"Oh, you're home", she says from where she's standing in the kitchen after hearing the sound of the door opening and then closing again.
Striding inside the apartment after kicking her shoes off, Tiffany stops right in front of her girlfriend with arms crossed against her chest and a not very amused expression on her face. The grey dog is barking at her feet, wanting some affection from the recent incomer. Tiffany steals a quick glance at the small dark animal before returning to stare at the woman.
TaeYeon stops herself from leaning in to peck her girlfriend's lips when she realizes Tiffany is not in a good mood. She frowns, tilting her head the slightest as she glances at the woman once again, yet paying attention on pouring the hot water in her mug carefully, "What's wrong? Did something happen at work?"
"Am I some kind of charity case to you?", Tiffany asked without hesitation.
"W-What?!", the older one asked, not believing her ears. Taeyeon set everything on the counter, turning her body so she could face Tiffany as well, confused eyes searching for any kind of sign that Tiffany was not serious.
She could not find it and it got her worried.
Her mind is working quickly, trying to understand Tiffany's words and remember if she has said something wrong to get the woman upset like that. But the only time they actually talked that day was before Tiffany left home to work and through texts, with Tiffany reminding TaeYeon to pick up Zero from the pet salon. Nothing else. She was sure of it.
"What do you mean? What are you talking about?"
"Forget it", she huffs before marching out of the kitchen to the hallway, heading to their bedroom.
Taeyeon trots her way to the other, "Tiffany! Wha— Stop!", she grabs her by the wrist, not letting her take any additional step away, "What is going on?"
"It's nothing, TaeYeon. I'm just mad and tired", she explains after taking a deep breath to calm herself down. Which didn't help at all, "Please, let go of me".
Taeyeon does as she's told, but doesn't fail to follow the other closely, eyebrows furrowed in confusion and concern.
"You are mad, so of course it's something. What is it?"
"I don't wanna say."
"So it is something."
"..."
For a moment, Taeyeon just stands there by the door, watching Tiffany making herself busy around the room, taking off her jacket, putting her purse away, checking her messages on her phone, picking up a new and clean set of clothes so she can take a shower. Her mind has been working non stop since she read a few words, that were the reason of her distress, a couple of hours ago. So yes, that's what the woman feels she needs right now, a very long hot shower.
But Taeyeon is on her way.
"Let me pass, please."
"You're not a charity case."
"TaeYeon... Let's talk about this later, okay?"
"But, baby—"
"Please?"
After a soft sigh, Taeyeon nods and takes a step aside, letting Tiffany make her way to the bathroom.
When Tiffany is done after half an hour later, Taeyeon is snuggling with Zero on the couch after drinking her tea, watching some animated movie. At the time she hears steps coming from the hallway and heading to the kitchen, Taeyeon sits straight, watching the dog jump off the couch and run in search for his mommy.
Tiffany returns a minute later with a can of soda in hands, already open. The brunette takes a seat on the couch, a considerable distance between herself and the other woman who's watching every move she makes as Zero lies on the carpet, eyes attentive on both figures. Tiffany feels Taeyeon's gaze without ever taking a glance at her direction, just paying attention on drinking her soda. The silence stays there for a few more minutes, just the soft sound of the animated characters coming from the TV, until Taeyeon can't take it anymore.
"Are you going to explain to me why would you say that?"
"..."
"Miyoung..."
Hearing her korean name and the tone of Taeyeon's voice, she can't help but turn her gaze from the screen in front of her to a pair of worried dark brown eyes staring back at her. She sighs again, placing the can on the coffee table, "It's stupid. You'll laugh."
"I promise you I am not going to laugh", she lifts her pinky to show Tiffany she's being sincere. Her heart starts to pound faster at the look on her girlfriend's face and promptly moves herself closer to her, a hand resting on her knee now, for reassurance, "Please, tell me what's wrong so I can at least try and make it up for whatever I've done to make you feel like that."
Tiffany shakes her head softly, "You didn't do anything."
"So— Someone said something at work? Was it Sooyoung again, because I swea—"
"No! No. She didn't say anything this time. It was, mm...", she bites the inside of her cheek, "Remember you promised, okay?" Taeyeon nods and Tiffany looks down at her hands now fidgeting with the hem of her own shirt. "I read something on the internet that got me a bit insecure."
"Oh? About me?"
"Well— Not exactly."
"Tell me. You're getting me nervous, baby."
"It was a zodiac thing."
"..."
"..."
Tiffany couldn't bring herself to move her eyes away from her lap at first, but after hearing nothing she was too curious so she had to confirm Taeyeon's reaction. And, yes, she knew the woman was fighting back the laughter.
"Kim Taeyeon, you promised!"
"I am not laughing! But, come on, Tiffany, what are you saying now?"
The younger then exhaled softly while sinking further on the couch, looking up at TaeYeon for a moment longer. The latter is just there, waiting patiently, trying to find a little bit of rationality so she can make sense of Tiffany's words.
"Okay, so, I was just scrolling through twitter like I always do, right? And someone retweeted something about 'what the signs are attracted to' and I got curious, I wanted to see mine. Well, I ended up reading yours and it got me thinking... A little bit too much, I guess. I-I'm sorry, I had time to think in the shower, so just please, don't mind me. I know it's silly".
Taeyeon takes Tiffany's hand between both of her own, fingertips caressing gently the skin, "It's not silly when you were clearly affected by it." Leans in and pecks a sweet kiss to her cheek, "What did it say? That we're attracted to charity?", the smaller woman grins a little. She could see Tiffany's cheeks were turning a soft shade of pink with the question.
"No", shakes her head, "It said that... Mm— Pisces are attracted to someone that... they can 'help'".
She blinks one time. Two times. Tilts her head to one side. And then to the other.
"I know, I'm a mess... I'm sorry!", Tiffany whimpers as she hides her face with both hands, not wanting Taeyeon to see her glistening eyes.
"No! Miyoung, stop. What's going on, really? Why are you like this all of sudden?", she scoots closer, an arm wrapping over her back to bring her near, "You are not a charity case. Hwang Miyoung. Where did you get this from?"
A pause, a gentle silence. Taeyeon carefully watching Tiffany as the latter thinks about her next words and if she should say anything about her insecurities in this relationship. In the end, she remembers how they talked about being sincere with themselves and their feelings. So Tiffany knew the answer to her interior question. It hasn't been a whole year yet since they got together officially, but it's Taeyeon, so she shouldn't be afraid to speak her mind and just talk to her, let her know what's been bothering her.
"I have nothing in this world, TaeYeon," she starts with a shaky voice while lowering her hands away from her face, "I don't have money or a car or even my own place now. My parents are gone for real. I-I have nothing to offer you. I'm a total loser and a big whiny mess!"
"Will you stop talking about yourself like that, please? I am not with you because I want your money or—"
Tiffany interrupts, "So why?"
"Why, what?"
"Why are you with me? That's what I've been thinking the whole day... It's— I have nothing— So... It... It made sense when I read it. You just like to help me because it makes you feel good. I am certainly not complaining about you taking care of me, because I don't even know where I would be right now if it weren't for you, but— Can you see where I'm coming from? Does it make sense at all?"
"Wait", Taeyeon shakes her head a bit while closing her eyes, repeating her words inside her head, "Tiffany, have I ever acted like I'm with you because I pity you or your situation?", Tiffany moves her head softly side to side, but TaeYeon keeps talking, "I mean— How can you say that's all there is? That helping you and taking care of you makes me feel good about myself, so that's why I'm in a relationship with you. Is that what you're saying?". Her eyes are sad and it's very clear to Tiffany, making her feel a bit guilty about how she expressed her own insecurities. "Don't you know me better than this?"
"I do, TaeYeon-ah, I do," Tiffany takes hold of Taeyeon's hands, tightly squeezing them to reassure not just her girlfriend, but herself as well. The brunette takes a deep breath, pondering for a moment what she wants to say inside her head before letting it out, not wanting to choose her words badly again. She wants Taeyeon to understand. She needs it. She can feel her heart beating faster against her rib cage, sincerely scared Taeyeon would be able to hear it.
"Sometimes... I feel like a I'm a big burden to you", again, her voice is shaking a little, tears returning to her eyes even as she tries hard to maintain her composure.
Taeyeon's eyes softens, eyebrows nearly touching when her whole body tenses a little bit in concern. Hearing those words, seeing her tearful and fragile eyes... It's new. Right, Taeyeon is aware that money is kind of an issue in the dynamics of their relationship, but she never actually stopped to think about how it truly must affect Tiffany. Therefore, she's all ears now and, inside, the older one promises herself to try and be more considerate and to listen to Tiffany with her heart open. She just lets her talk.
Then, Tiffany continues, "It even feels like I'm taking advantage of you and what you have. And— And I know you have heard it from your friends. I mean, I don't blame them."
She unintentionally eavesdropped a call between TaeYeon and Yuri one time. It made her feel like shit that her girlfriend had to defend her pride like she did, but since they were together for only a couple of months at the time, Tiffany didn't have the guts to say anything about it. Instead, she gave everything in her to show TaeYeon how much she loves her and how special the woman is to her, her personal possessions aside.
"Tiffany...", the woman softly whispers and the younger shakes her head a bit, again squeezing her hands.
"Listen, it's not your fault. It's just something we have to deal with, because let's face it, TaeYeon, we're in very different stages of our lives right now and that's fine! It's just how it is," she opens a small sad smile, letting go of one of Taeyeon's hands so she can wipe her wet cheek once a tear runs down, "I can't hide I feel insecure about it sometimes. Especially when you don't let me pay for stuff I'm willing to. It makes me feel— Well, I'm sorry, but to tell the truth, it makes me feel awful".
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ma—"
"I know. I know that. Still...", Tiffany shrugs lightly and closes her eyes when she feels her short girlfriend wrapping her arms around her, making her feel safe, just like the first Taeyeon hugged her close and tight. She will never forget how it felt back then. Good thing it hasn't changed a bit.
"I love you", TaeYeon says with all sincerity, pressing a kiss to the brunette's hair.
"I love you too", replies before sniffing, "And I'm sorry, but you'll have to remind me about it every now and then. At least for the next year or so until I can truly help you with the rent and all the bills".
"Tiffany—"
"It's not like I don't trust you, TaeTae," moves her head back a bit so she can look at her in the eyes again, "I do, I promise I believe in you. And I don't want to sound ungrateful, but there's this voice in my head and this feeling inside that hits home hard sometimes. It shouldn't, trust me, I know that. I'm so so grateful for you taking me in after— everything went downhill with my parents and with my apartment. I love and appreciate everything you keep doing for me. I owe you my life. But...", she sighs, fingers brushing a few strands of hair behind her ear before holding the collar of Taeyeon's shirt tightly to keep her close, "Being dependent affects me. I hate it. And to know that people who cares about you think I'm in this relationship because of selfish and petty reasons make things worse. Reading that stupid Pisces thing made me think that— that you're with me because you want someone to depend on you, that it feels good for your ego and tha—"
"Please, stop."
"TaeYeon, I'm just saying—"
"No!"
There's so much happening inside of Taeyeon, it almost feels like her heart is one with her stomach (weirdly). Because she's mad at the world, mad at her friends, at the person who wrote that specific tweet... she's mad at herself for making the woman she loves feel like that, but, still, she's full with tenderness and affection for this person in her arms. So, yes, maybe she's sick to her stomach because of how angry she is, but all the love inside of her and the big desire to make Tiffany happy makes her heart beats life out of it. Her heart is not sore like it was before she met this woman. It's stronger. It pulses hope in every new beat thanks to Miyoung.
"You have such a big gentle heart", Taeyeon says, her voice soft while fingers run along Tiffany's short dark tresses, "You have this bright smile that shines more than sun itself. The way you care about my feelings and how attentive you are of my needs every single day".
Tiffany bites her bottom lip when she feels it trembling a bit, her tears returning this time with intensity. Now she can't help them at all, not even if she tried hard.
With gentle touches, Taeyeon's thumb wipe the tears away. To no use since the woman won't stop silently crying.
"You're so transparent and you'd never take advantage of anything and anyone. I know that", she nods firmly and hears Tiffany sob. It hurts deep down, that sound breaks her heart and makes her shed a couple of tears herself, "You have this way of saying things with your eyes that I adore. And the way you touch me... The way you make me feel when you kiss me, when you look at me." She gets closer, foreheads touching and breaths mixing. Tiffany closes her eyes, but Taeyeon keep staring at her face closely, fingers stroking the soft cheek, "I've never met anyone like you, Hwang Tiffany. And I could be here for days just listing every single detail about you that makes me love the woman you are. I'm with you because I love you and every little thing about you. I don't care about money, you know that. We could be living on the streets, under a bridge, and I would be happy if you were there with me".
"Kim TaeYeon...", she whispers, voice failing for a second. Tiffany doesn't know what to say. Instead, she closes the gap between their lips, kissing the woman with every fiber of passion she owns inside of her.
They're lightly panting when Taeyeon breaks the kiss long minutes later.
"You're everything I need, okay? I need you, not the feeling of you depending on me. I don't care about that, Tiffany. I take care of you because I want you happy and I want you safe. I'm sorry for making you feel bad all those times, I will be more considerate from now on, I promise, but—... listen, I will never stop taking care of you, I'm sorry. I can't. I love you so much and the thought of you hurt or struggling makes me literally nauseous. If I can and you need it, I will help you".
Her shoulders don't feel that heavy now. Her eyes are stinging a bit from the crying. Face is all red and nose is running, but there's no place she would rather be than where she is right now. In Taeyeon's arms. Where she knows she'll always be safe. Even with all her insecurities... TaeYeon will keep her safe.
"Thank you", gently pecks her lips, "I love you and I believe you, TaeTae"
"Yes? Mm... Don't you have to check your horoscope first?", she asked with a side grin before it vanished from her face when Tiffany hit her hard on the thigh, "Ouch!"
"Idiot!"
"Okay, too soon... Sorry."
