Warning! This post contains spoilers up to chapter 170 of Tsubasa (and Chapter 71 of xxxHolic). Please skip this if you have not read that far.
Please also make no comments about what happens after that point in either manga.

Obligatory this sucks so much more knowing that this isn’t just about strength (as the narrative might imply, at this point) but because it’s his last surviving reminder of the parents who were brutally murdered in front of him as a child.
Thanks CLAMP!

Fai’s price also gives him significant pause. It’s VERY nice seeing this moment and actually knowing exactly what the tattoo, where it came from, and what it does.
Fai knows the tattoo will stop his power from growing. Without his tattoo Fai then deliberately tries not to use his power at all throughout the journey because he’s operating on the understanding that the more he uses it the stronger he’ll get. So he just… doesn’t use it.
I think it’s Kurogane who eventually points out that, if the curse was going to trigger when Fai met someone with stronger magic than him, then wouldn’t he want to keep using it to making it as strong as possible, to decrease the chances of it ever happening?
And the answer is a pretty strong YES, but that’s exactly what Ashura is trying to avoid, and with the help of some handy dandy brainwashing he can manipulate Fai right where he wants him! So that Fai is still at a level where Ashura can eventually out strip him.
By murdering all the people Fai knows in his new home.
And forcing him to kill his father figure.
Out of LOVE.
I hate Ashura.

And the other kids in Kōshujin High Class 1-B! They have fun designs and great personalities but they’re more background, honestly, so they don’t have very much in the way of backstories (yet).
Seimei Sōzō (想像 青明) / Imagination Hero: Bluelight
Age:15
Quirk: Imagine -- Can create solid, semi transparent objects made of blue light based on anything she has seen before. She can only project one object at a time, though she can switch quickly. The objects cannot be bigger than a truck, but she has full control of them.
Seimei is an artiste. She’s constantly coming to school covered in paint stains and sometimes has a paintbrush or pencil behind her ear or used to hold her hair up. She’ll get inspired at random moments and force whoever inspired her to sit their ass down and let her draw them, or sit her ass down and draw whatever it is despite other obligations. She’s a bit ditzy and flaky, but she can get serious in a pinch, and is incredibly creative with her Quirk.
Name Trivia: Her first name contains the kanji for ‘blue’ (青), and can be also read as Akira, which means ‘bright’. Her surname is the word for ‘imagination’.
Kokuyu Kurogane (黒金 黒油) / Dark Hero: Blackgold
Age:15
Quirk: Black Ooze -- His body can secrete a black ooze from his palms. He can adjust its stickiness and viscosity. He can manipulate the ooze however he wants and harden it to make weapons or armor. He can track anyone he leaves a handprint on. He can't secrete too much at once or he gets dehydrated, so his costume has storage units for the ooze so he can collect it and use it without side effects.
Kokuyu is an edgy fuck, basically. He’s the resident goth punk who thinks he’s dark and mysterious and all that. He lays it on thick, being melodramatic and spooky and unironically talks about dark magic and curses and evil spirits. He’s an endless source of entertainment, really. He loves horror stories and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the weirdest, creepiest shit. He wants to be a hero anyway, though, a Dark and Mysterious type.
Name Trivia: Both his names contain the kanji for ‘black’ (黒), and while his first name also has the kanji for ‘oil’ (油), his surname means ‘black gold’ -- another term for oil and the source of his hero name.
Kanagu Nishiri (螺人 金具) / Impact Hero: Megadrill
Age: 16
Quirk: Drill Arms -- He can turn his arms into drills from the elbow down. He can use them as swords or spin them for drilling action, and can use that momentum for jumps or tackles. However, he gets dizzy if he rotates them for too long.
Kanagu is basically the typical hot-blooded Manly Man type, loud and brash and very cheerful, and has a habit of challenging people to fights -- one of the others has to drag him away before he gets in trouble, usually. He, for some reason, thinks Endeavour is the most badass hero ever, and wants to be strong and manly and cool like him one day, much to everyone else’s bewilderment. He can be a little oblivious sometimes, too, and can say insensitive things. He always apologizes, though.
Name Trivia: His first name has the kanji for ‘metal’ (金) and ‘tool’ (具), and his surname means ‘screw’.
Taiyōkō Kōsen (光閃 太陽光) / Daylight Hero: Solari
Age: 16
Quirk: Photokinesis -- Can absorb light and use it. Can use it for energy blast attacks, to make herself glow, for blinding bursts of light, and for flashes that can signal or stun people. She is relatively useless at night or in the dark. Her costume includes solar panel discs that allow her to collect light as effectively as possible, with an added effect of storing it for use in darker times/places.
Taiyōkō is a bit of a princess, having grown up in a rich family. She’s used to a lot of privilege, and at first is stuck up and rude, but eventually it turns out that she was only feeling out of place and awkward due to her parents’ portrayal of her inability to get into UA as the biggest and worst thing to ever happen. After she gets better, she’s friendly and kind, albeit still a little out of touch with reality and with an Ojou-like streak of being completely overdramatic about ‘working-class’ stuff. She has a massive chip on her shoulder about her big weakness, and tends to get comically depressed about it if it’s brought up.
Name Trivia: Her first name means ‘sunlight’, and her surname both has the kanji for ‘light’ (光) in it and roughly means ‘flash of light’.
Shoman Hakushi (白紙 書万) / Reading Hero: Bookmark
Age: 15
Quirk: Paper Control -- Can manipulate paper, creating objects from it and hardening it for shields, etc. He can only use loose sheets of paper, and has a limited range. Carries several pouches containing paper on his costume at all times.
He’s a massive nerd -- not the shy type, but the vaguely condescending (in a sincere, genuine way) type. He knows a lot about a lot, especially heroes and villains and the history of them both, and tends to kind of be a rules lawyer about things. He’s not entirely a stick in the mud, but he’s the last one to agree on doing anything a little nuts or rebellious.
Name Trivia: His first name has the kanji for ‘million’ (万) and ‘book’ (書), and his surname means ‘blank sheet (of paper)’.
