuring out her best growth strategy, which was adding signature that carried the message, “Get your free e-mail at Hotmail” onto every outgoing email.ADAPT- This part teaches the reader how to develop an adaptive culture using the ‘five why’s system’.INNOVATE- This part teaches readers how to set up their start-up as an innovative company that has an organized way of producing new-innovations and start-ups.ConclusionThe big take away from the book, ‘The Lean Start-up’ is; entrepreneurship is management so for the reader to succeed in it, they need to manage their start-up business as the institution it is and avoid jumping head first into ideas.

McRavenIntroductionAll the successful people across the globe share one thing in common- they believe in starting your day by making your bed, as it is a difficult task to do at the start of the day, but one that charges you up and prepares you for the entire day ahead helping you stay productive throughout the day. This is the crux of the book ‘Make Your Bed’ by William H. Raven, which is indeed a fantastic read.If you’re interested in this book you can get 2 audiobooks for free with a trial of audible using the link in the description of this video. Subscribe and turn on the notification bell so you don’t miss any future summaries. The book is actually founded on the commencement speech given by Admiral William H. McRaven for the graduating class of University of Texas, Austin. In the speech, McRaven talks about the 10 key lessons he extracted from his Navy SEAL training which are straightforward and effective lessons that helped him deal with the obstacles and trials he experienced in his SEAL training. However, these 10 lessons can help one in every aspect of their life emerge victorious no matter who the person is or what the struggle he/she has. Here are some prominent takeaways from the book.Begin Your Day with a Completed TaskTo be productive and successful in your life, you need to kick start your day and you cannot do that better than by starting it off with a completed task. When you wake up, you need to do any one important task to give yourself a good boost of motivation so you stay energetic and positive throughout the day and keep achieving your targets. This is why experts advise you to make your bed when the day starts so you are done with one important task and move zealously towards the next task. You Cannot Do Everything AloneGetting the support of a helpful and skilled friend is not something bad, and does not in any way imply that you are weak or cannot do your task alone. You need to understand and accept the fact that getting help is a positive thing and it is okay to ask for it from your supportive friends when you are in need of it.As McRaven writes in the book,‘You cannot paddle the boat alone. Find someone to share your life with. Make as many friends as possible, and never forget that your success depends on others.’Life isn’t Fair so Move On!Life can never be fair and if you expect it to be so, you are only fooling yourself. We should not expect life to treat us justly because things will not always be, as we want them to be. The right attitude to adopt towards life is the positive and can-do one so whatever struggles life throws towards you, you should just buckle up and move on. If you keep moving on, you will soon overcome the obstacles and make the tide turn in your favor.Stand Up to BulliesIn your life, you will always encounter obstacles and troubles. Sometimes, it can be in the form of real bullies who taunt and jeer on you, and pull you down, and sometimes these bullies take the shape of tough challenges that weaken your spirit. No matter who or what your bully is, you must always stand up against them and fight for your rights. This may seem difficult at first, but if you dare be courageous, you can achieve your goals.Never Quit but Rise to the ChallengeIf only you believe in yourself and understand that you have all that it takes to be the winner, you will rise to the occasion and be victorious. You must adopt this very attitude towards all your obstacles in life and become committed to never quit in life. McRaven states in the book,‘In life, you will face a lot of Circuses. You will pay for your failures. But, if you persevere, if you let those failures teach you and strengthen you, then you will be prepared to handle life’s toughest moments.’ConclusionMake Your Bed is an amazing read that will change your perspective towards your goals, obstacles and life, which is why you must read it to build a better life for yourself.
