This is Lucky! He is indeed very “lucky” 😍 On May 11, 2021 Lucky rolled and was trapped under the lower portion of his stall at his owners home. It happened in the middle of the night and Lucky struggled to escape. The owner called us that morning after he cut Lucky free and we rushed to go help. Lucky was down and unable to stand. He had a pelvic fracture and peroneal nerve injury. We used a truck to move him to our stables (first time in the history of this island where a vehicle was used to move a pony). Lucky was strong and wanted to survive so we worked very hard for many months on rehabilitation. Going from unable to stand…to walking on three legs…to limping…to swimming…to running! Today you would never know Lucky suffered such a bad injury. He is a resident here and helps us out by pulling a cart a few times a week bringing grass or rice bran. This keeps his mind busy and helps keep him in shape. In years past Lucky would have been slaughtered…but thankfully things have changed and we can help what often seems hopeless. Pasta! The youngster with the most tendon laxity we’ve ever seen! He just arrived December 20th so has only been with us a short time. Despite that he is showing marked improvement with NSAIDs, corrective shows, and therapy. We need your help 🙏🏻 Overnight 4 horses on the island have died…another 40 or so are sick. 5 stables are affected so far. What started yesterday with a few horses not eating well has grown exponentially today. We’ve been to 5 stables today and seen 75 horses. Treated 40. We are running out of supplies and medications. We’ve drawn blood, taken stool samples, sent feed for testing. Preliminary results indicate the sickest animals have liver and kidney failure. It’s strongly suspected that a contamination of the grass has occurred perhaps a mold or something. After coming home late this evening we’ve been informed of at least 5 more sick horses. We are devastated to report that we lost both Esperenza and Scout today 😭💔 Esperenza simply could no longer get up on her own and hadn’t been improving despite the best care possible. Scout went down in the middle of the night with terrible colic. Given the poor body condition of both and need to minimize suffering we elected humane euthanasia in both cases. Run free sweet babies. Tamara…most likely bred on Sumbawa (we are trying to trace her brand) this mare has clearly been raced and traumatized. Another case of “oh she looks healthy why don’t you place her?” Sometimes they need a “soft” landing with kindness and love and not be expected to do anything. If they recover fully and trust again then they can be adopted but some cannot. They are flighty, afraid of certain people, potentially unsafe. For these cases it’s best they stay with us as the risk of them being abused or misunderstood is high. Tamara is young still so we are working with her. Stunning Romeo 🤩 I’ve known Romeo since I moved here in 2014. He was born on Sumba and was a successful racehorse. They “retire” young at around 2-4 years and this was when he came to Gili Trawangan. He passed through a series of owners doing various jobs pulling carts of goods and supplies and then tourist casts. But he was really too big for the carts and quite naughty. He then became a beach ride horse. Throughout the years I tried to purchase him multiple times as he was very kind and often was working with wounds or in a tiny, dirty stall. I used to see him almost daily and I’d talk with him in his stall and promise him@a better life someday. His final home was pretty good as a beach ride horse…but he didn’t really enjoy it. He’d run off with guests, roll in the sand, or walk into the ocean and lay down on them 🤣 March 2020 when Covid came I watched him leave the island with great sadness. I thought I’d never see him again. But in 2021 we were told he was for sale. His owners father was ill and they offered him to us first before running him through the sale. Of course we accepted. He’s big… He’s beautiful… He’s NAUGHTY… He’s aggressive to other horses… When ridden his nickname is “Rodeo”… But he is LOVED and in his FOREVER home. Best we can figure is he was born 2010 or 2011 making him a teenager. He’s lovingly sponsored by Javi Gianotten. He’s got a big stall, a run, and a huge paddock to play in. He gets groomed and loved daily…frequent beach walks…occasional rides. Rainbo December 20th until today Rainbo has severely contracted front tendons for an unknown reason. Through the use of corrective shoes, physical therapy, NSAIDS, and oxytetracycline he is showing rapid improvement. We feel confident that after a few months of corrective farrier work and supportive care he will go on to be able to live a normal and healthy life.
