Yeah we've already talked about how outright stupid the lore n writing for modern Doom is, but tbh I can understand why they had to do something with Doomguy, why they had to make him The Specialest Boy instead of Just Some Guy. Do I like how they did it? No, I would've taken it a different direction. Do I think that hugo could've done it well even if he took it in the direction I would've? No, I have minimal faith in his story writing. But realistically, how many times can a guy singlehandedly accomplish the impossible before you have to acknowledge he's very much not Just Some Guy who happened to be at the right place at the right time? I think that, with how every single other person on the Phobos UAC base were killed in Doom I, doomguy stopped being Just Some Guy the moment he decided to do anything other than just lie down and die.

'youre actually a god and you were going to be this powerful Always' is just. not appealing. let him have some influence in his #own power. u dont even need to take the thing w the divinity machine out. just make him a separate entity from davoth instead of davoths #clone/destined counterpart. let dg make the decision to rise to davoths level instead of saying he was always there from the beginning. #sigh. i couldve written eternals story so much better. and yet. somehow i am still repeatedly drawn back to it. sighing smh.

Absolutely LOVE the fact that classic Doom occasionally forces you to sprint across hazard pits to get critical items. it's a canon fact that sometimes doomguy just goes "well I can't get through this locked door so I guess I'll just run across that pool of lava :)" and then he just skitters across it turned at a 45° angle like some sort of half-crab

You probably could go and squish his cheeks if you really wanted to, provided he wasn't actively in the middle of fighting. He'd probably be pretty confused as to why you were doing it, and awkward about the intrusion of personal space, but he wouldn't hurt you or anything.

At any rate, thank you so much! He is my blorbo, so of course I have put a great deal of effort into characterizing him. I'm glad you like how I characterize him, too!

Love calling video game substances soup. Lava? That's soup. Neon green toxic radioactive sludge? Soup! Boiling rivers of blood? It'a soup. Ambiguously glowing liquid that heals you if you stand in it long enough? Obviously, this one's soup. Gooey slime that slows your movement when you walk through it? You guessed it, soup. Gene-altering chemicals that turn you into a horrible monster if you touch them? Still soup, babey!

All of it is soup, and yes, I will be jumping in it. to have a little sip.

I always want to send people asks but I’m always too afraid to send them, hell even now I’m too afraid to come off anon, do you have any advice for people who are still a bit afraid of sending asks?

Also sorry if this is a weird/sucky ask I also suck at thinking of things to ask lol

Now, the thing you need to remember when trying to work up the courage to send an ask is, generally speaking, at least in my experience, no one really cares who you are. With the exception of "as long as you're not being a jerk/harassing the person/etc," you're not going to be judged or scrutinized somehow for sending in an ask, you're not going to have a callout post made at you for sending an ask, you're not going to be ostracized or blocked or anything.

Think about when you see someone else answering an ask. How much attention do you ever pay to the person who sent the ask, aside from the actual content of the ask? I'm willing to bet the answer there is "very little." The same is also very true for the person you're sending the ask to- if you send me an ask off-anon, I'm mostly going to be going "oh! An ask! :DDD How should I answer this?" I have never gone "oh ew look at this idiot, sending an ASK, how cringe," or anything like that, and I don't think anyone who chooses to keep asks on and encourages people to send stuff in would do that. Mostly, I'm happy to have the interaction and happy to know someone's interested in whatever it is I'm talking about, and mostly more focused on answering the ask, and not judging you for whatever reason.

As for what to ask, given that most of tumblr's userbase is neurodivergent and/or into some fandom or other, you can typically pretty easily ask yourself "what would I like to be asked about my hyperfixation/fandom/current project" and then just apply that to whatever it is they're doing instead. Most people are generally pretty happy to be given any reason to ramble about something they're interested in with only slight prompting!

Thank you, he's been really fun to draw! I kinda think I'd like to make him even worse, or be kinda malleable with his design, but as it turns out I'm not actually great at coming up with lots of ideas for body horror, n what I've got so far is about the limit of my imagination eheheh

As for what happened to him, no, he was never captured and corrupted or anything! All of his physical changes are self-inflicted, though he doesn't realize that, and could easily be reversed, though he's not aware of that, either. The short version is, he's come into contact with an immense amount of arcane energy, both from handling the runes that make up the fabric of the universe (with his bare hands, no less!!) and in slaying all the most powerful entities that could possibly call themselves Quake- Shub, Armagon, that dragon in Dissolution of Eternity, and Cthon for the second time in Dimension of the Machine. Through conquest, through will, through the steady accumulation of achievement (and arcane runes,) he has become the most powerful entity in the sprawling, nightmarish realms of Quake, and Champion of the Machine besides. Effectively, he IS Quake, and with the power to warp reality to his will, he could do anything he wants.

The problem is, he doesn't realize this. Oh, he has some understanding that the runes are powerful and grant power to their weilders, and some vague impression that the Machine isn't a realm itself, but a place between, a connection between realms, but he doesn't know that he controls it. The slipgates always lead him to some new nightmare realm full of monsters because that's what they've always done in his experience, so that's what he expects them to do, and so that's what they do. And the monsters in those realms have always attacked him, so that's what he expects them to do, so that's what they do. He is, unknowingly, commanding the very world that he controls to be hostile to him, simply because he is unaware that he could do anything else- or that he is doing it at all.

In theory, this could go on infinitely unchanging, endless slipgates to endless realms, until he eventually made his way back to the Machine, only to begin again with a new slipgate. The problem, his physical change, began when he started to wonder if he was entirely human anymore. It started out just as wondering if he ever would see another living, friendly human again, because aside from just being all hostile, all of the even vaguely humanoid things he comes across are still distinctly not human- not even the ones that definitely were human once, like the Operation Counterstrike zombies. Then he began to think how strange, or coincidental, or unlikely it was that he was the only human that should be there.

Then he began to wonder if, maybe, it wasn't actually that strange at all that he was the only human, because maybe, he wasn't actually all that human anymore. How long had it been- centuries? Millenia? Longer? Humans don't live that long, he was pretty sure. And he didn't know exactly what those runes were capable of, but he'd held them, felt their power as it made his skin rupture and blood burst from his veins, as they forced arcane secrets into his head. Surely, that would leave some sort of lasting effect. And simply existing in the space of the Machine- a place that bends and breaks the rules of what he knows- humans couldn't exist there. They simply couldn't.

So he wondered if he was still human, or if he was changing, or when the change had begun, or when the signs of it would start to show.

By the time he was injured- arm nearly slashed off- he was quite convinced that he couldn't be human any more, because a human couldn't survive that, and he was certain, at any moment, the physical changes would start manifesting themselves.

And because he was the one in control, and he expected it to happen, it did.

So now, here he is, changed, grotesque, very much not human, all of it by his own hand, and all of it undoable, if only he realized he was the one who did it.

What's your favorite sci-fi that's a fantasy and your favorite fantasy that's a sci-fi

(this is a semi joke ask based on the tags of your post so feel free to answer it however you want)

I mean, it's not so much "this fantasy story is actually scifi" so much as it is "these are the exact same thing just with a different color paint." For example, allow me to describe a video game series:

Protagonist most commonly depicted with blue eyes, blond hair, and a green outfit

Also commonly semiverbal or mute

With an inordinate amount of courage/bravery/resiliance

He's continually fighting the same enemy in an endless, repetitive battle

Despite overwhelming odds, he always manages to win, only for the evil to come back in some destructive manner, requiring the protag to return as well

Other features of the series include:

Magic sword that must be retrieved

Magic sword is at some point broken

A final boss is defeated for a second time after magic sword is buried in their forehead and left there

Protag is guided by a glowing wolf

Protag is incapacitated and ends up sleeping for a really long time in a hidden sanctum

Exploration of numerous ruined castles/temples/dungeons infested with evil

Now. Which series am I describing?

I know I’m probably really late to this but if that ask game is still happening I’d like to ask desire for Caraval.

AUGH ITS BEEN LIKE 4 MONTHS SINCE I REBLOGGED THAT MEME but yeah sure I'm always down to talk about characters!

desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?

The one thing that Caraval desires more than anything else is connection. Family. People he knows he can trust to have his back in a tight spot, and people who, in turn, he can help pull out of their own tight spots. He wants to be part of something, not necessarily something big, or grand, or world changing, but something close and purposeful. He wants community.

Unfortunately, this has been denied to him multiple times, from the family he was born into dying to illness while he was away, despite the money and medicine he sent home to them, to his reputation with the family he made in his squad being destroyed after it was discovered he was using his status as a surgeon to smuggle drugs. Follow that up with a long period of only being able to find work with the more unsavorable crowds who don't care so much about morality, and he's gotten a bit bitter and cynical. He knows family is what he wants. He just doesn't expect to really be able to get it anymore.

As for what he's willing to do for that family, should he have it, well. It's no coincidence he was discovered smuggling drugs just around the same time of his family's illness.
