Cubs Struggling to Win Without Charboneau
Tumblr media
Ryan Batcheller ‘19
“These games really teach us how to battle as a team” Owen Przybylo ’19, the goalie for the varsity hockey team said during an interview. Over the weekend the Cubs varsity hockey team went winless having both games undecided after the final whistle blew. The Cubs lost 3-2   in overtime against Brother Rice on Friday and tied Cranbrook 4-4 on Saturday.
Saturday's tie came during the Cubs annual Pack the Park game when students fill the bleachers at Hazel Park Ice Arena. The game was definitely interesting with U of D coming out strong, Mark Lauro ’19 netted one less than 5 minutes into play. But the Cranes of Cranbrook battled back. Then in the second period, Lauro scored his second of the night and Jackson Vyletel ’19 scored a power-play goal sending the Cubs up 3-1 with minutes left in the second. This is when the downfall began.
Brendan Zemke ’20 said in regards to the Cranbrook game, the “downfall was dumb penalties that could have been avoided”. Connor Manning ’19 got a 5 minute major for an illegal hit to the head, then received additional 10-minute game misconduct because his neck guard fell off, allowing the Cranes to score a power-play goal. Then Jacob Gumbel ’20 got a 5-minute major penalty sending him to the box for boarding. Cranbrook would go on to score 2 goals back to back taking a 4-3 lead with 11 to play. But Will Giloy ’19 ripped a shot from the point tying the game at 4, sending it to overtime.
Although the Cubs come out of the weekend winless, there is a lot of good to come out of the games. Mainly Benjamin Charboneau ’19  the Cubs’ leader in points and goals, was out due to injury. Brendan Zemke said “we need to come out with better momentum as we have in the second and third period, and it proves that even without Charboneau we can work together well and achieve what we need to, so when he comes back the team will be even better”. Charboneau is excepted to return in the coming weeks, and the Cubs are definitely missing him.
Saturday's game was especially heartbreaking because the Cubs lost in double overtime last year against Cranbrook in the regional finals. The Cubs were hoping to get one back but unfortunately failed. Keep battling Cubs.
