Forefront Post 8 : The Windshield Wiper (2021)
The Windshield Wiper is an animated short film released on 13th July 2021. It is written, directed and designed by Alberto Mielgo, a spanish animator and artist and is produced by Pinkman.tv. and Leo Sanchez Studio. The film has won Oscar for best animated short film 2022 which is regarded by many as the most prestigious, significant award in the entertainment industry worldwide.
Innovative and Influential
The Windshield Wiper is a collection of short stories that explores contemporary themes of love, romance, dating, and heartbreak. I found it quite innovative how these concepts were presented with a different approach to storytelling. It features a multi-narrative plot, a type of story that follows several protagonists rather than focusing on one main character. We usually see animated films with a conventional single-story, a main heroic character and the story revolves around it but this film has different stories going on simultaneously that have no connection with each other. We get to see several characters dealing with different situations and building different narratives around the same theme. This is a trend that has been in live action fiction films since the late 90s for example the film Magnolia (1999), Happiness(1998) and crash (2004), but what's influential is that it has worked its way into animation. The narrative structure in these films has turned out to be unusually successful as demonstrated by these films winning Oscars. The Windshield Wiper is indicative that this trend is growing and building its momentum, it's a very successful narrative structure that has unusual characteristics of being highly successful and famous when done well.
This film falls in the category of ‘Hyperlink cinema’, a style of filmmaking which is characterised by complex or multi-linear narrative structures with numerous characters that are all connected by a single, overarching theme. The trend of hyperlink cinema is about more than just the film. It’s about an experience that involves the audience, exploring the idea of interactivity that has been present in art for years. The presence of multiple stories and plots evokes a feel of multi-tasking for the audience and if done successfully, delivers the movie’s message or theme very effectively. What I find interesting about hyperlink films is that the usage of multiple character plotlines for the film’s grand exposition is akin to the critical thinking process of finding analogues or parallels between multiple concepts or abstracts. This could be a reason why this narrative structure is quite popular, it enables the audience to step inside the world of cinema and become a part of it.
The narrative structure of ‘The Windshield Wiper’ is also very similar to that of an anthology film, which is also a growing trend in the animation industry. We can see that the animation industry is pushing its boundaries and trying to experiment with different styles of filmmaking in adult animations. Although it has been done in the past, the need for adult animated films and complex themes was not as much as it is today. Due to the growth of streaming platforms, the audience for animated content and specifically adult animated content in general has increased as the content is available relatively easily.
How I can relate it to my Practice
I think this is a creative side that is worth exploring. I will look forward to create storylines that are different than the mainsteam narrative structure. Previously all the animations that I have made follow a single story structure but in future I would like to create a film with multiple stories going on and how I can execute them through the medium of animation.
