i took the switcheroo week as an excuse to finally try my hand at some scrybeswap designs! got a bit carried away as you can see, i love doing character design so much

decided to keep their species/major design elements fairly consistent (e.g. grimora's makeup, mag being vague and indistinct, leshy having nonhuman legs, p03 only having one arm) while still switching up their aesthetics as needed; super happy with all of these as a result!

design notes for each scrybe under the cut! def open to any further questions or curiosities, i always think way too hard about characters while designing them lmao

P03:

scrybe of the dead: i went for a possessed tv vibe; he's still mechanical but those bones do have a living soul trapped in them...also shoutout to @squid-hug for suggesting the x-ray machine, i was very tickled by that lmao

scrybe of beasts: overgrown old bot was kind of a given for this one, but i was also thinking that the plants are part of what's keeping him running somehow

scrybe of magicks: the magic eye is the core powering that top monitor, and the two side monitors display what he's seeing with that eye at any given time

grimora:

scrybe of beasts: she's a witch! like a chill terry pratchett kind of witch, she works with a lot of herbs and such; also her makeup is meant to mimic blood drops

scrybe of magicks: magick grimora is more of a warlock type, her magic is a lot more sinister and she almost never opens her eyes (whereas her third eye is basically always open)

scrybe of tech: tech grimora is kind of a wacky machinist-flavored dr. frankenstein; she inscribes by writing on circuitboards!

leshy:

scrybe of the dead: this leshy is a gargoyle/vampire hybrid! i thought a mirror would be fun for him bc you can get two different cultural refs; medusa (bc stone gargoyle), and the idea that vampires don't appear in mirrors!

scrybe of magicks: i decided to make him a bird guy (kinda harpy-esque) bc he's basically a more whimsical baba yaga hermit; the baba yaga thing carries over from slavic folklore obvs. also he has polycoria!

scrybe of tech: tech leshy was super fun, bc he's steampunk! rather than animal legs i gave him digitigrade robot legs, but other than that he's the most like, normal human guy here probably lmao; despite his well-adjusted appearance though i still think he's got a bit of freaky wonk in him

magnificus:

scrybe of the dead: this one was very ring-inspired lol, got those clump of hair you found in the shower drain vibes

scrybe of beasts: bush magnificus real! i think he'd be a bit more quirky trickster fae in this form

scrybe of tech: one of my favorites; tech mag is an emaciated cyborg draped in so many loose cords and wires that you can't tell what he looks like anymore. a lot of those cords are connected to him, and he plugs them in wherever as needed! he also has a drawing stylus, making him just an average art student tbh lmao

I have a lot of scatterbrained design notes for each of them but generally I wanted them to look similar to their original designs but with different themes. I also imagine that they have the same inscribing tools as their original counterparts but just use them differently (i.e. Magnificus paints animals, Leshy takes pictures of people as they're dying/about to die, I'm not sure what the magic equivalent for P03 would be besides maybe a spellbook that copies the essence of things, and Grimora's quill would either "write" code or write directly onto the hardware of robots).

#i initially wanted to finish these for inscryptober but stuff got in the way #misc design notes erm #leshy's death design is inspired by the actual folklore leshy and the leshens from the witcher games #i remember reading somewhere that the folklore leshy incorporates animal bones and tree bark into his own body #so that's where the main inspiration came from #the markings on grimora are meant to be a combination of patterns on porcelain china and the patterns on motherboards #p03's components aren't actually attached to anything and just float around as needed #also its different functions are powered by the mox crystals in its body #magnificus already looks like a big fuzzy animal to me so i just leaned into that #he probably has a bunch of small animals living in his fur without him even realizing #magnificus #leshy #p03 #grimora #g0lly #inscryption #my art #scrybeswap

a half-metal machinist and an overgrown automaton is a fic exploring the rivalry of leshy and p03 if their domains of expertise were swapped (leshy as the scrybe of tech, and p03 as the scrybe of beasts): Leshy, a quirky machinist hailing from a steam-powered airborne temple of technology, is invited into the dilapidated woodland bunker of P03, a rusted wildlife research bot who's tired of being condescended to. The Scrybe of Technology is only expecting a card match, but P03's ambitions run far deeper…

in this universe p03 is an ancient arcane machine, alchemically distilling mox and natural elements to their most basic essence for his Magickal cards; magnificus, on the other hand, is a cybernetic mess of cords and wires. he takes up residence in a distant, rusted radio tower, digitally rendering his deck with a stylus and tablet whenever he isn't begrudgingly tutoring his apprentices

grimora is a fanciful witch of the woods, living in a small cottage and specializing in herbal remedies and communing with beasts. leshy, conversely, resides in a massive ancient castle, a respectable vampiric gargoyle reflecting the subjects of his deck in a sterling silver mirror; despite his more aristocratic status, however, he is still very much a creature of the night

these are a cordial bunch of scrybes; aside from magnificus, they each spend quite a bit of time around each other, and even maintain friendly relationships! however, once the OLD_DATA makes its dark, corrupt presence known, these relationships are bound to be tested...

in this universe p03 researches and maintains the woods from his rundown bunker via the use of specialized drones, while leshy operates a steam-powered airship and, being a machinist, attempts to assert himself in p03's affairs with great frequency, much to p03's chagrin

magnificus takes up strange residence in a dilapidated cathedral overlooking a massive marshy graveyard, and grimora catalogues and oversees all from her distant aristocratic estate; this is a reclusive set of scrybes, and they haven't gotten much more social with each other since the OLD_DATA crossed their paths...

the third of my scrybeswap pieces! i’d say last, but i’m aiming for the canon scrybes to finish this series off hoohoo

these four are probably the most friendly out of all the batches! in this universe magnificus is a lush, ethereal fae spirit rendering the woods in chalk pastel, while leshy stays isolated in the southwestern sounds of the archipelago in a hut on avian legs, capturing all that’s Magickal within the scope of his legendary view-master

p03 is a twisted mix of natural remains and analogue technology but enjoys socializing in his own way, sharing many offbeat silent conversations with leshy in his dead mall temple; and grimora, cordial as always, tinkers with all manner of machines in her distant lab, though behind closed doors the others may call her a bit overly meddlesome, especially where coveted ancient software is concerned…
