The Mechanics of Hope
Kyle "Gaz" Garrick x Alex Keller
Single Parent Omega Gaz x Mechanic Alpha Alex Keller
It's always been Gaz and his daughter, Genevieve. Ever since she was born and her father had died in an accident, it'd been just them against the world. Well, them and four pseudo parents that Gaz had picked up. And two best friends.
Either way, he's not really interested in trying to expand what he has. He doesn't really date around, because he doesn't trust new alphas around his daughter.
Of course, one has become rather persistent in trying to court him. But, he doesn't know about Genevieve, and Kyle is positive he's not going to stick around once he finds out.
Warnings: ABO, talks of death, fem leaning terms for omegas

Gaz took a deep breath, holding his head for a moment and trying to push down the migraine that was building. He didn’t have time to see the doctor, again, and he knew it was just because he was pushing himself and his lungs were having trouble filling completely with air. He didn’t want to deal with it, though.
So, he just took a breath. “Genevieve Garrick!” He called, planting his hands on his hips and then going to her room, seeing her very quickly shove a tablet under her pillow. The tablet that “Grandpa Price” had gotten her for her birthday. She was only 7, she didn’t need a tablet…
He’d been ignored on this, though. Shaking his head, he went over and held out his hand. “Come on, just let me have it so it can charge at least.” He softened his tone. It had helped her… Laswell had installed a few speech apps on it, which was helping her communicate, so he supposed he couldn’t be too angry. Even still, it would have been nice to be backed up on something.
She seemed to pout as she gave him the tablet and then he shook his head, hoisting her up and putting her on his hip, ignoring how badly his back ached from her weight, though she was average weight for a seven year old. “Come on, school time.” He said, putting the tablet onto the wireless charging port that Price had so generously bought for it.
She didn’t protest like she normally did, which Gaz was grateful for. Though, he did suspect it had something to do with the Halloween Party that was happening that day. He sat down with her in his lap and helped her get the sparkly black socks she had begged for for her spider costume on.
“Grandpa Price is going to pick you up from school.” He informed her as he made her stand so he could get the hoodie he’d handsewn extra arms onto. They rose as she moved her arms and he’d also handmade her little sunglasses with extra eyes on them. “Are you okay with that?”
A grin spread across her face and she immediately nodded. “Ice cream?” She asked.
Gaz laughed. “I’m sure if you ask him, he’ll get you some. He mentioned ordering pizza on the phone.” A little sparkle came in her eyes, which were green, the only trait she didn’t seem to get from Gaz. “Come on, Mum’s got some errands to run, love.”
Gen put her arms up in the air and he gladly picked her up again, dreading the day she’d be too big for him to do that, though it seemed to approach faster and faster.
He grabbed her bag on the way out to the car and helped her into her carseat, though she could already buckle herself. He knew she would soon be out of one, but it was peace of mind until she was. He put the radio on to her favorite station and then started to drive, his mind wandering as it always did.
Gaz had been a teen mom, now only 22. And it had always been him and Genevieve. He wasn’t groomed by her father, no, in fact he’d been a very good partner, a fantastic alpha. Had been ready to step up and be her father, despite hardly being a year older than Gaz. Had even dropped out to get a good job and his family had given them a house.
But… death happens when you least expect it. He’d had a motorcycle and he’d actually been driving to sell it, since they’d need a better car. He was hit by a semi truck on the way there, died instantly.
The worst part was that it had happened while Gaz was in labor. His water had broke right after his boyfriend had left and he hadn’t wanted to distract him by calling him so he’d had his boyfriend’s mom take him. Got the call right after she was born.
Well, his in-laws support had only lasted as long as their son was alive, because now… they wanted nothing to do with Gaz or his daughter. They’d let him keep the house, which he still owned, but that was it save for enough money to put a down payment on a shitty car as long as he left silently.
Whatever, he hadn’t needed them, anyway. However, the car was a piece of shit. When Gen was only around 3 years old, it’d started to regularly break down and Gaz had had to start taking it to a mechanic. Well, only one hadn’t tried to scam him or overprice him since he was an omega, and that was Price’s shop.
Hell, Gaz had brought the car in to Price had been when Gen was severely overstimulated from the rattle of the engine, so she’d been crying and poor Gaz had been close to tears himself, trying hard to soothe her without breaking down.
Price had refused payment and had even fixed several other issues. One of these included calming Gen down, since one of his mechanics, another omega named Soap, who was actually only 17 at the time, had made silly antics which had had Gen, and maybe even Gaz, giggling softly.
It’d been a silly sight, Soap with his jumpsuit around his waist, doing a dramatic reenactment of a scene from Outlander, a romance show Gaz absolutely hated, but apparently Soap adored. He’d belted out lines, though, and both had clapped once he was done, as Price had came and told Gaz his car was fixed up. “Just come to me, for now.” Price had told him. “Don’t worry about money, just bring ‘er to me.”
Gaz couldn’t afford to insist to pay, so he’d instead broke down sobbing and thanking Price, who had seemed a little uncomfortable. The next time his car had broke down, he’d again gone to him, and Kate Laswell was there. She was an alpha, married to a sweet omega named Diane, and she invited Gaz and Gen to dinner.
From there, all three, and then later Price’s partner, an alpha named Nik, had become sort of like parents to Gaz. Grandparents to Gen.
Genevieve called Price and Nik Grandpa Price and Grandpa Nik, and she called Diane Mawmaw Diane, and Laswell was just Kate. Laswell apparently didn’t want to feel old so she’d asked to just be called Kate.
Soap was Uncle Soap, since Soap preferred masculine or alpha leaning terms, and his boyfriend, another omega named Roach, was called Auntie Roachie, though Roach detested the name. Soap had jokingly called him that, once, and Gen had stuck with it.
Roach was another godsend, actually. See, when Gen was four years old, she got diagnosed with autism. Gaz knew she got it from him but he wasn’t diagnosed and he could pretend he didn’t have it if he really tried. She… couldn’t. Later, he’d learned how bad the terms were, but low functioning had been what she was called.
Roach, however, had apparently been diagnosed similarly. He had given Gaz every resource he had, had told him the name of a child therapist who could help, and helped Gaz pick a speech therapy class for her. Roach was actually still primarily nonverbal because of his own autism.
So yeah, he hadn’t needed his inlaws. Fuck them.
But, at home, it was just him and Genevieve. Yeah, Soap, and later another omega friend named Rodolfo, helped him out a lot, but he tried not to ask too much.
It was him and Genevieve against the world…
He met his daughter’s eyes in the rearview mirror and then he watched her give him this big toothy grin, complete with a missing front tooth which had just recently fallen out. Price had made some big display of finding her a fancy box to leave it in, which had been so convenient since that meant Gaz didn’t have to desperately scramble to find her damn tooth under her pillow.
Then, he heard it. A clankering noise which had him fighting not to hit his head against the steering wheel. Immediately, Genevieve’s hands covered her ears, so he handed back her headphones and the ipod he’d gotten for her, just so she could have a way to block out the sound in the car. Had cost him a lot, but it didn’t have internet.
Ignoring a car honking behind him, he continued on to her school, going into the drop off lane. “Have a good day, Gen!” He told her as he unlocked the doors. She came up to the window so he smiled. “Remember, spiders don’t roar, they hiss.”
She giggled and nodded before hissing, having an easier time due to that missing tooth, though it whistled slightly. “Bye, bye, mama.” She said, which always had his heart warming. He wouldn’t push her, if she remained nonverbal the rest of her life. But, it always made him so happy to hear her say Mum or Mama.
“Bye, bye, sweet girl.” He murmured, leaning out of the car to kiss her head. He grabbed her headphones off her head since they’d both forgotten and then he tossed them into the seat beside him, watching her run up the stairs to the door.
She ran up, immediately, to another little girl named Dae, who also had a single mom named Kim Hong-Jin, though he preferred Horangi to his friends. If Gaz remembered correctly, it meant Tiger in Korean. They weren’t really close, but their daughters had found each other and so they interacted for playdates.
It was… actually a rather tragic story how Dae came to be. Made Gaz grateful for a lot.
Taking a deep breath, he decided to just not put it off, and drove the car to Price’s shop, deciding to just take the bus to run the few errands he needed to. It would be annoying to take groceries home on the bus, but… he’d manage.
He tilted his head at not seeing Soap’s car in the parking lot, though Soap had mentioned he was taking less hours since Roach had convinced him to take a few classes at the local college. Regardless, he parked and got out, going into the building.
There, he was greeted with two alphas, who he didn’t recognize at all. One, a woman, had a warm smile. Her jumpsuit was currently tied around her waist, though she was still covered in grease, and her hair was in a long single braid down her back. “Hello.” She greeted. “What can we do for you?”
The other, a male alpha, caught Gaz’s eye embarrassingly quickly. This may have to do with him being completely Gaz’s type. Gaz was tall for an omega, but this alpha was still Gaz’s height. Blonde, with a slightly fuller five o’clock shadow, and a warm half grin as Gaz stepped in. A sort of charming “how do you do” grin.
“I uh…” Gaz shook it off, quickly, and turned back to the woman. “Is Price in?”
“He is! He’s in his office.” She nodded. “Do you need to speak with him? He’s on lunch.”
“Oh, I can wait, then.” Gaz answered, feeling guilty for interrupting Price’s lunch. “Um, my name is Kyle-”
“Oh, don’t give that shit, Gaz.” Price chuckled, coming out of his office. “You don’t have to wait. I forgot the damn sack at home, anyway, so I was watching football.”
“Don’t you mean soccer, sir?” The male alpha chuckled, crossing his arms. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you watch American football.”
“I mean football, Keller. The right football.” Price glared at the alpha, but his last name stood out to Gaz. Ahhh, Keller. This must be Alex and Farah, then. Laswell had taken in both, sort of like Price had, though they’d apparently been away for college. Both were 24, if Gaz remembered correctly. “Anyway, can you just bring in his car? It’s the shitty Kia.”
“Hey!” Gaz laughed, defending. “It’s my shitty Kia, and it’s been pretty reliable. When… it’s not breaking down.” He muttered that last part, and then sighed. “It’s making that sound again…”
“Probably the belt, again.” Price shook his head. “That bloody thing goes through more belts than I do around Christmas. Farah, can you-”
“On it.” She gave a thumbs up. “Can I have your keys?” She asked Gaz, her eyes soft. “Please.”
Gaz relaxed and then got them out, handing them to her. “Thanks… I have some errands to run, so I’ll be back in a few hours. Please let me pay this time.”
“For a slipped belt?” Price laughed, indignantly. “Here, you can pay by letting me buy you a new car.”
“You’ve done enough…” Gaz shook his head. He’d feel awful if he let Price buy him an entire car. “I can’t let you do that.”
“Well, then, in the mean time… free service. Here, I really don’t want you taking the bus through the city.” Price got out a second set of keys, likely to his truck, and Gaz winced. “Don’t fight me, Gaz.”
Gaz… also really didn’t want to take the bus. “Fine, I’ll be back in a few hours.”
“Wonderful.” Price pat his shoulder and then immediately turned to Alex, who Gaz noted had been watching him the entire time. “Well don’t fucking dawdle, Keller! There’s shit to do!” He scolded before going into his office.
“There really isn’t.” Alex chuckled, just moving back behind the little counter. “Hence why he even took his lunch. Well, actually, he took it because Nik threatened to leave his ass if he kept overworking himself.”
Gaz laughed, softly, since that definitely sounded like Nik. “I don’t think we’ve met… I’m Kyle, like I said earlier, but pretty much everyone calls me Gaz.”
“Why?” Alex tilted his head, almost appearing to frown. “I um… sort of fail to see how that fits with Kyle…”
Gaz couldn’t help laughing, softly, since it made sense. “Price started to call me it. I’m not really sure why.”
“Ah. Well, the old man does funny things.” Alex laughed, softly. “I’ll let you get to your errands.”
“Thanks, I’ll let you…” Gaz paused, since Alex had just mentioned that it wasn’t busy.  “Well, be bored, I guess. Dawdle.”
Alex laughed, again, and Gaz hated how he flushed from the sound of it. Look, he hadn’t gotten laid in a while, okay? Taking a deep breath, Gaz shook his head. No, don’t go for it. Alphas didn’t want omegas who already had kids. They definitely didn’t want omegas who had the laundry list of health issues that Gaz did.
So, he just said another goodbye, and quickly left, gladly taking Price’s truck and going to run his errands, dropping the groceries off at home before filling the tank and coming back. It was… twice what he’d have to pay for his own car, but hey, free car service. And, he’d gotten paid a bit more that week, so he could afford it.
When he came back, he was surprised to see Price’s office was closed, which was odd, but Alex was still behind the counter. “Where’s Price?”
“Laswell called.” Alex explained, holding out Gaz’s keys. “Had an issue or something, so he rushed off. Took his other truck.”
“Ah.” Gaz nodded, taking his keys back and giving Alex Price’s keys. “Oh.” He hoped he’d still be picking Gen up, though he had about four hours left, anyway. Gen had an art club after school. “Thanks.”
“Hey, do you want to get coffee sometime?” Alex asked, which startled Gaz and had him blushing dark red. “Or… tea.” He chuckled.
Gaz couldn’t help laughing at the joke. “I…” No, he couldn’t. He did consider indulging for just one coffee date but… no. Alphas really didn’t like single moms. Even still, he didn’t want to just blow Alex off. He didn’t want to hurt his feelings. “I can’t…” He sighed, pretending to be forlorn. “I don’t date mechanics.” He joked.
“Oh, well if that’s the case, I’ll quit right now.” Alex joked, which made Gaz relax since that meant he had succeeded in not hurting his feelings. “I’m actually studying criminology. You date lawyers?”
“Too stuffy.” Gaz teased, leaning against the counter. “Too uptight.”
“I can be anything but uptight.” Alex grinned, leaning close.
God, Gaz wanted him so fucking bad but… he couldn’t. So, allowing himself one last disappointed sigh. “Sorry… I don’t date.” He smiled, apologetically. “You’re cute, though. Tell Farah thanks for fixing my car.”
That time, Alex did seem disappointed. “That’s alright.” He seemed to smile, anyway, before nodding. “Have a great day, Gaz.”
“You, too.” Gaz gave a little wave before heading off, trying not to dwell on his own disappointment too much. He reminded himself that single alphas weren’t looking for omegas like him.
As disheartening as that may be.

I already had this written when I received this ask, I'm not even gonna lie to you. Witch!Omega!Gaz and Pastor's Son!Alpha!Alex, smut, very very mild angst, dubcon if you squint rlly hard
--
It was June in the South, it was going to be hot. But.. fuck, did it have to be scorching? Alex was laying in just his boxers on the bed and he still felt like he could feel sweat rolling down his spine. It was a random thought, but he was so insanely grateful that his rut cycle had lined up that he wouldn’t have one until at least August.
Even with the fan full blast, Alex still could feel the heat surrounding him and pressing down on his body, coating every inch of his skin with obnoxious warmth. His father refused to waste money on AC, so that wasn’t running and wouldn’t run until July, at least. Alex didn’t really consider this fair, since his father was older and anemic, and both Alex and his mother ran hotter than the average alphas and omegas, but whatever.
But, it was a Friday, he didn’t have work, and he had nothing else to do but lay face down on his bed in the direct airflow of a heavy duty fan he blew about half of a paycheck on, and wait for his mom to cook dinner, since he’d just had lunch.
“Alex!” His father yelled, now banging on his door.
Wonderful.
His father was an aggressive alpha, so it was best to not keep him waiting. Instead, he got up, yanked on jean shorts and a tee shirt, and opened the door, doing his best to look polite. “Yes, sir?”
“John Price and his family are finally getting moved on, Selma Green just called me and told me. Now, as you know, his father used to be very generous to the church and town, so we want to make a good impression on him so he may continue this tradition.” His father stated, his voice gruff and his stance firm. He was pastor of the Church, so he always had to look commanding.
Alex… wished he could compare in his own, but he’d never managed. Maybe one day he would, but Alex didn’t think anyone found him intimidating or commanding. His best friend, Ghost, certainly didn’t.
Ghost, an atheist, and Alex weren’t really supposed to be friends. Their fathers hated each other, and Ghost wore black eye makeup despite being an alpha and listened to “satanic” music. However, he was funny, really down to earth, and the only person willing to be friends with Alex. All of the other teenagers had been worried Alex would tattle on everything they did to his father, who would in turn tell theirs. But.. Alex wouldn’t. And he never did.
Ghost had been very excited, as hard as it was to believe, about John Price moving in. Alex hadn’t had been able to get a straight answer as to why out of him, but he knew that Ghost was incredibly excited.
His father, and most of their small town, had been, as well.
So, Alex knew exactly what his father was about to do. Regardless, he nodded. “Alright… What do you need me to do, then?”
“Go and greet them, obviously. You’re my son, it’ll be seen as an act of goodwill!” His father said, as if the answer was obvious. To be fair, it was to Alex. “Dress nice, don’t dress like a delinquent. And don’t you dare consider taking that freak Riley with you.”
Alex resisted laughing because that had been exactly what he planned to do. He was still planning to go right by Ghost’s house and see if he wanted to tag along, since he was more than sure that Ghost would.
Instead, he solemnly nodded, ignoring the way his father’s eyes rolled, and smiled. “I will. I’ll get dressed and head right up there.”
“Good. Your mom said you can be late for dinner if you get caught up.” Alex’s father nodded, and then turned and left without another word.
Alex knew he was a disappointment to him, but he could have said goodbye.
Instead, Alex just changed his clothes as quickly as he could before rushing downstairs, kissing his mom on the cheek when he went through the kitchen. “I’ll try not to miss dinner.”
“Don’t appear rude by rushing away from them.” She immediately scolded, and Alex had to resist rolling his eyes. “We want them in the Church on Sunday, worshiping the Lord.”
“Yes, Mama.” Alex sighed, softly. She didn’t say goodbye, either, as he left, and he just shook it off as he went to his car, sliding into the driver’s seat. It was a nice car, the Pastor’s Son couldn’t be driving a clunker around. Before he got driving, he called Ghost. Both were the same age, too, and had gone to high school, together. But, Ghost lived alone, and Alex still lived with his parents.
He’d move out, eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later, but for now… It was just more convenient to stay at home. For the most part, unless he was being pushed to make a good impression on the town’s people, he was left alone by them. More alone than he’d like to be.
“I’m guessing this call has nothing to do with John Price finally arriving?”
Alex laughed, immediately, since Ghost knew him, or likely his father, very well. “Do you want to go, or not?”
“Obviously I want to go, Keller. God.”
Alex winced at the small amount of blasphemy and then laughed, again, as Ghost hung up the phone, starting to drive finally. He didn’t really know where he stood on God. He’d like him to exist, he thought it might sound nice. But… a lot of things added up less and less.
Ghost lived fairly close by, right on the edge of town, in a small apartment building. It was a nice little building and Ghost had already offered for Alex to move in with him when he finally moved out, but… if Alex moved out, he was leaving this town. He was getting far away from there. Maybe he’d move to the coast, live right by the ocean. He didn’t know, he hardly cared.
Ghost was sitting on the curb as Alex slowed by the apartment, and he immediately got up and jogged to Alex’s car, getting in the passenger seat. Neither greeted the other save for a short nod, before Alex was getting back on the road to John Price’s house. “I’ve heard he has three omegas with him. Two that are his kids, one that isn’t.”
“Rodolfo.” Ghost answered, nodding. “He’s under the old man’s care.”
“You know him??” Alex asked, surprised. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Know is a strong word. But… Sort of. And, I didn’t want your dad to find out.” Ghost sighed. “I knew you wouldn’t have told but…”
Yeah, Alex’s dad had a few ways of finding things out if Alex knew them. Went through his phone, which was why Ghost and Alex only called, talked to anyone he talked to. Hell, the others had been more likely to tell on Alex, rather than the other way around. So, Alex couldn’t find himself being that angry about it. “I get it.” Alex sighed, softly, and then shook his head. “So, what else do you know?”
“He’s older than he looks.”
Alex glanced at Ghost, raising an eyebrow, but he was only met with a shrug. “Cryptic. Great.” Alex shook his head, sighing. “Anything else?”
“His sons are named Kyle and Gary, both are omegas, but they go by Gaz and Roach. Both are adopted.”
“Ah.” Alex frowned, since that wasn’t really much to go off of. “How do you know them?”
“I know Roach, not his father.” Ghost answered, turning to look out the window, and Alex started to understand. Ghost must have something with Roach… but what? Both were only 18, he doubted Ghost would have had time to formulate anything too deep.
Even still, he understood that he wasn’t going to get much more out of Ghost, so Alex just turned the radio on, falling silent and leaning back in his seat as he continued to drive on to John Price’s house.
As he approached the open gate that led to the estate, house was less and less accurate of a descriptor in his mind. Instead, he realized it was a massive Manor, which sat atop an equally massive hill. It was a gorgeous property, surrounded by peach trees, which was Alex’s favorite fruit.
As they approached the house, he could see the massive moving truck that had people carrying boxes inside, already. Alex carefully parked, jumping as Ghost was immediately out of the car, and he shook his head, also getting up and putting on his best welcoming smile as he approached an older man.
However, the closer he got, the more he realized what Ghost’s statement meant. The man looked hardly older than 30, and with few wrinkles on his face. Even still, this face broke into a smile as they approached. “Hello,” Alex greeted, keeping his smile, “I’m Alex Keller. My father is the pastor at the Church. He wanted me to come up and say hello.”
“Ah.” John Price smiled, shaking his hand when Alex offered it. “I’m John Price, I know your father. Yes, yes, it’s nice to meet you.”
Alex relaxed, since he seemed nice enough. If Alex had had to go through this whole spiel with someone who was a massive asshole, he might have had a problem.
He glanced around, taking in everything that was around them. The moving truck was standard, just bigger than any that Alex had ever seen, and John Price was quick to go back to giving directions. However, a blonde woman, who looked much closer to the age of 39 that Price was supposed to be, was leaning against a Cadillac, smoking a cigarette. Alex approached her, smelling cigarette smoke and alpha, and offered his hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“It’s nice to meet you, too.” She answered, smiling. Her eyes, however, told Alex she already knew him in a very odd way. Her eyes told him that they were simply meeting again after years of being apart, but… he knew that wasn’t possible. Even still, there was almost something paternal in the way she shook his hand, and he noted that her skin was ice cold, even in the heat. “My name is Kate Laswell.”
“I’m Alex.” Alex repeated and nodded. “Are you friends with John Price?”
“Best friends.” She nodded. “My wife is already inside, resting, or she’d come out and greet you.”
Alex nodded in understanding, “that’s alright.”
Kate laughed, softly, “I’ve never had issues with the heat, but my wife does. I sympathize for you both. She also runs hotter than usual.”
Ghost’s real name suddenly floated through the air, tickling the hair on the back of Alex’s neck and then floating down his spine in a very odd and uncomfortable way. It lingered in his head and he didn’t understand why on earth he’d suddenly be having the thought of Simon on his mind.
However, it was good that he did, as Ghost was moving to the Cadillac, as a window rolled down and then a face was poking out of it. An omega, beautiful to a surprising extent, had laid his arms on the door, and laid his face on his arms, and was watching Ghost move to him. His hair was blonde, but more of a pink blonde, and his face was dusted with an assortment of freckles. His eyes were green, and so were the flowing sleeves of a dress that Alex could see as his arms rested on the car door. He wore a face mask across the bottom of his face, but amusement was across his eyes, as well as a soft affection.
Ghost’s face was one of awe, and he opened the door, while the omega reached his arms up. This must be Roach, Alex was realizing, as Ghost lifted the omega out of the car, bridal style. Alex had never seen Ghost this way, gently carrying the omega up to the house and seemingly being careful of the long green sleeves. Neither spoke, but Alex would swear they were moving as if they were conversing, and then Ghost was throwing his head back and laughing loud, and Alex wasn’t quite sure he understood.
Even still, his attention was immediately pulled back to the car as the door shut, slamming, and now another omega was leaning against it and watching him. This omega had a bit more of a severe expression on his face, one of distrust and almost dislike. He wore cut off shorts, a tee shirt that was far too big for him and in an alpha’s style, and these massive boots which Alex could imagine would hurt to get kicked by.
“I’m Rodolfo.” The omega said. He did not put his hand out, and neither did Alex. His eyes were brown, his hair was brown, and his skin was deep tan. He was… just as beautiful as Roach had been, but it was in a frightening way. Alex found himself knowing he would do anything the omega asked, even if at a great personal cost to himself. He didn’t like that, very much.
So, all Alex did was nod and reply, “I’m Alex.”
Then, Rodolfo pushed himself off the car and he pushed past Alex, a smile breaking across his face and Alex’s eyes followed him as he walked up to an alpha that Alex swore wasn’t there, before. The alpha was also dark skinned, with bright brown eyes, close to red, and black hair. His arms and neck were coated by tattoos, and he looked close to Alex’s age, as did Rodolfo. “Alejandro…” Rodolfo murmured, and the alpha’s arms wrapped around him.
Alex immediately took note of matching tattoos, some odd symbol on the back of Alejandro’s hand that was on the side of Rodolfo’s neck, right where a thumb would rest if one’s throat was being gripped. The imagery was odd, but Alex was starting to realize this family was… very odd.
“Mi hermoso… mi querido…” Alejandro murmured, tilting Rodolfo’s head up and kissing him deeply.
Alex felt uncomfortable watching them, turning away and back to Kate Laswell, before realizing she was just gone, no longer near the cadillac. However, when his mind decided that maybe he shouldn’t bother them and just leave, he was hearing a door on the opposite side of the car open, and then one final omega was getting out.
The minute Alex’s eyes landed on him, he felt as if the air was knocked from his lungs. Their eyes met, and a cold shiver ran down the back of Alex’s neck as the omega came around the car to get closer to him. His expression wasn’t smiling like Roach’s had been, but it wasn’t severe like Rodolfo’s, instead looking almost shy. His features were soft, mostly his eyes were, a soft warm brown. His skin was very dark, unbroken, and he had long braids that cascaded over his shoulders.
He wore a white blouse that hung off his shoulders, and a pale cream set of tailored pants. The skin on his shoulders was smooth and several images of Alex running his mouth over it, tasting everything the omega was made of, ran through his mind. He wanted to shake it off and ignore it, but it was harder and harder as the omega came close, his eyes flitting away from Alex’s face when he was in front of him. “It’s nice to meet you…” The omega’s voice was soft, shy, and Alex adored it. “I’m Kyle, but everyone calls me Gaz.”
Alex was quick to offer a hand, which Gaz took and shook, and Alex noted two white pairs of gloves on his hands. “I’m Alex. Everyone calls me that.” He offered the joke, finding himself desperate to impress the omega. And, in fact, pride filled his chest as the omega laughed and flushed softly.
He was so beautiful, his eyes were soft, and his lashes had dropped so he was looking at Alex through them, but his brown eyes were still visible through the dark, long lashes he had. The way those eyes looked at him did very odd things to Alex’s stomach and now he was caught between never wanting to leave and desperately running away.
Alex’s eyes dropped to the omega’s lips, and he so badly wanted them on his own. “It’s… It’s nice to meet you.” Alex said, a little lamely, but he had nothing else he could think to say, and he wanted to keep talking to Gaz.
“It’s nice to meet you, too.” Gaz finally smiled at him, and then his attention was stolen from Alex by his name being called.
Alex turned and saw John Price was standing on the front porch, a wrap around kind, and finally Alex’s eyes took in the features of the house. A gorgeous emerald green with black and gold accenting. Ivy traveled up some of the walls, and Alex realized the heat must have been getting to him because he swore some of the flowers on the ivy bloomed before his eyes.
“Ask Alex if he’d like to stay for dinner!” Price continued to call.
Alex winced, though he would definitely love to. But… he could be late, but his mom would be pissed if he ate dinner at another house when she was planning on him being home. He knew his dad likely wouldn’t eat with them, anyway. Alex wondered whose house he would be at, which omega.
So, he shook his head. “I can’t.” He answered, to Gaz, even though Gaz hadn’t asked him. “I should get home.”
Gaz then frowned, his expression turning disappointed. “You can’t?” Alex almost immediately took it back and said fuck it, stayed for dinner, anyway. He wanted to, he wanted to so bad. But… he really couldn’t.
“No, I’m sorry.” Alex winced, hoping his tone conveyed that enough. “Maybe another day?”
“I’d like that.” Gaz softened, immediately, and his smile came back, and Alex was starting to come up with ideas on how to keep it there. “I’ll hold you to it.”
“I expect nothing less.” Alex half grinned, and then he was having to leave. Once he got to the car, though, it occurred to him that he should be trying to get them to come to church, but… when he turned back around to call it out to them, he saw they were all gone.
Huh.
Must have already gone inside.
-
In the weeks that followed, Alex had not had a single night where he didn’t dream about Gaz. He woke up, often, with his name on his lips and his eyes fading from his memory. It was torture and euphoria in the worst ways and Alex found himself not wanting it to end and desperately wishing to be free at the same time.
He hadn’t been able to find opportunity to go and see the omega, either, or any of his family, either, though he wasn’t sure if that would make the dreams easier or worse.
The worst part was their sexual nature. Alex, again, didn’t know where he stood on God, but he did know that, regardless, they filled him with shame. He wished he could stop waking up covered in sweat, the taste of honeysuckle and peach tea on his tongue, rutting into the bed. No, he’d never indulged much in fantasies over omegas, maybe that was contributing to it.
Ghost had ribbed on him, a few times, for being a virgin, and he had no doubts that it was making the dreams worse. But, what was Alex supposed to do?
The town had started to talk, too. Not about Alex, thankfully, but about John Price and his family. Alex’s father waved it all to the side, told his church members not to indulge in gossip but… Alex had heard the words thrown around. Demons… Witches… Warlock.
It didn’t take long for a rumor to catch and spread like a wildfire, even the most ridiculous of them like these. But, there were rumors that John Price and Kate Laswell were powerful warlocks, that they were only moving back to their town, not that they were brand new inhabitants.
That Kyle, Rodolfo, and Roach all took part in demented sex rituals, that they sacrificed animals to their lord, Satan. That they sacrificed alphas.
As Alex had said, ridiculous. But… he couldn’t find himself completely denying the rumors, either. Obviously they were bullshit, witches, warlocks, and demons didn’t exist. At the very least, witches and warlocks didn’t. But… he couldn’t deny how odd they were… The weird things that had happened when he met them. Nothing too inconspicuous but… some of it was very odd.
But Alex didn’t believe in those things.
He didn’t.
Right?
He awoke, again, with the taste of honeysuckle and peach tea on his tongue, with Kyle’s eyes fading from his memory, the touch of his fingers ghosting over his back, to the suffocating heat of another night in the South in July. It wasn’t the type of heat he desperately wanted around his body, on his body.
This was slowly becoming unbearable, Alex could hardly take much more of it. He wasn’t sure what was worse, being tormented by the dreams or waking up from them. Did he want them to leave him alone or did he want to lose himself to them, sink into them and never return?
The sun was hardly rising, it was barely five in the morning, and it’d be another day that Alex had nothing to do. Even still, it was already hot, and Alex felt like he was drenched in his own sweat. Maybe he’d take a cool shower, and go back to bed. Fall back into the dreams.
His name floated through the air, it ghosted over his back, tracing the outlines of his shoulder blades, before sinking deep into him and images of Kyle flooded his mind, a mix of when they met and imagery from the dreams. It was an odd feeling, like he was being called, but where was he being called to?
Maybe a cold shower was the best idea.
However, as he forced himself up from his bed, his own name embraced him, again, tugging him to the window, where he noticed there was a fair breeze drifting through the brand new screen. They were privacy screens, close to black, meant to help keep the sun from their rooms. He could see the very thing just starting to peek over the horizon, though a crowd of clouds said they would soon be there to block it out.
Hurricane season.
Crouching, Alex looked out the window, unsurprised to find nothing was there. He had to have been imagining it, the dreams must have been affecting him in more ways than one. His name, again.
This time, Alex found the urge to grab his car keys and drive. He was confident, if he went out to his car and got in it, he’d know exactly where to drive, exactly where to go. But… would he go?
One word entered his mind… Please…
Who was Alex to deny such a request? He’d given into sillier. So, he yanked clothes on, a tee shirt and shorts, and he grabbed his keys, heading down the stairs before jumping back as he saw his father was sitting at the table, his hands folded together as if he was praying.
“Alex.” His father spoke and then his eyes were opening and they looked at Alex. “Where are you going?”
A million excuses ran through Alex’s head and a million excuses escaped his mind. “Just… for a drive.” He settled on, though he knew he could have made a much faster and better lie. “It’s… hot and I’m having trouble sleeping.”
His father clearly did not believe him. But, he wasn’t stopped and Alex rushed out to his car that much faster, finding some irrational need to make up for lost time. He was right that his mind new exactly where to go, taking each turn on pure instinct until he made it to John Price’s estate, and he was driving up the hill to the house.
Why was he here?
He didn’t know, but he didn’t plan to leave. Indeed, he stepped out of the car, seeing that the house was brightly lit in the still barely rising sun, but he didn’t find himself going up to the door. Instead, he found himself on a trail to the woods that sat on the property, following fireflies that danced in front of his eyes as he walked down the winding trail.
He wasn’t surprised to find Gaz was at the end of it, nor could he saw he was surprised at turning around and seeing there had been no such trail. What did surprise him was the small pond that Kyle sat at the edge of, surrounded by massive blooming flowers. The scent of honeysuckle and peaches flooded the air, surrounding him, caressing his skin.
“You answered my call.” Gaz said, though his back was to Alex. “You said you’d come back and see me.”
Alex could only feel guilt, as he had promised he would. “I’m… sorry. I’ve been busy.” A lie, he just hadn’t found a good excuse. “I meant to visit.” Did he?
Gaz slowly turned to look at Alex, and Alex moved forward, sinking to his knees beside the omega. “I’m here, now.” Alex said, softly, and he softened at the small smile that appeared on Gaz’s face.
The omega was beautiful, ethereally beautiful, frighteningly beautiful. Another blouse, just a blouse, this one loose and hanging even farther off his shoulders, and Alex let his eyes trace over every inch of skin, knowing with confidence that it would taste exactly how the omega smelled, of honeysuckle and peach.
Then the omega was leaning towards Gaz and Alex couldn’t find it in himself to deny himself the pleasure of leaning forward, placing his lips on Gaz’s collarbone, and finding he was right about the taste. Gaz’s hand reached up and placed itself on the back of Alex’s head, pulling him closer. Alex moved and pulled Gaz close, tasting over every bit of skin that he could reach.
The scent and taste flooded every scent he had, eliciting a growl from his chest before he could help it, and he found he didn’t care much from the soft mewl Gaz made before he was melting. The omega was perfect, everything Alex thought an omega ought to be and he wanted every sound he could get from the omega.
Too soon, however, Gaz was pushing at his head, and though he didn’t want to, he pulled away, trying not to make his disappointment evident. Gaz smiled, sweetly, at him and he cupped Alex’s face, and the touch made Alex’s stomach flip flop. “Come into the water with me…” Gaz murmured, with all of the sweet allure of a siren asking a sailor to drown himself.
Alex didn’t refuse, on his feet immediately. He watched the omega stand and undress himself before he stepped into the water, a beautiful soft blush appearing on his skin before Alex was quick to undress as well, following his siren into the water. He knew, if Gaz tried to drown him, he wouldn’t stop him.
Thankfully, the omega didn’t try to drown him, instead moving to Alex and kissing him, soft and sweet. Alex would admit that he didn’t really know what he was doing, but he didn’t care, his mouth finding the movements, anyway. He was gentle as he pushed Gaz back into a rock, noting that the water hardly reached midthigh for both of them, but it did oddly shimmer in the corner of his eyes.
It was pleasantly cool, too, and Alex found all of the uncomfortable heat dissipated in his body, and as he looked down when Gaz pulled away, everywhere the water touched on the omega’s body revealed iridescent swirling symbols traveling up his body. The omega met his eyes before Gaz was dropping down to sink into the water, impossibly submerging himself before returning.
When he resurfaced, his body was coated in the symbols, a language Alex couldn’t recognize but could read easily, making out protection and health over his skin. His hair shimmered, too, and his ears had morphed into pointed tips, his lips were purple, and his eyes were now a very warm brown, glowing honey in the still rising sun.
Alex couldn’t tell you how long this sunrise had lasted.
“You are… beautiful…” Alex murmured, reaching out to touch the omega, grasping him and pulling him close, again. He wanted the omega to be as close as possible, he wanted them inside each other.
Gaz didn’t respond, instead pressing himself against Alex, who reveled in the feeling of their skin pressed against each other’s. He again pressed Gaz back up against the rock from before, moving his mouth to his neck again, making sure to remain quiet in order to drink in every sound that was made. He taught himself with each noise, making note of the spots that got the loudest reactions. He traced certain words with his tongue, erasing chaste and pure.
The smell of slick hit him, bringing his arousal to the height of what it could be. Instinct took over and he pushed Gaz to turn over, making a pleased sound when the omega did as prompted, bracing himself on the rock. Alex’s fingers felt over Gaz’s body before they found his wet heat, sinking inside eagerly.
Gaz moaned, his head leaning back, and Alex had yet to see a painting that invoked such feeling that this sight did. His chest was warm, goosebumps traveled up his skin, and he got the very distinct feeling that he and Gaz were bound together in some divine way that neither got a choice in. But… he didn’t think he minded so much.
Alex found the motions that kept Gaz moaning, quickly, training his eyes on every single thing the omega did. Every whimper, every tremble, every gasp. He wanted to memorize it all, he wanted it to be there when he closed his eyes. He didn’t dare speak, he didn’t want to interrupt him.
Too soon, though, the omega grew impatient, his hips pushing back against Alex’s hand. “My alpha-” Kyle’s alpha, “please… I need you, I-” His voice broke ever so slightly, and guilt and pride mixed together in Alex’s chest. He’d done that to the omega.
Alex wouldn’t deny him, though, moving forward and kissing Gaz’s shoulder. It did finally occur to him that God might frown upon Alex, should he see Alex committing the same sin his father had preached against from the pulpit. He and Gaz were not married but… Alex also thought that if God witnessed the pure divinity in Kyle’s touch, he might look the other direction.
Could God, himself, resist this? Alex didn’t think he could.
He pumped his fingers a few more times before finally pulling them out, kissing Gaz’s shoulder to sooth him as he whimpered, his hips chasing Alex’s hand. “I’ve got you, baby.”
The omega just melted under Alex’s grasp, and he had a feeling it had to do with his words. Alex found himself smiling, mouthing over some previously made marks, carefully. It didn’t take much effort for Alex to push in, Gaz’s body gladly accepting him. He fit perfectly inside, nestling right up to Gaz’s back wall, and having to rest his forehead where he had just been mouthing over.
He would admit to jerking off a few times, but God, it didn’t compare to this. Gaz was so tight and hot around him, and he wrapped his arms around him, pulling him close to he could push deeper into him, panting softly. “We fit together…” Gaz acknowledged, his own voice breathy, the sensation of being full seemingly just as new. Alex wasn’t stupid, he knew what the words he’d erased meant.
Alex could only breathe an agreement, though he wholeheartedly did so. Carefully, not wanting to hurt his omega, he started to slide out, listening to Gaz whimper again, before he was quick to push back in, both moaning together. So, he set a pace. Slow out, quick in. It was torture, but he wanted to be careful, he didn’t want to hurt him.
When he did try to pull away slightly, worried he was gripping Gaz too tightly, Gaz made a distressed sound, yanking him close again, so Alex only held him tighter, wrapping his hands around the hips they had landed on, on opposite sides. He bit and marked over Gaz’s shoulders as he quickened his pace, too desperate so his self control was slipping.
But, Gaz didn’t seem to mind, if the growing volume of his moans said anything. The omega dropped forward onto his elbows, continuing to brace himself on the stone, and Alex couldn’t move with him, as the new angle allowed him even deeper, which he so desperately wished to be. Instead, he ran his hands down and over Kyle’s back, admiring the sight in front of him. He liked the way Gaz’s waist dipped in, evoking the same shape as a violin in Alex’s head.
Indeed, he liked playing Gaz’s body, seeing what noises came from which actions.
When his body started to tense and he could feel a building knot, it was with disappointment that he moved away. However, he was startled to be pushed down into the water, Kyle sinking back down onto his cock as Alex’s ass hit the bottom of the pond. “I need your knot, please!” Gaz cried, his expression almost akin to betrayal as he now faced Alex.
“I- I’m sorry, I didn’t think you’d want that.” Alex was quick to apologize, feeling awful for denying Gaz. “I’m sorry, baby. I’ll knot you, I won’t pull out.”
“Don’t you dare.” Gaz nodded, and his hands fell on Alex’s shoulders, before he was lifting up and slamming back down onto Alex’s cock.
Alex could only curse, wrapping his arms back around the omega’s middle as Gaz started to ride him. Gaz clearly had less patience and self restraint than Alex, because his pace denied nothing from either, causing both’s orgasms to build up quickly before Alex was biting into Gaz’s neck as his knot formed, and then Gaz was spasming around him, milking Alex for all he had.
Alex knew what Gaz wanted, when his hand moved to Alex’s head and pushed it deeper into the crook of his neck, and he gladly obliged, biting harder until his teeth broke the skin over where his mating spot was. Gaz didn’t cry out like Alex had seen other omegas do at mating ceremonies, instead he melted right into Alex, practically the same matter as the pond in Alex’s hands.
When Alex pulled away, Gaz was quick to match the mark on Alex’s neck, acting with such speed that it seemed almost that he was worried Alex would stop him. But, Alex wouldn’t dare, moving his head to oblige the omega, and trying not to dig his nails in at the pure euphoria that invaded his body from the bite.
He wasn’t quite sure what happened next, he just had a few memories of dragging him and Gaz out of the water and back onto dry land, and then they were in a bed formed from a massive flower. It was soft and sweet smelling, and somehow there was a blanket and pillows, but Alex wasn’t going to start questioning things now.
He nuzzled into the warmth of Gaz’s neck, grateful that he was still too swollen to separate from him. “What are you?” He finally asked, curious only because they were fully mated.
Gaz didn’t answer, though his hand reached up to stroke over Alex’s hair. “A witch but.. I’m not evil.”
“I don’t think you could be.”
“No, I’m… not. Price is a demon, he gave me his blood, so I am his adopted son. So is Roach. As such, we have gifts. Roach has the gift of the wind…”
“And you have plants, I’m guessing?” Alex finally moved his head to look up at Gaz, seeing a soft sheepish smile was on his face. He nodded, to confirm, and Alex “ahhed” before putting his face back in his neck. A cool breeze ran over his skin and he shivered, slightly.
Gaz continued to speak. “He can talk to people without opening his mouth. The… gifts took things from us. We were dying when he found us, he saved us. It took Roach’s voice, as the wind always does.”
“What… was taken from you?” Alex frowned, looking up at Gaz.
Gaz went silent, his expression forlorn. “I can’t have children. That’s what the earth takes.”
Alex frowned, looking in himself to see what he felt but… he didn’t care. He didn’t particularly want them, hell he could barely stand them, so… ultimately, it didn’t matter to him. “So… Roach called me, not you.”
“He did, but I asked him to.” Gaz confirmed, returning to stroking over Alex’s hair. “We’re… soulmates. I needed you to mate me before the next blue moon which is…”
“Tomorrow.” Alex realized, remembering some whispers from superstitious town members.
Gaz nodded. “I was desperate… I almost worried you wouldn’t come, but you did.”
“I knew it was you calling me.” Alex shrugged, his eyes meeting Gaz’s. “Anything you asked, I would have done. You could have drowned me, I wouldn’t have struggled.”
“I would never drown you.” Gaz frowned, immediately shaking his head. “I love you…”
Alex softened. “I love you, too…” He leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to Gaz’s lips. “Are… Ghost and Roach like us?” He asked, when he pulled away, and he softened at the nod. “I’d never seen Ghost like that, before.”
“He scares me.” Gaz admitted, before tugging Alex back to where he’d been resting, which Alex gladly obliged. “But… Roach adores him. They met last summer. Separating has been painful for them, I know, but both seem happy together.”
“He hasn’t talked to me much.” Alex answered. He hadn’t been that upset, half distracted by his dreams and also knowing that he was likely with Roach. He was happy for Ghost, he knew Ghost was lonely. “What about Rodolfo and… Alejandro?”
“They’re different.” Gaz shook his head. “Rudy was born mateless because his family promised their first omega child to Alejandro’s father, a very powerful incubus. However, before Rodolfo presented, he was killed by a group of demon hunters. A demon’s contract, however, is nearly impossible to break. According to it, Rodolfo then passed down to his son, Alejandro, who would have been the same age. Alejandro, himself, can’t break the ownership. But… I don’t think either mind. Alejandro has given Rodolfo blood and Rodolfo is very powerful with his many, many gifts.”
Alex frowned, unsure how he felt about that. But.. it wasn’t really his business. “I’d give you gifts, if I can.”
“You did…” Gaz murmured, taking Alex’s hand. “Since we mated before tomorrow, we’re connected in the most intimate ways. It’ll grow the longer we’re mated. That’s the most perfect gift you can give me.”
Alex found himself blushing dark and he nuzzled the fresh mating mark, watching the symbols start to fade on Gaz’s skin. It was disappointing, but… he had had a feeling they couldn’t stay forever. “What did the water do?”
“I feel safer in the pond… It protects us from harm… I… I was anxious.” Gaz looked away, which Alex didn’t like, gently making Gaz look at him, again. “I thought I’d be more confident in the pond.”
“Were you?” Alex asked, picking up one of Gaz’s braids and twisting it between his fingers.
Gaz nodded, and the sun finally had risen enough to shine on his skin, and Alex noted a shimmer was still there. “Will you stay with me, forever?”
“Longer than.” Alex promised, not even needing to think about it. He knew, soon, he’d have to worry about the repercussions. He knew the people would say things about the supposed witch managing to trick the Pastor’s son into mating him…
Fire. Screaming, begging.
Alex’s eyes flashed to Gaz’s, the imagery pervading his brain. He was met with a soft concern, but… Gaz’s eyes knew. He knew there was no other way this could end but with flames. Alex could only tense, his panic building, but Gaz was quick to soothe him, cradling Alex’s head back into his neck. “Shhh, my alpha… That won’t be for a very long while. We can’t avoid it, but we will survive it. I know it.”
Would they?
Alex couldn’t say he fully believed it, but he wasn’t a seer or prophet. He couldn’t say what would happen, he only knew it was inevitable, but he still yanked Gaz as close as possible. “I won’t let them burn you.”
“I won’t burn.” Gaz murmured, soothingly. “Price knows about it, he’s going to fix it. We’ll be okay, my love. We will survive.”
Alex pulled the omega as close as he physically could, feeling the sun’s heat slowly dissipate until he was uncovering his face to see the flower had closed around him. He didn’t know much about flowers, he didn’t know what kind it was but… it was suddenly his favorite. He wanted to remain locked inside of it forever, with Kyle. “Why… why did you guys move here?” He finally asked, wanting to distract himself.
“The pond.” Gaz frowned. “The pond and the house. We have a few around the world. One in Britain, one in a country named Urzikstan. We won’t be able to stay here forever. But… I had something, here, that I needed to come for.”
Alex knew Gaz was talking about him. “Why can’t we leave, then? The people won’t be able to burn you, then.”
“It’s not so simple. Traveling takes… a lot. We need to be here for at least a year.” Gaz murmured, his tone regretful.
Alex didn’t like that, but he didn’t voice it. Instead, he just moved on to another question. “What is Kate Laswell?”
“Another demon. Her wife is a witch, as well.” Gaz answered, smiling. “She teaches us.”
“Ah.” Alex murmured, moving to trace his finger over some of the still remaining words on Gaz’s stomach. Sleep tugged at the corners of his mind, and when Gaz snuggled in to get comfortable, Alex did the same. When he woke up, he’d start to worry about how he would deal with this. For now? He would sleep.
He would sleep, comfortable in Gaz’s arms, feeling happy where he belonged.

The Mechanics of Hope (Chapter 2)
[Chapter 1]
Kyle "Gaz" Garrick x Alex Keller
Single Parent Omega Gaz x Mechanic Alpha Alex Keller
Alex Keller is ready to find love. He's doing everything in his power to find it, too. He's dating, he's looking around, but... nothing seems to stick. Oh well, there's plenty of omegas to chase.
Until Kyle Garrick comes into the mechanic's shop he works at. The omega is gorgeous, he's funny, and Alex wants him so bad, falling hard and fast.
However, the omega doesn't really seem that interested.
Warnings: ABO, fem leaning terms for omegas
Tumblr media
Alex rolled his eyes, listening to Farah complain about how slow it was. “You could ask Price to order us lunch. You know he won’t order himself any unless we ask.” He pointed out.
Farah sighed, seeming to consider it and then she sighed, leaning against the counter before unzipping her jumpsuit and tying it around her waist. “I knew there were going to be slow days, but he could at least put a TV out here instead of watching soccer in his office.”
“Football, Farah.” Alex jokingly corrected, putting on his best impression of Price’s voice. “It’s football.”
“Whatever.” Farah rolled her eyes and finally plopped down into the chair she’d been standing in front of. “How did your date go?”
“Well, considering she hasn’t called or texted…” Alex winced and then shook his head. “It’s alright. There are other omegas out there.”
“There are.” Farah agreed, though she still looked sympathetic. “I’m sorry, Alex. I’m sure you’ll find someone.”
Alex shrugged, trying not to appear too broken up over it. He was upset, he’d really liked that omega, but… he was sure he’d find another. They hadn’t really clicked that much, anyway. They didn’t have too many things in common and it sounded like, from her brief bit of talking about herself, that she may end up having way too busy of a schedule for Alex. Alex wanted someone who he could frequently see, who he could dote on…
He shook it off and sighed. There would be other omegas, other opportunities. He was only 24, he had time.
“Alright, you two, I’m taking my lunch.” Price said, coming out of his office. “Watch the shop, though… there likely won’t be anyone for a while.”
Alex couldn’t help snorting softly, waving him off, and turning back to the counter. When Price had left, Farah groaned. “I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I think I’ll take inventory.”
Inventory was… one of the tasks they hated. Usually, Soap did it since lists and counting off things was like crack for him. Alex and Farah despised it, and since Soap was meant to be on vacation that week while he transitioned to taking classes, they had to do it.
“Yeah, good luck with that.” Alex laughed, before both were immediately perking up as someone came into the store.
An omega came in, looking a little frazzled. Not in a crazed way, more in a very stressed way. Alex did his best, he did his very best not to immediately look over the omega’s body, but, fuck, Alex was definitely an alpha.
Tall for an omega, slim, but all legs, even though he was dressed very conservative, a long sleeved shirt and fitted jeans that hugged him in very nice ways. Alex met Farah’s eyes, seeing they were very amused and she just shrugged before they both turned back to the omega as he finally made it fully up to the counter.
Alex put on his best charming grin, leaning against the counter so he could look at the omega properly, his eyes catching on the omega’s own eyes, which were a deep brown, but held a sort of… fuck, Alex didn’t have a word for it, but they drew him in and he imagined himself drowning in them.
“I…I uh…” His attention was lost faster than Alex considered fair as the omega immediately turned to Farah and disappointment took over Alex’s head. Damn. “Is Price in?”
“He is!” Farah answered, giving Alex a sympathetic smile before nodding to the omega. “He’s in his office. Do you need to speak to him? He is on lunch right now. Maybe we-”
“Oh, I can wait, then.” The omega answered, almost appearing to shrink in on himself. “Um, my name is Kyle-”
“Oh, don’t give that shit, Gaz.” Price was out of his office a moment later and Alex tilted his head at seeing that his chair, in his office, was backed up almost to wall, like Price had flung it out in an attempt to get up.
So, Alex immediately knew who this omega had to be. Kyle Garrick, which was the omega that Price had taken over a sort of fatherly role for, if Laswell was correct. Apparently, Price had quite the soft spot for this omega.
Price continued, elbowing his way in front of Alex. “You don’t have to wait. I forgot the damn sack at home, anyway, so I was watching football.” Right, that was one of the reasons they’d considered trying to convince Price to buy lunch.
Deciding to try to rile Price up, and hopefully make Kyle laugh, Alex turned to Price and crossed his arms. “Don’t you mean soccer, sir? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you watch American Football.” Maybe rugby, but not their football.
He couldn’t help grinning as Price slowly turned to glare at him. “I mean football, Keller. The right football.” Price muttered and Alex laughed, softly, since he’d succeeded in his task. However, the omega didn’t seem to find the joke funny, instead Kyle appeared to be working something out in his head.
Price rolled his eyes. “Just bring in his car, would you? It’s the shitty Kia.”
That got a laugh and Alex had to admit, he felt a little jaded. Of course the old man succeeded where Alex failed. “Hey!” Kyle exclaimed, crossing his arms and continuing to laugh. “It’s my shitty Kia and it’s been pretty reliable. When… it’s not breaking down, that is.” His voice dropped to a mumble at the last sentence. “It’s making that noise again.”
Alex’s thoughts ended up being echoed by Price’s words. “Probably the belt, again.” Price sighed, shaking his head. “That bloody thing goes through more belts than I do around Christmas.”
Alex and Farah shared a confused look. What does that even mean? Alex mouthed to Farah, who just put her hands up.
“Farah, can you-”
Farah cut Price off. “On it!” She gave a thumbs up and then turned to Gaz. “Can I have your keys, please?” Her eyes were soft and Alex had to resist not to groan, because if he had to compete with Price and Farah for Kyle’s attention, he might lose his fucking mind.
“Thanks.” Kyle said as he gave her the keys. “I have some errands to run, so I’ll be back in a few hours.” He then turned to Price, again. “Please let me pay this time.”
Price just laughed and Alex almost did as well. “For a slipped belt?” It was hardly more than a few minutes of effort, though he was sure Price would have them do a full inspection on it. Oh well, something to do. For Farah.
Poor Alex would be stuck, continuing to be bored, and watching the counter. Maybe he’d just tell the old man to suck it and play solitaire on his phone or something. Hell, maybe he’d even watch “football”, but American Football.
He suddenly became aware that Price was talking to him. And that he’d been accidentally staring at Kyle while he’d zoned out. Fuck. “Well, don’t fucking dawdle, Keller! There’s shit to do!”
Alex didn’t get a chance to respond before Price was huffing and going back into his office. Rolling his eyes, he moved fully back behind the counter and shook his head. “There really isn’t.” He told Kyle, trying to find an excuse to keep talking to him. “Hence why he took his lunch. Well…” He seized another opportunity to try to make Kyle laugh again. “Actually, he took it because Nik threatened to leave his ass if he kept overworking himself.”
It was the truth, he and Farah had watched the argument that morning, since Price and Nik had stayed at Laswell’s house for the night.
Alex grinned, victoriously, as Kyle finally laughed at his joke, trying not to puff out his chest with pride.
“I don’t think we’ve met.” Kyle started, moving forward a bit. “I’m Kyle, like I said earlier, but… pretty much everyone calls me Gaz.”
Alex noted that and switched to thinking of him as Gaz, since usually people didn’t mention things like that unless they had a preference. However… he was curious. “Why? I uh, sort of fail to see how that fits with Kyle.” He joked.
Gaz laughed, again, and Alex felt like he was on a roll. He’d have to put it on a plaque. Made a Gorgeous Omega Laugh Twice. Alex needed to get a handle on himself. “Price started to call me by it. I’m not really sure why, actually.”
“Ah, well, the old man does funny things.” Alex shrugged. He noticed Gaz’s eyes flicker to the door, so he smiled. “I’ll let you get to your errands.” And he’d return to charming the omega when he returned to pick up his car. Yes. Brilliant Plan.
Already, he had several of his best tactics lined up in his head, trying to remember all of his best witty one liners. God, Ghost would give him so much shit if he knew how much of a dork Alex really was.
“Thanks, I’ll let you… well, be bored I guess. Dawdle.” Gaz chuckled and gestured.
Alex couldn’t help laughing and then, he may have imagined it, he probably imagined it, but he could have sworn he saw the omega blush a little before waving and leaving, going to one of the trucks. Price must have given him his keys.
Well, the brief amount of excitement and entertainment left Alex feeling almost even more bored than he had before as he just sat in the little chair they kept behind the counter, shaking his head and getting out his phone.
Shockingly, even when Price came out to throw something away, he didn’t scold Alex for being on his phone, and instead just chatted to Alex about dinner the night before. Diane had made lasagna, which had been fantastic, so they were talking about the best way to ask her to make it again.
Farah came back in a moment later, shaking her head. “Price, that car is held together by duct tape and hope. Of which I have little.”
“You’re preaching to the choir.” Price sighed. “But, Kyle won’t let me replace it. Insists he doesn’t want me to spend that much money. I’d just buy one but I don’t know if he’d accept it.”
“I’m worried about him driving it!” Farah pushed up her sleeves, having pulled her jumpsuit fully back on. “I don’t even think we could fully fix it. It needs to be junked.”
“I’d love to!” Price gestured. “Would you like to convince him to let me replace it? He can’t afford to buy himself a new one besides… I think it has sentimental value to him.” He sighed and ran a hand down his face.
Alex shared another look with Farah. “How?”
“That’s not my story to tell.” Price shrugged and then sighed. “Just… fix the belt, fix anything else that you can to keep it running, I’ll throw in some-”
“Nah, don’t worry about that.” Farah waved him off. “I’m bored, anyway, it’ll give me something to do.”
“Great.” Alex huffed, since not only would he be stuck in the shop, bored, but Farah wouldn’t even be there so he had someone to talk to. He planted his ass back in the chair, trying very hard not to pout like a child.
Price chuckled and pat his shoulder before frowning as his phone rang and then shaking his head. “I have to go. Laswell needs help with something.”
Both just waved him off and he grabbed some keys and left, taking his second truck. Farah came over, sighing. “I’m worried it will fall apart while he’s driving it.”
“I mean, the truck is old, but I’m sure it’ll be fine. Nik would force him to replace it if it was a safety hazard.” Alex waved her off, about to turn back to his phone before jumping as she snapped her fingers.
“No, Alex! That omega’s Kia! It’s falling apart!” Farah huffed and then crossed her arms before softening. “I understand he can’t afford a new car and I understand pride, but it’s a safety issue.”
“I don’t know. Maybe he’d let him if Price told him it was a safety issue?” Alex offered, a little embarrassed he didn’t pick up on her meaning.
“Maybe.” Farah mumbled and then moved to sit on the counter, sighing. “Everything needs to be replaced.”
Alex winced and then turned back to his phone. “We’re strangers, I doubt he’d listen to us.” God, Alex would love not to be a stranger, though. He was a bit of a romantic. “What did you think of him?”
Farah raised an eyebrow before chuckling softly. “He’s pretty.” She crossed her arms, looking amused.
“Pretty??” Alex laughed in indignance. “He was gorgeous. All legs and his eyes-” He stopped when she was laughing, rolling his eyes. “I saw how you interacted with him.”
“Alex, Price will have your knot if you even think about trying anything with that omega.” Farah chuckled. “He’ll hang you by it.”
“Nice visual.” Alex muttered, unable to help wincing as he thought about that. He dropped his shoulders, realizing Farah was right. “Yeah, you’re right. Still, I-”
“I know. You want to find a mate. You’ve never been one to take life slow.” Farah softened and then shrugged. “Who knows. Maybe you’ll end up charming that omega so well that Price just has to let you keep seeing him.”
“Maybe…” Alex relaxed, thinking about Kyle, again. “He was gorgeous… I would really like to get to know him better.” He really would. He already had several ideas in mind of exactly what he’d like to do with Kyle.
Farah smiled, sympathetic. “I’m rooting for you, Alex.” She said and then nudged him. “You could ask Laswell about him? I’m sure she’d know something.”
“Maybe.” Alex did perk up a little, since that was a more than decent idea. Laswell would definitely tell him, too.
Farah sighed and finally stood again. “Well, I already fixed the belt, but I think I could find a few small things to fix. One of the tires needs to be replaced, so I might do that. Have fun.”
“Yeah, sure.” Alex rolled his eyes.
As it was, she only ended up being a little bit longer before coming back and tossing Alex the keys. “I’m going to go on break and pick us up something to eat. What would you like?”
“I don’t know, just bring me back whatever you get for yourself.” Alex answered, catching the keys and putting them in the drawer.
“Will do.” Farah nodded and grabbed her own keys, leaving.
None of this was fixing Alex’s boredom.
Of course, only a few moments later, Gaz finally came back and Alex practically scrambled to sit up and put his phone away, grinning as the omega came in. “Where’s Price?” Gaz asked, appearing to frown.
Alex got out Gaz’s keys and held them out, while he answered. “Laswell called. Had an issue, I think, so he rushed off, took his other keys.”
He accepted Price’s keys as Gaz gave them and watched the omega frown even deeper. “Oh. Thanks.”
Alex hesitated before deciding to seize his opportunity. “Hey, um… do you want to get coffee? Or… tea?” He joked, blushing as he saw Gaz blush and then laugh.
“I..” Gaz started before his expression dropped and he looked disappointed. “I can’t… I don’t date mechanics.”
Disappointment filled Alex’s chest, but he tried not to show it, brushing it off and deciding to keep joking. “Oh. Well, if that’s the case, I’ll quit right now.” He half grinned. “Actually, I’m studying criminology. You date lawyers?” Look, Alex had to try at least once more.
“Too stuffy.” Gaz answered, his tone teasing, and he leaned against the counter. God, the omega was alluring, the way he looked up at Alex through his lashes, the way he put his hand on the counter while leaning his hip against it. “Too uptight.”
Alex couldn’t help himself as he leaned forward, dropping his voice, and moving his eyes to trace over Gaz’s lips. “I can be anything but uptight.” He promised, maybe pressing his luck a little.
Gaz let out a soft, disappointed sigh. “Sorry, I don’t date.” He smiled, apologetically, and Alex frowned. “You’re cute, though. Tell Farah thanks for fixing my car.”
Fuck. “That’s alright.” He attempted to keep smiling and just nodded, trying not to take the rejection so harshly. Well, Price wouldn’t have to hang him by his knot, it seemed, because Gaz was just not interested. “Have a great day, Gaz.”
“You too.” Gaz gave a little wave and then he was heading off, right as Farah was coming in, having used the side door.
“I uh… heard everything.” Farah winced, coming over. “Sorry, Alex.”
“It’s alright.” Alex mumbled and sat back down. “There are other omegas.”
“There are.” Farah agreed as she set a bag down. “Come on. Dispel your disappointment with food. I got sandwiches from that place you like.”
Alex shrugged and sat up, half grinning. “Hell yeah.”

The Mechanics of Hope (Chapter 3)
[Chapter 1] [Chapter 2] [AO3]
Kyle "Gaz" Garrick x Alex Keller
Single Parent Omega Gaz x Mechanic Alpha Alex Keller
Gaz thinks about things more when he's out grocery shopping with his daughter. His best friend, Soap, ends up trying to encourage him to try things out with Alex, but he's still apprehensive.
Maybe a little more so when Alex lies to get closer to Gaz.
Warnings: ABO, fem leaning terms for omegas
Tumblr media
Gaz chuckled as he watched Gen tug a box of cookies off the nearby shelf, watching her turn over the box and inspect the back. She could read, she’d learned early, but Gaz really doubted she could read the word “cholesterol”, “enriched”, or “riboflavin.”
He knew she was just mimicking what she’d seen Gaz do, though the only reason he really inspected the backs of boxes was so he could make sure there was no red dye 40. Roach had told him it would help Gen to concentrate better to just avoid it where he could.
Hard to, when her favorite candy was full of it. But, if he avoided it everywhere else, he hoped it would even out.
Speaking of, she was currently chewing some gum that she’d gotten from her halloween party the week before. He never had to fight her to portion her candy out, since she hated getting belly aches from eating too much. He imagined it probably overstimulated her.
“Can I see those?” He asked and she held up the box. He inspected them, seeing that they were the ones with candy coated chocolate. Not M&Ms, since this store sold almost exclusively offbrand. “Not these, honey, the candy hurts your throat, remember?”
She made a face and immediately put her hand up to the box, shaking her head in a way that she did which meant “I do not want that.” He chuckled and put them back, knowing she’d probably seen the bright candy and was interested.
Gaz knew she’d likely want some kind of snack, so he looked over the shelves and found a fairly cheap bag of animal crackers, instead. “Here. You love these.”
She confirmed this by squealing as he held out the bag and practically snatching them out of his hands, hugging the bag and settling back into the cart. He knew it wasn’t the safest to have her in there, but it was better to have her in the cart where random strangers didn’t decide they just had to touch her hair or her and then she was having a melt down.
God, what was with people?? Specifically elderly people. They always seemed to feel some entitlement to interacting with children and despite how many times Gaz would try to say “she’s autistic, she hates being touched”, it never meant anything to them.
He brushed off the issue before he started to get genuinely irritated and just took a breath, going back to looking at bread crumbs, since he often used them to cook. They weren’t expensive, so he could.
“Uncle Soap!” Gaz perked up, hearing Genevieve exclaim, and he immediately turned to where he saw Soap was rushing down the aisle to Gen, Roach following behind. Gen squealed as Soap picked her up and hugged her, hugging back.
Gaz shook his head, amused, and watched Soap bounce her so she was on his hip, grinning. “Hello, Dandelion.” He said, booping her nose. “I haven’t seen you in so many days! Have you been good?”
“Perfect.” Gaz answered, shaking his head. “An angel.”
“Ah, of course she is. Good lass.” Soap pat her as she laid her head on his shoulder. “And what about Mama? He behaving?”
“Oh, can it.” Gaz laughed, crossing his arms. “I always behave.”
“Mhm.” Soap laughed and Roach shook his head.
‘He says that, as if he behaves.’ Roach signed and then waved to Genevieve. A moment later, he was handing her his keys, since he had a few fidgets on them that she liked to play with.
Gaz watched her attention immediately become lost to the fidgets and he shook his head, leaning against the cart and sighing. “Why are you guys here? I assume to shop like I am, but…”
“Oh, Roach just got another tattoo and he was very brave about it-” Soap joked before being cut off by Roach hitting his arm. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Actually, we’re here because I was an idiot and forgot to buy some things for dinner. Though… they’re all out of what I need, so I think we were considering just going out.”
“Oh, I see.” Gaz nodded and smiled. “Well, it’s Monday, which is grocery day, and I think Genevieve and I are just going to have some frozen pizza tonight.”
“Oh?” Soap bounced Genevieve a bit to get her attention, chuckling. “Are you having fun, Dandelion?”
Genevieve giggled and nodded. Soap shook his head and then passed Genevieve to Roach, who oomphed as he took her, immediately moving to sit on the floor. He had chronic fatigue like Gaz so it was just better that he did that.
Gaz frowned as Soap pulled him off to the side, now worried. “Hey, I didn’t want to ask in front of Gen, because I didn’t want her to get excited if you said no, but… since Roach and I are going out to dinner, do you want to join us? It’s not going to be anything fancy, just that diner we eat at.” Soap said.
Gaz relaxed, immediately, and then softened. God, his friends were amazing, because it was so hard when he knew they couldn’t go somewhere and the adult asked in front of Genevieve. “I don’t know if I can afford it…”
“Don’t worry about that.” Soap shook his head. “I’ll pay. Think of it as me finally paying you back for that work you did a while back.”
Gaz considered before shrugging. “Alright, I don’t see why not.” He relaxed, since it’d been a while since he and Genevieve had eaten out for dinner. He knew she’d be very excited and, hey, he didn’t have to cook. Even if it would be a frozen pizza, that was less effort and he could leave that for another day.
“Awesome.” Soap grinned and then he went back to Roach and Genevieve with Gaz, immediately crouching down to steal Genevieve back from Roach. God, when she was younger, she was hardly out of someone’s arms. Gaz had worried she’d unlearn how to walk. “Guess what, my bright little dandelion, you and your mom are going to eat dinner with us! Isn’t that awesome??”
“Ahhhhhh!” Gen mimicked the excited fake yell thing that Roach sometimes did as a joke, which they all called a roar, since she would open her mouth wide and hold her hand in front of it, yell and shake her head.
All three adults laughed and Gaz shook his head. “After I finish grocery shopping and take it home. Did you guys take the bus again?”
“Yeah.” Despite both Soap and Roach having their own cars, they were incredibly nature conscious, so they often just randomly took the bus to conserve the environment.
“Well, then you guys can ride with us.” Gaz offered, not offended at the hesitation in both of their eyes. “I just had it fixed up again. By Price. Or… Farah, I think.”
Both visibly relaxed and then nodded. “So you met Farah?” Soap asked, following Gaz around as he started to walk again. “Did you meet Alex?”
Gaz went dark red. “I did…” He said, trying to remain nonchalant, but he could see Soap latch onto it, immediately. “Soap…” He warned.
Soap groaned. “Am I really that predictable? Come on, he’s cute, you should go for it! Roach, mo chridhe, tell him he should go for it!”
Roach looked up from where he’d been showing Gen how to use one of the fidgets, frowning. ‘ Go for what?’ When Genevieve tried to mimic his signs, he helped her form them.
Gaz rolled his eyes. “Soap is trying to convince me that I should go after Alex. His coworker. But,” Gaz grabbed a jar of pasta sauce off a shelf, shaking his head, “alphas don’t go for single moms. Specifically single teen moms. Not that I blame him…”
“Gaz…” Soap whined. “It doesn’t have to be long term. Sleep with him.”
“He’s close with Laswell and it sounds like he’s going to be around for a while.” Gaz shook his head, turning back to Soap and Roach. “A hookup will just make things awkward. Nor do I really want one… I’ve never been one to be able to just have casual sex.”
“Then pursue him romantically! Alex is sweet, and he has those good ol’ southern values. He won’t care about Genevieve. Does he know about her?” Soap tilted his head.
Gaz shook his head. “No. And he won’t find out, either. I… I really don’t want two strange alphas knowing about my daughter. I don’t even know if I can trust him.”
Soap groaned, but he didn’t fight Gaz on it. Gaz hadn’t even let either of the alphas pursuing Rodolfo meet Gen, yet, though they didn’t seem particularly interested. Rodolfo was not interested in kids, apparently, and neither were the two alphas. Though, Rodolfo had been nothing but sweet to Genevieve, treating her like a niece.
“I think it’d be good for you.” Soap finally said. “You’re lonely- no, you are, don’t argue with me.” Soap responded to the glare Gaz shot at him. “You are lonely. You haven’t…” Soap trailed off and glanced at Gen, and Gaz watched, amusedly, as Soap appeared to try to think of an alternative to saying sex. “You haven’t… haven’t… Kissed someone in a while.”
“Well, unlike some of us, I don’t need kisses .” Gaz shot back, rolling his eyes.
“ Kissing is fun, though! Very fun.” Soap grinned. “You may not need it but I bet you’d feel a lot better if you had it frequently.”
Gaz couldn’t really deny that it might be nice to have it back in his life but… no. He didn’t want a hookup, he didn’t want a friends with benefits thing, and he wasn’t going to delude himself into thinking he had any sort of romantic chance with anyone. “Soap, I’m not going for it. Drop it.”
Soap pouted but sighed. “Alright, Gaz…” He went back to bouncing Gen and Gaz shook his head, going back over the list to make sure he had everything before making a frustrated sound as he realized he had forgotten Genevieve’s drink supplements.
She didn’t drink water, so he had to get her these drink mixes that were super hydrating, while he worked on getting her to drink regular water. “Here, can you stay here for a moment while I run and grab something?” Gaz asked.
“‘Course.” Soap nodded, going back to bouncing Genevieve. “Real quick, I just realized, why isn’t she in school?”
“Oh. Professional Development day or whatever.” Gaz answered, shrugging. He knew Soap was only curious, not judging. He could say “didn’t feel like taking her” and Soap would immediately fire back with “hell yeah, fuck the establishment.” And then spend ten minutes teaching Genevieve how to make some new hand symbol that meant “anarchy”.
“Ah.” Soap nodded and then shrugged. “I bet she was excited.”
“She very much was. I didn’t tell her so it was a surprise.” Gaz pet Gen’s hair before sighing. “Alright, I’ll be right back. If she gets antsy, that tablet is in her bag.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Soap nodded, checking her bag. “Go, go get your thing.”
Gaz relaxed and then finally turned and headed off, quickly going to the aisle that he knew would have her drink supplements and going to where they were. Shit what flavor were the ones she preferred?? Was he a bad mom for not remembering??
“The uh… cherry ones are best.”
Gaz startled and looked up, flushing as he saw Alex was standing beside him, looking sheepish. “Oh. Alex. Hey.”
“Sorry, I get these pretty frequently.” Alex smiled and then reached over, taking the cherry drink supplements off the shelf.
Gaz hesitated before grabbing a box of cherry as well. “Well uh… thanks.” He answered, unable to help but feel kind of awkward. “I… Um… How are you?” He asked, mostly to be polite.
“I’ve been pretty great.” Alex smiled, looking almost surprised. “It’s picked back up at the shop, so I’ve not been too bored. What about you?”
“Eh.” Gaz answered. “The usual, I guess.” No complaints, Gen was in perfect health, he was about to get dinner with his friends… “How’s Price? I haven’t talked to him in a few days.”
“Oh, he’s fine. Complaining about his back, but… when is he not complaining about his back?” Alex laughed and Gaz did as well, since that was fair. “Oh, I forgot to say, but Laswell asked me to invite you to dinner.”
Gaz’s blood ran cold. He had forgotten about the whole Alex being close to Laswell thing and he’d forgotten that Laswell telling Alex about Genevieve had even been a risk! Fuck, he’d have to ask her not to, if she hadn’t already. “I don’t know… my schedule is fairly busy.”
“She said you might say that.” Alex nodded and then shrugged. “She just told me to ask.”
“Sorry.” Gaz winced and then shook his head. “I’ll see.”
Alex nodded and then an awkward silence fell between them. Gaz backed up and then gestured. “I um…” He started, about to say he should go back.
“Wait-” Alex said and then immediately seemed to wince. “I… I…” He looked very hesitant, his eyes glancing around, before he sighed. “Farah was hoping you could bring your car by this Friday? She mentioned that your accelerator needed to be rotated?”
“Rotated?” Gaz blinked. He didn’t know much about cars, but something about that sounded odd. “Can… can you do that? Well, I guess, now that I think about it, I don’t really know much about accelerators.”
“Oh yeah, it’s real important.” Alex nodded. “Really important. Huh, did Price never tell you you needed to have that done before? I mean, it would make sense, the old man is forgetful.”
Gaz furrowed his brows before shrugging. If Alex was saying it was important, he’d believe him. “Okay, I’ll bring it in.”
“Awesome.” Alex grinned and then hesitated. “I was wondering… what do you do for work? Price mentioned you have a job but he never said what it was.”
“Oh. Well, I have a few. I’m a waitress at this restaurant, it’s a bit high end, though I also occasionally bartend.” Gaz flushed and then shrugged. He opened his mouth to ask Alex, but then went dark red as he realized that he already knew. “I…” He chuckled and then shook his head. “I was about to ask what you do for work, as well… God, I’m awful at small talk.”
Alex laughed, softly, “I would have answered without hesitation. Probably would have never even thought about it. I guess we’re both bad.”
“I guess…” Gaz softened and then backed up again. “Sorry, I… I really do need to head off.”
“No, right.” Alex nodded and appeared to blush for a moment before gesturing. “Farah’s waiting for me in the pharmacy, anyway. She’s having us try these new scent suppressants, so… It was good seeing you. I’ll see you on Friday?”
“Of course.” Gaz smiled and then gave a small wave before heading off to find the others again.
When he found them, he flushed as he dropped the box into the cart. “Sorry it took so long, I uh…” He hesitated, unsure he should tell them, since Soap might get excited. “I… Ran into Alex, actually.”
“Oh??” Soap immediately perked up, looking excited. “Did you go for it?”
“No!” Gaz glared at him and then sighed, shaking his head. “No. It was kind of awkward, actually. We just… had small talk and then he told me Farah needed me to bring the car in on Friday, mentioned um… rotating the accelerator?? Which, I wasn’t aware needed to be done. Why didn’t you tell me about that??” He whacked Soap’s shoulder.
“Hey!” Soap winced and shifted Gen so he could rub at it. “Because that’s not a thing! Rotating your accelerator would just break the damn thing. Did he really say that?”
Gaz frowned. “I… I’m fairly certain. No, I’m almost positive that’s what he said. Why would he lie?”
“So he can see you!” Soap grinned, looking even more excited. Roach chuckled and rolled his eyes, giving Gaz a sympathetic look. “That’s so sweet! He lied so he could see you.”
“Exactly, Soap, he lied.” Gaz sighed and took Gen back, gesturing for Soap to push the cart. Poor Gen looked to be getting very sleepy, her head immediately falling on Gaz’s shoulder. “Maybe a nap before we get dinner?”
“We’ll order something, okay?” Soap smiled and booped Gen’s nose, chuckling again as she gave a soft little whine and waved him off. “She can eat when she wakes up.”
“Perfect.” Gaz relaxed and bounced her before they finally went to check out. As they checked out, Gaz thought back to Alex. Maybe Soap thought it was sweet that Alex had lied to see Gaz, but Alex had lied to see Gaz. He’d just said something he knew Gaz couldn’t question in order for Gaz to see him.
Okay, maybe he was being a bit over suspicious, but it still had him suspicious. What else would Alex lie about? Was Gaz making excuses to keep himself from liking Alex? Maybe.
Gaz internally groaned, frustrated with himself.

Chapter 4 - That Ends Well - Regency
Gaz and Mal discussed their next course of action. Obviously, they couldn’t stay or their kidnappers would likely find them. So, they needed to leave as soon as possible.
Tumblr media
--
“How will we get horses?” Mal sighed, folding herself delicately. “I do not think I have nearly enough gold to consider renting one.”
Gaz sighed, shaking his head. “You’re right.” He considered. “Even with our story… not many are going to be willing to just give two horses to two random omegas.”
“Our captors had a carriage.” Mal pointed out. “So walking may be an option, but it would be risky.”
Gaz made a frustrated sound. He worried about the risk of trying to get a letter to his father and it potentially being intercepted. Ravens were usually a safe option, but how would he even get his hands on a raven? “This is frustrating.”
“I don’t think being kidnapped and then escaping is anything other than frustrating.” Mal smiled. “I don’t think anyone finds being kidnapped… fun.”
Gaz decided Mal was right and laid back in the bed, groaning. “It could be less frustrating, though. Why were we even kidnapped?”
“There’s a group of rebels who don’t want your marriage to King Phillip.” Mal offered. “They do not think we should be a full part of the Empire, nor do they want Drodora connected to that kingdom. Laupin, that is.”
“Great. Another people who think they have a say in my own marriage.” Gaz closed his eyes. “So they kidnapped me to… stop my marriage? Why not kill me?”
“Prince Roach might be offered, next.” Malika considered. “No, Prince Roach is betrothed to Lord Riley of the Red Kingdom… I doubt many would think that would happen. I don’t know why. But, I can’t think of anyone else besides someone who wished to hold you for ransom.”
“I think I’d rather just be being pursued for ransom. They may give up.” Gaz muttered. “Regardless of how we’re leaving, we’re going to need supplies. Food, money… weapons to protect ourselves.”
Mal nodded and she furrowed her brows before getting out her little bag of gold. “Getting the room took a heavy amount of my gold. I don’t have too much left. But, I should have enough for food.”
Gaz sighed, softly. “Food is most important. Transportation is second. We can figure out everything else. Well, regardless, let us go and gather supplies.”
“Yes, lets.”
They went down to the market, gathering foods that would last a decent amount of time. They just needed a few days worth, since they couldn’t be too far from the castle. The problem was, they would need to take an indirect route, since they would need to pass through as many villages as possible, to keep from being rekidnapped.
It took all day and near the evening was when they found how they were to travel back to the King’s village. Another young omega apparently also needed to travel and he had a small cart. All three had agreed that traveling together was much safer than traveling alone and so he had offered they share her cart, for free since they were providing safer travel for him.
His name was Daniel and he was fairly sweet. Gaz and Mal got along with him just fine and they made an effort to leave before sunset, though most of their trip would end up being at night, regardless.
Daniel let Mal sleep in the back of the cart, first, with the caveat that he could sleep second. Gaz didn’t mind, he could keep himself awake fairly well. He used the time to get to know Daniel, finding out he was actually from Artemea, but had moved to Drodora for a fiance.
When the fiance died, he was sort of stranded there. Eventually, he gained land and now he works off of it. However, he was traveling right now to pick up some rare seeds from a trader in the King’s village.
Gaz thought his story was kind of sad, but gladly listened, nodding a little. “You sound like you enjoy living in Drodora.”
“I miss my home but I don’t think I’d go back.” Daniel shrugged.
Gaz smiled, softly, and nodded.
“What about you?” Daniel asked, tilting his head.
Gaz shrugged. “Drodora is my home. It’s the only home I’ve ever known. I can’t… imagine being anywhere else.” He admitted. “But, I’ve been betrothed to an alpha from Laupin.”
“Oh. I’m sorry.” Daniel frowned.
“Don’t be. The marriage benefits my family greatly.” Gaz smiled. “I am happy to do it for my family.”
Daniel tilted his head. “Do you love them?”
“I don’t need love in my marriage.” Gaz shrugged. “Not when my marriage benefits my family.” And his kingdom.
“I wouldn’t be able to live my life with an alpha I did not love.” Daniel shook his head. “My life would be dull. I can’t do that.”
Gaz frowned and shook his head. “I don’t really get to choose love.”
“Why not?”
“Because-” Well, Gaz couldn’t exactly tell the truth. “It would… disappoint my father.”
“Surely he would want you to be happy, no?”
“He would, but this is more important.” Gaz winced. He wished he could explain. He went quiet and looked down at his hands, fidgeting.
“You seem to have a lot on your mind.” Daniel frowned. “I am willing to listen.”
Gaz hesitated before sighing. “I am in love. With another alpha. But… we cannot be together.”
“Why not??” Daniel blinked, frowning more. “You love him.”
“My father wouldn’t approve.” Gaz looked down again.
“Everything you do hinges on your father.”
“I wish it didn’t have to. But, it’s important.” Gaz bit his lip.
“Well… tell me about the alpha you’re in love with.”
Gaz hesitated, again, but decided to. “His name is Alex and he’s… wonderful. He’s kind and he’s funny and he’s… handsome. I…” His heart ached. He really was going to miss him. “I’ll never see him, again, once I’m married. Which is for the best, I want to be loyal to my husband. If he comes with me… I know I won’t be.”
“Because you love him.”
“Yes.” Gaz nodded, looking down at his hands. “Sometimes, I wish I couldn’t. But I do. I don’t think I will ever stop loving him. Even after this marriage.”
“Doesn’t quite seem fair to the other alpha, then.” Daniel’s tone was gentle, however his words still struck Gaz. “Having to be attached to an omega who could never truly love him. Always having to be the one who was settled for.”
“It really is different.” Gaz tried to explain, but he knew he couldn’t. In a way, Daniel was right. But… in a way, that was natural for Royalty. Marriage for love was… rare. So rare it was considered a fluke for them. A happy coincidence. Gaz had known this would happen, he’d never deluded himself into thinking he had any sort of future with Alex. It just… wouldn’t happen. He knew that.
“I wish I could understand how.” Daniel nodded. “But… I respect that it is different. Even if I don’t get it.”
“Thank you.” Gaz nodded and then leaned back. Things were silent the rest of that sleeping shift and then Mal and Daniel switched so Daniel could sleep. Even there, things continued to be silent as Gaz got tired and had to keep himself awake.
When they finally made it to the King’s village, in the morning, they thanked Daniel and then found an inn, using what money they had left to pay for a few nights. Then, Gaz happily slept while Mal assessed their supplies.
The next few days were spent with little talk between the two of them. On the second day, Gaz had discovered that the King was out and so it wasn’t smart to try to return to the castle, anyway. He had no doubt his father was looking for him, which he felt awful for. He could only imagine his father’s worry and terror.
His own worry had increased when he found out Roach had already left for the Red Kingdom, his wedding being moved up so he could be safe with King Alejandro. Gaz was glad his brother was safe but… heartbroken that this meant he’d likely not see him for a long while.
Admittedly, he was afraid to return to the castle. Their kidnappers had found a way to kidnap them there and without his father there… He was afraid they’d find a way to do it, again.
He didn’t think he could go through this, again, and he wasn’t entirely sure he’d be able to escape if they did take him, again.
In fact, the third night, he woke up from a nightmare of shadow figures grabbing him, refusing to let him go. He ended up just watching Mal sleep, surprised she could sleep so peacefully, under these conditions. But, he was glad she was. Someone needed to be rested.
Then, he saw the soft glow under her covers, and he understood. She slept so peacefully because she had a blade of light, clutched desperately to her chest. He smiled, sadly, and moved to her bed, feeling a little safer if they were together.
And then he went back to sleep.
-
He woke up in the morning and they decided that safe or not, they should try to go back to the castle. It was the best idea, all points considering.
Neither wanted to risk staying in town, when they didn’t know who had kidnapped them or what they wanted and if they were still looking for them.
So, it was best to go to the castle right now.
Getting into the castle would be no problem, Gaz had a tattoo on the inside of his arm when he was adopted that would prove he was Prince Kyle. He was sure his father would be notified as soon as he arrived, as well, so he wasn’t too worried about that.
However, he was almost paranoid his kidnappers would be there, ready to snatch them up. This was unrealistic, he knew that. But… he was still scared.
Mal tried to reassure him as they got ready to go, but… Gaz was still afraid. However, when it was time to leave, he took a deep breath. “It’s going to be okay.” Mal reassured him. “We’re going to go up and tell them what happened and we’ll be fine. I promise.”
Kyle nodded. “I know. We’ll alert the guard and they’ll keep us safe… I just… I’m scared. What if they come back?”
Malika shook her head. “They won’t. Or… no one will let them. I won’t let them.”
Kyle relaxed and nodded. “Let’s go.” He murmured before tugging her outside.
However, before they could even go anywhere, Kyle saw Alex was rushing over to greet them. “Prince Kyle! Thank the gods, you’re alright! Farah and I have been looking all over for you!”
Kyle immediately relaxed, feeling so much safer with Alex there. “Alex…” he melted, hugging him.
Alex hugged back, tightly. Kyle could tell he had also been scared. “Where’s Farah??” Kyle asked as he pulled away.
“She’s in town, searching for you two.” Alex confirmed.
Malika frowned. “How did you know to search for us here?”
Alex paused. “We um…” he seemed at a loss.
Malika suddenly grabbed Kyle’s arm, yanking him back. “If we had been kidnapped, wouldn’t we have been much farther than the King’s Village?”
“You were spotted in a nearby village, so we tracked you to here.” Alex frowned. “Malika, I don’t know-“
“And why did you choose that village to search?” Malika accused.
Kyle frowned. “Mal, what are you saying?”
“I thought, when we were being chased, that the voice was familiar and I’m starting to understand…” Malika kept her eyes on Alex. “It was Alex’s voice. That’s why I couldn’t find any information, because I took everything I found to the source!”
Kyle stopped and then he just felt betrayed. “Alex?” He looked at Alex, who looked at a loss. “Is it true?”
“N-No!” Alex immediately said, though he sounded frantic. “No, no, we were searching through the towns and we just happened to find that one.”
“What a huge coincidence.” Malika glared at him. “So how do you explain every piece of evidence going missing?”
Alex shook his head. “We were doing our due diligence-“
“Alex!” They heard Farah call in the distance, and Malika didn’t even appear to think, just grabbing Kyle’s wrist and yanking him with her. He followed her, unable to consider anything else.
Betrayal was coursing through him, sharp and painful. “How could they??” He asked at a pause.
“I don’t know. We need to get back to the castle.” Malika shook her head, looking around before continuing to run. They took off through the village, ducking around buildings. However, they found that the gate to enter the castle was closed, which meant the guards on duty would not let them through and Kyle didn’t have time to convince them who he was.
So, Malika grabbed him and took off running down another street, grasping his arm so hard it almost hurt.
Kyle didn’t stop her, though, just doing his best to keep up. Then, they were skidding to a stop at seeing Farah was at the end of the street. And the street was empty, save for Farah. Besides, who would the people believe? The head of the king’s guard? Or two supposed nobodies?
“Stop running. We’re not going to hurt you.” Farah’s tone was clearly trying to soothe, her hands up. “This can all be explained…”
“I have no doubt!” Kyle glared at her. “I’m just not sure I’m going to like the explanation!”
“Kyle, Malika, please…” Farah pleaded, stepping forward carefully. Kyle and Malika both backed up, but Kyle gasped as he backed up into someone.
His mouth was covered and he was lifted, so he kicked and struggled.
Malika went to help, but Farah rushed forward, grabbing her before she could. “Calm down!” Alex’s voice was behind Kyle, attached to who had grabbed him. “Please!”
Kyle did not calm down, instead he thrashed harder. He bit into Alex’s hand, but he wasn’t released, instead, he was just held tighter.
He started to tear up from panic, which was beyond mortifying. He couldn’t cry, not while he was being kidnapped again. Even if it was Alex, who he’d never thought would do something like this. Didn’t Alex love him? Why was he doing this?
His scent flooded the area, he could smell it, and it was clearly distressed.
Malika was struggling just as hard against Farah and finally, she was dropped. Kyle watched her throw her hand out, hitting Farah with a purple cloud. And then she gestured at Alex and then purple was surrounding them.
Kyle started to lose consciousness, his head feeling heavy, and the last thing he felt before passing out was teeth sinking into his neck, right where a mating mark would go.

That Ends Well - Chapter 5 - Regency AU
Kyle woke up in the castle. He knew it was the castle, because he recognized his room, rather quickly. "
I told your father that, in the struggle, Alex got his with something and it made him mate you… that they’d just been looking for us and the kidnappers got away. Roach is now in the Red Kingdom, married to Lord Riley."
Prince Kyle was entirely unsure how to feel.

Kyle woke up in the castle. He knew it was the castle, because he recognized his room, rather quickly. He jerked awake, holding his neck, and then looked around, relaxing when he saw Malika was in her chair.
“Prince Kyle! You’re awake!” She immediately said and got up, moving over to sit on the bed. “Thank the gods!”
Kyle softened. “What happened?”
“I… I’m sorry. I lied to your father, I didn’t know what else to do. I told them… I told them that Alex was trying to save us, not kidnap us. Farah explained everything to me. She told me that they’d kidnapped us because your brother instructed them to. That they were just trying to save you from an unhappy marriage and- I… I believe her. So, I told your father that, in the struggle, Alex got his with something and it made him mate you… that they’d just been looking for us and the kidnappers got away. Roach is now in the Red Kingdom, married to Lord Riley.”
Prince Kyle was not sure how to feel. Maybe… maybe it was the mating bond that made his emotions so tumultuous and… maybe it was the fact that he’d been in love with Alex for so long. Maybe it was the want to finally get to just… let go and do something stupid and get away with it. “Can I see Alex?”
“Yes.” Malika stood and left. While she was gone, Kyle sat up and then got up, holding his head which spun as he stood.
She came back barely a moment later and Alex was close behind. She bowed and left them alone, closing the door behind her.
Alex just kind of stood there, silent. He had his hands clasped behind his back and Kyle could tell he was ashamed by the way he avoided Kyle’s eye.
Kyle looked away. “You took away my agency. I was unhappy marrying King Graves, but it was still my choice. If I had truly been upset, my father would have stopped the marriage. It was… my choice to go and you took that away from me.”
Alex flinched when Kyle looked at him. “Prince Kyle, I’m sorry-“
“I forgive you.” Kyle nodded. “Maybe I’m stupid to. But I do. I forgive you because… I have been so absolutely and desperately in love with you for nearly 8 years and I- I may be so unbelievably angry at you, but I’m not stupid enough to try to risk this when a chance at happiness is right in my grasp.”
Alex stared at him, shock evident in his features. He didn’t speak and so Kyle moved forward. “Let me finish the mating bite.” Kyle asked.
Alex softened. “Of course.” He relaxed and so Kyle leaned forward, placing his lips on his neck and kissing over it until he found a spot that had Alex grabbing onto him and his scent washing over him.
Kyle melted from the scent and then sank his teeth into the spot, breaking the skin easily. Alex growled, softly, but then he was relaxing and his grip was softening.
Kyle pulled away and wiped his mouth, relaxing. “Has my father already spoken to you?”
“Your father has not spoken a word to me. I fear he plans to execute me.” Alex winced and touched his neck.
Kyle sighed. “I will speak to him. There is much to discuss. You have a lot to make up for.” He teased.
Alex winced. “I will do my best Prince-“
“No. Just Kyle.” Kyle shook his head. “You’re my mate. Besides, you will be Heir, now, by Drodorian law.”
Alex blinked. “Oh no-“
Kyle just pat him and moved around him, deciding to go speak to his father, now. He left poor Alex to think about the consequences of his actions before starting down the hallway.
He knew Alex would be a good king. He was a kind and fair alpha and maybe it might make his father have to put more care into his own health to give himself a chance to  teach Alex how to run an entire kingdom. Besides, Kyle had watched his father long enough to be able to.
He found his father in the War Room, which… seemed a little dramatic, all points considering, until he realized that King Alejandro, Lord Riley, and a mysterious third man, who he could only assume was King Phillip of Laupin was in there, and they seemed to be in heated discussion.
“It is not about mating, it is about guaranteed loyalty.” King Phillip was stating. “Without a marriage, there is no guarantee of loyalty, I have no reason to believe that the scales will be tipped, equally, in my favor.”
“The Empire will honor you, as you honor it!” King Alejandro retorted, almost growling. “I give you my word.”
“The word of humanity is not reliable.” King Phillip shook his head. “Things change, circumstances change. Drodo and Ozul both see marriage as a sacred bond. As does Aelius. To forsake the vow that comes with it will bring consequences to those who break it. Laupin is small, but we are strong, and we have only lasted this long by refusing to bow to empty promises. I have no reason to believe you will honor us as we honor you. So without a sacred bind, I will not be throwing my kingdom to dragons who bare their teeth at the slightest defiance.”
“Phillip, you must understand that it’s not a slight defiance.” Kyle’s father spoke up before Alejandro could, sitting in a chair at the table. “King Alejandro- nay, Emperor Alejandro needs your alliance. It is more than another jewel back in the Silver Empire, you are the key to Sylmea and Artrera. We need you just as much as you need us.”
King Phillip was silent, for a moment. “I have sympathy for your son.” He straightened and rolled his shoulders. “I have sympathy for you, King Alejandro, and the situation that you find yourself in. But, I cannot place my people in the hands of you without trust. Without a sacred bind, I will not willingly return to the empire.”
Alejandro opened his mouth to speak and King Phillip shook his head. “You have your duties. And I have mine. And I do not think you are in any position to take us by force.”
Kyle found himself shivering at the sudden turn in King Phillip’s voice. “So I would think twice before trying.”
Alejandro narrowed his eyes. “Is that a threat?”
“I don’t make threats, Emperor, I make guarantees. And, I guarantee that you will not find much success in trying to overtake Laupin. You have two months before I will no longer consider any offer.” King Phillip turned, seeming almost surprised at Kyle’s presence. But, he only bowed and so Kyle curtsied in response, before he went to leave.
“I will close all trade around you. I will cut you off.” Alejandro spoke up. “I will weaken you.”
“I welcome it.” King Phillip turned back around and Kyle saw him smile. “We will survive. As I said, we are small but we are strong. Two months.” Then, he turned on his heel and left, the tail of his over coat billowing behind him like.. well, shadows. It lent to a rather intimidating picture, if Kyle was honest.
To think, that could have been his husband.
He shook off the thought and turned back to the table, going to his father. Kyle bowed his head, slightly, to King Alejandro and Lord Riley, who nodded and bowed their heads respectively, and then he turned to his father, who smiled at him. “I am glad to see you are awake and walking around.”
“I am, as well. I have had… quite the unfortunate few days.”
“Few weeks.” His father corrected. “You were unconscious for nearly a week.”
“I was?” Kyle frowned. He felt as if he’d slept no longer than a few hours. As if he’d had barely a brief nap. He looked at his father. “No matter. I am awake now, that is all that matters.”
“I think quite a bit more matters.” Lord Riley spoke up. “You’re mated.”
“Yes…” Kyle nodded and sighed. “I am… sorry.” He did feel guilt. Because he was deciding to accept this, it was going to have deep ramifications for the empire and the fact that it was his fault… It left a heavy weight on his shoulders.
King Alejandro shook his head. “Do not fault yourself for matters beyond your control. You had no choice, neither did Sir Alex. Fate… plays cruel games that we are left to deal with the ramifications of.”
Kyle had to agree. Even still, he felt apologetic. “Alex will swear full loyalty to the Red Kingdom, even without the union of my brother and Lord Riley. I must ask… how is Lady Riley?”
“He is fine.” Lord Riley spoke up. “Lady Mactavish has sent me many letters assuring me of his health and happiness.”
Kyle relaxed, glad. He would deal with his feelings about Roach arranging his kidnapping, later. For now… he had other things to worry about. More pressing things. “My lords, may I please speak to my father, alone?”
King Alejandro nodded. “I wish to ride home immediately.”
Lord Riley nodded. “I will see you off. I will stay and make sure things are alright here and continue discussions on this matter. I worry King Graves will fancy himself slighted.”
“So do I.” King Alejandro said as they started to walk out. “Regardless, I miss my wife.”
Lord Riley just laughed.
Kyle shook his head, slightly amused, and sat in a chair by his father, listening to them leave. “I know you are likely unhappy with Alex-”
“Rest assured, Kyle, I do not fault him.” His father shook his head. Price finally sat up from the half slumped position he’d been in, sighing. “I am more concerned for my eldest son. Are you alright?”
Kyle nodded to assure his father that he was. “I promise I am. I feel guilt… for the rift I may have caused in the empire. But… Alex will make a good husband and he will make a fine King.”
Price snorted. “While I do not doubt you- Well, I suppose I feel a bit more freedom in my distrust of the knight. King Phillip… I had no choice, what had to be done had to be done. But… Well, I suppose I have no choice here, as well, but still. You are my eldest son and you are very dear to me.”
Kyle softened and smiled. “I understand, father. But Alex is a good alpha.”
“Of which I do not doubt, either. Lord Kate has many pleasant things to say about him, though the gods know she is biased.”
Sometimes, Kyle forgot that Laswell had taken in both Farah and Alex when they were young and orphaned. Orphans seemed to be running around, these days. They seemed to be high in number. He smiled. “I do not fear for my future with him. And I have no doubt you will prepare him to be a great King.”
“I will die trying, at least.” Price agreed. “Lord Kate insists you two are to have a fine wedding. It will take place in the spring, as your wedding to King Phillip would have been.”
Kyle liked the idea of that. “And you promise you do not begrudge Alex?”
“No more than any other father would.” His father laughed. “As I’ve stated. You are very dear to me. But… I understand that he had no fault, either.”
Kyle knew that was very much not true. Alex was… mostly at fault, here, but… Necessary crimes. One of those was lying to his father and saying that Alex was equally a victim. “Good.” Kyle relaxed. “I’m glad.”
“However, you will be in charge of helping him learn how to behave at court. He may be a knight, but the battlefield and court are…”
“Very different.” Kyle winced. Granted, he’d never seen a battlefield and likely never would. But… he’d been at court. It was… a harsh game to play. It would be harsher for Alex. Kyle was a noble’s child, the gossip mostly spared him but… Alex was a knight who was becoming King through an accident. Most would see through it and most would guess, correctly, that Alex had cheated his way there.
On top of that, he wasn’t a blood Heir, he was a marriage heir. A marriage heir that had broken an agreement that was supposed to be beneficial to their kingdom. This was… worrying. But, Kyle was confident Alex could handle it. Alex was strong and he was quick. If anyone could handle this, it was him.
Kyle still took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “I will teach him. So will Malika.”
“Speaking of.” Price nodded and then sighed. “Well, since Alex is becoming King, I have chosen a betrothal for your lady.”
Ice flooded Kyle’s veins. A betrothal?? “But, Father, she’s my Lady in Waiting, I need her-”
“Calm. She will not leave you, I swear.” Price shook his head. “Sir Farah is raising in title to Lord Farah. Or… I am confident she will at Alex’s request. She is head of my entire Kingsguard, she should have been a Lord in the first place. Therefore, I think it most fitting that Malika should be betrothed to Lord Farah.”
Kyle relaxed and then he felt himself smiling wide. “I agree, Father. I think Farah and Malika will find the agreement… most tolerable.”
“Most tolerable.” Price snorted. “Having your Lady married to the head of my Kingsguard will be the best option. She will remain here and… there will be closer ties between the two.” He pat Kyle’s knee before standing. “Now, if you don’t mind, I am hungry and I wish to have lunch. Do you wish to join me?”
Kyle smiled and stood, taking his father’s arm. “I very much would.”
“Good.” Price nodded before guiding him out of the room.

That Ends Well - Chapter 6
Alex frowned as Kyle made him stand in front of a table. “What are we doing, again?”
Kyle rounded the table, making sure everything had been set up, perfectly. “You chose to mate me and you chose to bring me back. As a result, you will be King one day. Being King comes with a lot of rules.” He straightened a crooked fork, tsking. “Rather silly rules. My father is teaching you the art of war. I am teaching you how to handle yourself at court. Well, Malika and I are. But, Malika is busy as of this moment.”

Alex winced. “Right. I mean… how hard can it be?”
Kyle just laughed. “As King, you don’t need to know nearly as much as I do, but you will need to know how to behave. Who do you bow your head to?”
“Everyone, it’s a sign of respect.” Alex shrugged.
Kyle nodded. “You are correct. You right now would bow your head to everyone. My father does not. He bows to one alpha and one omega. King Alejandro and Queen Rodolfo. Why?”
Alex furrowed his brows. “Alejandro is King of the Empire and Rodolfo is his Queen?”
“Exactly. When you are King, they are the only who are higher than you.” Kyle sighed. “When I am Queen, I will bow my head to three people. Who?”
Alex snorted and looked almost cocky. “Well, I would assume I am one of them.”
“You would assume, correctly. King Alejandro and Queen Rodolfo are the other two.” Kyle nodded. “Where do I sit at this table?”
Alex paused and he seemed to almost stare at the rectangular table. It wasn’t a banquet table, it had seats on either side, and Kyle had purposely made sure all of the chairs were the exact same. “Beside me?”
“Wrong.” Kyle shook his head, continuing to walk around the table and straighten things. “Try again.”
Alex looked at the table again and furrowed his brows. He was silent for a moment before sighing. “Fine. You got me.”
Kyle smiled. “I sit across the table from you. You sit on one end and I sit on the other. As Aelius and Artemea did, once.”
“We are the kingdom of Drodora, why do they matter to our traditions?” Alex furrowed his brows.
“Drodo was Aelius’s brother. His younger brother to be exact.” Kyle informed him, standing behind where he would sit. “He looked up to him, and as such, we follow their traditions.”
Alex hesitated. “Alright. I suppose that makes sense.”
“And, regardless, that’s just the reason we give.” Kyle shrugged. “This is how we do things. It doesn’t make much sense to me, either, but… tradition is important.”
“And if I would rather my wife sit by me?” Alex frowned. He seemed almost uncomfortable. “Surely I have that right. I would be King, after all.”
Kyle smiled. “You can make that decision. But then… who sits on the ends of the table? Whoever it is will have to be important enough to everyone in this room for them to agree with you or.. Things will start to fall apart.”
Alex shook his head. “I will be King. Why do their opinions matter?”
“You are only as strong as your closest supporters.” Kyle sighed. “If no one likes what you are doing, you can be overthrown. And… that puts everyone around you in danger. It puts me, it puts our children, it puts anyone who does support you, it puts everyone you’re close to in danger.”
“I’m starting to deeply regret my decisions.” Alex mumbled. “I should have just continued to Artemea.”
“Yeah, maybe. But, you didn’t, and it’s too late now.” Kyle chuckled. “So, you sit on one end of the table and I will sit on the other.”
Alex sighed. “Right. Is there a specific side I sit on?”
“Yes. The chair farthest from the door.” Kyle nodded. “In case we are attacked, I will be grabbed, first.”
Alex tensed. “No.”
“No?” Kyle frowned and looked at Alex. “I’m sorry?”
“No.” Alex shook his head. “I will follow every other silly social rule but that one. I will not have my wife’s life put at risk before my own and if anyone has an issue with that, they can air it out with my blade.”
Kyle watched him speak. Well, he was breaking a social rule but… He was so commanding when he said it that it may have had Kyle both slightly excited and slightly more optimistic for Alex’s future as King. Focus.
Alex raised an eyebrow. “Do you have a problem with that?”
Kyle blushed. “Hmm… if I do, do I have to speak to your blade? Or can I just tell you?”
Alex seemed almost surprised and then he blushed dark red. “You can just speak to me.”
Kyle laughed, softly. “I will. But, no. If my King wishes me to sit on the other side, then I will.” He curtsied, slightly, before straightening and watching Alex start to come around the table.
“I think I could get used to that aspect. Say that again…” Alex said as he got closer to Kyle, touching his chin and making him look up when he was close enough.
Kyle found himself blushing dark as he was made to look into his mate’s eyes and he smiled. “I will do as my King wishes.”
Alex almost appeared to purr and then his scent was washing over Kyle, who closed his eyes and melted. A moment later, Alex was pressing his lips to his and pulling him close. A shiver moved down Kyle’s spine and he reached up, grasping Alex’s cloak, which hung off his right shoulder.
As a knight, it would have hung off his left, but royalty wore theirs off their right. It was just for show, in combat it would hang over both of his shoulders or slightly off so he could swing a blade.
“You’ll be a beautiful queen.” Alex murmured when he pulled away. “I dare to say that you will likely be the more competent ruler.”
Kyle softened. “You will make a fine King. I believe that you will learn. Besides, my father is not in any position to die, nor do I believe he will abdicate.” He murmured. “You will have many years, yet, to learn.”
Alex shrugged. “Maybe.” He ran his thumb over Kyle’s lips. “You are beautiful, my Prince.”
Kyle’s skin blushed dark, again, and he smiled. “Thank you.” He lifted his chin as Alex leaned down and kissed his neck, baring the skin for him. What an odd change of events for them… going from this never even being possible to it being their only option.
They both jumped as the doors opened, though they weren’t doing anything wrong. Even so, they found themselves separating and Kyle felt almost ashamed, anyway. It was only Malika, and she was smiling brightly. “Prince Kyle! Heir Alex,” Malika bowed to Alex, before turning to Kyle.
“Uh… Maybe don’t do that.” Alex winced. “This is all quite the change.”
“No. You kidnapped us.” Malika simply replied. “Heir Alex.”
Alex winced. “My apologies.”
Kyle shook his head and smiled, amused. “Why did you come, Malika?”
Malika clasped her hands together. “I just came from speaking with the King! He has decided Lord Farah, no longer Sir Farah, and I will be betrothed! We will be married shortly after you two. Since Alex expressed a want for Farah to be his right hand.”
Alex nodded. “I did.”
Kyle smiled. “That’s wonderful, Malika!” He answered, even though he’d already known about that.
Malika nodded. “It is! It is so completely wonderful…” She melted and then sighed, clearly happy. “Everything seems to be going our way.”
Kyle nodded, though he was starting to become worried this couldn’t last.
-
Kyle frowned as Lord Riley stated he needed to leave. “Is my brother okay?”
Lord Riley paused, about to mount his horse. “I don’t know, Prince Kyle. King Alejandro and I will return once this is sorted and.. You have my word that I will tell you.”
Kyle nodded. “Thank you, Lord Riley.” He bowed his head, slightly. “Then we will continue discussions as what to do for King Phillip?”
Lord Riley seemed almost amused. “You will make a fine Queen, Prince Kyle. You can balance so many priorities. Yes, we will.”
“Please make sure my brother is alright…” Kyle asked. “He is dearest to me. Dearer than you could know.”
“I can get an idea. I will make sure he is alright.” Lord Riley bowed his head and then finally mounted his horse. “I will, no doubt, return in a week.”
“Send me letter if he is ill or injured.” Kyle immediately commanded. “Do not hesitate.”
“I will not.” Lord Riley shook his head. He then took off, racing out of the courtyard.
Kyle backed up as he left, his heart consumed by worry. Lord Riley had been fast in informing him about the letter. Apparently Roach was attacked… Oh, he hoped his brother was alright.
He shook his head and turned around, returning inside the castle. Barely five seconds after he’d stepped inside, was Malika rushing over to him. “Prince Kyle! I have- I have to tell you something.”
“Oh, Malika, you always have something to tell me.” Kyle laughed as she took his arm and started to guide him to the library. “What is it, this time?”
“It’s much more serious…” Malika murmured, her voice low. “It’s about King Alejandro and Queen Rodolfo!” She whispered the last part, though it was still loud.
Kyle frowned. Oh no… “What could you have heard?”
Malika seemed to hesitate as they got to the library and then she pulled Kyle in, closing the door. “I was speaking with some of the maids and they mentioned that King Alejandro has… been leaving frequently. Going to a nearby town. There, he meets up with a young omega. He is the son of the Lord there, I believe…”
Kyle immediately understood what he was implying. “No… You don’t think?”
“They spend days at a time together.” Malika nodded. “He’s really secretive, won’t tell anyone the omega’s name…”
Kyle felt his heart sink for Queen Rodolfo. “No, no, King Alejandro adores his wife, he wouldn’t-”
“There are rumors of him having other lovers.” Malika murmured. “Many. I do not wish to believe it is true and there is no evidence of it being any sort of affair, but… Some of the maids have told the ladies at court. If they know, soon the Red Court will know as well…”
“And so will the Artemean… the whole bloody continent will know of King Alejandro’s infidelity… oh Queen Rodolfo will be humiliated!” Kyle gasped. “And he’s pregnant… Oh…”
Malika nodded. “I didn’t know what to do, and that’s why I informed you, first. Should you seek counsel from your father?”
Kyle didn’t want to believe King Alejandro was unfaithful. But… he had no evidence to the contrary. King Alejandro had a reputation and, as his father stated, reputations are earned for a reason. But… there was no evidence that he was being unfaithful.
Well… He didn’t want to use it, but this was a perfect opportunity for Alex to… make a decision. He sighed, closing his eyes. “My father is biased. He is close to King Alejandro… He will not look at the situation as he should. No, we will seek counsel from Alex.”
“Alex??” Malika looked surprised as Kyle opened his eyes. “Why Alex??”
Kyle shrugged. “Alex is unbiased. He has no loyalty to King Alejandro or Queen Rodolfo. He is… also an alpha, perhaps he will be able to explain King Alejandro’s behaviors from a new angle that we, as omegas, cannot understand?”
Malika nodded. “You’re right…” She seemed to relax and then sighed. “Lets go talk to him.”
Kyle nodded and left with her.
They found Alex in the courtyard with Farah. Both were in their Knight’s clothes, sparring, and they appeared to be in conversation as they approached. “Everything I say has to be spoken with authority.” Alex seemed to be complaining. “ I don’t know isn’t a proper answer, apparently.”
Kyle chuckled to himself, shaking his head. Farah snorted as she swung at him. “You don’t know a lot of things, though.”
Alex was quick to knock her blade away, using the momentum to swing around and slash at her neck, though she twisted her body away from it. They almost appeared to be dancing. “Thank you, Farah, you make me feel so intelligent.”
“I do not understand what you want from me, Heir Alex.” Farah laughed, stepping back at another slash. “You were the one who just started to complain with no warning.”
Kyle smiled when they were close enough, clearing his throat to get their attention. Both alphas immediately stopped and Alex’s face broke into a smile. “Kyle…” He came over and his arm moved around Kyle’s waist.
Well, Kyle would give him another thing. Alex was incredibly affectionate. Since Kyle had forgiven him, if they were within proximity, it was barely minutes before Alex had some part of his body touching Kyle’s. Kyle tilted his head up to allow Alex to kiss his temple, closing his eyes. “I think green suits you.”
Kyle knew he was referring to the new green hair that Kyle had used for his new braids. Since he’d been kidnapped, his father was quick to dote on him. Kyle barely had to ask for anything. Hair, dresses, all kinds of sweet foods.
If it wasn’t his father, it was Alex. He worried he’d become quite spoiled. Too content. “My mate… If I may… Malika and I seek counsel on an issue. If you are up to the task, that is.” He turned so he could look up at Alex.
Alex frowned before he sighed, heavily. “I… suppose I need the practice. Can I ask what it is before I answer?”
“It is a heavy subject. We… have discovered possible infidelity against someone we are close to.” Malika spoke up. “We don’t know what to do about it.”
“You believe Lord Riley is unfaithful to Roach??” Farah quickly asked, moving closer to them.
“Oh, no!” Malika shook her head. “No, no! King Alejandro!”
“That’s a grave accusation.” Alex murmured. “If you were to accuse him, you could be accused of treason.”
Kyle shook his head. “I would not dare to accuse him. I simply… worry for Queen Rodolfo. He’s very sweet and he does not deserve to be humiliated in such a manner. I wonder… if I should tell him.”
Alex seemed to consider before turning, gesturing for them all to follow, though his hand moved to the small of Kyle’s back. “Let me hear the evidence.”
“He goes to a nearby town and meets with the son of a lord there. They disappear for days and he refuses to even speak of the omega to anyone.” Malika spoke, standing close to Farah.
Alex winced. “Well, it’s not absolute but… that sounds like infidelity.”
“Do you think it is?” Kyle frowned.
“How would I know?? I’ve never been unfaithful!” Alex shook his head. “Alphas don’t come with some code to infidelity etched into our minds.”
Farah shook her head. “It does sound like infidelity to me, but I also would not know. I find it abhorrent and if I had my way, it would be completely illegal.”
“Hmm, I may have discovered one benefit to being King.” Alex chuckled. “Maybe that might be on my agenda.”
“Most of my father’s advisors would find themselves imprisoned.” Kyle sighed. “But… I would like that. I understand that we’re royalty and many of us do not get much choice in the matter but… from what I understand… King Alejandro did get a choice. He chose to marry Rodolfo. Besides, he must know how humiliated Rodolfo will be, after this…”
All were silent for several moments before Farah shook her head. “It’s awful.” Malika murmured. “Poor Queen Rodolfo… Do you think we should tell him?”
Alex seemed to consider. “I think I would wish to know. If Kyle was unfaithful to me. I would hope someone would tell me.”
Kyle agreed that he would wish to know, as well. Even if it was suspected. Even if Alejandro wasn’t cheating, others would eventually begin to suspect, as well, and… poor Queen Rodolfo would be left to be completely humiliated over and over again. He could handle it if he knew…
“I will find some way to tell him. I wish I could tell him in person, but… I understand why that is not possible.” Kyle murmured. “I just… feel so badly for Queen Rodolfo…”
The other three seemed to agree. “I am sure we can find some way for him to come to Drodora.” Farah spoke up. “With everything… Maybe you wish to see your brother! I have no doubt Queen Rodolfo may want to come as well!”
Kyle felt himself perk up, slightly. Farah was correct, that was brilliant! He would just write a letter requesting Queen Rodolfo, Lady Mactavish, and his brother to come to Drodora! Surely they would not turn him down? He’d just been kidnapped! “I will send the letter as soon as I can! King Alejandro and Lord Riley will come back, soon, surely they will bring them with them!”
Farah nodded. “I believe they will.”
Kyle relaxed and nodded.
Then he could tell Queen Rodolfo.

Kyle was disheartened when he received Soap’s letter informing him that he wouldn’t be able to come. But, he understood. Queen Rodolfo was pregnant. He did send a letter back saying that he understood, giving Queen Rodolfo his well wishes and then he rested, again.
Oh well, he was feeling much better, anyway. It appeared that consistently telling himself he was just being dramatic had an astounding effect on the rejection sickness. He was more resting to make sure he didn’t throw himself back into it.
However, he did tell a maid to get Roach for him, relaxing when Roach came into the room. “Soap won’t be coming… Queen Rodolfo is with child.” Kyle sat up.
Roach came over, frowning. ‘ Are you alright with this?’
“Yes, I will be alright. I understand why he needed to stay.” Kyle nodded and smiled. He really did. He was disappointed but he’d rather Soap stay with Rodolfo.
Roach, however, did not look understanding, looking to the side and glaring at the ground. Kyle didn’t want another argument, so he didn’t ask about it, and instead rested back against his headboard. “It is alright… I’m feeling a lot better as it is. I think I want to go to the beach today.”
‘ I wish I could come with you, but I need to remain attending that rabbit.’ Roach sighed. ‘ I worry about leaving it.’
Kyle frowned before nodding. He did give him the rabbit to nurse back to health. “You’re right. Did you name the rabbit?”
‘ No… If I name it, I’ll get attached to it and it’s best to send it back. ’ He sighed and shook his head.
Kyle nodded a little. “Well, I suppose Malika and I will go to the beach…” Oh, but if he went to the beach, he’d have to bring Alex since Alex was his guard… Maybe he could get a different guard to come.
‘ I hope you both have fun. ’ Roach stood and then turned and left, closing the door behind him.
Kyle’s shoulders dropped. He wished their relationship would return back to normal, eventually. Hopefully before he was married in the spring. He had another maid get Malika and then he stood up, ignoring the fatigue, and started to dress.
Malika came much faster than he was expecting, helping to lace his bodice before helping him step into some pants. “I want to go to the beach.” He told her.
“Of course! I’m glad you’re feeling better! Do you want me to tell Alex?” Malika tilted her head.
Kyle hesitated. Well, he supposed he had to. “Yes, but ask if Farah can come as well.”
Malika smiled. “Of course.” She turned and left. Kyle sat in his window seat, closing his eyes again and waiting for Malika to return. “They’ve brought around a carriage.” She said, when she did.
So, Kyle nodded before standing and following her out to the carriage. He ignored Alex’s offer to help him into the carriage, getting up and into it on his own, before sitting beside Malika.
Alex looked hurt, but Kyle just looked out the carriage window, resting his hands in his lap.
Farah smiled when she got in and sat. “I am glad you are feeling better, Prince Kyle.”
“Thank you.” Kyle nodded. “I am, as well.” He smiled.
“We were very worried.” Farah continued. Alex looked away, his hands clenching slightly. Kyle wished he could stop picking up all of these little things about him but… he knew that would never happen. He’d always notice Alex, even when he didn’t want to.
Malika smiled. “It’s so good that you are feeling better.” She linked her arm through Kyle’s and hummed.
“I just wish Roach would talk to me.” Kyle confessed, frowning when both Alex and Farah winced. “He did, briefly, but it’s clear he’s still upset… I understand why, but I just… wish he would talk to me…”
“I’m sure he will, eventually.” Farah frowned, tilting her head. “Alex, don’t you think so?”
Alex cringed. “Yeah, I’m sure he will.”
Kyle didn’t quite believe him but he nodded a little, anyway, and turned back to the carriage window. He watched the trees pass by as they rode, falling silent. When they arrived at the beach, he reluctantly let Alex help him step out, but he followed Malika to the edge of the water, not surprised when Alex and Farah stayed back.
Malika had brought a basket, which Kyle hadn’t noticed until that moment and she pulled a blanket out of it, laying it down so they could rest on it. Kyle gladly did so, leaning back on his hands. “I wonder if King Graves will allow me to sunbathe or if it will be considered improper.” Kyle murmured.
“Oh, I hope so.” Malika furrowed her brows. “But… I thought that Laupin was constantly shrouded in darkness?”
“That’s what they say…” Kyle shrugged. “I don’t believe that.” He didn’t think anyone could live like that. Constantly shrouded in darkness. Even if one’s magic was shadow… Why would you choose to live without light?
Kyle could never make himself live surrounded by darkness. He knew if Laupin truly was a kingdom of darkness and nothing more, he would have no choice, but he would never choose to live like that. “Perhaps we can find sun spots. Make them.” He smiled, nudging her.
Malika smiled. “I think so.”
Kyle relaxed and closed his eyes, enjoying the warmth on his skin. It was pleasant and he enjoyed the soft feeling, comparing it to water washing over his skin. “I’ll miss the beach…” He murmured, since Laupin was inland.
Malika was quiet and then she nodded in agreement. “I will, too. The constant smell of salt in the air… the sand…” She swiped her hand through the sand, scooping up some and rubbing her thumb over it.
“You can stay, Malika…” Kyle reminded. “If you want to, I will let you.”
“I will miss my home.” She admitted, nodding slightly. “But I will miss you, more. My duty is to you and I plan to fulfill that for as long as I can.”
Kyle softened and then smiled. “I won’t make you stay, then.” He turned back to the water. “What of Farah?”
Malika paused and then sighed. “She will move on. I care deeply for her but there are more important things.”
Kyle frowned. He knew he couldn’t say anything, because then he would be being a hypocrite, but… well, he worried his Lady was putting aside her feelings for Kyle. For… her duty.
Like Kyle was doing for his own. But the problem was that Malika had a choice. Kyle likely could try to convince his father, but at the end of the day, there was little he could do but hope his father listened. Malika was being actively told she could stay home.
But, he knew better than to really push the issue, because Malika could respond back that he was one to talk. His whole engagement had just… exhausted him. He was ready to just be married and settle into whatever life he was being given by the gods. Having to continue to fight with everything around him was getting to be more than he wanted to keep taking.
Sometimes, he wished he could lay down and sleep for hours and hours. He wished he could block out the entire world and all of his responsibilities and his duties. He sighed and laid fully back on the blanket, closing his eyes again and continuing to feel the sun on his skin, basking in it. He listened to the sound of the ocean around him, of birds in the distance… It was so peaceful… so pleasant…
And so, he found himself, still exhausted from the rejection sickness, slowly drifting off to a peaceful sleep.
-
Kyle sighed, changing into his night dress. Malika was still in his room, working on some embroidery. Kyle didn’t enjoy embroidery, so he rarely did it. Malika pursued it as a hobby, though she also didn’t get that much joy from it.
She was humming, though, a song he’d heard in his childhood, many times.
I bring to you, my child My darling little dove I bring to you three apples From the treetops up above
And from those three apples My darling little dove I’ll make you three pies I’ll make them full of love
It was a silly little song, one Price would hum when he was filling out letters while Kyle and Roach poured over books claiming to have sketches of big fantastical creatures. Malika was often sitting in a chair, embroidering then as well.
Kyle shook his head, amused at the memory, and then sighed, moving to his bed and climbing into it. His body was exhausted and he wanted nothing more than to lay and rest and finally hopefully sleep. “I hope my body finally gets over this silly sickness.” He sighed.
“Me too… I worry for you.” Malika frowned before shaking her head. “But it is important to rest until you are fully better.”
“I know, I know. Trust me, I have no plans of doing anything else.” Kyle smiled, closing his eyes. He then opened them to pick up the cup of tea that a maid had brought to him. It was slightly sweeter than he preferred, but he didn’t mind.
Malika was sipping her own, resting back against her chair as she sewed. “You know what I hope to see in Laupin?”
“What?” Kyle looked up at her, surprised.
Malika smiled. “I have heard that some of the nobles keep small Shadow dragons as pets. Isn’t that so darling? They breathe shadows rather than flames or smoke.”
Kyle had to agree that that did sound adorable. “Maybe King Graves has one.”
“Maybe.” Malika seemed to like that idea very much. “Maybe we could ask him for one.”
Kyle laughed, softly. “Maybe.” He closed his eyes and settled into the bed, relaxing. He’d gone to see his father when they got back. He looked so stressed. Exhausted. He felt bad for his father. He was dealing with so much.
He was an active part of the war for the empire and it seemed the stress never ended for him. He hoped his father would not burn out too heavily.
“Malika… I miss when things were not so stressful.” He confessed, turning to look at her.
Malika frowned before sighing. “Me too. Being a child was so much simpler…”
Kyle shook his head before deciding he needed to sleep, taking the rest of his tea and finishing it before turning over and dozing off.
-
He woke to the rockyness of a carriage ride. His head felt heavy, like it used to when he was given a sleeping draught for nightmares. He reached up to touch his head, not understanding. He’d fallen asleep in his bed, why was he in a carriage?
He slowly lifted up, able to smell Malika’s familiar scent of vanilla next to him, and looked around, making out his surroundings. There was just the two of them in the carriage, but he was able to make out voices, likely from the driver’s seat.
“I think we should have tied them…”
“I worried that would make him freak out more when he woke up.”
Kyle made a face, realizing they may have been kidnapped. All of Malika’s searching for answers had come up with nothing… He took a deep breath to keep from panicking, trying to shake the grogginess from his head, while acknowledging this grogginess may have been what kept him from panicking.
He looked to his left, seeing Malika was still asleep, curled up to the side of the carriage, and he gently shook her. “Mal… Malika…”
Malika woke up just as slowly, blinking her eyes and looking around. “Where are we?”
“I think we’ve been kidnapped…” Kyle murmured. He moved to the window of the carriage, seeing nothing but trees around them.
“By who??” Malika was upright, immediately, looking panicked. She was also in her nightdress, so Gaz realized they must have been kidnapped after she went to bed. So whoever this was had likely planned this.
He looked around the carriage, trying to think of what to do. “Mal… How are we going to get out of this?”
Malika looked frightened, though she didn’t shrink down. Instead, she closed her eyes, starting to whisper to herself, and then put her hands together before pulling them apart, a dagger of light appearing in her hands.
The carriage stopped right as the dagger dropped into her hand and she quickly hid it under the cloak she was wearing and Kyle looked down at himself, noticing that he was also wearing a cloak.
Kyle tensed at hearing footsteps come around the carriage and then the carriage door was swinging open. Malika didn’t give their captors a chance to speak or even show their face, throwing herself out the door slashing.
Kyle was quick to follow, sprinting through the woods with her. His heart pounded, his brain starting to finally work through the brain fog while he ran. He didn’t even think about his bare feet, covered only by the stockings he wore to bed for warmth, hitting against roots and rocks.
He just kept following Malika, ignoring the heavy running footsteps behind him.
“Kyle, Malika, stop!”
Kyle didn’t, he couldn’t, he could only keep running. His heart soon became the only thing he could hear, drowning out footsteps and cries of his name. Then, Malika was suddenly stopping, but before he could even stop himself, he was hitting her and they were both sent rolling down a grassy cliff side.
It felt like they rolled for ages before Kyle slammed against a tree, the air being knocked from his lungs. “Fuck…” He cursed, seeing that Malika had simply slid to a stop near by.
“Kyle… Kyle we have to keep going…” She scrambled up to her feet and Kyle agreed, though his body had protests. However, she moved to him, helping him up.
“Did you see our captors?” He asked as they continued to move, though much slower this time.
“No… I’m sorry, I should have looked.” Malika shook her head, clearly struggling to support his weight.
“It’s alright, Mal…” Kyle shook his head. “We were running, that was distracting enough.” He wheezed and held his side, which had hit the tree the hardest. “We need to get to a town and then start to travel back to my father’s castle.”
Malika nodded and they stopped at a fallen log, so Kyle could sit. “I will consult the land around us…” She closed her eyes again, her breathing slowing and evening. Then, she was pointing in a direction. “That way. If we keep going that way, we will find a town.”
Kyle relaxed and nodded. “Oh… what will we do once we get there? We will have no money and we’re both in a night dress!”
“You have no money. I’ve been… preparing for this ever since I discovered the plot to kidnap you.” Malika smiled, reaching into her dress pocket and pulling out a small bag, which jingled slightly. “I started to go to sleep with it in my pocket.”
“Oh you brilliant, brilliant girl.” Kyle grinned. Malika had thought of everything. He then winced as the pain in his side reappeared. “We need to keep traveling.”
“I agree.” Malika nodded. She moved to help him stand, but Kyle waved her off, standing on his own. Then, they headed in the direction she pointed.
It ended up being nearly nightfall when they found a town. Both of them hugged their cloaks tight around each other and Kyle prayed the seamstress was still open. However, no such luck as they went to the shop, seeing that there was a sign that said she was closed for the Solstice.
Gaz dropped his shoulders, sighing. “We don’t even celebrate that, here!” He turned to Malika, who looked as exhausted as he felt. His side was still hurting and his whole body needed sleep. “What do we do now?”
Malika blinked her eyes and then looked around. “I don’t know… We could sleep in our cloaks at the inn and figure this out, tomorrow?”
Kyle wasn’t sure he liked that idea. But, it seemed to be the best they had. Then, Malika got a look on her face. “What?”
“Maybe she has some in her shop. We won’t be here when she gets back and you could send some money to say sorry?” Malika tilted her head.
Kyle wasn’t quite sure he liked the idea of stealing but… he supposed it was the necessary evil. “How will we even get in?”
Malika looked around, seeing the street was mostly empty, then she tugged Gaz around to the side, finding a door in the back, which she used the light dagger to brute force. Then, she led him in.
As expected, the seamstress had several dresses in the back, though only a few looked long enough to fit Gaz and small enough to fit Malika. They only took one, each, bundling them up and hiding them under their cloaks. Then, they quickly left, being careful not to be seen, before going to the inn.
There, Malika paid for a room. “The names, miss?”
“Oh,” Malika paused. “Uh… Mal and… and…”
Kyle paused, remembering a nickname his father had once called him, after a particularly rowdy ball. “Gaz.” He smiled, bowing his head a little.
Malika smiled at the innkeeper, an older Alpha woman who seemed a little put off, but the innkeeper smiled anyway and gave them a key, telling them where to find their room.
Then, they both headed to that direction, finding it at the top of some stairs. Kyle closed and locked the door before immediately going and dropping on the bed. “I am exhausted, Malika!”
“Me too.” She huffed, coming over and plopping on the bed beside him. But, then she got back up, taking Kyle’s dress and making him sit up to pull off his cloak. She then sighed. “We should have enough money to rent a horse and buy supplies. We can’t be that far from the castle, since they transported us while we were sleeping.”
“The worry will be avoiding them.” Kyle shook his head. “Whoever they are. How will we hide from them, if we don’t even know who they are?”
“I don’t know, Kyle-”
“No. I have to go by Gaz, now.” Kyle- Gaz shook his head. “Just call me Gaz until we get back.”
“Oh… Of course, Gaz.” Malika- Mal bowed her head slightly.
“And none of that! You are my cousin. We are traveling because your sister, who is sick and lives in the king’s village, has requested our presence. Our carriage was robbed.” Gaz spun the tale with ease, shaking his head. “Understand?”
“I do.” Mal nodded. “Can we sleep now?”
“Gods, yes!” Kyle immediately laid down to sleep.

That Ends Well - Chapter 7 - Regency AU
Winter turned into spring and a few things had occurred in this time. The first was that Prince Lucas, with what had been revealed about Ishacia would remain in the Red Kingdom until Prince Kyle’s wedding.
The second was that Queen Rodolfo had discovered that he was pregnant, again.
King Alejandro had not been informed of this, as Queen Rodolfo feared losing another baby and didn’t want his husband to become excited and then disappointed again.
Lady Riley, nor Lady Mactavish had told Lord Riley, either. However, on their front, the third thing, Lord Riley and King Alejandro had drawn up a union contract for the three of them, which would absolve Lady Mactavish’s status as a maiden and instead turn him to Lady Riley as well.
The fourth was that Prince Kyle and Lady Malika’s weddings had both been pushed, in the wake of King Valeria’s promise to attend. It was feared that she would make it a Blood Wedding and kill everyone who attended.

Winter turned into spring and a few things had occurred in this time. The first was that Prince Lucas, with what had been revealed about Ishacia would remain in the Red Kingdom until Prince Kyle’s wedding. This was… not a decision made lightly, but it was King Alejandro’s decision. He was at considerably less risk of being assassinated, so it was considered the safer option.
As it was, something had occurred the next morning and King Graves had had to leave for Laupin, immediately, though he promised he would return soon to see Prince Lucas.
The second was that Queen Rodolfo had discovered that he was pregnant, again. The physician he consulted, and midwife, had both told him that it was common to, shortly after births and miscarriages, easily conceive again.
It wasn’t quite marriage, but it was close, and plans for a small ceremony had been made.
The fourth was that Prince Kyle and Lady Malika’s weddings had both been pushed, in the wake of King Valeria’s promise to attend. It was feared that she would make it a Blood Wedding and kill everyone who attended.
Magic against Fae could not be exercised, due to Prince Lucas and Lady Riley’s presences, nor was King Price or King Alejandro willing to exercise it, it seemed. So, they had moved the wedding and it was planned to be heavily guarded.
While many of these things did cause much stress for everyone involved, it wasn’t nearly the level it could be, it seemed. In fact, as Prince Kyle’s wedding approached, things seemed to even out so most of the anxiety was simply caused by the fear of what may happen, not what was happening.
Kyle wished he had been more anxious. Maybe he could have seen what was to come… maybe he could have been more prepared for it.
Or maybe no one was ever truly prepared for the world falling apart around you.

Drodora’s true wedding ceremonies were a bit odd compared to everyone else’s. See, they occurred along the sea, in fact those being wed were wed directly above it, with a large covered platform, which they reached by boat.
However, they had a time before hand where the Bride and Groom were allowed to interact though, like Artemea and the Red Kingdom, it was not suggested they see each other. So, it became a game of who could talk to either one the most without letting them see the other.
Prince Kyle had always considered it a fun sport, loving the way the Bride and Groom almost danced around each other. And, in fact, as he stood on the sand, enjoying the feeling of the warm sun on his skin, he did his best to avoid looking at where Alex might be, trying to focus on King Alejandro as he spoke to him.
Queen Rodolfo had not arrived yet, having had an issue with his dress that morning, and Kyle had picked up on his anxiety fairly easily. “Your grace, I am sure he is fine.” Kyle tried to assure. “I can see the castle from this beach, I do not think anything has happened.”
King Alejandro smiled, though it was clearly strained. “I know, Prince Kyle. But, he is my mate. You will understand in time, though I’m sure Heir Alex does.”
“I do.” A hand slid around his waist and Kyle went to jerk away, to scold Alex, but his waist was grabbed so he couldn’t turn around. “I have a blindfold on, don’t worry. There was no way I was going to have you in reach without being able to touch you at least once.”
“Clever alpha.” Alejandro seemed impressed, chuckling. “He walked so confidently, I never would have known he had the blindfold on, if I hadn’t seen it.”
Kyle frowned, surprised by that, since he’d known Alex to be a bit clumsy. “Farah has us train by blindfolding ourselves and then she and I swordfight. This is much easier than that.”
Kyle relaxed at his fiance’s explanation and shook his head, finding himself amused. “My father will be less than impressed with your work around.”
The people had started to talk and Kyle knew his father was dealing with the bulk of it. Prince Kyle marrying his guard… A guard turning King… Judgment had not been kind to Alex in any of these conversations… Hell, Kyle could pick up on the whispers even now.
The way ladies glanced at them over their wine cups. He imagined he could hear the whispers, surrounding him, suffocating him. I suppose he’s better than King Phillip Graves, but what good will a guard be at being King?
Prince Kyle wasn’t born a royal, he won’t be much better at being Queen.
Did you know he’s afraid of pregnancy? That he dismisses his maids when they’re pregnant. How on earth will he provide an heir?? And for it to be from that Alpha, too.
He’s not refined enough to be King. It’s bad enough that King Alejandro insisted Nehelune join the empire again, those barbarians should have been slaughtered. But to have someone close to it on the throne?
Where does he come from, anyway?
Who knows. He’s an orphan, no family.
Well, they’re well suited for each other.
Kyle hated rumors. He’d grown up hearing them about his birth parents and then about his brother, Roach, and his father, and himself. He grew tired of them and if he had his way, no one would be allowed to use them, ever again.
King Alejandro’s attention seemed to be caught and then a relaxed smile came on his face. It wasn’t quite the one Kyle noted was reserved for Rodolfo, but it was still clearly full of much affection.
Then, a young omega approached, looking almost like he was glancing around. “King Tio… Where is my husband?”
“I don’t know,” King Alejandro frowned.
Kyle put the pieces together, remembering the reveal of Lucas a few weeks after a midnight wedding had been had for the Prince. He bowed a little, since this would be Queen Lucas or… no, no it wouldn’t. He had not been crowned yet.
The omega appeared to turn distraught. “He should be here by now. In his letter, he stated he would arrive last night, but he never did!”
Kyle was struck by the beauty of the omega, suddenly. Prince Lucas was… painfully beautiful. Ethereally beautiful. He was so incredibly grateful Alex’s eyes were covered by a blindfold, so he could not see. He saw pointed ears poke from under curls and he realized.
It felt almost as if a glamor had been shattered and while Prince Lucas was still quite beautiful, he was not nearly to the level as he had been a mere few moments before. He doubted the poor omega even knew he was doing it…
King Alejandro seemed to gently guide Lucas away, passing him off to Lord Kate who was nearby, standing with her wife. Kyle shook his head, amused, at the easy affectionate smile that she immediately gave Lucas and Lady Jen seemed to just melt before she was fawning over Lucas, too far away for Kyle to hear.
Lady Jen was very maternal, she had a tendency to take omegas under her arm and guide them, though she did the same with young alphas, too. She had wanted her own children but… apparently it was not possible.
Kyle glanced over near the platform he would be married on, nerves growing as he saw a painter set up. Another Drodorian custom.
Then, Queen Rodolfo arrived. He was gently helped from the carriage by a footman and Kyle, despite knowing already, found himself almost shocked by the Queen’s pregnancy. He had known, it shouldn’t have been too completely shocking, but it was.
Kyle immediately found himself looking for King Alejandro, seeing that his attention had been caught by the Queen rather immediately and Kyle couldn’t help wincing slightly. Because at first Alejandro’s eyes lit up and then his expression turned to one of a deep frown. “Alex… go find Farah, she mentioned needing to talk to you about something.”
“Alright, I love you.”
“I love you, too.” Kyle melted and then he pulled away, careful to keep his back to Alex so he wouldn’t see him, and he immediately followed King Alejandro to Queen Rodolfo, watching his brother and Soap follow him out of the carriage.
Both Ladies immediately left after a quick greeting, finding Lord Riley who was by Kyle’s father. Kyle went to stop Roach, but he decided against it, deciding he’d rather hear what was going on. So, he stayed nearby, gesturing Malika over.
She tilted her head as she moved to him, but Kyle simply shook his head. Thankfully, she seemed to understand and then smiled. “Are you enjoying your wedding, Prince Kyle?”
“I am. Very much.” Kyle smiled. “Did you see Alex donned a blindfold?”
“I watched Lord Farah help him put it on.” Malika giggled, softly. “I thought you might like the surprise.”
Kyle smiled and nodded, before lowering his voice. “I want to hear King Alejandro and Queen Rodolfo speak. But… first… have any of your… sources heard anything about the King of Laupin’s arrival?”
Malika frowned and furrowed her brows. “No… Well, actually, I did hear that one of the carriages is unaccounted for… The guest never showed but I feel as if it was an entire King they would have raised a bit more of an alarm.”
“That’s odd… He should be here, he was invited. His wife is here…” Kyle shook his head.
But, he saw that King Alejandro had finally made it to Queen Rodolfo and so he decided to table the issue, instead listening carefully.
“Mi Reina… you are with child?”
“I am…”
“I… Why did you not inform me?”
“I didn’t want your hopes to be raised but the physician says that I am healthy and so is the baby… I… I… I was afraid that you might be excited or even worried and I didn’t want to distract you…”
Malika and Kyle shared a look. Queen Rodolfo worried about everything, but even Kyle would admit this may have been the best course of action. Kyle glanced over, seeing that King Alejandro didn’t look angry. He was, instead, pulling the Queen close and kissing his hair. “It’s alright. I’m not angry, Mi Estrella.”
Kyle felt relieved when he saw Queen Rodolfo relax and close his eyes for a moment before King Alejandro pulled him away to the others.
Kyle turned back to Malika. “What do you think you could find out about King Graves? His wife seems distraught at his lack of presence…”
“I will do my best.” Malika bowed her head and then she left Kyle. Kyle quickly glanced around, doing his best to avoid where Alex might be, but before he could find someone to talk to, Lady Jen came over and guided him over to the small boat.
“Are you nervous, dear?” She asked, gently helping him into it. “Excited?”
“Both.” Kyle admitted. “I… I thought when I had been informed of my wedding that it would happen in a kingdom I didn’t know… that I would be leaving my home, but… somehow, I find myself more anxious now than I was over that.”
“I understand, dear.” Lady Jen murmured. She’d been like a mother figure to Kyle. “I was terrified when I rode out to my own platform to marry Lord Kate. This same one you ride out to, now.”
“How did you ease your nerves?” Kyle frowned.
“I didn’t. I was terrified the entire affair! I knew I had no reason to be afraid, but weddings are a big change, they’re hard to not be afraid of…” Lady Jen murmured.
Kyle couldn’t help agreeing. He was terrified of his wedding. He loved Alex, he wasn’t afraid of Alex, he was… afraid of… well, nothing. He was still afraid. “Thank you, Lady Jen…” Well, at least he wasn’t abnormal. Weddings were huge, a big thing in his life. Especially since his cemented that he would be Queen one day.
Though, he had pretty much always known he would be a Queen, just of where was the issue. She gently nudged the boat and he took a deep breath, reaching up when he made it to the platform so the priestess could help him out of the boat.
Then, he stood in his spot, facing away from where Alex would stand. He felt his footsteps rather than heard them, turning around once he was allowed to. His breath caught in his chest as he looked at Alex and he looked over the blue…
His entire outfit was blue, it made sense as that was one of Drodora’s colors. Blue and sand gold… Kyle’s own dress was gold and blue and he matched with the gold accents on Alex’s clothing. He did note Alex was wearing yet another cloak, but most Alphas wore them at their weddings. Even still… Kyle’s mind went back to what he’d felt under Alex’s, though neither had spoken about it.
Alex’s eyes traveled over him and then a grin was breaking out on the alpha’s face, one Kyle couldn’t help just melting at. The cool air from the sea had his dress whipping around his body and he hoped the painter would keep that as a detail. More than anything, he hoped the painter would capture the grin on Alex’s face, wanting to keep it forever.
The priestess began the ceremony with a prayer to Drodo before she was having Alex and Kyle link hands, where she took a silk rope and then started to bind their hands together, tying sailor knots on their wrists.
Then, she got out a dagger. “To be an omega is to bleed for your alpha.” The priestess murmured. “You sacrifice everything for him, you give him everything. Can you honor this?”
“It is my duty and my pleasure.” Kyle answered and then went to hold out his hand, before frowning as he was stopped by Alex.
Alex shook his head. “No. I don’t need you to bleed for me. It’s not your duty… Your duty is to be loved by me, that’s it.”
Kyle stared at Alex and forced himself not to turn his head to see if anyone was staring at them. The Priestess, however, which he could see sort of, was clearly very flustered by this action. “Alex, I-”
“No. I’m putting my foot down.” Alex shook his head. “Our first act, bound, will not be pain on your part. Not… Not after what I did, at least.”
Kyle paused and then he just melted, nodding. “I understand…” He nodded at the priestess who, though still flustered, put the dagger away. “I would still bleed for you. I would still sacrifice all I have.”
“I won’t let you.” Alex shook his head. “You will never have to sacrifice a damn thing for me.”
Kyle found himself blushing and he took a deep breath.
“Well, since… you’re not proceeding with that…” The Priestess frowned. “All that is left is the kiss.”
Kyle barely got even a moment to remark on it because Alex immediately surged forward, kissing Kyle deeply. Kyle gasped before he was pressing forward and into Alex.
When they pulled apart, Kyle turned to face their guests, trying to contain just how happy he was. Just last summer, he’d resigned himself to marrying King Phillip Graves, and he’d never ever imagined being able to marry and freely love Alex, yet… here he was.
He supposed he’d need to give a speech, he doubted Alex had one prepared, but before he could start to speak, a carriage pulled up, and someone was getting out. He recognized them as King Graves, frowning deeply.
Something black seeped from his head and from the way Prince Lucas immediately up and rushing to him, Kyle had to assume it was an injury. “Unbind us.” Alex immediately told the priestess, who was quick with untying the rope.
Kyle tensed as the second person got out of the carriage, recognizing King Valeria immediately. He’d met her twice, the first was when he was young, only 14… He’d gone to her coronation when she was 16 and her parents had both tragically died.
The second was when she marched into his father’s war room, while King Alejandro was there seeking counsel, and declared war on the Red Kingdom, and the Empire.
The first time, he’d thought she was strong… but terrifying. Her dark eyes had shown no emotion her entire coronation. No excitement, no anxiety, nothing. The second time, he’d been so caught up in trying to listen to his father as he gave counsel that he barely understood what had happened until it was over. She was like that, a tornado that tore through everything in her path. You barely know what’s happening until the storm has passed and you’re left with turmoil and destruction to clean.
Kyle looked at Alex, who was… staring at Farah. Both of their expressions were deeply grave, like they were sharing a dark secret. Farah had a death grip on Malika, who didn’t look frightened, but rather confused.
King Alejandro stood, immediately. “Valeria-”
“Save it.” King Valeria shook her head, laughing. “I have to admit, the Shadow King was hard to trick.” Her large crimson wings fluttered with her laughing.
King Graves glared at her and Kyle stumbled back as he realized King Graves’ eyes were black. “I didn’t know it was her. Her new wife can use illusionary magic. Did you know she’s Artemean?” He turned to King Alejandro, almost accusatory.
King Alejandro winced, and Kyle’s eyes went wide as he saw Princess Liliana finally step out of the carriage. He’d never met her before, but he recognized her from a painting that he’d seen only once. “Liliana?” Queen Rodolfo stood.
“Ahh… So this is your new Queen.” King Valeria moved to the table, but two guards were immediately in front of him.
King Valeria didn’t even look offended, just stepping back again and shrugging. “No matter. I am here to apprehend two criminals. They’ve committed treason against the Sylmean throne, and by extension, Artra’s.”
Kyle frowned when Alex tensed beside him, looking up to see Alex avoiding his eye. “Alex? What did you do?” He looked over their guests, confused what traitors Alex might be hiding.
“It wasn’t our fault…” Alex whispered. “We were kids, it wasn’t our choice.”
King Valeria had turned to face Alex and Kyle, staring right at Alex. “Farah Karim and Alex Keller. Heiress Farah, that is, and… well, it would be Lord now, wouldn’t it, Alex? Your mother passed just last year.”
“Heiress…” Kyle whispered before growing irritated. Fae liked to play games, even his brother had. Speaking of, he looked at his brother, who looked just as confused as he did. Roach met his eyes and then he was frowning deeply. “Enough games, Valeria!”
Valeria whipped her head to stare at Kyle, but Kyle stood strong, despite how much he wanted to wither back. However, even with her glare, his mind wanted to remark on how beautiful she was. Alluring… He wanted to give in to her, but he refused. “Your friend, Farah, is Heiress to the Sylmean throne. She deserted, and therefore she is a traitor. You’re harboring a traitor.”
Her wrist flicked and then flames appeared in her hand before she threw them at Alex, who didn’t even flinch, despite Kyle immediately jumping away from him. Kyle could feel the heat from the flames as they caught on Alex’s cloak, but Alex just looked away from him. When his shirt and cloak had burnt, he flicked his own hand and the flames extinguished.
Not an inch of his skin was red or charred. Alex slowly turned to face King Valeria, and four broken wings appeared out of his back, hanging limply.
Kyle’s eyes widened, finding himself in shock. He looked up at Alex, who shook his head. Farah immediately stepped forward. “I didn’t desert! I was kidnapped by Lord Barkov of Ishacia! I hadn’t presented, yet, and he had plans to force me to marry him if I presented as an omega, or kill me if I was an alpha. I knew if I returned to Sylmea, it would happen again!”
Farah turned to Kyle, her expression pleading. “Alex presented early and was betrothed to my older brother, he was my best friend. My brother. When I was kidnapped, he followed us and helped me escape. By that point, we were on the border of Viton and Ishacia, so we ran the other direction. It was an entire year before we made it to Drodora and found Lord Kate Laswell and her wife… Please, Kyle, we didn’t deceive you for malicious reasons.”
Kyle looked at Lord Kate, who looked resigned. “Did you know??” He asked, and she just nodded. He looked to his father, who nodded as well. So that was why he so easily gave into the idea of marriage… He knew Alex wasn’t simply a guard, he was a Lord’s Son. “Why??? Why didn’t I get to know??”
“This!” Alex exclaimed, gesturing to King Valeria, who looked unbelievably smug.
King Price shook his head. “It was my idea, Kyle. I didn’t want her finding any sort of in with you, so we kept it locked away. She tricked Princess Liliana-”
“No!” Princess Liliana shook her head, looking angry. “She freed me, she did not trick me. My father was- She was hurting me. She was… abusing me. King Valeria did come with intent to trick me, yes, but when she came and she saw what my father did to me, she killed her and helped me escape.”
This was too much for Kyle. His head was spinning and he really just wanted everyone to shut the fuck up. He turned back to Alex and he was… shocked he hadn’t noticed the fae features before. Though, maybe some sort of glamor had been used because he really should have noticed some of these.
Pointed ears… the way the air around him seemed to just shimmer… Just how alluring he was. Kyle knew he couldn’t have been tricked… If Alex resorted to that, he would have used it to make Kyle run away, not kidnap him. Even still, he felt lied to… he felt hurt.
“When did you plan on telling me?” He asked, softly.
Alex looked down. “Tonight… And last night. And the night before. Every night since you forgave me. When you felt my wings under my cloak. But I was terrified. I love you more than I think I could reasonably express and the idea of losing you has been one of my worst fears since the day I met you.”
Kyle could remember, so plainly, the day that his father had come and informed him that he had a new guard. He’d been 14 years old, only with his father for 2 years at that point. His father had introduced him to this 16 year old alpha, who he remembered was so funny… So kind and… Kyle had immediately been smitten with him.
Alex had been the first one to be able to cheer Roach up, even, when he arrived at the castle the following week. He’d met Farah a few months later and all four, and then five when his Lady Malika arrived at the castle, had been fast close friends.
Kyle looked over as he heard Farah, again. She seemed to hesitate before she undid her cloak and took it off, large black wings unfolding and spreading out. They were massive, bigger than King Valeria’s, and iridescent in the light.
Malika looked in awe, moving forward to Farah, who looked down as she approached.
Kyle went to comment, though he wasn’t sure he had the words, and then he saw two guards run up, each holding cross bows. One was pointed at Alex, the other was at King Valeria.
He didn’t even think, just moving forward and kissing Alex deeply, turning them and trying hard not to flinch as pain ripped through his back. He knew Alex knew what had happened immediately, because Alex ripped away from the kiss, holding his back. “Kyle?? Kyle??”
The world had slowed down and Kyle imagined sand in an hourglass, which moved to just a single grain at a time, eons passing between each grain. Alex lowered him to the ground, holding him carefully.
The pain faded to cold, though it resurged temporarily as Alex snapped the bolt, leaving half of it in his back. Malika had been the one to teach them not to remove arrows, blades, or bolt, or you’d die faster.
“Kyle…” Alex pleaded. “Why would you do that??”
Kyle wanted to answer, he really tried to, but when he did, he just coughed up blood, closing his eyes as the sun became too bright. He opened them, again, shocked to see Queen Rodolfo was above him, examining over his face.
Roach was right next to the queen, and their hands were connected, glowing a soft blue color. Roach’s eyes were full of tears as he stared down at Kyle.
Alex was still holding him, Kyle knew because he recognized his scent. And, well, no one else’s shirt had just been burnt.
“I need him on his stomach.”
“Queen Rodolfo,” Alex started, “you might miscarry if you try to heal him.”
“It’s too late, just move him.” Rodolfo shook his head. Kyle frowned when he saw Queen Rodolfo touch his stomach and take deep breaths. “Now!” He barked when Alex hesitated.
Kyle cried in pain as he was moved, held against Alex’s chest. This was horrible… he was so cold… He shivered and moved so he could cling to Alex, who held him tightly. “Cold…” He whimpered.
“I’ve got you…” Alex promised.
Something hot touched his back and then finally the cold and pain started to subside. He melted and closed his eyes, panting softly. When it was over, he was allowed to lay back in a more comfortable position, still held by Alex.
Kyle turned to thank Rodolfo, though he frowned as he watched Rodolfo stand, his eyes full of horror. “Soap! Soap!-”
Kyle’s head whipped to the left when he heard Lord Riley’s voice practically tear through the air. “Johnny, no!”
Kyle wanted to see what was going on, but pressure filled his head, suddenly, and he was unconscious before his eyes could even comprehend anything.
