Everyone knew the story of the brother’s birth.
One was born to the moon, kissed by the god of the dead himself. He was destined to be powerful, with the ability to leave death and destruction in his wake. One was born to the sun, kissed by the creator of life. He was destined to bring beauty and life, to heal a broken world. The two were destined to fight in a cycle through their lives.
No one had ever seen Pentagon and Rey joining forces to stand side-by-side.
Rey was the son born to the sun, to the light. A smile seemed to always be etched across his face, warm as the sun and just as inviting. His magic came as the ability to heal, to restore life. Rey was well-loved by those who know him, both for his abilities and for the way he trusted those around him. Rey worked for a coven headed by a well-loved leader in the community named Rafael Alvarez. The Alvarez family was well known for the way they helped the community.
Pentagon, on the other hand, was not as well-loved.
Talk of the young man’s ability to speak with the dead proceeded Pentagon’s name. His nature may have been cold, but he wasn’t cruel. He simply didn’t care about those who didn’t care about him. While he always offered a head to Alvarez and his brother Rey, most of Pentagon’s time was spent in the service of Dario Cueto. Cueto was a man all bout business, who sold the services of the magic users who worked for him.
That included his own children: Lillie and Gabriel.
Lillie had left home at a young age to work with Rafael Alvarez. Gabriel, on the other hand, was learning to take over his father’s role as head of the coven. While he seemed to be as well to do as his well-put-together father, the power Gabriel possessed was darker. In fact, it lined up with Pentagon’s. Gabriel could see death before it happened with a single touch his hand to a person’s skin. It was why he wore the thick black leather gloves over otherwise soft palms.
Pentagon couldn’t imagine the pressure that put the young Cueto under. He could speak with the dead as a conduit, but he didn’t have the inability to touch other people. Pentagon saw the careful measures his charge took to protect himself, especially from those he cared about. It was why he watched Gabriel now, eyes intent on the heir to the Cueto coven.
“You’re staring again, senor,” Gabriel spoke, not looking up from his plate. He pushed scrambled eggs around with his fork, not looking to meet Pentagon’s eyes, “Is there something wrong? Something on my face?”
Pentagon’s eyes raked down to the young man’s hands, noticing the lack of gloves, “You forgot to wear them, no? Your gloves?”
The clatter of the fork against his plate sounded in the otherwise quiet room as Gabriel set the utensil down, “I…I chose not to wear them. I’m trying to…I think I’m learning to control it…”
“Think or know?” Pentagon reached for the jar of honey on the table, the amber liquid drizzling over the toast on his own plate. Two fingers scooped the remaining string off of the plate, bringing fingers to his mouth to clean them. “There is a difference, is there not?”
Gabriel took a deep breath, deep brown eyes watching his older guard, “Know. I know I can control it…”
Pentagon rolled the cuff of his sleeve up over his wrist, “Time for something sweet, then. Touch me.”
“I’m sorry?”
“You can control the visions of death you see? Try your skill then,” Pentagon instructed, cold white eyes that contradicted his nature staring into the man’s soul, “Touch my arm.”
Gabriel’s hand reached forward, nimble fingers reaching out to wrap around Pentagon’s wrist. There was a feeling like a shock and Pentagon took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. Gabriel wouldn’t look at him and Pentagon knew why. Pentagon had always been aware of how he was going to pass from his mortal coil. It was the end of the prophecy, after all. The light always devoured the darkness. It didn’t matter if Pentagon and Fenix were on the same side or not, Pentagon knew Fenix would be his end.
And now, so did Gabriel.
