KieueCaprie's List of Games Finished in 2023: Entry 10-Spoilers

#28 - Spoiler Zone: Pikmin 4

To say that I finished the game is a bit of an understatement, I went and COMPLETED the game. I got all the platinums, all the treasures, I completed Olimar's story, I FINISHED all the missions that weren't just repeatables, I collected all the gear, taught Oatchi EVERYTHING, even collected all the onions and castaways. I was THOROUGH and I STILL want to play through the game again, from the beginning, because I enjoyed my time with it so much.

My biggest issue was how handholdy it can get sometimes, especially at the beginning, but being left to your own devices afterward, the game felt great. I loved the environments, the controls are somewhat great, the strategies you could employ are numerous and while going down to one captain in Pikmin 4 can suck, it's worth noting that Oatchi is also technically a captain, meaning you can do a good number of things just by abusing the "Go Here" command.

The new characters are also pretty great, although Oatchi is probably the best of them all. Character customization is kinda... meh but you do unlock the ability to have a Leafling skin later on, which I took almost immediately because I found it funny that they still wear the helmet.

Speaking of Leaflings, the dandori challenges are quite challenging to plat the first time around but they were quite satisfying to solve once I got my bearings on each map, clearing things out with my dog while my pikmin carried things back and forth, employing many strategic maneuvers to increase my productivity and expand my Dandori.

The dandori battles against Olimaren't were great too, although it was kinda sucky having only one-half of the screen dedicated to my viewpoint and the other half to his but I suppose it was nice being able to screen cheat and mess up his day by sniping the objects his pikmin were carrying.

And then there's the Shipwreck Tale which was basically a prologue to Pikmin 4 where you play as, well, Olimar as he tries his hardest to gather all the parts of the Dolphin within 15 days. Initially, I was somewhat intimidated by this until I realized that you unlocked gear as you collected parts AND once you find Moss, the run gets so much easier.

And that unlocked... The Trial of the Sage. And it was.

Actually not terribly frustrating at the point in the game where I was at (which was post-Louie with all gear and Oatchi skills unlocked), the dandori challenges in the Trials were hard but a couple of practice tries eventually got me the coveted platinums. HOWEVER, Trial 7 where you have to kill 95 bulborb larva and five leeches before one minute of time runs out is probably THE WORST I've seen.

The auto-lock becomes a complete HINDRANCE in that trial PLUS it felt like RNG was hovering over me the entire time I did it, never have I ever had so little fun playing a challenge in my life but somehow One Fell Jump has joined the ranks of Worst Challenges Ever in my book.

And my reward? White and Purple onions. Great. I got them after I finished everything so I couldn't utilize them, which is very annoying. Same with the lineup trumpet you get for finding all musical instruments. Ugh. Nintendo why are you doing this.

In the end, though, I loved Pikmin 4 and I think it has completely supplanted Pikmin 2 (This does not mean I'm implying I'm a masochist for loving that game) as my favorite Pikman game.

HELLO!!!!!! it’s monster boyfrienf time :) (also i’m so sorry for taking so long to get to this you absolutely are not bothering me it’s just been kind of hard for me lately)

i give you a plant monster boyfriend! hes 5’5 (short king) and hair is like dreadlocks but theyre vines 😔 little flowers grow in them 😔 (call him a pikman PLEASE)

don’t be surprised if suddenly plants starts flourishing near where you are, he told them that you’re kind and now they feel safe enough to grow and flourish when you’re there. (don’t get freaked out if you’re sitting in the grass for a while and then there are little plants and flowers wrapped around your shoes ok they’re not trying to hurt or scare you theyre just excited to see you)

sometimes he forgets that he can’t like...telepathically talk to you like he can with plants so there have been plenty of times where he’ll be staring at a plant and then look at you and say “CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?” because he forgets...you can’t hear the tea this cactus just spilled

overall he’s just a soft loser who looks like a pikman in the spring <3
