17 & 21 for Pannolaire and Runalenwe? c':
17. What does your oc like to eat? How much food do they eat? Can your oc cook, and can they do it well?
being that i am culinarily inexperienced i had a lot of trouble figuring out what their picnic would consist of in that one fic... shellfish were there i remember that. there's so much damn water everywhere on that island they've got to love seafood
runalenwe i feel has a more "refined" palette compared to pannolaire, she's from a legitimately prestigious noble family and so was nursed on the finest of fine dining. i bet she enjoys a good cheese. imagine how crazy elven cheesemongers could get. this cheese has been aging since the dawn of the third empire. wine too, of course. runa likes things to be rich in both taste and meaning, meals that are almost art or performance with their themed and orderly courses taking you through this big journey. pannolaire puts a little less stock into that sort of thing and might even be that kind of scholar who forgets to eat sometimes, running on coffee into the wee hours (runalenwe right beside her in the reference section but still acting superior because she remembered to have a snack beforehand. and maybe she packed pannolaire one as well, since clearly she's so forgetful sometimes.) runa has no good reason to know how to cook other than like, her baroque romance with pannolaire. and runa thinks her own cooking sucks it's passable but not to her. pannolaire can cook fine enough, she really enjoys shellfish
21. How picky is your oc about their gear? Do they have different equipment for different adventures, or is it the same suit of armor for everything (not counting upgrades like from steel to ebony)?
ok so gear... pannolaire is not really the adventurous sort, more of a true scholar than runalenwe, who is also a powerful wizard. though i guess pannolaire will end up on an adventure eventually... they're both kind of "i have a system" people, they have their ways of doing things and cleave closely to them. pannolaire is very stylish though and might not be able to help herself from having a few changes or going a bit more flamboyant than is necessary with her robes... runalenwe feels she only needs her enchanted battlemage robes, a staff, and her deep pool of magicka for any adventure.

Folklore
Two apprentices make their way to the shore of the Isle of the Wise, basket and blanket in tow, already chattering away with one another. Although the College of the Sapiarchs has a reputation its rigorous and cutthroat academic atmosphere, even its most studious pupils are encouraged to take reprieves from their works, if not for their own benefit then for the benefit of the hardworking staff, those who have earned their own breaks from instructing and professing, as well as those who have important duties and research of their own to attend to.
Runalenwe and Pannolaire each possess their own cutthroat reputations, so it is with some surprise that their peers observe them taking these personal allowances of unstructured time not to get a leg up on their competition, but to get out from the halls of learning and into the natural splendor of the wild. They always take their breaks together, ostensibly to keep an eye on their most spirited and contentious academic rival, but also in the spirit of camaraderie; even as they have butted heads over their decades-long apprenticeships, they have found themselves rather transfixed on one another, interested, entertained, some might even say 'enamored.' It's true that they might consider themselves lovers, but they were not young or carefree, rather their love was ennobling and constructive, a means to an end- they would say- and all the fun they have along the way is merely incidental.
Runalenwe reaches what she considers a good place to rest, a nice shady spot under a tree, waves lapping at the shore before them. She unfurls the bright sheet they've brought at, inviting Pannolaire to take her seat before her, to which the other woman smiles and sets herself down very prim and proper. As Runalenwe joins her, she sets their woven basket down beside them, and continues on with their line of dialogue.
"Quite the ambitious project, a catalogue of Tamriel's famed magical artifacts," Pannolaire says. "Was her 12-page dissertation on the Flask of Lillandril not enough?" Her dark crest of brown hair seems to shimmer with life in the sun's light, as does the dress of decorative feathers and scales that she's donned instead of her apprentice's garb. Her companion thinks she cuts a figure rather like a bird of paradise, head held high against her collar of colorful plumage.
"Oh, I'd be fascinated to hear how many she can turn up." Runalenwe replies as she gets comfortable, propping herself up with an elbow against the blanket. "The research will be interesting- and her reports are always wonderfully detailed to be sure. The problem is by just 20 years time, I'm sure we'll be made aware of several new artifacts, or new qualities to the ones we already know, and all her work will be made obsolete. That's the problem with such presumptuous 'catalogues', better to channel your focus on just one thing. She clearly wishes she could be Sapiarch of just about every discipline!" She laughs, a few strands of her curly straw-colored hair swinging free of her top-bun. It's a noble laugh, haughty and mocking, yet it touches Pannolaire just the same as the warm bubbling laugh that came out of her honestly, most often when they were alone.
Pannolaire unpacks the food she'd brought, laying out the small spread as they continue to speak. Rolls of bread, fresh fruit, aged wine, and shellfish. "Which single artifact would you focus on?" Pannolaire glances up as she hands her a warm roll. "Some destructive staff? A weather worker?"
She chuckles, taking a small bite and clearing her mouth before responding. "Oh, Pannolaire, I've more interests than just shocking the daylights out of things! It's funny you should ask, actually."
"It is?" Pannolaire says.
"Yes, and I'll tell you why." Runalenwe grins.
Pannolaire smiles as well, cracking into a shellfish with practiced grace. "Please do."
"You are, I'm sure, familiar with the Ring of Phynaster? Artifact created by the ascended Aldmeri sorcerer Phynaster, great explorer and adventurer, a hero of the High King Aurthelel's court?" Pannolaire nods, not speaking for modesty as she samples some fruit. "It provides the wearer with protection against magics and poisons- it's popularly believed to have been created to facilitate in Phynaster's daring yet dangerous lifestyle, and even to have aided in his mythical long stride. But this story has been confused with time- it is misunderstood by so many of the scholars of Tamriel, those who forget that Phynaster was once one of us, a mortal, with mortal wants, mortal acquaintances."
Pannolaire watches Runalenwe as she orates, every word uttered with such a poise to belie rehearsal, and yet her character is so spontaneous, like an arc of lightning from a hand, or the first crackle of thunder. These qualities make her quite the speaker to spectate, and so she hangs on her every word.
"Phynaster himself was quite a cautious sort- his stride wasn't simply long, it was measured, well-conceived through careful calculation. His safety and longevity was more or less the product of a wise and careful mind. He did not forge his famed ring for his own sake, but for the sake of a lover." Runalenwe's lips curve into even more of a satisfied smile, the kind that tells Pannolaire she's hanging knowledge over her head right now, a coy mocking gesture. She shoots her a look as though to say 'don't leave me in suspense', and the other apprentice continues on. "A certain firebrand, another mage of Aurthelel's court, the oldest and most venerable court of Alinor, composed of only the most respected ancestors; Phynaster, Syrabane, Ruilil, Peregrine- even noble Trinimac brushed shoulders with her and counted her as his peer, as well as his comrade in arms. She was Eeartora the Tempest, queen of the skies, her words commanded storms and her spells sundered coral citadels to the depths of the sea, all to be forgotten as her own legend grew. It was she who caught the first Alinor Sunbird and brought it, unscathed, to the feet of King Aurthelel, and it was she who first mounted a great gryphon and rode it, as Welkynar, into battle."
Her audience of one helps herself to some shellfish as the other sings the praises of this noble and venerated ancestor. Runalenwe considers herself a woman of action, but Pannolaire finds her waxing lyrical on the matters of magic, of magicians, and most anything having to do with her noble clan of wizards. "That certainly sounds like the type of woman who could benefit from such a ring." Pannolaire remarks, smiling and discarding the now emptied remains of her morsel, golden eyes locked on her companion.
"Indeed!" Runalenwe agrees heartily, laughing softly to herself. "And that is what he must have thought, for with her in mind he endeavored to create the powerful artifact that we know today. She was its first holder, and she would go on to bequeath it to her descendants, before ascending to join with her lover in Aetherius..." Her smile lingers, Pannolaire can feel the purposeful pause she is taking and raises a hand to her lips as she chuckles for her lover's theatrics. "Eeartora's line would follow in her wake, living as war mages, welkynars, and studious heroes of their eras. What's more," She raises her chin proudly at this, the rays of sunlight giving a glow to her tan skin. "Her line leads directly to yours truly."
"Ah, I see... no wonder you were going out of your way to flatter her to such a degree." Pannolaire remarks, smirking behind her gloved hand.
Runalenwe scoffs, but smiles. "I can't be shamed for honoring my ancestors, can I?" And with that, she reaches down and helps herself to some fruit, satisfied with her piece.
Her lover gives her a moment's rest, then says something with no other goal than to prod at her ego. "I'm not sure I believe you. I mean, such a famed and legendary ancestor- I've known whole hosts of wizards who give her worship."
Runalenwe, true to form, almost chokes on her apple. "You don't believe me!?" She asks with raised brows, somewhat aware of the game they now play, somewhat genuinely scandalized.
"I'm not sure if I believe you." She corrects her.
"I'll have you know there are extensive genealogical records in my family's tomb!"
Again, Pannolaire laughs behind her hand, and her lover's eyes trace the glimpse of her lips. "Well then, you must take me there on our next sabbatical."
This time, Runalenwe's laugh is brash and untempered, her grin wrinkles her freckled face and her shoulders bob up and down. "Sabbatical! Oh, how rich- what are we, twelfth years???"
Pannolaire laughs along with her, laying beside her, sharing this bright and tranquil day all to themselves. Their hearts are light- they race when they stack their projects up against one another's, when they give presentations knowing that the other is watching, whenever they hold formal dialogue with their peers and mentors watching. How odd it is that their hearts race now, alone together, wearing no uniform and beheld to no observation, no assessment, free to be as they are. Runalenwe's hand finds its place in Pannolaire's, and after an interlude of silence and pecking at their meal, one speaks back up.
"...I'm no good with enchanting, but," Pannolaire says, dark lids drooping as her eyes wander out to sea. "I'm a fool for such romantic gestures... I would love to make you something, something just for you." With these words she shuffles up against Runalenwe's side, leaning against the other woman.
Runalenwe raises her arm to wrap around Pannolaire's waist, pulling her closer still. She leans in to press her head against the other's. "How sweet." Her forehead lies against her temple, her lips hover about her ear as she speaks softly. "What would you make for me, Pann?"
Pannolaire thinks on her skill sets, shifting about with a small bubble of nervousness. She lets herself fall closer against Runalenwe's soft embrace, letting out a long sigh. "A book on etiquette, perhaps."
The other woman chuckles. "I'm classically trained, love."
"In Aldmeri, sure. But would you know how to say 'good day' to a Nord?" Pannolaire retorts.
She laughs again, and for lack of a response presses her lips against her cheek. Pannolaire laughs too, forgetting the lunch they'd packed and shifting about to bury her face in the crook of her lover's neck, leaving a couple of black marks where she plants her kisses. Arms wrapped around her, Runalenwe replies. "Do they have those- good days- in that frigid country of theirs? Honestly, I'd be shocked if they see the sun."
Pannolaire pulls away only to smile and laugh at her peer. "Of course they see the sun!" The two chuckle on that point for a moment, before she settles in once again. "Well, actually, there is an interesting phenomenon that occurs at extreme northern latitudes- sunless days- they only happen at select parts of the year though..."
Runalenwe, content to hold her lover's body as she goes into a long tangent about novel astronomical phenomena and the Nordic holidays that coincide with them, closes her eyes and smiles. Her hand slowly traces Pannolaire's side, gentle and unobtrusive, as not to distract her from her speech.
She easily goes on for nearly half an hour, and it's only Runalenwe's reminder of the cooling food that makes her take pause, before the two resume their dialogue. They continue on like this until the sun dips down, embraced by the sea.

4, 10, 30, 45 > character questions asks
i have randomly chose ocs for these questions... runalenwe, pius, hjulde, and peyzae
RUNA
4. Has your character ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them? If so, does anyone else know?
runalenwe was shipped out of the college of the sapiarchs as an apprentice due to the thalmor wanting to put more magical muscle into their mainland holdings, particularly newly acquired anequina and pelletine. getting a look at how things were going in the aldmeri dominion outside of her academic bubble definitely opened runalenwe's eyes to how fucked up the thalmor were, and it became increasingly clear that she wasn't being sent as some kind of diplomat or representative of the college, they wanted her to aid in training an army of battlemages for an upcoming conflict with the empire. before being shipped out she'd sort of revolved her entire life around the college of the sapiarchs, on venerated aldmeri tradition and the prestige and pedigree of her noble clan, but seeing the way the bosmer and khajiit chafed under the expanding influence of the dominion put her on the path of abandoning that cushy summurset life to become a revolutionary. she and pannolaire shared these "so i found out about the thalmor-" moments when they reunited
PIUS
10. Does your character feel more comfortable with more clothing, or with less clothing?
i dont think he has a strong feeling one way or the other. his reflection weirds him out a bit but he doesn't pay much mind to his appearance, he just Is and allows himself to exist
HJULDE
30. What does your character find repulsive or disgusting?
nothing natural, that's for sure. even the grossest bits of nature are just part of the big lovely mess to her- she has these vague notions of like, honor, or just not being an asshole, and finds certain traits in people repulsive. she's not a big fan of opulent people, people who turn their noses up at others, or who take advantage of the helpless. she's really not a big fan of the sorry state that skyrim's in during the game
PEYZAE
45. What does your character believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?
hmm ive been kinda undecided on peyzae's spirituality... i feel like her falmer clan might worship namira, primordial darkness and bugs and decay, all those comforting things, so she'd probably assume she's going to be allowed to naturally decompose and become part of the world like that. i don't think she considers her own mortality very often, despite the dangerous adventurous life of surface hopping she leads, but it doesn't bother the, more than anyone else is bothered thinking abt death. mushroom afterlife isn't so bad

i love that art of pannolaire & runa, they look like such interesting characters. have you talked about them here on your blog before?
i have!! here's a few posts x x x !
there have been a few new developments, mostly abt their backgrounds. runalenwe comes from a long line of noble wizards, descended from the aldmer sorceress eeartora the tempest, and is attending the college to redeem her clan's prestige after her father didn't make the cut when he tried to get in a couple centuries ago. pannolaire obviously wants the prestige of being a sapiarch but has some secret lore, her mother was part of the mythic dawn and during her time their uncovered secrets that incriminated the thalmor- they had some foreknowledge of the oblivion crisis and chose to lay in wait instead of preventing it- and she gradually pieces more of this story together and it's part of her realization that there are bigger things to worry about than being a sapiarch, like a totalitarian regime manipulating a culture's damaged natural pride to lead a campaign of world domination.
i still need to iron out some details about them, so asks are appreciated :)

if you don’t mind id love to hear about the homoerotic academic rivalry... runalenwe sounds so cool i dig the lightning blasts
there’s a lack of concrete details buuut
basically runalenwe and pannolaire have been acolytes at the college of the sapiarchs for a long time, somewhere between 50-100 years, and they’re both bent on ascending to full sapiarchship for all the prestige and authority that the position entails. i don’t think they’re competing for the same spot, but they come into conflict in the aftermath of the void nights, when the thalmor alert the college that they’ll be sending some acolytes to the elsweyr to “improve aldmeri edification”, it’s worded as a great honor and a service to alinor but the altmeri doublespeak is clear: it’s not an auspicious position, they’re going to be shipped away from their homeland to the middle of nowhere, and runa and pan are the top picks so they have to passive aggressively insist to the powers that be (presiding sapiarchs, thalmor agents, whoever) that the other one would be the MUCH better choice to represent the aldmeri dominion. the vague outline is that runa argues pan is so charismatic and would be a great diplomat, and “did you know that one of her earliest essays was an anthropological dissection of khajiiti political systems and power dynamics? it’s a great read, honestly.” and pan insists that runa is one of the most talented spellcasters among them and would be best to display the magical might of the altmer, “not to mention what a terrific instructor she is, if edification is the goal of this endeavor that there would be no better learning tree to plant in elsweyr.” i think runa gets shipped off and then pannolaire’s like “ahaha perfect. but why i am i so sad” and that’s sort of the pitch. the idea of them becoming anti-thalmor insurgents and girlfriends feels like a likely endgame for them

9, 24, & 35 for sapiarch lesbians >:)
ooh boy.. havent thought abt these two in a long time.
9 - Do they discuss big issues? Religion? Marriage? Children? Death?
they are both big talkers and a lot of their relationship as student peers is defined by this sense of competition, i feel like they'd straight up have debates with each other over certain matters of interest, MOSTLY their fields of study and dissertations given by other students- part of being a sapiarch is being the arbiter of tradition and the leading authority on sciences and other scholarly matters, despite the fact that they're gunning for specific positions (war magic and some type of anthropology) they sort of need to be well versed in all manner of things in order to best represent the sapiarchs
religion is VERY important to altmeri society and thus they discuss it on length, runa coming from a noble background of traditionalists and pannolaire meanwhile having an oddly more outsider view of things (they may get into topics runalenwe's relatives would consider a cheeky bit of heresy) could definitely see some kind of conversation about family, another emphasized part of life in alinor, that strays coyly into what could be considered subtext of them talking about going through domestic things together
24 - Any doubts about the relationship?
the thing is that their relationship, something very ill defined and mostly implied to one another through indirect gestures rather than defined out loud by either of them, comes secondary to their academic careers. and because that's, y'know, a very hands-off little-to-no-communication style of romance, the two often second guess themselves and what the future might bring for them. feels like they could go on and off at various times, hold things against one another, romance is all so difficult when you're in the most prestigious college in your entire culture and subject to the suffocating etiquette of high altmeri society, ESPECIALLY when you're trying to be a social climber and overachiever, and thus wouldn't dare embarrass yourself in front of everyone by engaging in some frivolous unprofessional relationship with a peer.
35 - Do they bring out the best in each other, or the worst? Do they have a fatal flaw?
for all their constant fretting and overanalyzing things, sometimes when they're together they daintily brush upon genuine intimacy and vulnerability with one another and form a connection that goes beyond their callings as sapiarchs. but from their point of view, they bring out the "best" in each other because they push each other to do better, they excel because of their relationship, and it might be fucked up and shallow to say but if it didn't reflect positively on their performance, it's entirely possible that they wouldn't go through the effort. study buddies to academic rivals to lovers. as much as this is a good thing in some ways, i think it's also a bad thing, it pits them against each other in an unhealthy way and ultimately leads to them being separated for years, a period during which they realized "hm. i may have taken her for granted"

the thing about runa and pan's passive aggressive war to get the other one shipped off so that they can stay at the college is that, by all means, pannolaire is the better choice. she's about humanities, anthropology, she could have helped foster better relations with the client-states of elsweyr with her extensive intercultural know-how, she'd make an amazing diplomat and representative of the aldmeri dominion. and yet runalenwe is the one who gets shipped out, the proficient sorceress and war mage, which is a twist, but also kind of foreshadows the fact that the thalmor have their sights set on violent expansion and conflict with the empire

48, 43 and 38 for Pannolaire and Runa!
48. what is one value they hold higher than any other, in others and in themselves? (e.g., loyalty, intelligence, compassion, responsibility, etc.)
they both lay a lot of value onto intelligence, which is why they're in this academic rival relationship- they're both geniuses and that's why they're attracted to one another (for the most part)- but personally...
runalenwe values ambition, or like, ambition with the skills to back it up. talent? she's got big goals of restoring her family's pedigree after her dad flunked out of the college hundreds of years ago, so she holds herself to this high standard of being brilliant and charming and powerful, and values these traits in others. pannolaire clearly has some kind of chip on her shoulder as well, this Presence about her that could fool you into thinking she's the most important person in the room. THAT's the sort of thing runalenwe cares about
and i guess pannolaire is kind of the same? i was gonna say "individuality" but that sort of like, headstrong independent thing IS sort of what runa's about too? or, the same thing viewed from different angles. pannolaire is there because she has big academic ambitions mostly- ambitions that reach beyond her allotted station in life (she lied her way in there) and is willing to betray tradition and respect to get them. runa doesn't really know this until much later, but it really is all about putting yourself first with these two.
43. are they patient or impatient? what situations would make them feel one or the other?
they're both fairly patient but in like, an unprofessional unfiltered setting runa is definitely less patient than pannolaire is. things usually come easier to runalenwe than pannolaire, so some of them are more or less used to waiting around.
when i try to envision a situation i just think about them both being antsy about who the thalmor are going to be shipping off to anequina, getting impatient about the lengthy decisionmaking process, stressed with the complicated feelings of getting one over on each other and potentially never seeing them again. runa gets impatient about receiving things, pannolaire gets impatient about receiving news.
38. do they like art? what form?
pannolaire is BIG into haute couture, which on summurset can get absurd. the inner turmoil of not being noble but being in love with high fashion. she definitely likes literature too, especially naturalist descriptions of faraway places
runalenwe likes performance art (with magic, obviously) and music quite a bit too. she's only MODERATELY into fashion- honestly for her its more about performance, clothing to accentuate certain things and enhance a social performance before just looking aesthetically good.

my sapiarchs have annoying traits. runalenwe is from a noble family which is a negative trait in and of itself but she's also a braggart and over confident and thinks she's better than everyone.
viv is very unmotivated and kind of pessimistic ig?
i tried to think of anything at all for alessia and all i came up with was "would push a friend into a river with zero hesitation"

i have No clear plan w my sapiarch acolyte ocs bc it’s basically like oh ruthless academic women have a rivalry and are attracted to one another in a way that they can’t see past the competitive academic institution they find themselves in and as soon as pannolaire has “won in effect by convincing the thalmor that they should ship runalenwe off to elsweyr, it only strikes her how unfulfilling her work and life becomes as this person so important to her has been taken away from her day to day life and it all sort of hits that maybe it wasn’t all about the destination of becoming a sapiarch, it was about the journey to get there and the witty companion she had along for that ride plus the both of them get a much clearer view of the thalmor as they actually look out over the walls of their college and see what’s happening in the outside world, runalenwe especially as she enters a completely different kind of cutthroat altmeri hierarchy stationed in anequina and sees the obvious onset of the great war coupled with the cold grip of the dominion spreading over valenwood and the kingdoms of elsweyr. endgame for them is becoming anti-thalmor agents and girlfriends but exactly what they’re doing/when they’re doing it is lost on me
