Where does the line between culture appreciation and appropriation blend? Blackface is offensive, but is a white kid dressing up as Moana as offensive? I am always delighted when I see a white person dressed in Indian (the country) attires or celebrate Diwali or Holi enthusiastically, as long as it is tastefully done (although I do feel sorry for the women walking around wrapped in 6 yards of heavy Sarees for long durations, lol), but I am sure there are others who scream appropriation at them. I read that many colleges have in place strict rules against cultural appropriation now during halloween. Do sexy nuns and nurses fall in the banned category? Aren’t they more offensive than properly dressing up as a character from the stories of another culture? Should people only stick to their culture everyday? I should be only wearing a saree (or settumundu) but I think even that was borrowed from the Greeks.
