❝ Layla Dupreti had been a ghost since she was only a small child - her family’s own little shadow girl, her father used to joke, always walking around their little house with perfectly silent steps since she was able to take steps at all. It wasn’t something she had ever consciously tried to do, though she found her skill did improve when she focused; she had just been born that way, sure-footed as a cat and with feet just as padded and quiet.

And this was a skill that certainly came in handy, with Layla and her family living the way they did. Part of a human settlement on a backwater planet too small and inconsequential for the United Federation of Planets to care about, the Dupretis grew up, and raised their children, in fear of the violent gangs that ran rampant through the settlement’s various villages and cities, grabbing power wherever they could get it and showing no mercy for anyone who stood in their way. Often whichever gang was in control of her small village at the moment would hoard goods and supplies for themselves, forcing the villagers to pay large amounts of money simply for the things they needed to survive, but with Layla’s gift for silent sneaking, she was usually able to snatch enough supplies to keep her and her family afloat, all without anyone dangerous ever discovering her thieving.

So it was not retribution for her stealing that left Layla an orphan at the tender age of fourteen. No, the way in which the young girl lost her parents was much more pointless than that - during a siege of power over the village from a larger gang, with a fearsome reputation for cruelty, the little home that Layla had lived in all her life was burnt down, her parents both slaughtered while trying to run away from the fire. She had returned home from school that day to the burnt remains of the only home she’d ever known, forced to bury her parents by herself in shallow, unmarked graves, before going straight to the nearest starship port and stowing away on it, leaving the world full of violence behind her.

From there, Layla began to advertise herself as the perfect spy and thief, renting out her skills to whomever had the funds to pay for them - often working for rival organizations at the same time, spending the majority of her days crouched in the shadows with her face obscured and her trusty twin knifes, the payment for one of her first ever jobs, strapped to her sides. Though she concealed her true name and identity very carefully - referring to herself solely as the Shadow, an agonizing reminder to herself of her father’s nickname and the pain she had run from years ago - she quickly gained a reputation as the most talented thief in the galaxy, and eventually began to be approached by bigger and more powerful organizations. Those groups paid better than any “employers” Layla had had prior to them… but they were also more dangerous, the implications of what would happen if Layla refused the work they offered more severe.

This was how Layla eventually finds herself with perhaps the least desirable job of her career: stowing away on the USS Enterprise and making off with the cargo they were carrying, which happens to be medicine the ship is ferrying to a planet like the one Layla had used to call home, tiny and poor and in desperate need of it. Layla wants perhaps nothing less than to do what has been requested of her, but the crime syndicate who makes the job offer makes it very clear what will happen if the Shadow refuses. So she grits her teeth, takes half her payment in advance, and sneaks into the Enterprise’s cargo hold when they stop to pick up the object of her thievery.

And then she gets caught.

Found and pulled from the shadows on a job for the first time in her life, Layla fully expects to be kept prisoner on the starship and hauled before a judge. She doesn’t expect James Kirk, the Enterprise’s captain, to take pity on her, and to make her an offer: she will not be reported as a thief to the Starfleet authorities, as long as she agrees to stay aboard the Enterprise and serve as a yeoman. Having spent so much of her life hidden in dark corners, Layla doesn’t exactly adore the idea of spending every day around so many people, but faced with a choice between agreeing to this deal or going to prison for the rest of her life, she would - and does - choose the former without hesitation.

Now serving as a yeoman on the ship she had previously intended to burgle, Layla finds that she has never been in an environment such as this… and she can’t quite decide if that’s a good thing or not. With the exception of the ship’s doctor, a man whose cantankerous attitude she can appreciate, and half-Vulcan first officer, everyone on the ship is so cheerful and friendly, seeming to completely forgive Layla’s past attempted offence and seek to be friends with her - especially the Enterprise’s navigation officer, who continues to throw flirtatious comments at Layla no matter how often she puts one of her knives to his throat.

Layla isn’t quite sure what to make of the direction her life has taken. But she has gone from being a nameless lost soul of a thief who spends her time crouched in the darkness to having friends who genuinely want to know the person behind her inner walls, a found family full of sun-bright souls, and potentially, a boyfriend (if Sulu can ever man up enough to ask her out properly), so she supposes it’s more positive than negative.

It would, however, be a lot better if Kirk and Spock’s escapades wouldn’t threaten them all with death every other week. ❞

Layla named her twin knives Castor and Pollux because they were the first constellations she learned after leaving her home planet. Those constellations, to her, represented the start of her new life, and so too do her knives, her primary weapons.

Her first kiss was with a girl she went to school with, back on her home before her family’s deaths. They were fourteen years old playing and running around in the streets when the other girl tripped and fell on top of Layla, accidentally pinning her to the ground and being on top of her. Layla was about to try to get up when the girl suddenly asked if she could kiss her. Layla had never been kissed and wanted to see what it was like, so she said yes, and found she liked the kiss that followed - but before either of them could say anything afterwards, the other girl’s parents called her to come back inside, and a week later Layla’s family was killed and she ran away.

She was born at exactly midnight, which, according to a superstition on her home planet, means that a child’s life is going to be full of strife. Though she doesn’t believe in destiny or prophecy, Layla does have to admit that the people who believed that certainly weren’t wrong.

Whenever Layla had nightmares as a little girl, her mother would sing her to sleep with a lullaby she had made up herself when Layla was just a fussy newborn. Sometimes Layla will still sing it to herself whenever she has nightmares, although now she has Sulu lying next to her willing to comfort her.

She actually winds up developing a kind of unexpected bond with Spock; they bond over being seen as the cold and emotionally distant ones on the crew, and often "hang out" by sitting in silence together, both of them doing their own thing.

Although she doesn’t really want kids, Layla thinks that if she had Sulu ever did have children, she would want to name one Manish if it was a boy, after her father, or Sanjona if it was a girl, after her mother.

Layla actually has a really nice singing voice, even if she doesn’t showcase it very often. Sulu and Chapel are pretty much he only people she will sing for, and Sulu always looks at her with the biggest possible heart eyes whenever she does.

She thinks it would be really fun to have a pet snake, even if pets aren’t allowed on the Enterprise. Sulu would likely try to help her sneak one onboard to keep after they find one on a mission, but it very much would not go well.

While she absolutely refuses to put any cream or sugar or any kind of flavoring in her coffee, she puts plenty of both in her tea. Sulu finds it baffling, while Spock seriously contemplates asking Kirk to kick her off the crew whenever he sees her heaping sugar into a teacup.

Due to all her experience with stealth, Layla is incredible at slight of hand tricks and is usually the one put in charge of snatching smaller objects on missions if it’s needed.

Their berserk button: Many things (😅), but especially when people try to excuse or dismiss horrible things done a long time ago because they’re “in the past”. Few things piss her off more than people trying to diminish the impact of horrible things just because they weren’t done recently.

Why their name was chosen: The name Layla means night, and since she was born at exactly midnight, her parents thought it suited her.

Their favorite 2020s song: “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish.

Their biggest fear: That her parents and sister would be ashamed off all the crimes she’s committed and the things she’s done.

One turn-on of theirs: Competency. People being good at what they do definitely as the power to get her going.

Their go-to sleepover activities: She doesn’t really have sleepovers, and she certainly never had one before joining the Enterprise crew.

What candles they'd get at Bath & Bodyworks: Bubbly Rosé; she likes how light and fresh the scent is, even if she’ll punch Sulu for teasing her about sniffing a bright pink candle.

A moment where they reached their breaking point: After yet another attack on the Enterprise crew, when Kirk was seriously injured and even Bones wasn’t sure if he’d survive. Layla had been through losing so many people she cared about before, and the thought of Kirk, the first person since her family to actually believe in her and give her a chance, dying sent her spiralling, punching all the walls in her room and ending up curled up in Sulu’s arms numb with fear and sadness.

Whether they're organized or slobby: Intensely organized - she always had to be when she was a thief and spy, and she never really broke the habit.

Their favorite feature about themselves: Her determination.

We're pretending she actually has a role in the movies instead of just being mentioned) and I was very curious to see if you have a fancast for her, if she was in the newer films??

I know there’s Jess Bush who plays the character in Strange New Worlds (The new tv series with Paul Wesley and Ethan Peck as Kirk and Spock), but my curiosity is very edger to know, who’d play her in the Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto films?!? 😉

Now, Jess Bush is amazing in Strange New Worlds, and when I was first considering Layla and their relationship I was just going to say she was in the movies too, but I did reconsider that and I finally settled on Nurse Chapel being played by Dianna Agron!! I really think she fits the role and could play Christine well, plus I think she bears somewhat of a resemblance to the actress who plays Christine in the original series, so she’s perfect!!

Thanks so much the this, Kass!! I will share a few facts about my new Star Trek OC, Layla Dupreti!!

She's an OC for the newer movies with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, rather than the original series.

She's a Sulu ship.

Layla is a skilled thief who's been renting her incredible stealth skills out for hire since she was only a teenager, after losing her family and needing a way to make money for herself. This does result in her being paid very well, but it also means that she often finds herself working for some very dangerous people, and roped into jobs that have dangerous consequences if she refuses to do them.

A prime example of this being when a very threatening group of people pay her to stow onto the USS Enterprise at its next stop and make off with their new load of cargo. The cargo is medicine and sorely needed on the planet the Enterprise is taking it to, so Layla really doesn't want to steal it, but she'd rather be a bad person who steals much-needed medicine than be dead, so she agrees to it anyway.

She then winds up getting caught, but rather than keeping her as a prisoner and subjecting her to Starfleet justice, Captain Kirk feels bad after hearing Layla's story and decides to let her off the hook, provided she stay on the Enterprise and take a job as a yeoman (because really, is it even Jim Kirk if he doesn't have a soft spot for young people with rough pasts?).

Layla is very rough around the edges, due to the way she grew up - she's closed-off, has a hard time recognizing or caring how other people are feeling, and doesn't trust easily, or even really at all. But the longer she spends on the Enterprise, around people who are kind and accepting and willing to give her a chance, she begins to relax and open up just a little.

(Not that she ever really loses her sharp tongue or reluctance around new people; you can take the cat out of the alley, but you can never really take the alley out of the cat.)

One of the first people on the Enterprise she starts to develop a bond with is Christine Chapel (we're pretending she actually has a role in the movies instead of just being mentioned), and the two of them even have a little flirtation for a while, but it never really goes beyond that; they have fun flirting with each other, but they know they're much better off as friends. (Plus Chapel sees the way Sulu looks at Layla and she would never want to step on his toes like that.)

She also develops a kind of unexpected bond with Spock; they bond over being seen as the cold and emotionally distant ones on the crew, and often "hang out" by sitting in silence together, both of them doing their own thing.

She and Sulu are definitely the grumpy/sunshine, golden retriever boyfriend/black cat girlfriend, "take my knife" boyfriend/"I already have it" girlfriend, and we love it for them <;3.

Speaking of knives! Layla actually has a matching set of knives, given to her as payment for one of her first jobs, that she takes with her everywhere and always keeps at her side. She's named them Castor and Pollux, and they're basically her children.

I haven't made an official intro post for her yet, but I'm very excited to do that and explore her and her character further!!

I’m gonna do the original series instead of the movies for this, hope you like it!!

Probably a Sulu ship? I just feel like that man needs so much more love.

OC’s name is Layla Dupreti, and she’s a skilled thief who winds up stowing away on the Enterprise after being hired to steal some of the cargo they’re transporting.

The only thing is that the cargo’s medicine and she really doesn’t want to steal it, but the people who hired her are very powerful and terrifying and basically threatened to kill her if she didn’t get the cargo for them. And after she winds up getting caught by Captain Kirk and explains all of this to him, the captain of the Enterprise makes the decision to let her stay on and join the crew. (Because it’s Jim, and, really, is anyone surprised he’d have a soft spot for a rough-around-the-edges thief?)

Layla is given a position as a yeoman, and though she doesn’t hate it, it takes a while for her to adjust to life on the Enterprise. She’s not used to being around people who are so bright and cheerful, people who are nice to her just because, not because they’re trying to get something from her.

And she’s especially not used to people flirting with her and smiling at her all the time - which Sulu does. At every opportunity.

My bisexual badass does have a bit of a flirtation going on with Nurse Chapel for a while, but she and Sulu do eventually get together (to both the joy and chagrin of many crew members, depending how everyone placed their money in the betting pools that were going).

They are very much a grumpy x sunshine, "take my knife boyfriend" and "I already have it" girlfriend type couple, and I love that for them. 🥰

Speaking of knives! Layla is amazing with them, and she has her own set of two matching ones that she never goes anywhere without. Their names are Castor and Pollux, and they're basically her children.

Their first-ever Halloween costume: She’s never worn one - they didn’t celebrate Halloween on her home planet, and she still refuses to get dressed up for the Enterprise parties.

Their favorite kind of weather: Nice and hot, but with a bit of a warm breeze. That was sort of the default state of the weather on her home planet, and she finds that it reminds her of home.

What extracurriculars they do in school: Her school on her home planet didn’t offer any extracurriculars, and she stopped going to school after her family was killed and she fled her home planet.

Their favorite word: Deadly.
